I recently setup a VPN on my desktop that bypassed my OpenDNS account. I didn't release that it did it for my entire network. I did the internal updater block, so luckily I didn't lose root. But now I am getting ads on one of the games I downloaded to the Fire TV. Is there anyway to block these and delete the package that it downloaded?
I use AdAway on my phone so I installed on FTV and it works for blocking ads well. I dont know which ads it blocks because I have always had it on there. The only one that I know is the showbox app. It had annoying ads across bottom and after video was done. They are completely blocked now. Hopefully someone will answer the question about how to remove the package it installed.

Adblock plus for Android. This is the latest version, 1.2.1 and I find it's not blocking adds on my AFTV, so I went back to an older version.
UPDATE:
I find the above link app doesn't block anything for me, so I went back to the one I was using before:
https://mega.co.nz/#!9w1GiSaT!ntXn4kiQWiEoTiFaeBDE9cRFHoWa5-U0qxGk13KOg3Q
This is version 1.0.1 that I got off of the piratebay. It has the Fanboy List, which is what I've been using to block stuff.
Also going to point out there is the Lucky Patcher, which can try to remove ads from individual apps, amongst other things. Google for it. Grab any version from a source you trust, and it will auto update to the latest version if you give it a min after opening it. Needs root of course.

Yup. Install adblock. But then the whole thing hangs when it tries to play the ads. They are sneaky.

Can someone tell me why I still have ads on my apps?
I am rooted with one-click, installed Calkulin's rom 2.9.2 and went ahead and installed Adfree to see if it would help. Still have ads.
Never had a problem with the rooting or flashing the rom. I have also tried several modems trying to find the best for my phone. I currently have FC18 installed and it seems to be the best so far, Sat. lock is almost instant.
Thanks in advance,
Rick
OP where are you seeing the ads?
Did you run adfree and rebooted your phone ?
I'm on blazer and see ads in tweetcaster. That's the only one as far as I can tell
go to the settings in Addfree.

Add free works best while app with adds is running, hit home button, open add free, run add free, you should get a conf. No add present, do this while on wi-fi .
Works for me every time.

Tried adfree, adaway and rom toolbox.
Still get ads on some apps.
Oh well, they are free apps so can't really complain.
Edit: I found another post on another forum and it stated if the host file shows a bunch of IP addresses as "127.0.0.1", then it didn't work. Anybody know how to fix this?

Odd...that is precisely the core of the ad-block... basically any address that points to that, say ad.doubleclick.net gets redirected internally to the loop address, i.e. it wont be able to load the ad since its being blocked. It could be that the application is getting the ad from somewhere else. Try droid wall.
Seems Google says no to ad blockers: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...purging-ad-blocking-apps-from-the-play-store/
Here is the link to F-Droid as the dev of AdAway suggests to use in case anyone wants it: "AdAway was removed from Google Play. I received an email from Google Play that AdAway was removed due to "Violation of section 4.4 of the Developer Distribution Agreement." Thus, it will never be available on Google Play again. Please switch to the open alternative: F-Droid, and install AdAway with F-Droid" http://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=adaway&fdid=org.adaway

I know. I was just posting to give a heads up. I flash a bunch of ROMs, and sometimes do clean installs (mostly dirty nighties), and go to the Play Store to my "ALL" tab to easily download my apps, and AdAway is one of the first ones I grab. Now it won't be found, so now we know why.

Thanks for the info, I hadn't realized that yet. On a related subject, do you know why one of the build in sources for AdAway stopped connecting today? is that possibly something google did as well. I suddenly started noticing full screen ads in some of my apps so I checked AdAway and it says that the ismeh one is not available anymore. It might just be coincidence but that just started today so I thought it was worth mentioning.
I have noticed this as well. I am getting ads as of yesterday. Only 3/4 sources works.

Which source are you using? I'm on 3/4 now, and everything is working correctly. I checked for updates, but it says newest hosts files enabled. Although it did happen once before. The way I fixed it was to FC app, clear cache and data, reboot, and re-download the blocking files (and of course reboot once new files are done downloading, and have been applied).
Like my original post said I was using the built in (default ) sources.
I found the solution through the AdAway issue tracker. https://code.google.com/p/ad-away/issues/detail?id=413&sort=-id
That issue has a comment which points to: http://adaway.sufficientlysecure.org/hosts.txt
which is a copy of the original ismeh host list, once you add that as a source it starts blocking again.

Yeah they put the host list that had been down back up, in the file itself the header even says "14-03-2013 Back from the dead"
Yeah I second TB. First thing I thought when I read this in the morning. Screw Google doing that. I tether and it keeps chrome on my desktop from showing ads. One of the best options about android being taken away. That sucks. I hope the developers for the apps keeps updating sources. Adaway has been great so far.

Adblocker vs. Adaway...... which is better?
gave it a try, make sure you read the instructions on what to do, b/c u have to ad a proxy also localhost:2020 is the default.
So it worked, but on some pages, it would give me a couldn't make a secure connection... I'm guessing whenever an ad gets blocked.
the youtube app couldn't make a connection either.
uninstalled it for now, gonna wait until they have it more down pat to reinstall

It's what I've been using for awhile now, seems to do the trick for the most part....
Pardon me for the stupid question but I can't understand what exactly this app does. I mean the browsers block all ads as it is...does it really help with apps as well? I probably never noticed..
I've always used adfree, are these any different?
I prefer Adaway because it's easy to whitelist sites I do want to visit
For those on the unrooted retail edition, do you use an ad blocker? If so which one?
tried adblock plus app, but it only works over wifi and prevented me from sending any mms messages. i'm mostly at the grin and bear it stage, but i sometimes will use firefox with the adblock plus extension installed within the app. it works pretty well but obviously only works in the browser and makes pages load a little slowly. desperately waiting for that root method to be found!

No way to make adblock plus work over cellular networks? I do want root to eliminate all those ads.
I didn't mess around with it much after i couldn't send mms messages with it installed. their website says it will only work over wifi so i'd take their word for it. it may be possible with enough tinkering but the mms thing was a deal breaker to me. maybe there was more i could've done to get around all the issues but i'm too impatient
Need ROOT!
Used adaway for years, and currently without root and no ad blocking, some ads would be bearable,
But Jesus Christ! the amount of mobile ads now is completely out of control and obnoxious.

adblock plus. the apps official help guide mentions you can block ads on non root over WiFi, but you can also block it over cellular as well.
https://adblockplus.org/en/android-install
alternatively you can use Firefox and install an ad block extension.
if you want ads blocked in non web browsing apps, you'll have to rip out the Google ad sense out of each app individually.
for YouTube there's a hacked version of the YouTube app that plays with screen off, has ads removed, supports full hd, and has downloading built in. it's SOMEWHERE here in xda, but for the life of me I can't find the one that sideloads.
you can change the easier one to find's signature tho so it'll sideload tho
I've made a post in general for non root. A app called AdGuard will block ads on Wi-Fi & Cellular by using a VPN
- followup. I see this was already mentioned in a earlier post!
Which works best with fewer hassles adblock plus or adguard?
Anyone get YouTube Module iYTBP for Magisk to work? I've never used this particular method before. I manually downloaded the latest ARM64 variant and tried the ones listed in Magisk downloads as well . I'm not sure if its just broken for our device at the moment or I'm doing something wrong. If some has another method for removing YouTube ads you be appreciated. Thanks
Try Youtube RED hahaha
Couple ways. YouTube Red of course which is what I use now. But I used to use pi-hole on my home network
Yea, their ads are getting out of hand.
Root it, then use an aggressive HOSTS file. This one is not bad http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm
Remember to convert the format of the hosts to Unix. In Notepadd++ that is EDIT --> EOL Conversion --> UNIX
If rooting is too much, go with a DNS blackhole. Raspberry Pi Hole is the easiest.
Or you can setup DNS on a Windows Server, then import the domains from the hosts file using this: https://cyber-defense.sans.org/blog/2010/08/31/windows-dns-server-blackhole-blacklist
Another benefit of a DNS server is that you can log all the DNS lookup requests from your Pixel 2, iPad, Smart TV, etc. Then block the **** out of them.

I was having issues too. What worked for me was uninstalling updates for YouTube, and when it prompted to return the app to the stock one that came with the phone, I said yes and it finally worked.
The best adfree solution to YouTube IMO is this:
https://www.official-plus.com/ogyoutube
Not only do you get YouTube adfree - you can do picture in picture without YouTube red AND you get an extra button to download the video in mp4 or just the audio in mp3 if you wanted to! AND ROOT NOT NEEDED! 1st install MicroG APK, then install OGyoutube APK, give permissions, and done lol.
Best YouTube experience yet. Please give this a try, you will forget all about the YouTube adaway module.
BTW, I'm on Oreo 8.1 developer preview 1, unrooted, locked bootloader, stock recovery and still works great. Has extra settings and options not originally in stock YouTube too. And they're all handy =-)
P.S. I been using this for YouTube all week (just got my pixel 2 xl) and haven't seen a single ad yet.
Honestly, pay for it or deal with it. A lot of these creators spend hours and hours creating content for you to enjoy. Those ads pay for that time. And not nearly enough I might add. It's 5 to 20 seconds of your life or 10 bucks a month.
Guys, I live in Russia, so there's no way to legally use YouTube Red. Here's what I did:
1. Rooted with Magisk.
2. Removed system app YouTube.apk.
3. Downloaded modified YouTube iYTBP and put it into the system folder.
Magic! Everything works fine including picture-in-picture mode. No ads!

Would you mind sending a link to the correct APK version to me for the Pixel 2 XL? I'm rooted with Magisk if that matters. I looked on their download site and there are like upwards of 8 files for just about every version of the APK.
