[Q] Purple smudging on screen - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Hey guys, I'm thinking this is simply a common drawback from having an amoled screen, but I just wanted to be sure. While using auto brightness in a dark room (e.g., during bedtime) the brightness level on my device is properly turned down, but I've noticed that when looking at applications that use a black background there will be a lagging "purple smudge" when scrolling or sliding through an application. I first noticed this while using the Yahoo Fantasy Football app in bed. Again, I read that this may be a common problem with phones that have amoled screens but I just wanted to make sure I'm not the only one with some sort of defect. Are you guys experiencing this?

I have used several amoled screen phones and have never had an issue like that. I now have a note 4 as well and I'm not experiencing anything like that. I tried to recreate your condition as best I could and I'm not seeing it..... good luck with that one!

yeah, it always happens on amoled. s4, s5, and the galaxy tab s has it. it's just how it's always been
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk

Nothing to be worried about. All I have had have done this and the note 4 is no different. Just remember, it's the BEST display available on a phone right now... or so I have read

mine is so terrible, its making me crazy! specially when watching a movie, its all purple, it started the day after i bought it and now got terrible ! my movies get all purple :|(not that much but really annoying)

I'm having the same problem on my note 4 (SM-N910C) after the lollipop update... It's making me very angry! At least on my device the effects seem to be rather substantial... I'm sure this wasn't happening on kitkat...
Anyone else having this problem?

So I tried to reproduce this and under no circumstances does my phone exhibit this under auto brightness.
Though no matter how dark it is my phone will only drop brightness to about ~15-20%.
Even if I drop the brightness down to 2-5% manually it does not exhibit the purple lag.
For my device... only at the absolute minimum brightness does it exhibit this behavior.
If your device is exhibiting this kind of behavior what brightness level is it actually at?

[Q] Just got my nexus, the screen dimming is annoying. help please.

I just got my Galaxy nexus (an hour ago), and I'm getting around using it pretty well except for one thing which is annoying me big time.
The screen seems to dim or change its color balance when viewing certain things. Whites are usually dimmed at most times, but when I view other things, the dimness goes away and whites become very radiant.
It seems like the phone is adjusting automatically to things on the screen for the sake of energy saving. How do i disable this!?
Yes, I have my Brightness on manual and set to full. That is not the issue.
okay wow this is getting annoying... Two more issues:
1-The thing won't transfer files while im using windows 7 "the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected". When using OSX Lion, it isn't even detected.
2-There is chinese text here and there no matter what I do for language settings.
This is my first android phone ever, and I'm not liking the experience so far...
Look, I've tried searching for these two issues, and I did not find any threads with them resolved. Maybe I'm computer illiterate. Maybe I have a very low IQ, but can you just help me resolve these issues IF you know how to resolve them without just going into my thread and be like "Oh look, another noob", and proceed with leaving?
PS: I AM A NOOB.
Protip 1. Read up on amoled technology a little. And then read some of the issues some phones like galaxy s2 had. Your dimming is normal. It sounds like you're just more sensitive to it.
Protip 2. Download the appropriate drivers. In device manager, you want it to say android adb interface when you're phone is plugged in.
Protip 3. Take a chill pill. It is okay to be a noob. It happens. Your attitude comes off as annoying or you're freaking out over nothing. Solving problems take time and we are not sorry xda can solve them instantly for you. Patience, amigo.

You might try turning of Auto Brightness and set it somewhere you feel comfortable... I just decided when I got this phone that I'd make myself get used to the adjustments and it's worked out well.
IMHO the adjustments going from white to black are less noticeable on 4.0.3
As far as the dimming, you have Auto Brightness on. Go to settings, screen and set the brightness to something else.

samsung drivers
for the drivers use this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20311264
PDAnet installs the drivers for you nice and easy, then you can remove from your phone and pc and the drivers will stay behind.
at this time there is no way to disable the screen dimming function. samsung's other phones have this feature as well, with an option to disable it in settings. its a power saving feature. for whatever reason google did not give any option to turn this on or off. so for now we have to wait if maybe a ROM can disable it.
For OSX you need to download Android file transfer for it to be seen.

Thank you everyone ...Sorry for the attitude earlier.
It seems like I got one of the GNexus phones which have a really good screen (The colors are just mind blowing), its only the dimming thing which is getting in the way. Also, I've tried to update to 4.0.3 and checked out the developer's section of the GNexus forum, but the steps are kind of overwhelming and I'm having my final exams at university right now, so I'll have to wait for a week to just sit back and read everything slowly and correctly.
One more thing, is there a download link to the official 4.0.3 mod ? It seems like everyone here prefers modded images one way or another.
lol. the dimming you are referring to is probably from current draw or a trait inherent to amoled. some people have mentioned they notice "dimming" like on white background browser and you pop up your keyboard. the white will get dimmer or yellower, or black more grayish. this is what you're talking about?

Its the opposite. When you draw the keyboard out, the whites get brighter and stronger. I don't have yellowing on my phone (thank god), but I do have dimming.
top make it simple:
The more the blacks = The brighter/stronger the whites.
Clearly a voltage issue for power consumption's sake. As the phone physically switches of diodes to achieve true blacks, more energy flows to lit diodes and they in turn become brighter.
Isn't there some sort of tweak deep enough to give full power to all diodes at all times regardless of what's on the screen (Full power even if the entire screen is white) ?
Firstly, welcome to Android. Once you get used to it you'll love it. I gave the same problem Windows 7 sometimes usually large video files and need to say that the adb drivers are not required to transfer files to the phone - I don't have them installed and I can still transfer data.
I have to say this is my first amoled device and I haven't noticed any dimming unless I have auto brightness on of course which I understand you don't.

ah yes. you're correct. i had it backwards.
I have the same issue with transferring large amounts of data using Windows 7. Looking for a fix too.
Investing the time to learn how to setup the SDK and using ADB will be well worth it.

Out of the three results I found searching for this topic, I'm glad I checked this thread.
The exact thing I was wondering was:
Is there any way to disable the screen from getting brighter when my keyboard comes up on the screen?
From reading your response, it seems that the screen getting brighter is a result of the design of the screen, suggesting that there is no way to stop it from happening. The only thing I've been able to do to make the screen remain at the brightness I set it is to change the theme of my keyboard to a brighter or lighter color based theme.
I'm using Swiftkey with the Neon keyboard, it looks great and I love it!
I had a Samsung Vibrant previously to the Galaxy Nexus, and there indeed was a "Power Saving Option" in the settings and if I remember correctly that stopped the screen from getting brighter with the keyboard on screen. Has any fix / ability to change this on a stock Galaxy Nexus running JB been found? It's just barely annoying enough for me to notice it, plus I'm a stickler for more battery life and I can feel my battery dying the brighter the screen gets. ( I know this last part may be a mental thing, but still. Haha. )

Flickering screen

I have noticed that my screen is flickering ever so slightly in all applications. it is bearable but slightly annoying. Could this be hardware related and will I have grounds for a warrenty replacement? should I wait and see if any OTAs resolve it?
Everything is stock. Brightness is set to auto.
I have problems with shadowgun crashing when there is an explosion etc. possibly related?

Yeah, i noticed this too on my One X I've mostly seen it while my mobile data connection was on, and it seems to decrease a lot but not completely disappear when it's off. I also got a weird message yesterday while charging, saying something along the lines of "your phone is using too much current, -" (the message was in dutch, not sure what the exact message is in english) my phone turned off before I could completely read it. I wonder if those issues are somehow related. Maybe the screens backlight isn't getting enough power when the radio is on. Anyways, I'm not an expert, so don't quote me on that.
I also heard the tegra 3 drivers are buggy, so shadowgun crashing and performance drops etc. will hopefully be resolved in future updates.
I've got it as well I think it's a driver issue the last thing I want to do is go for a replacement and that to have more dud stuff as this is the only dud thing on mine. Everything else is fine apart from flickers now and then.

@backstabz0r for screen flickering pls refer to my earlier ans and for your problem which you got warning message thats common warning you get when you have put phone in charge and if you using it for gaming which consumpts more nergy then, message will be" battery consumption is more then the supply"
so suggest ou to let battery get charged till 30 % and then use it for gaming or any other apps
I've read a few threads here regarding the flicker and it seems some people are confusing flicker with something that I really don't know what to call.
Flicker for me is when there's a stroboscope-ish effect, like when you place your sight just above an old CRT monitor, or when a fluorescent light is on it's last breath. Not when what you see on the screen makes random movements a few pixels in any direction.
I have flicker on my HOX. But it's only noticeable on lower brightness levels. This happens in all applications and in settings menu, everything with white or light grey background, so not related to badly written apps. But I wonder if this really CAN be software related? Has this happened with other models from various manufacturers?

I've got what your describing quite a few users have. I believe it could be down to the drivers for the Soc. Might just need a driver update. Only the next update we can tell if this fixes the issue or not. We need to pressure HTC regarding this issue.

But is it really possible that a driver issue can cause flicker? I've never seen it before.
I tweeted @htcdev earlier today about it but no response yet. I wonder what the best way to make htc aware of this is. Contacting their lousy customer support feels pointless, it won't reach the people who actually can make an impact.

Right guys untick animations in Developer options, restart give it a while, go into camera you'll notice glitches, play a YouTube video you'll notice green bar on the left hand side of the screen in full screen mode. Untick animations and this disappears. It's worrying not sure what to do now.
Edit: can't repeat this but will keep trying as something did trigger it off for the screen to go like that.
Yeah, with flicker I didn't mean anything like having low fps when scrolling through stuff. I meant a quite noticable fluctuation in the brightness of the backlight if that makes sense. It is indeed quite like a CRT monitor with a low refresh rate. I haven't seen it yet when my screen brightness was high, but I'm not sure if it doesn't occur on higher brightness settings. It is also not constantly flickering, It only seems to act up when my mobile data connection is active, although I have seen a very slight flickering with data turned off. I really hope this isn't a hardware issue, the rest of my phone is pretty much perfect and I'd rather not send it in for a replacement after all the trouble I had with my sensation :/
I have the flicker issue, the screen flickers near the center a little bit to the right though, and it is reall irratating, but i can only see it when viewing pictures and on greys.
I hope it isn't hardware!!
tried all the ideas given to stop it but none work for me, still seems to flicker
Me too
I have the screen flickering too.
Im reluctant to return it as apart from this the handset is solid.
It on appears on certain colours making me think its software related.
I also have the exact same flicking issue. From what I have heard it is a software issue rather than a hardware issue. Just to be on the safeside though I am returning my One X to Phones4U for a replacement. Will be interesting to see if the replacement has the same issue.
I made a thorough check yesterday. I downloaded a brightness control app where you can write what brightness level you want so i tried from 3% which was the lowest possible step by step up to 15%. At 15 the flicker stops so its not 30 as I said before. this is my only issue too so I dont dare to replace it just to get a worse phone. My sister is getting one next week so gonna compare them.

I noticed this too, but i believe its a software issue only. When I unlock the phone, the screen flickers while sense runs and the three menu button appears then goes. Once its all settled its fine. I believe this is to do with sense rather than a phone issue, and will be addressed via OTA.

[Q] Screen flickering (CRT like)

Hi,
EDIT
Resolved it (kinda), I shut the "Economy mode" and the screen stop the flickering....
---
I'm creating a new thread for this problem got an answer there telling me it's my phone, but I would like to know if somebody else notice this.
It's like on good old CRT. Got a Note I (got stolen) bought a Note 2 and I can see a flickering, like if the display had a 60Hz refresh rate, never notice such a thing with the Note I.
It's more noticeable on white screens. And when you are using peripheral vision, by pointing your eyes like 10 centimeters from the side of the device, the flickering must be more visible
The effect looks like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3jHOwE8MqA not mine but can give an idea of the problem.
Thanks

Ok, so if you do not own this device the Note 2, and do not want the device, why chime in and post/comments...
My scraan is flickering too. Feels like old CRT TV. When brightness not at 100% level I can observe this problem. Looks like samsung using PWM to control brightness. I think this is terrible. And I hope this can be fixed by software (adjust brightness by gamma correction etc)
mine also sometimes flickering on the lock screen in the near clock area for about 0,5-1 sec. but no need to worry, i guess its a hidden samsung note 2 feature...
So there are no solutions to fix screen flickering? Maybe we can overclock screen somehow? Maybe alternative brightness control?
The screen flicker mus be due to a bad batch of screens. Mine had the screen flickering too. and even with economy mode shut down and brightness is set to less then 100%. if you rapidly move the phone you can see that you see several screens instead of a blurry moving screen. this way you know it flickers. so for example if you move your phone up and down very rapidly instead of seeing a blurry view of the screen you will see several edges of the screen simultaniously. this tells you its flickering. While just looking at the screen you wont actually see the flickering but its somehow disturbing.
The way i know that your screen is defect is because due to a rescent replacement of my screen on my note 2 the flickering is totally gone now.
But keep in mind that my battery usages with screen on has increased. so i think samsung changed the power management for these new screens so that they wont flicker anymore. but they consume more power now. first i used the screen 6,5 hours and had a standby of 24 hours. now i have 6 hours screen on time with 24 hours standby. so its a bit of a change though. I just tested it 1 time. so it could also be i used the phone in another way when getting only 6 hours.
But just to let you guys know the flickering can be fixed.

[q] screen burn in issues?

I have had my note 2 for 8 months now. Only recently i have heard about the screen burn in issue that is the low life of the screen especially the blue pixels. since i have to use this phone for another 2.5 years or such, what should i do about this? can i get the screen repalced while my warranty is still there and what do i say?
pls help!
blue shouldn't really be a problem.
they made the blue subpixels bigger to compensate for their shorter lifespan.
you can also increase your screen's lifespan by using primarily black wallpapers, black themed apps, and night mode in browsers and e-book apps.
a convenient bonus is that this way you'll also increase your battery life, because it costs almost no power to display black on an OLED screen.

I started having the burn in effects after 6months of usage. And it doesn't follow a pattern it's just a random mark that shows on grey colours. I doubt your warranty will cover that as its a widespread issue that Samsung seems to shy away from, but you won't lose anything if you try to get a replacement just make sure you can easily replicate this issue when you try to show it to the service center.

[Q] Question about super amoled burn-in

this is driving me crazy :| i keep reading stuff about "amoled burn-in" issue and blab blab how it gets the notification bar all screwed up and other stuff
i got myself a "Galaxy tab s LTE T705" wich has samsungs newest super amoled technology
and now that i read all this stuff it scares me :| is it really true ? or its just some issue with old technology
and has been fixed or improved in new devices , anyone with any updated info can help ? thanks
Well, its still possible to get even on the newer ones. I believe they should be improved now as samsungs tab 7.7 didnt do so well. As long as you dont keep your brightness at 100% and are on facebook or a social media app for more then 4-6 hours straight then you should be fine. Watching videos and other stuff shouldnt give you any screen burns. The notification bar is black in which things that are black stay fully black. So that means that it shouldn't burn in from just black or dark colors and saves battery too.
If you want, you can read more on how super amoled works. Something about dark colors does something bla bla bla. But it shouldnt be a problem if you are a movie watcher or web surfer Hope this helps!
Btw i also made a thread on this issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3009478

There is no such burn in BUT, there is this ghosting in Tab S 8.4 where, when the brightness is low, and u have anythung on screen, ANYTHING, when u scroll, the blacks show ghosting.
I have tried this in every possible scenario and it shows ghosting of the sceeen. There is also this ghosting kinda thing going on when, agaon , when brightness is low, the drop down notifivatipn bar shows bluish tint same as it was in Galaxy S5. I think this secondroblem os software related cause as i remember it was fixed by samsung. But the ghosting part is issue with all the AMOLEDS. Its still not fixed.
Try yours in low brightness and in some dark room or place, u will see it easily, btw i myself have tried this in 3 different models 3 8.4 and 1 model of 10.5 Tab S
