Stump Rooter [noob] - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just recently rooted my device using Stump Root and I want to be able to install roms. I have no idea of how and if I should uninstall the root or even how I would go about getting a fresh install of the factory settings. I have no clue on how to install a rom and if I should but I do want to use different features on my phone and try different things until I have my phone working the way that I like and can enjoy my LG G3. I only installed Stump Root so I can install certain apps on my phone that required root access but I'm not sure if that's all I need to install roms. If anybody have any help as to what I should do, I would be greatly appreciative of any and all help.

First and foremost, this should be moved to the Q&A section, just an fyi and a moderator may move this. Secondly, the answers to all of your questions should also be found in the Q&A section. For instance, you need an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery to install roms(if there are any for your particular g3 - verizon, sprint, international, tmo, etc). Again depending on your model g3, how you get that recovery will be different(tmo comes unlocked, the others must use bump! to get TWRP). Please, kindly check out the Q&A section and do your homework, all your answers can/will be answered there.

If you want to feel a single bit sure about your phone hacking you should start with reading a few threads in Development forum and the others too. Look for Bump and how to restore your phone.
Read, read and read.
And a friendly note to you.. This thread is in the wrong section. Perhaps it should be in Q&A???

Rooting Question

Hi all, I'm new to this phone, and new to Android in general. I've read up on rooting, but I'm still not clear on a couple of things:
1) Does flashing a new kernel like zedomax get rid of all the apps that are on there just to get root? I like quite a few of the apps that came from Sprint/Samsung, like Vlingo and all of the google apps, so I don't want to lose them.
2) In the CWM thread, it mentions that after loading CWM you can get root by loading a file linked in that thread. Does this mean that the phone is essentially the stock phone, with the exception of root and CWM as the recovery program? Is the stock ROM still on there until I choose to install other ROMs?
The only thing I'm really interested in for getting root is to run the Cisco VPN client from the app store. I don't mind tinkering around with new ROMs, but I don't want to lose any functionality or have a flakey phone where sometimes the radios don't work properly.
Thanks for the help.

Flashing a new kernel to get root access won't delete any data. About the only visible change is you will have an app called superuser. All data will remain unchanged. The best way to get root access is through ODIN, there are many tutorials on how to do this if you are unsure.
For your second question, unless you install a new rom, you will be left with the stock rom after gaining root access. You will also have cwm for recovery and superuser to give certain apps root access. Hope this helps, let me know.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. I'll give it a try tonight and let you know how it goes.

Just so I'm clear, getting root access through ODIN, you're referring to downloading one of the zedomax kernels from part 4 here that roots the phone?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17617227&postcount=1
The stock kernel listed there doesn't look like it has root.

I would follow the steps listed here :
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-root-sprint-epic-4g-touch-video-guide/
I did it this way, and it takes less than 10 min. Was running stock rom with no issues for a week but have now since flashed some custom ROMs. Let me know how it works out.

Rooted my phone but no rooted applications work

Hi folks,
I rooted my phone but no applications that require root access work.
I am currently running the 40.2 update on my verizon nexus.
I tried wifi_tether_v3_1-pre111.apk, rom tool box, root checker and root toolbox.
Rooted applications always say that my phone doesn't have root access or a kernel is missing.
When I do a fastboot oem lock, it shows that my phone is unlocked. I am quite confused as to why no programs that require root work for this phone.
Is their any programs out there that can verify that phone is rooted. Is their any technique other then what I tried that can verify it.
I am stuck and I dont know what else to do.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I cannot be the only one.
Simply unlocking the boot loader does not give you root. Check the stickies in the dev forum a guide

I have checked. If you could "simply" provide a link to even one sticky with this information other than the "obvious" answer you provided I'd be quite appreciative.
If you don't know that is fine to. Don't be the guy/gal who gives driving directions but has no idea.
Thanks!

I normally would of, or but I answered your question on mobile as i was leaving the house this morning

You need to install the root binaries to achieve root, look in the general thread and theirs a guide to show you how to root with superboot r3. Once you run it in adb, it will install the binaries and superuser apk. Then after go to the market and search busybox, install the app and let it install the busy box file.
It is impossible that your missing a kernel if your phone can boot. The programs you installed to check "root" are not compatible with the phone. For future reference, check the stickies in the general thread.

[Q] Confused About Everything (Roots, ROMS, etc.)

Got the S3 and rooted it but now I need to know why I rooted it. I know, I'm dumb. But this thread is just packed with too many things to learn anything. It's Jelly Bean frost this, JB fire this. I can't even learn what any of it is. Somebody please tell me what I should do with my rooted phone but first tell me what ROMS and all that other stuff is.
So you can delete bloatware and backup stuff.

Read the stickies in this forum and the rom descriptions.
You root because you want complete control over your technology. You root because of lackluster performance from stock software. You root because a company wants to limit you on the potential and fun you can have.
If you're not a technologist and have no desire to experiment and push the limits of your device then you shouldn't root in the first place.
You root your phone to over clock, under clock, under volt, themes, roms, radios, debloat, etc.

Go into the developer forum. Lots of good info there. I spent several months researching and reading everything to determine the best route for me and what I wanted to accomplish and what was important for me. The definitions you seek are in many posts and several definitions are universal to each phone. Research man, research!

The main and what I consider biggest reason for rooting is being able to back up any and all info and apps. The very first thing I would do after gaining root is make sure you have a custom recovery installed and do a full nandroid backup, either CWM touch or TWRP. Both of those are very easy to install, for the CWM just get Rom Manager from the play store and flash recovery from the app, or for TWRP get GooManager from the store and again flash from the app.
Second would be to install Titanium Backup and back up all your apps.
Once you've done both of those steps you should get Terminal Emulator from the store and read and follow these directions:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32397-tutorial-imei-backup-nv-with-qpst-us-variants/
This will be your 3rd backup and you should now be able to recover from any type of issue unless you completely brick your phone.
AFTER all this you can think about flashing a new rom, as for which one I would read the OP carefully and figure out what you are looking for. Do you want a cutting edge, completely up to date rom with jellybean, a 100% stable, bug free rom, a "pretty" rom, etc.
If you cant find anything in these threads after the help you've gotten here then it's hopeless.

S3 Rooting

Just wondering, if I was to root my samsung galaxy s3, is there anything bad that could happen such as me not being able to update or my phone just stops working... if you guys could tell me that would be nice because I'm still 50/50 about rooting my phone for a 4.1.2 CMod or just waiting for the official update.

There are a number of things that could "go wrong" but as long as you follow the correct guide for your phone you should be okay. Keep in mind myself and many others will take no responsibility if your phone is hard/soft bricked. Without knowing what network you are on, unfortunately I cannot locate a guide for you. Use the search feature and read comments before rooting to make sure no one else is experiencing issues, and if they are make sure their are posts that describe how to fix those problems.
Things that COULD go wrong:
1.) Hard Brick (Your phone will not boot. Only way to get it to boot is possibly a USB jig to get to download mode OR a JTAG unit.)
2.) Soft Brick (This can normally be undone following various guides on the forums (use the search tool)
Updating:
You CAN still update and there are some tools that will allow you to keep root through an upgrade, however they are experimental, and may not work. If you update it is very possible you will lose root privileges and you will have to follow the root procedure again.
Also, if you install a custom recovery (I.e. TWRP or CWM) OTA updates may fail.
I hope this was helpful, feel free to ask if you have any further questions. =)

Well after reading what device you use, did you root your S3 so you could use a "replica" of 4.1.2 jellybean? If so, could you PM me the instructions on how you did it?
I suggest you read all the stickies before even attempting anything.

I 100% agree, read all stickies first! I rooted because I dislike waiting for manufacturers and networks to come out with the latest and greatest.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
Use this link for rooting. After rooting the phone I found the best recovery, in my own opinion as other people may say differently, is TWRP. You can flash TWRP very easily by downloading Goo Manager from the play store. There is a video on the store explaining the process. Very simple.
I then used Cyanogenmod as my ROM of choice, there are many flavors of ROMs you can use. If you use CM, I recommend sticking to version 10 until the kinks are ironed out of 10.1 if you are new to flashing. You can follow there wiki on instructions to install. =)
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!
NOTE: you still have not provided what network you are on. Please follow the directions for your network. Using any other network can produce undesirable results potentially bricking your phone or disabling your data.

Need some help rooting my 5T

Hello everyone
I would like to root my new 5T but I have no idea where to start. Rooting is new to me so I would really appreciate it if someone could explain it to me.
I've noticed that there are alot of different ROMS available, I have no idea what the difference is between all of them and which one would be the best for me.
I'm not looking for the most complex one out there. I'm from the Netherlands so it's a bit hard for me to understand all the topics on this forum and to explain myself correctly.
All help is much appreciated! :good:

Thanks! I'll have a look at that.
I read somewhere that some apps won't work on a rooted device such as Pokemon Go and that you have to install something in order for them to work. Could someone explain this?
Some apps won't work if rooted. Your options are to either not use that app or try hiding root with Magisk (one of phone apps that manages root access). If you use SuperSU for root access or have XPosed installed, then your only option is to not use the Pokemon Go (or whatever app was giving you trouble).
