So I am a complete noob when it comes to rooting Android. I have a Mele M5 tv box running Android 4.2.2 and Allwinner A20. Trying to root it using super one click and a couple others, but my PC will not see the tv box via the USB port. I understand I need an ADB driver, but cannot find one for this device. All I really want to do is to be able to install and run Google Play and install some apps. I'd really appreciate being pointed in the right direction to get this box rooted. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. To update the firmware, do I save it on an SD card, then boot with the SD card installed? Do I need to root the box before I install the new firmware? Thanks again!

Ignore my last post. I downloaded and unzipped the file and found all of the image files, utilities, and instructions for a successful firmware update. Just installed Hulu Plus from Google Play and watching reruns of Family Guy. I had emailed Mele a few times for the firmware update but never received a response. Working perfectly now, so thanks again! I did not run the apk to root the unit since it is doing all that I need so far. Is there any reason I should consider rooting this? Thanks again for your help.

Yeah, I've emailed them and got no reply...but I've contacted every single mele contact on the net and finally I managed to get a reply from one of them.
I bought a chinese version A100 dual core (technically an M3), it's kinda annoying if it doesn't come with play store and there's no where on the net you can get it, managed to root it, install gapps, removing bloatware and some mods to make it vanilla but it just doesn't feel right.
at least, we have it now
For root, I think it's already have the vulnerable recovery, so no need to do anything, just install the root apps and it's good to go if you need to.
PS.
If you have no reason to root then you don't have to. I need root for certain apps that requires it.
One more problem. Video playback is fine using the HDMI outputs. But when using the AV jacks on the back, the video locks up, and there is no sound. Have you seen this problem also? I did run the audio patch but that did not help.

not yet tested as I mainly use HDMI, I think the audio patch is only for HDMI.
mele m5 firmware upgrade question
Hi,
I ve just downloaded the firware mentioned in this topic, burned to the memory card, and started upgrading the firmware of my mele m5.
C, Remove the power adapter from media player
D, Plug the SD card to media player;
E,Use tweezers or other metal tools to press the key”RECOVER” of the box(As shown in picture where marked yellow)
F, And Connect Power again, wait until the light is off
At this point I still pressing the recover button with a tool since 10 minutes or more, but the light still NOT off!
How many minutes I must press this?
Thanx

Mele M5 internals
Hi guys,
I'm thinking to buy Mele M5, but as I hack on the kernel it should be frienly in this respect. Have you looked inside the case? Does it have UART connector? Can you maybe post some high resolution images of the board? Feel free to create a page on linux-sunxi wiki, similar to linux-sunxi . org/Mele_A1000
Thanks,
Arokux

Were you able to get the new firmware to work? I don't want to upgrade if it kills the audio and causes video to lock up when using the AV cables... Thanks!!

I haven't had much time to work on it, but still have problems with video from the AV jacks. Not sure if there is a display setting that has to be changed. It is interesting that if I start a video using the HDMI output to a PC monitor, then switch to the AV jacks, then the video plays correctly. I was thinking of going back to the original firmware, but then I cannot use the Google Play Store.
What version do you have?

I just received my M3 box and it has V1.1.1. It's running on Android 4.2.2 and it does have the Google Play Store. (Oh, I notice it is "Build" 1.1.1 and firmware version v0.82.)
How can you go back to the original firmware?
Just as a tip. I don't know if it would work. Couldn't you use an app like Titanium Backup to make a backup of Google Play Store, go back to the original firmware, and then have Titanium Backup reinstall it?
Oh, and have you tried VGA out? Unfortunately, no matter what "display mode" I select, it only displays in 1280x720. I downloaded an app which displays the screen resolution and even after trying to change the screen resolution, the app always reports 1280x720. Since my monitor is 1280x1024, it makes the image look very distorted... Just wondering if you have any better luck. I guess I could always buy a new 16:9 monitor...

Depending on where you purchased your Mele box, it may have come with the English Language firmware that has Google Play already installed. Mine came with the original Chinese firmware which did not have Play. I installed Play on it, but it never worked.
VGA out? My box only has HDMI and AV outputs. I've used it on my Samsung 24 inch wide monitor (I assume it is 16:9) and it works great. The AV outputs work well also when using it for text based output or still images, but video locks up. Thinking it may be time to trade in that old picture tube TV for a new 40" flat screen with HDMI inputs. That will solve all of my problems.

Ack, sorry, you did say you have an M5 which comes without a VGA out. I have the M3 which I bought specifically for the VGA out, but so far, am OOL with being able to use it... I would assume that the firmware is still being supported since it is a recent update, perhaps you'd be able to get some assistance from Mele's forum? http://forum.mele.cn:81/viewforum.php?f=15

Well, my Mele M3/A100 dual core ended up in some type of boot loop. It never gets off of the green Android splash screen... So with nothing to lose, I loaded new firmware. Since the one on the Mele website is for the A31, I loaded this one... And success! It works again!
However, only works once... When I boot up the machine again, I see the small blue Android for about a second, then the green Android splash screen again and it never gets off of that screen.
I can reload the firmware again and it works again, but uh, I don't want to load new firmware every time I turn the device on... Any ideas what I can do? Maybe something did not get overwritten by the new firmware which is causing the problem?
Update: Duh... Start up mode is for booting from SD card...? Somehow I missed that. I was able to reload new firmware from Mele forum by using Product mode. Now have a working Mele box again. Also, it does come rooted, so by installing SuperSU from Play Store, I was able to get root access (although initially, it didn't recognize root, so not sure what I needed to do, but it's working now).
I have noticed though if I try to use an external SD card (for extra storage), if I leave the external SD card in the device, and then turn on, it doesn't boot up at all. Just a blank screen. Sigh... Seems to make using an SD card less usable when you only can insert it after the device is on...? Or is there something wrong in set up or SD card? (Yes, I reformatted the SD card...)
Hi,
I just opened the Fire TV 2 box. What am I supposed to do if I want root and kodi? Do I connect it to the internet? Do I need to be concerned about it upgrading? Should I upgrade firmware and then root? I know the original firmwares suck so I want to upgrade right?

5.0.4 is the newest rootable firmware, if you not running that yet you should wait for the new update or try & force a update in settings? then if you want to root if thats what you want to do i would advice you to read read & read some more before jumping feet first into something your not experianced with or dont know too much about yet. Their are a few types of root as of now - 1. quick root about 3-5 mins from rooted 5.0.3.1-5.0.4 (by Xenoglyph), 2. the best way in my opinion the 2hr root method (by Zeroepoch), 3, & a video guide based on Zeroepoch's method which is gonna be made (updated from the last firmware) by Ultimate Spy Binns hopefully next week at some point.
I personally will wait for Ultimate Spy Binns video tutorial because i rooted with him on the last firmware & his way was so clear & straight to the point, with no hicups ether
(I found this way the quickest & the best for me but there is many different ways to get kodi & firestarter on your Fire Tv 2 Box)
As for kodi the best way to install i think is download an app to your phone called Apps2Fire from the Play Store on a Android phone find the ip address of your Fire Tv (look in Settings), type the ip address into the app in setup, now download Firestarter from here via your phone - https://github.com/sphinx02/FireStarter/releases
, now on your phone open Apps2Fire & in the top right your see the download sign (the one with the arrow pointing up above the line), find the firestarter download select it & press install, when complete now open firestarter from manage devices secton in settings, and press left & find the section saying check for the latest version of Firestarter, if you need to update then update & then press open once finished, then do the same with Kodi (even though you dont have it installed it will find the latest stable version. So now you will have Kodi & Firestarter & if you want you can root now or wait for the video guide?
Hope this helps if so press that thanks button
I have two FTVs both running old 51.1.1.0. Both of them have Kodi 14.2 and both crash shortly after I launch Kodi. They were both working fine and then both stopped working the same day. I thought there may have been an update, but that didn't happen. I can't figure it out and I'm really frustrated with these boxes. I'm ready to sell them and get something better. I can't even update them. Every way I try to update fails.
Any suggestions?

You have to provide a lot more info regarding your boxes. I am assuming your boxes are rooted or you blocked updates in your router because this is a very old firmware and if so you will not be able to update them over the air without enabling OTA updates.
Start here and read before you do anything (you can still keep root and update to latest OS3 s/w): http://www.aftvnews.com/start/

They both are rooted. I'm just trying to update Kodi. I thought it would be best to keep the old firmware. I've used the Windows utility app to try and install the new version of Kodi as well as the fire installer on an android phone. Nothing seems to work. This is the way I've always done it. Let me know what other information I can provide.
Not sure why you want to keep an older firmware (newer versions bring fixes and improvements) but that is up to you. Have you installed something on both units that lead to the system crash? It is very weird that both units stopped working at the same time. Have you try to clean cache (not data) and run kodi again? If this does not work do a back up, uninstall kodi, reset firetv, reinstall whatever version of kodi you like and run it (do not restore you back up yet) if all is good (opens up) exit kodi and restore your back up. If it still does not open then something got corrupted in your data files and you will have to reinstall everything from scratch.

You can still update to latest firmware (using rbox prerooted images). Follow link I posted above and read, read, read before you do anything.
I think the same as bula1ca write down here.
First update to the last availible prerooted rom. Read it here how to do: http://www.aftvnews.com/start/
Another question from my side is: Why did you use kodi 14.2.
kodi 16 jarvis is availible and you can use it as launcher too with a pythin script here from the board.
Feel free to ask your question but please read enough before

I've seen that some people were able to successfully downgrade AFTV1 after rooting with Dirtycow. I'm able to get root, but downgrade doesn't seem to work and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
I have an amazon fire TV V1 with 51.1.4.0_User_514006420 software version. I downloaded the 51.1.0.2_user_510058520 update, renamed it to update.zip, followed the guide (here: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-manually-upgrade-or-downgrade-the-amazon-fire-tv/) for changing the ROM. When I do adb reboot recovery I get this message:
“System update was not successful. Your amazon fire tv will restart in a few minutes and should resume normal operation.”
When it restarts, it’s still on the same version I had. I’ve tried pushing the stock recovery image like the bottom of the upgrade/downgrade guide suggested, but it doesn’t seem to work. Does someone have any other ideas on how to get this to work?
I checked that the update checks out with the md5 hash. I just can’t get it to work. What should I try to do next? Is there a better guide? I'd like to install a pre-rooted ROM.
On the off chance that Amazon changed the 51.1.0.2 image they are serving, try downloading and using the one from here. Then follow my guide here to install it. You should also check the md5 hash value of the 51.1.0.2 image AFTER it has been transferred to the FTV1 by following this guide.
If you still have problems, copy and paste your entire ADB/shell text here so I can see if you did anything wrong.
@AFTVnews.com thanks for the response! I checked the md5 and it seemed to have matched. I re-ran through the steps an it appears I may have put command in cache instead of cache/recovery. It pushed successfully.
Now... it seems like that version of AFTV is strange. It has a lock screen and my aftv remote won't allow me to unlock it. Here is an image of what I see: Locked Amazon fire TV Screen so I can't open it to run towel root. Any ideas?
Update: I was able to get passed the lock screen by clicking a bunch of buttons on the remote at the same time. I'm rooted again! I'll continue the guide! Thanks for your work on this!
Update2: I'm running the latest version of the rooted software. Thanks for the guides!

Awesome. Glad it worked out.
Last night, I stopped after the custom latest rooted version of the ROM was installed. I keep getting "Amazon is unable to connect to the service" when going to the different menu options. Do I have to disable my firewall rules on my router, or was it just an oddity?

I confirmed that I'm still getting the unable to connect to service last night. Should I just do a factory reset? Would that help? At this moment, the only way for me to launch apps is to go through System -> Manage Applications and it's really annoying. I was able to confirm that Kodi was able to connect to the internet, so I know that it's not the connection.

Since you're rooted and on the latest prerooted ROM, you should remove the domain blocks on your router/firewall. It sounds like that's the issue. Just be sure you have done method 1 at the very least from my update blocking guide. You can also do method 5 to be extra safe.
I tried removing the firewall blocks but I still get "We are currently unable to contact our servers." Should I re-add the firewall blocks and factory reset?
UPDATE: I was able to resolve this by signing in to my amazon account. Apparently for some reason it signed me out. Thanks for all of your help!

Hi everyone,
I received a FireTV box from a friend who didn't want it anymore. The model # on the back says DV83YW. I believe this is FireTV 2nd Gen, correct?
Anyways, the FireTV box was working when I received it, but it would not install the YouTube app from the app store. I attempted to do a Firware update but it would not install that either.
After contacting Amazon support they told me to do a factory reset which completed successfully. However, now, after connecting to the internet and selecting language the firmware automatically goes into firmware update and fails. It looks like it fails to even download the update. Then, Amazon support basically told me that the FireTV box is bricked and they can't help further.
Is there any way to flash the latest firmware via the USB port to get it working again?
Thanks in advance for the help!

You can root your FireTV via this, i think
https://www.aftvnews.com/amazon-fire-tv-2-box-running-latest-software-version-has-been-rooted/
After that flash TWRP, from there flash latest prerooted System Images.
If the prerooted images don't have updates blocked, when a system update is available then it will download it f for you which will be in update.bla.bla.bin format, copy that from your data partition to internal storage
This will be your stock rom, you can use TWRP to wipe the system and flash Stock if you want

Thanks for the reply. I'll give this a shot but not sure if it will work. As it stands now, the Fire TV halts at the firmware update error screen after I select the language and connect to a network. I can't get into home screen or settings to enable the ADB Debugging. Hopefully it's already enabled, or is there another way to get into the settings via the remote?
So just as I thought I can't connect to the FireTv through adb since I can't get to the home screen or the settings. Any other ideas?
Also cannot update fire tv 2 sloane

This will not help you but i am in a very similar predicament.
Got Fire TV 2 from friend on 5.2.6.0 which is OLD firmware, and i cannot get it to update. Many factory resets.
Amazon support is COMEPLETELY useless, but i would suggest contacting Amazon and beg them to return it for another.
On this one, although i AM able to access UI screen and use it, i cannot update it, in turn i cannot install Youtube TV - the one with cable tv channels not regular youtube. The primary purpose for me having this.
For anyone with a similar problem in 2022 , the fire tv 2 box aka sloane
had its last update at 5.2.8 I think . don't hold me to that lol.
Basically you aren't going to find that ROM update around after you unlock and flash the
box, its only shared on Amazon as source code and the available roms you would use
to restore are all pre rooted which usually blocks updates .
WHAT you NEED to do is search xda for unlocking and rooting fire tv 2 Sloane .
The process involves opening your box and shorting certain pins while you execute
Linux command and software .
Amazon purposely wants to phase out the usefulness and functionality of the fire tv Sloane , so this leaves users with a problem .
Closest ROM you can probably get to flash in twrp would be 5.2.7.6
For anyone looking to update the ROM beyond that , you would have to contact the
devs for help on a specific method to allow the updates again .
I'm sure there's a way to do it
I'm not a dev though , I just enjoy guiding people to see they find the help they need.
Peace.
