Does anyone know what component(s) would be responsible for this so I know what to replace? The phone works just fine other than that, I figure some chip(s) got shorted?
Also, is this an issue which could resolve itself with more time to dry? Or once the affected parts are gone, that's it? It's only been 24 hours.

I dropped my phone in water about a month ago. I dried it out in rice overnight and now I am having issues. People say they have trouble hearing me on a phone conversation. My charging port doesnt work half the time. Also my screen sometimes will not respond to my touch and I have to remove battery to get the screen to work.
I'm wondering if these problems could be related to the ROM I'm using or from the water damage. Any help and suggestions can save me some headaches. I feel like my only option is buying a new phone.
if your phone started messing up after you dropped in water it may be a hardware problem or trying flashing it with odin. if it started after you installed the rom then just revert back to your previous rom.

I think this is a good excuse for you to pick up a new galaxy s 3! lol if you have the money for it.
Those issues sound like they are from water damage. i used to have a og evo 4g and i used to play music in the shower, well eventually i noticed that the boot up time for the phone took twice as long. i took it to sprint repair and they opened it and told me it had water damage. Steam had gotten inside and messed it up making it really slow.
Im pretty sure its water damage for your phone. see if you can open it and check the water damage indicator strip?? your phone has one on the battery, most phones also have one inside the phone but im not 100% sure on this one.

What ROM are you using? Some of the issues you are describing applies to older versions of cm9 and AOKP.
The charging port not working... Is that when the phone is on or off? Once again, it could be ROM related.
Hey all,
Had an account here before but forgot my password and no longer have the email . Anyway, my phone got damp while out on a cycle ride last night. At first the screen was working and then it started to appear slightly green and had horizontal lines across it. Now the screen is completely blank. I left it in a bag of rice all night but no luck.
Just taken the back off again and had a look. In the very top left of the phone 2 of the pieces of solder on the back of the screen seem to have just fallen away after being wet. Is there any hope of repairing this, or do I need a new screen piece? If so where would I get one?
Also, it is still under warranty with my contract provider, I don't suppose they would repair it without figuring out it got wet?
Cheers
It's unlikely you'll be able to repair it under warranty as there are indicator stickers that change colour when they get wet, and technicians check them upon admission into warranty. To be honest, if you've left it in rice and it still hasn't fixed itself, you're SOL. It's hard to tell where the damage occurred and it may be the screen or the actual logic board. You COULD give repair a try (DIY or non-warranty repair) though it may be pointless as it might not be your screen that's actually broken and/or other parts may be broken as well.

Does the fact that it still essentially works (sound, touchscreen, vibrate, I can still blindly click on apps etc.) spell hope that it's only the screen that works? Might give it to someone who has some electrical skills to see if they can repair it... If that fails I don't wanna drop £130 on a new screen only to find that something else is broken!
EDIT: Also, when connected via USB the whole filesystem is intact.
Hi Guys,
A month or so ago my mom dropped her S3 into the toilet. I told her to put it in rice ASAP and I believe a day or so later she did (but perhaps later that night). When I turn the phone on, the blue SAMSUNG (or maybe it says Galaxy) logo comes on and shows up completely fine, but nothing else after that works.
The lights around the phone work as well, including when I hit the menu and back buttons on the bottom part of the phone. It vibrates properly when it should and I also get sound, no problem.
I've tried connecting the phone to my computer to salvage pictures and data but it doesn't recognize the device for some reason.
Is the phone completely toast or is there a way for me to fix it? It was in very good condition before this and had only been used for a year.
Thanks a lot for the help. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Update: I just turned it on again and I could see the FAINTEST traces of the home screen. I pulled the settings down and turned the screen brightness up all the way and I can make out everything. The phone seems to be fully functional, but the screen is still incredibly dark. Any ideas on what is broken and what I need to fix?
Once every while it flickers to the full brightness for a split second and then goes back to dull.
Digitizer may have water. See if someone can take it out and wipe it down. Otherwise its a insurance call.
Thanks for the reply. I have no insurance on the phone so that's not an option. Would it be ultra difficult for me to try and take out the digitizer and wipe it down? Is it far too late to try and dry it out more with rice or silicate packs?
Please see this thread. Perhaps you can compare notes.

Is there a way to confirm it's the digitizer before I pay $120 to try and transplant a new one into the old phone? I am also not very savvy at phone repair, although I could probably hire someone locally to do it.
Would like to make sure it's the digitizer first though.
I've also heard that re-dropping it in distilled water and then drying it with silicate gel packs might help clear whatever issues it's experiencing now. That seems crazy to me. Thoughts?
Thanks!
I wouldn't drop it again in water. If you are not sure you can do it, then better send it for Out-Of-Warranty Repair. I can't tell you of a way to determine if its the Digitizer or not.
I "think" its your LCD having some dampness.
Okay, thank you. So assuming it's the LCD being damp, is it far too late to use silicate packs to bring out the moisture? Or is it time to pull it apart and wipe it down?
Also the videos I see online kind of make it seem like you can't remove the screen without breaking it.
Yes give it a try. A friend of mine, tried that successfully. Your mileage may vary.

I followed a video tutorial online and took it apart and brushed it with a toothbrush dipped in 99% isopropyl alcohol. I let it dry for a bit and retried it and the screen was still very dark. :-/ I guess I'll try it again later.
I had a derp moment and forgot I had my phone in my jeans pocket as I was doing laundry, 5 minutes into the cycle I realized my mistake and found the phone completely dead. After ripping it apart and dipping it into some rice for a week. It seems to work most of the time. After finding some rice stuck under my screen near the proximity sensor I tore it apart again, only to have it not boot for a few more days. It seems to boot to android and work fine most of the time. Has anyone else had experience recovering from water damage? Should i buy a new battery and see if that fixes the problem of it occasionally not wanting to charge?(blinking red light)
My SD card became corrupted last night with IO errors. Lucky me I took the pictures I could off of the thing, I put a new SD card in and let it DL my music overnight. I wake up and it was off. I've gotten to the homescreen, but after a few seconds it freezes, That's the farthest i've gotten. Every other time it freezes at the LG logo and refuses to turn on. I find most success when I take out the SD card. That's the only other time I got to the homescreen.
I'm on a VS986 G4. I'm not sure if it's water damage from something as small as rain or whatever.
I had my G4 out in the rain with a protective case before this happened. It wasn't too wet but he most it hit was the screen. Things started acting up when I charged it.
In fact, I checked the water damage x thing. Nothing is bleeding, so it's probably a bootloop.
Seems like your case is not the famous hardware defect bootloop but some other damage. It may be damage due to the moisture of the rain. Basically there is a rule when your device get wet by accident you must let it dry completely before you plug into. If there is still moisture trapped inside and you plug it then you can damage it permanently. You can try let it completely dry out and retry. If the device is still malfunctioning you have to take it for repairs.

I checked the red X thing on the battery for bleeding and nothing. Just red x's with no bleeding. So I highly doubt it's water damage.

There is no way anyone can tell you if this is the hardware defect issue or not in a forum. You described some other issues as well in your post. It may be the hardware defect and it may not. It may be another damage. If you are inside warranty send it for repairs immediately. There is no other way to know what's the culprit.
