I just ordered an Epic 4G Touch from Credo Mobile which should arrive next week. They use the Sprint network and I believe the phone comes from Credo with all of the Sprint apps and bloat. I will want to root soon after I activate it and would like to know the best method to root it and recommended ROM. While i am not a total noob to rooting I would probably need an easy fairly foolproof method (I rooted a Verizon Samsung Fascinate and have installed a lot of different ROMs on it).
One thing people really hate here is when new threads are posted with questions that could easily be answered by doing a simple search. I am not one of those people, just giving you the heads up.
Check the stickies in the dev section, the autoroot is awesome and completely fool proof. I've used it 6 times now.

MetalHead,
thanks for posting the link to the stickies. However, there are many, many pages of stickies and I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say "autoroot". Can you please be more specific as to what root method you used? Are you referring to the (Zedomax) (ACS) thread? I have not read all 40 pages, but it seems that people are having some issues with this method.
Please help shed some light on which method you used.
thanks,
Neil
I got my phone last night and used the method in this thread; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
Seems to work great. Now I have to figure out which ROM I want to use or leave it the way it is.
mobile hotspot
I'm assuming that if you root you can get mobile hotspot to work even though Credo says they don't 'support it'. Correct?

The stickies are just the first group of threads in a section, they are permanently at the top of the list and are designated by a pin to show that they are "pinned" to the top of the page. The auto root is the first thread there. It is perfectly safe, and very easy. All it is is a simple program you run on your windows machine that roots your phone for you. As I stated before I have used it numerous times without any problems at all. Here is the direct link to that thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728

The unlocked mobile hotspot as of now requires a custom deodexed ROM to work but you can use Wireless Tether for Root Users for wifi tethering. The downside to that is you can only create an ad hoc network but the upside is it works with 4G whereas the mobile hotspot does not. Here's the link- http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

custom deodexed rom? What is deodexed?
So you're saying I have two options?
an ad hoc network? What does that mean?
How does this compare to the "portable wifi hotspot" on my LG G2x?
Thanks so much,

Any notable deodexed ROMS?
I was able to install the EK02 modem here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352310 and everything seems to work fine so right now I am downloading this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837 and give it a try. so are you saying that this combination of radio/rom will get wireless hotspot working?
Basically I just want to confirm that this can be done before I make the switch.

It works BUT I haven't tried it extensively and I read in one of the threads that at least one person got a popup from Sprint saying that service was not part of their package.

Hey Itzbob,
I'm about to do the exact same thing - ordered my Galaxy S II epic 4g touch from credo and will get in the next few days, adn thought i'd do some research to see if anyone's done this before - I got the links for the rooting (thanks _MetalHead_), and that seems easy enough. now that it's beedn about a week since you put the new ROM, do you like it? fast? battery life, etc? also, and this is a total Noob question - did you have to do anything with APN settings and the like to get it to work? I come from the iPhone jeailbreaking/unlocking world, and this will be my first root/ and flashing ROM. since I'm gettinga new phone, i'd love to just do this right away, instead of using it, and then wiping off stuff when i flash it.
any advice appreciated!
Sorry for the delayed reply I've been on vacation. As for questions... Battery life is just ok but I am a heavy user. Rooting only without the custom ROM gave me excellent battery life. So far I have also had 2 complete crashes with Calks ROM so make sure you have titanium backup. I wish I knew what caused the crashes, seems like a few apps don't play nice but I haven't been able to pinpoint which ones.
It is fast! Gps, 4G, everything seems to work great.

and my phone works awesomely well. I was having freezes and random reboots and the stock hosts file fixed it.
I still havent tested the hotspot but will be next week when i am working in the field and I will report back.

First of all, thank you so much for your posts, they have been extremely helpful to me so far!
My main question for you is: are there no extra procedures or APN settings or anything at all for a Credo Mobile Galaxy S 2 vs a Sprint S 2?
And in regards to your Credo S 2 --If not, can I just run sfhub's One-Click ODIN with the stock EL13 Modem, Kernel, and ROM for the E4GT (rooted), then do option c3 with Auto Root to get CWM, to allow changing to Calkulin's E4GT v2.5.1a ROM and it's kernel, while keeping the stock EL13 Modem? Can you run the 2.6 ROM as well as the 2.5.1a ROM? Any reason not to run the newer one?
Also can you return you phone to returnable stock from it's current state?
Thanks for any help you can provide! What you guys are doing in this thread is like the only source for Credo S 2 info that I am aware of.
Using the latest rom from Task650 2013.02.23 I'm not able to connect to some secure sites. One example is https://stripe.com/ but there are plenty of others, but no names off the top of my head (just want to point out it's not unique to Stripe, happens with about 1 in 4 sites I've tried to use.) I ran into this quirk with older versions of this rom as well. Happen on a clean install, both stock browser and Chrome.
I'd potentially post in the development thread but where I'm a newbie it won't let me, sorry about that!
Any tips on how I might resolve this would be greatly appreciated. Or if you know where I might look to find a more verbose error log, that would be pretty awesome as well.
Thanks!
Edit: can't explain what happened, but after logging in to a Google Account on the device and installing a handful of apps/updates everything works as expected. Case closed, for now. If I figure out what happened I'll come back to post about it for others who might run into it.

I'm able to get to the above website, as well as all the SSL sites I visit, credit cards, bank, mint, credit scores, ect.. without fail. I'm also on the 2/23 build from task. when flashing sometimes things can happen like this, even on a clean flash.
You may have to Odin back to stock to do a complete fresh reinstall of tasks ROM.
unrelated, I had to do so with a recent LTE issue that is now fixed.

Thanks for the reply RPelham!
I have jumped back to older versions of the rom but it still happens. I wipe caches, format /system and proceed with a clean install each time. The checksum matches on all files used so I'm relatively sure I'm downloading what's expected.
Your comment about LTE perks my curiosity. Although not on LTE myself, now that I'm home I've I connected to wifi and this issue isn't presenting. The only time I run into problems is when trying to connect to secure sites over cellular data.
My data plan isn't limited or being misused so I don't suspect they've throttled the connection. Not lucky enough to be on any unlimited data plan and no high usage coming from me. No high connection counts... really nothing all that notable. E-mails and calendar sync mostly.
Does Bell muck up HTTPS traffic? I would call them up but I feel tier 1 technical support isn't going to be much help until I narrow it down more.

Well he was quick to reply and inform me my carrier is unsupported. Yeesh, like... really quick. You would think he lives here on xda. That aside I decided to try the slim rom and I hit the same issue. So it's not unique to task. However, I'm completely stumped at this point. It would be sweet if the browser would give a better error message! Keeping my eyes peeled for others with the same issue and possible solutions, but thanks again for the advice so far!
Guys,
This might be a longshot, but I'm hoping someone might be able to give some advice.
I have the Epic 4G tough and had it flashed over to straight talk. At first it worked good(since Dec), but the 3G data speeds were never really there. Was getting a max of around 200-250k/sec, but things were pretty solid. Others around here with ST and flashed ST phones have been able to get 1.5+ Mb/sec speeds.
Did have a problem with the signal just disappearing and then coming back a few seconds later, even while in an area where I had 4+ bars. Just Poof, gone and then it would come back.
The phone did an OTA update a month or so ago and things were still working the same. I think a couple of ther updates might have happened in the past week because I heard my phone reboot a couple of times for no reason that I can find.
For about the past week though things have went all to crap on it.When 3G does connect I'm luckt to get 16k/sec. Still works great over wifi.
Here is my baseband version:
S710.10 S.FL24
Android version 4.04.
Does anyone have any advice that might help me out?
Thanks in advance.
I'm assuming that since you flashed over to ST that you are rooted? If so, have you updated your modem, prl, profile? There is also a thread on here where you can change your 3g settings using your MSL code, that may help you. From what I've read, sometimes OTA will jack with the 3g signal. Try those things and see if that held. You may have to flash different modems depending on where you live to find the best one. You're running ICS, I'd start in rwilco12's repository and flash the latest ICS modem, update prl and profile, and see if that helps. Good luck! Hope it works out

Unfortunately I had the phone remotely flashed by flashedphones.net and it isn't rooted.
It does have the newest ST PRL on it.
Could you possibly post a link for the MSL thread?
Looking over the repository and reading the thread about it, I see mention that there are ODIN 1 click modem files and someone mentioned that these will root the phone as well. Does anyone know if this is correct? If so that would be a great added bonus for me.
I think I can still flash a modem to the phone through ODIN even if it is not rooted?
Thanks!
Yes, you should be able to flash a modem without rooting using odin. If you can boot into download mode, Odin should flash just fine. However, in order to change 3g settings, you need to be rooted. You have to use terminal emulator(on the linked guide, there may be other ways) which requires rooting to have full control.

First thing you'll want to look for is making a nandroid backup. The saying goes "if flashing breaks it, a backup should restore it".
You'll specifically want to look for recording your mms/mmsc/apn settings. Basically anything carrier specific settings that you can edit via the ##data# menu. Make sure you write them down and that way you won't have to hunt for them.
You'll need to know what your msl is as well. There are threads to help you get that.
When it comes to flashed over carrier devices, mms usually breaks and has to be edited for settings.
Check out threads that deal with, for example, Boost flashes and check their issues and expect the same to happen and you'll need to fix.

That's the first thing you do after rooting with a custom recovery.
One step at a time. Do your research, read and ask questions and you'll be good to go.
Tip, use Google to search the forum, the forum search can be confusing at best.

Grrr,Pancho you're too da*n fast for me! I actually knew the answer to that one. Throw a brother a bone will ya? Ha. On a serious note, Pancho is right. If you don't know what nandroid is, you're not ready to root. But once you do, you'll have the ability to flash a custom recovery that basically allows you to make a mirror copy of the current ROM you have. That way, if you mess things up, you can always reflash the custom recovery cwm, restore the ROM, and start over. Read, read, read. The folks here have encountered and answered about every type of issue.

Looks like it was a bad flash from the start.

They want me to send it in to them so they can "fix" it.
The hell with that. I'll eat the money and get it fixed locally so that I have someone who actually knows what they are doing.

Luckily this local guy is pretty good. I'm pretty sure he will let me watch so I might learn some things. Not interested in doint other peoples phones, but would like to learn so I can do my own stuff.
As far as flashing ROM's/ modems I'm comfortable with that. Just need more experience with the changing over to other services on them.
But hey, at least I have a pretty decent JB rooted rom on it now.
Has anyone played around with the radios and seen which ones seem to be pretty good in weak signal areas?

The 4.4.3 is out!
And yes! We have it on our GNex second day too! Thanks to developer @baldwinguy77
Link:
Shiny ROM
The official developer changelogs stated 7, 454 changes.
Below are obvious changelogs according to what I found and I'll add in a few of my own thoughts.
(removed unrelated changes such as LTE and Nexus 4/5 specific)
-Tweaked Dialer app with colored Action bar.
-People’s app images are now similar to the one used by Gmail.
-Fix mm-qcamera-daemon.
-Wi-Fi improvements.
-Microphone and earphone related issues.
-Under-the-hood camera, Bluetooth and system related fixes.
ART mode is definitely smoother by default. I am an ART mode user so ART is very important to me as well.
As for kernel, AOSP kernel for 4.4.2 still works on 4.4.3 nicely (to be again confirmed since I'm only on my first few hours)
Animation statusbar flicker when animation is off seems to be still there.
Camera is doing a bit better I think.
Anything else? Discuss here! Off Topic is lightly allowed!
there is one change for omap,it rename one file for camera
I want to test it badly, but last time i installed Shiny ROM here i got no mobile data signal, i tried multiple radios, clean installations and nothing.
I can't post on Shiny topic because of my low post count, so let me do a small "off-topic" here to address @baldwinguy77. Another brazillian reported the same issue, so i'm guessing it is related to our carriers compatibility. Can you give me a hint if this kind of issue could have been addressed by this last build upgrade?

I want to test it badly, but last time i installed Shiny ROM here i got no mobile data signal, i tried multiple radios, clean installations and nothing.
I can't post on Shiny topic because of my low post count, so let me do a small "off-topic" here to address @baldwinguy77. Another brazillian reported the same issue, so i'm guessing it is related to our carriers compatibility. Can you give me a hint if this kind of issue could have been addressed by this last build upgrade?
And thanks a lot for your effort!

This is the solution. To elaborate...Settings -> More... -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names -> Internet -> APN protocol: Switch from IPv4/IPv6 to just IPv4 option.
@Grarak Hmm, i shall try that in the weekend when i can spare some time to play with the phone.
@venni I think you mean to change to IPV4 only!
@dhuberto , can you confirm outright if this works for us?
Shiny 4.4.3
Installed today over the previous Shiny 4.4.2.
Made a dirty installation.
Only wiped cache and dalvik.
Running smoothly as the previous version.
I think this is the ROM for who search stability and last android version like the stock.
I'm very happy of this ROM .
Highly recommended.

Thank you @Grarak et al, the ROM is working great now!
Damn, I'm happy, it's much more superior than 4.3 stock that I was using before. Long live to GNex!

No boot
get a systems manager error on boot and starts a boot loop. thanks!
I loaded this ROM a few days ago and really enjoyed it! Stable, great battery life and the only issues I have/had was the camera (known issue) and Netflix not working even after loading exposed framework. Great job tot he developers and keep up the good work.
NFC
does nfc work on this rom? I don't have a s3 yet but, I am very interested in getting one soon.
Nice rom
pretty sick rom, do you know if build prop tweaks work with it?
Camera Zoom FX works for the android 5+ ROMs, picked it up during googles anniversary sale for $0.10
For me I noticed Camera FX worked only 40% of the time (I have the paid version also) the camera app for me that works 99% of the time is Nexus Camera. And what's great is that even when it fails to open all you need to do is re open it and it connects again. For me Camera FX aside from freezing much more often, once it fails to connect it usually requires a reboot. Just my opinion. But yea I LOVE this ROM. All the basics work perfectly! Oh and battery life is AMAZING!

I got the gapps from the link in the forum (version 5.0).
Twrp seems to be having a lot of status 6,7 errors for me and I can't figure it out. Many times the ROM will install, but not the gapps, frusrtating
You should try using Philz Touch Recovery... Everything Flashed flawless for me using it. Just a thought.

Thank so much!!!!! This worked great
LTE doesnt stay selected
Can't seem to get data 3G/4G to work. When I disable wifi, I lose my Sprint(Freedompop) connection. I cant connect to the internet, etc.
When I go under Mobile network settings, the Preferred network type is set to 3G.
I change it to LTE (recommended), I exit that menu. Then go back, it is still set to 3G. It will not stay on LTE.
And ideas/advice is greatly appreciated.
This is a great ROM and would like to use it as my daily driver.

I had the EXACT same issue. It's a connectivity thing. Sprints LTE sucks. Been like 2 weeks I haven't had LTE. One day I just decided to surf get web and I had no data. I even odined back to stock, called Sprint and everything. Did the ##72786# thing and still no 4G even though it said I had it in that notification bar. So I just went back to 3G bro. Might be your best option cause I'm getting data now.
