[Q] LG services causing battery drain - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Over the past few weeks I've noticed that the battery life on my G3 is steadily getting worse and definitely not befitting of a device with a 3000mAh battery. While I'm not too bothered about the battery drain relating to the screen (I mean it is packing a lot of pixels), I am concerned on how without fail that the second most power hungry process on my G3 is always some LG service or application. Whereas the standby battery drain on my G3 was actually really good (you could easily get 3 or 4 days on standby while on WiFi), now it would just about make a day.
Any ideas on what is happening here...

I've never seen that one pop up on my G3, I don't use Smart Screen either though.
I'm better at diagnosing with Wakelock Detector and Better Battery Stats myself. Wakelock detector may be able to show you what exactly is triggering those.
Other ideas maybe freeze them in TiBu or a Factory Reset...

I've just downloaded Wakelock Detector, had a look and somewhat surprised. Seems like Bejeweled has been keeping my device awake a lot since this morning. I can't see any LG services in that list though which is puzzling.... Is there anything else I should be looking at?

Well it certainly looks like you have some of the biggest offenders on your device... Facebook Google + etc...
Go into settings and enable Advanced mode in Wakelock detector and you'll be able to see even more things. Click on a particular app and it'll expand and tell you what exact Wakelock it is using..

Battery dropped like a rock overnight

Last night I went to sleep with about 50% battery left. This morning I woke up to see my phone dead. Not sure what happened. The graph is like a straight diagonal line down over the last 4 hours even though it shows screen and everything are off.
I recently installed Light Flow Lite to manage the LED notification. Could this cause the problem?

While I would generally say your phone must've been awake with the screen off...your graph shows it deep sleeping like a champ.
While I personally can't comment on light flow...
I remember a few users narrowing their battery problems down to that app.
So...potentially?
Though...I can't see how it would cause problems without keeping the phone awake.
Edit:
Also...wifi should significantly save battery.
Turn that on when it can be used.
It seems you turned it off when you went to sleep...
But the graph, again, isn't showing signal drips either. Which it should if that was a major battery drain culprit.
Odd stuff man.
Probably just a fluke?!

That's about the same conclusion I came to when I see those pictures. Everything looks just fine, but the battery just fell off of a cliff.

IME wifi drains more power when it's on because it tends to wake the phone up a lot more often than when wifi is off.
That's weird though OP - I use Light Flow with no problems, have for months.

I am baffled too. Actually, I didn't turn off the wifi. Wifi on sleep is set to "only when plugged in", but I found this setting never actually worked ever since I manually updated to 4.04. My phone always keeps wifi on regardless... So the fact that wifi is off in this shot is actually unusual for me. (Maybe because I am still using the old radio?)
Signal is really good in my house. Mobile data is off.
The thing about it being the fluke... This is is actually the second time I caught my phone doing this. Yesterday, I was out and saw a sharp drop in battery while it was supposed to be sleeping. I started using the phone, and the graph levelled out again (you can actually see this in the graph i posted). So I feel like an app was keeping it awake, but I can't tell from the stats...

[Q] Sharp and consistently high battery drainage

Hi, a few days after flashing ICS OrDroidX ROM from Android Revolution HD, I noticed that my phone battery starting to have sharp battery drop, for example after 30 minutes of off screen, it will drop from 97% to 92% based on the log from CurrentWidget. The current drain also extremely high, often stay between 300mA to 600 mA, rarely back to normal with 8mA draining in off screen.
I have done the wiping battery stats from the tutorial, and reflash CM10, however it get back to same battery drain though less severe than before, about 200mA drain on average, the sharp battery percentage drop still there.
Please let me know if there's anything else I can do, my phone is rooted, hence I would try to do anything I can before returning to HTC which I almost certain that they will charge me a lot for replacing a battery. Will battery overheating cause the issue as well? Thanks in advance!
I would say download betterbatterystats from the play store. It can give you information on what is active.

Does it ring any bell that something is wrong? I notice that the awake is somewhat a lot, is that due to kernel issue?
Thanks!

According to that graph, your phone hasn't been in deep sleep, ideally you would want to get a similar graph for Screen On and Awake. Go to -> partial wakelocks and give us a screenshot. Also, your signal doesn't seem very good. Do you usually get 1 bar?

Thanks a lot for the analysis! Yesterday I decided to reflash CM10 and remove all files from SD, and put them back after flashing. I get a similar graph as the previous graph that I posted.
After reflash
Partial wakelocks (because I did a reboot in between, so it shows only a short period of time, however during the screen on period of time, my battery have a awful sharp drop from 39 % to 29 %, a 10% drop in just a second...)
Shortly after I reflash the ROM and put my SD contents back into the phone, media scanner was a horrible process which hog on my CPU, after clearing the data from 'media storage', did several reboot then the phone only return to normal.
For the signal issue, my room never get full bar, normally would be stay around 2-3 out of 4 bar. Will this affect the battery life?
Now the problem seems like got two parts,
1. Screen off battery still drain quite a lot, though not as much as screen on
2. Screen on battery drain is awful, sometimes 5-10% in a just a second

[IMPOSSIBLE] Battery drain while the CPU is in Deep Sleep [BetterBatteryStats]

Hi,
i managed to get my standby drain on unrooted stock 4.2 to 0,5% (WIFI) to 0,8% (HSDPA) per hour with disabling some stuff that i dont ever need.
Market notifications
Latitude
Google apps like Currents, Play movies, Play books etc...
This is great, but sometimes after usage it still felt like the battery keeps draining as the phone is in use with the screen turned on.
What now happenend is really weird:
I did set a custom reference in BetterBatterySats and left the phone on the table for 1 hour. No unneccessary apps running in the background. But it drained 7% in this hour. As you can see in the screenshots, the device was in Deep Sleep most of the time and there are no noticeable Partial Wakelocks.

}
But how the heck is it possible that i lost 7% in one hour while deep sleeping? Is there any sort of app that can tell me in this particular case what went wrong?
Any info is highly appreciated.
Best,
ras
k9 mail seems to be one of the culprits
nope. it polls 2 accounts every hour anf therefore uses cpu time of approx. 0,4%. thats even even the case in that "awesome battery life" area seen on the last screengrab. a total of 15 sec. cpu time can't hurt that much.

im pretty sure that this would fix it.
but because this happens from time to time (though this is the first time i can document it because auf BBS) i want to know whats the cause of this. it is pretty annoying to leave a phone on the desk and to find it drained empty a few hours later. this would have happened if didn't pick it up after one hour.
I get a similar problem too. Only way to clear it is a power down and restart.
Well, first of all, can we really be sure that those 7% aren't within the battery measurement margin of error?
Considering of course stuff like temperature, sensor's reading delay and other electrical/chemical/whatever stuff the battery may go through after heavy draining like you show in the graph?
I really don't think that % stats are that accurate, but that might just be me.
Some guy disassembled his Nexus S and measured the energy drain with accurate reading devices. Maybe someone should do the same on the Galaxy Nexus. Because if one software says there's no cause of drainage and another say there was some drain, maybe one should confirm which software should we rely the most.

maybe it happens because the voltage still gets down because of heavy use before. if this is the case the drain should stop at some point and the battery should not die completely.
i will def. keep an eye on this.
Its the fundamental problem with android and our battery technology.
One of two things need to happen, Google needs to get their act together (think project butter but with battery) or the OEM's need to start providing better battery technology. Its ridiculous that over the past 3 years there have been NO significant battery technology improvements. Yes, processors are becoming more efficient and using less power, but that is only going to take us so far. **** needs to happen and Google needs to press it.

Android system % is really high.

The android system % is really high. For reference the screen time is at 2h 58min in that shot.
The post I saw about it mentioned a patch that fixed that in some phones? Just curious if there is something I can do to fix it and improve the battery life further.
This is on jedi xp9 with saber kernel.
What were you doing with the phone in that one hour? If nothing serious you have a battery leak problem. 31% for one hour is just not right. I used to install a calendar widget that causes leak like crazy, even after I un installed it. Had to do a hard reset to fix it.
1hr? The battery was at 1d 11h and some change, but yeah I am prolly going to do a clean install. I'm thinking maybe my titanium backup is goofed up.
Just wasn't sure if there was a system patch that was for that, I thought I had read that somewhere.
Its just the only thing using battery. That's good. Youre getting phenomenal battery life. Trust me. When I posted my last message I didn't see a pic of your time stamp. Do math on total CPU usage of the android system. Also Google backup transport uses a good chunk. Disable that if you don't want it. (When flashing a new rom Google transports your old backup onto your device)
Anyhow here you go. Do the math and see how much battery life to CPU usage I would get verse what you got. If you are never using your phone the is and or system will eventually kill it. Using a larger percentage. It looks like you aren't even using your phone. 36 hours of battery is insane. Also note my screen was on just a little over 3 hours. (At minimal brightness always)

Sorry my bad. But it still doesn't look right to me that your system is burning more battery than the screen.
It seems like your phone was idle for the most part of that battery time. If so, then it's normal to show more android system usage percentage than other things, since there are background processes running. If that's the case, your battery drain is good, especially if you're 4g was on the entire time.

Yeah I never turn the 4g off. Guess I was just miss understanding the post.
Yes the phone was idle a lot, normally is on my days off. During my work week im looking at 18-20 hours getting me to 60-40% and me charging it it before bed. Being in reinforced concrete buildings 2 stories underground causing me to the have a poor signal I figured that was pretty decent.
Anyway thank you guys for the information.

Question Protect battery option

How many use this option? If so, is it worth stretching battery life to decrease the time between charging?
Really its the first time i saw it.
I left it off.
I use all my phones the same and havent seen any battery problems.
So i dont see why this one should be different
I turned it on for a day, but this isn't the biggest battery on the market, so I'm leaving it off.
I use it. Prior to this being baked into One UI, I got into the habit of charging my devices to 80% and it grew on me. It's a tip I got from the Accubatery app. It's a simple way to add less wear to your battery.
Oddly, my phone fresh out the box with only 5 charging cycles from 15/20% to 80% has an 88% battery health score. My Fold2 which I had since launch has a 96% battery health score...
There is no consensus as to whether to use this option?

It's all dependent upon how you use the phone. Turning it on will absolutely be better for your phone, but you will lose that 15% battery life. Your charging habits also matter. If you're a person that just always puts it on a charger when not using it, you would see more improvement from turning it on than someone that only puts it on the charger when it's low. The benefits are minimal. It shouldn't largely matter, but if you keep the same phone for many years it will help improve its life.
It's early days with the device so battery performance is still an unknown for a while longer, but I enabled the battery protect option from the start. As of yesterday I'm able to get 5 hours of SOT with the maximum charge at 85%. That performance holds up over time and I'll end up leaving the option enabled.

I use the protection when I'm home, 5 days a week. I just place the phone on a wireless charger when not in use during the day.
When I'm going out, I'll turn it off to get the full 100%.
Frankly I love the option to do this. I used to use an app that notified me at 90%. Now I don't need to bother. My only gripe is that I can't easily set a toggle for the setting. I'm planning on finding the setting name with adb and using tasker to create a toggle, preferably on a weekday frequency
I turn it on because I usually charge overnight. Leaving phone trickle charging at 85% is less detrimental to battery compared to 100%
i use it, still got 5hrs sot
Got a doubt. Does the Battery Protection Mode works when the phone is charged in switch off state ? By switch off I mean completely switched off not just locking the screen of the phone.
