Hello Folks, thanks in advance for your time and help. I've been using XDA developers for the past week, researching, reading multiple posts regarding rooting my T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II T989 and I've come to a frustrating standstill.
Current Firmware State:
Android 4.1.2
Kernel 3.0.31 - 1003885
Build JZO54K
1. Installed the latest Samsung drivers on pc
2. Installed Odin v1.85 on pc
3. Set phone to USB debugging, plugged into pc
4. Succesfully flashed openrecovery-twrp-2.4.4.0-hercules-1.tar to my phone via Odin (Got green "Passed" box)
5. Unchecked USB debugging on phone
6. Copied three different Superuser .zip files to root of both internal storage and external storage sd card
Here are the zips I used:
superuser.zip
su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip
Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
7. Booted phone into TWRP Recovery mode via 'volume up/down + power button" method while USB unplugged
8. Flashing resulted in error for the .7 and .5 zip files which I flashed as signed and unsigned and superuser.zip failed when flashed as signed
9. Flash resulted in 'Success!' when I used superuser.zip as unsigned
The log appeared as follows:
Installing '/sdcard/superuser.zip'...
Checking for MD5 file...
Skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found.
Installing armeabi binaries...
Updating partition details...
10. Reboot phone only to find NO superuser app installed. Am I supposed to wait for something to come up after "Updating partition details..."?
11. Install Superuser app from Play Store but have no root access.
Question. Am I missing a step in this method?
Thank you for your time.

I had this same problem before. I forgot where I downloaded the superuser .zip file that actually worked for me, but I would recomend using Clockworkmod Recovery for the Hercules to flash superuser.
Let me know if you need any more help
Thank you kindly for such a quick helpful response, I'll give that a shot.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app

Apparently CWM can only be flashed to my phone if it is rooted. During my quest I was informed that odin-flasing a speedmod kernel to my device would be the only way to get clockworkmod recovery on my unrooted phone. My searches are simply not turning up any valid results for a speedmod kernel for my specific phone. I tried one for the SGS II (not t-mobile) and it didn't work.
When you have a chance could you upload that working superuser.zip file you used? Maybe, just maybe it's the zip and I can install it via TWRP.
Thank you for your time and knowledge.
I tried flashing every one of these files provided here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2240607
including the two md5 versions posted a couple comments down.
With no luck.
And it's only for that reason that I'm willing to try a fourth superuser.zip with TWRP.
I know there's a way and I will find it.
Did you try supersu?

You should never ever flash a kernel for a different model phone on a t989.
No Meekrawb I did not will explore that. I guess I'm glad it didn't work then, else I could have an altogether different issue on my hands.
The Odin flashable tar file at this link worked perfect for me.

Updated the damn thing to kitkat and lost write access to my sd card. Learnt that the only way to fix this problem is by rooting it but all existing information for rooting is for other variants or for those that are still running 4.2.2. Tried all the available methods for T211 and T217 and they seem to be incompatible. I am unable to get into the TWRP recovery to install it after pushing it to my device using ODIN. It gets stuck at "booting recovery". Please help.

i've forgotten how i rooted my sm-t215 kitkat. If i'm not wrong, you only need to install/flash only the CWM recovery into your phone, and once you've successfully install/flash CWM recovery, go into recovery and choose reboot now. there will be an option for you to install superuser. choose that and your phone will be auto rooted.
here is the link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2674649
do it at your own risk, i won't be responsible for anything in case something goes wrong as this only based on my memory.
GOOD LUCK
Can you find any solution for that. I also have SM-T215 and can't root it after update 4.4.2

If you have PC follow these:
Try to download "kingo android" in your pc
Make sure you have the right drivers for your phone
then connect your device to pc via USB cable
open kingo android and start
If you dont have a pc and you have recovery mode in your device follow these:
search this: root (your device name) .zip file
and if you are successful put that zip file on root folder(the folder you see when you open your built-in file manager)
switch your phone to recovery mode
volume up, volume down, and menu button are the controls
navigate it to "apply update from sd card"
then choose your the zip file
If you dont have a pc and dont have a recovery mode follow these:
download "framaroot" "rootmaster" all apk
Hope it helps
Hi everybody,
I'm a newbie.
I tried to root my phone but just can not flash superu.
I flash TWRP ( 2.5.0.0) via ODIN sucessfully with a green Pass . Reboot phone to recovery and Hit System and TWRP asked me to swipe if i want to root my phone. I did and my phone reboot after some action performed by TWRP.
I checked with root check basic and it said Root access is not properly installed on this device. I tried to run TWRP manager apk. It said to run the apk phone need rooted. So I know the phone has not been rooted.
I did the following to see if I can correct the problem.
1)Reboot to TWRP recovery and flash CWM_Root_Superuser_3.1.3_Busybox zip file. No success.
2) flash another zip: su-3.0.5-efgh-signed. No sucess.
3) flash another zip: Update superU-1.51 : No success.
4) Flash ClockworkMod Touch Recovery 6.0.2.8 then try to run Install zip on SD card but CWTR return with an error "can not mount sd card "
Please help so I can root my phone. Thanks.

Solution:
I found a SU file that work at this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ginner-trying-to-root-flash-rom-t989-t2832408
Hello, so I spent like 8 hours trying to get root on my SM-A520F galaxy A5 device, but not luck.
What I tried:
- Installing CF-auto-root on top of stock rom, but the result is either failed verification -> forced reset, or boot loop.
- Installed TWRP recovery however, I cannot mount anything and install from it. I don't have Sd card and files in internal storage seem not accessible at all and my copied supersu files is not in the internal directory when looking via TWRP.
What other options do I have to root this device?
EDIT: fixed. Had to do the following:
- Flash TWRP 3.2.1 from Odin
- In TWRP wipe data to remove encryption
- Copy Supersu to phone storage
- Flash supersu
Are you in read only mode (TWRP) and installing from external sdcard?

Hi,
I was trying to repartition my Note 2 with Phill's recovery to gain more space. Achieved successfully but as I tried to flash twrp back via Odin, I probably flashed TWRP to BL section and now there is no recovery or Download Mode opening. Tried to access the device via ADB commands but no device is found.
I am stuck on Samsung Logo. Is there a way to recover from this situation?
note: I have a TWRP backup taken onto the External SD card. A Smart Switch backup on the PC. Did I mess up? Is the phone unrecoveralbly bricked?

Maybe better to flash stock firmware with stock pit to re-partition to the original sizes. But you need to boot into download mode.
Else it is hard-bricked
