Wi-Fi tether that works with Kit Kat NH7. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

It's working for me as I make this thread /post. Posting using my Galaxy Tab 2 running cyanogenmod 10+ while tethering from my s4 running stock /rooted NH7 w/stock NH7 bootloader and kernel.
Found this at HighOnAndroid.com (zedomax) there is a video at site if needed. Just downloaded two files and installed them (following directions on article ) did a reboot, activated TMO hotspot app, started working right away with no prompt from T-Mobile to sign up.
Profit.

Wow thanks. I'll give it a try.

Will sure try this, thank you

This has to be the easiest install, install two apk's and your done.
No script or setting changes and you use the native Tmobile app.

It lets my laptop connect to the phone, but when I try to open a page, I get the T-mobile upsell page saying I have to pay to use T-Mobile hotspot.

Try an https site like https://www.youtube.com
If you have google chrome you can easily download a user agent switcher and set it to android to get non https sites to work

I tried going to the https website and it still does the same thing. When I connect to my phone on my laptop, it says the connection is limited.

I haven't been able to get this to work. I guess some people have different definitions of working wifi tether. Here is my situation. I have unlimited everything plan with the 3gb of tethering on the plan. Many many roms ago ( can't remember i am a flash a holic) I was able to use the wifi tether app with HideNinja VPN and it would mask the traffic and it not count towards my tethering quota. I didn't have use any user agent switching at all. Primarily I would use this tethering setup to update my MMO games since the LTE connection is way faster than my DSL. For this kind of activity user agent switching does not exist since its updating thru a program.
Also I would use XBMC tethered from my mac and it would not count against the tethering quota. There was never a sign in screen for me since tethering on TMobile. The problem I have now is that it no longer hides the tethering traffic. If I attempt to use vpn it does not surf to any site or connect to anything. Its like Tmobile is blocking all VPN. There was one rom that I had where I didn't need VPN but I would rather not go off stock because most roms are just too buggy. I would never forgive myself if I missed a call concerning my child due to the roms not being able to connect to a tower.

I mainly use it with my wifi tabs usually when we are traveling on the road, wifey likes to watch Netflix or Amazon prime while I drive down the highway.

WIFI Tethering on T-mobile

Do you know of any settings to have wifi tethering work without the hotspot plan?
With my old HTC sensation I just had to create a new apn with (epc.tmobile.com) to make it work, but with the GIII this is a no go....
If you are rooted...this works great:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27774452&postcount=9
Foxfi In the Play Store. No root needed just read the description to make sure it supports your device.
Thanks, will try Foxfi and let you know if works.
Thanks

Look over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766155&highlight=hotspot
several us (at least on verizon) seem to be able to do it just with toggles. Those with other carriers let us know if it works for you...
Thanks for the info,
I have tried the widgets option but still no go.
Still getting the T-Mobile Hotspot signup page...
anyone able to get this working?
I've also noticed this to be annoying. My HTC Sensation would tether no problem on the same data package. Now T-Mobile has it locked down somehow. Hmm.

Do this, go to Google Play and download (WiFi Tether For Root Users) open the app go to settings, 1) Change device-Profile to Generic ICS. 2) Change Setup-Method to Netd (master). Now go back and click on the big WiFi icon to start tethering, soon as the system finds the device pull down the notification and authorize it, make sure the Access-Control is enabled., your're all set, good luck.

I guess this will encourage him to ROOT, one of the perks you get being rooted.
T mobile can be a real pain in the ass with blocking tethering. I don't believe the app matters best way I know to get around it is to change the user agent on the computer and do not use internet explorer. I believe chrome and firefox have plugins for that.
I tried FoxFi on a non-rooted stock t999, doesn't work. Sends out the wifi signal, but the computer never actually connects to it. Keeps giving me some kind of error when trying to connect to wifi.
Using the built in tether wifi option, I can connect to the wifi being supplied by the sgs3, but any web activity takes me to the t-mobile hotspot sign up page.
OP use firefox, not chrome to tether. seriously.
and you can try downloading the 'tether' app from the clockworkmod website. google it.
I tether my nexus 7 from my sgs3 with foxfi and its really simple. Just make sure u install pdanet on the device u want to tether. I'm doing a tether with Bluetooth.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
On my S3, I only need to turn on tethering and it works. I small on t-mobile S3 not rooted and I don't have any additional tethering on my plan.

Very interesting, i use wifi tether for root users and after using for awhile i get a push message saying i need to stop tethering or it will be blocked, and then i recieve another saying it has been blocked, its a push message so im wondering if t-mobile has a app hidden inside the touchwiz rom to make sure it cant tether... sigh
Hi!
I just installed Foxfi app. on my phone. I noticed there is also an app. called "Foxfi AddOn" and according to the description it provides some optional features to the Foxfi application.
Has anyone installed this app? The reason I am asking this question is because I noticed that by agreeing to install this app., personal information is accessed ("general info about what you are doing with the phone, potentially including personal or private info").
The above quote I got when I press to "install" the app., so I would appreciate any feedback/advice on installing this app. Thanks!

It just adds a proxy to FoxFi, which still didn't work on my SG3 for wifi (didn't try bluetooth).

I cannot tether AT ALL!!! Te

I tried, Barnicle, FoxFi and the wireless tether app for rooted phones.
NOTHING WORKS.
I did switch to the unlimited plan, as well as my father, and 2 friends, ALL of which have no issues at all.
I thought it was my rom, so I switched roms last night and still no go.
I'm starting to get worried here.
Foxfi- "wifi mode has failed on your phone please use bluetooth mode instead (still doesn't work)"
Barnacle "WIFI: Could not set ad-hoc mode of wlan0:invalid argumnet"
Wireless Tether "Tethering started with errors"
WTF ??? Everything else with the phone works fine
Anyone?
interesting, you even did a full wipe and installed another ROM?
have you tried tethering with native and then use firefox instead or a useragent for chrome?
It's a problem for me too. Right now I use the native app from tmobile and it works fine - confirmed working with jedi mind, infamous and dark side

Read carefully because im only posting this once!
Unlimited plan does not include tethering meaning when t-mobile reads you're using a desktop useragent it reads on the DNS servers and blocks your connection to the site redirecting you to their add hotspot crap.
Easy fix
Download wifitether app the original from back in the day! Requires root!
In settings on the newer betas you have the ability to change the DNS servers
All you have to do is search for whatever DNS servers you want to use and add a primary and secondary. I use verizons
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
You can search for others but they seem to be the fastest for me.
Now share this and repost it if you want.
What this does is it enables wifi tether and overides the default DNS server from t-mobile allowing outside sites to report to our desktops.
Enjoy.

[Q] Cyanogenmod and Tethering

Has anyone been able to get the 'WiFi tether for Root Users' or TrevE Mod working in Cyanogenmod 10.1.2 or any AOSP ROM on the SGH-T999? I ask because I haven't. I reached my 500mb cap for this billing cycle and want to maybe prevent that from happening in the future, or at least get it working.

What you are attempting to do is not possible? They should be able to measure the amount of data that goes through your phone, because it can be done on their end, so there would be nothing for you to exploit. My understanding of the tethering hacks were that they allowed you to tether if you didn't have the tethering provision on your account (whether you did not pay for it, or are unlimited, and they don't give you the option). I've seen the hacks that claim to be able to bypass the data caps, but unsure why it would be implemented in such a way that anyone could exploit it.

Well of course they can watch my data use, but whether or not I'm tethering with that data is another thing. I was able to use about a gig and a half last billing cycle on their unlimited plan, by just using TrevE mod (no vpn app) on Touchwiz based roms and only about 300mb showed in the tmo my account app.
I was under the impression from what I've read that apps like TrevE mod can give you more access untell they put the kibosh on you, and if you go though a VPN you can use it all you want cause all of the network traffic is going though the VPN app not Windows and Chrome etc. which they look for.
I'm mainly wondering if that app 'WiFi Tether For Root Users/TrevE mod' has worked at all in AOSP, even 4.1.x.
I think T-Mobile has improved their detection and now know when you're using those apps or mods. Lately everyone seems to be reporting that they do not work.
As to whether or not you could use em in cm, I doubt it. If you didn't see it say so in the op and it wasn't reported working by others posting in the thread, it's safe to say it doesn't.
Did you search and read through the thread?

I haven't seen tethering or hotspot mentioned at all in any T999 AOSP op i've looked at which is discouraging. For CM10.1 people seem to only talk about the the included tether.
As for 'WiFi Tether for Root Users' its so widely used any thread I look at is device specific most of the time, and/or for that devices stock rom. But there are so many settings in there though I thought maybe someone got it working.
If they did they would have posted it in the mods thread if anywhere. But if it can't be done you could almost certainly find that info in the same thread.

I am running CM10, rooted on a SGH-T999. Following the forums I downloaded Hotspot Shield as the post stated it was the only shield (VPN or otherwise) that would work with TreveE-Mod Wifi-Tether. Sadly, I found that using Hotspot Shield really slowed down my connection to a crawl and also caused problems using tether to stream Netflix, Hulu+. etc. I did find another VPN app that worked (Hideninja VPN) but it also slowed me down tremendously and caused issues with nationwide streaming copyright protections on Netflix, etc. as well. I do pay the $30 for T-Mob's unlimited albeit shackled internet package.
I have a newer Dell laptop running WIN8 and have not tested this on any other version of Windows but:
My SGH-T999, CM10 and TreveE-Mod all work together flawlessly to give me a T-Mob upsell to WiFi hotspot message in my browser whether I change the User Agent or not. :crying::crying::crying:
Then I installed UltraSurf VPN on my laptop and my tethered speeds are AWESOME!! WITHOUT having to change my User Agent settings.
No need for Hotspot Shield or HideNinja.... no VPN setup on my phone, just UltraSurf on my puter and the tortoise has turned into a hare!

T-Mobile 2.5GB limit tether workaround on native t-mobile hotspot (stock ROM)

by using the stock native hotspot feature, i reached the maximum 2.5gb and received text messages from t-mobile saying its blocked and i can use it again next billing cycle.
by breaking it, you simply add APN. same settings and the only difference is change the APN protocol to IPV4/IPV6 then save it.
im a mac user so safari no issues or whatsoever, but on chrome you need to change your UA to safari 5
Goodluck!

Just to clarify, You're only using Safari browser on your Mac? I take it that if you use Firefox it wouldn't work?
For those using a OpenVPN Client app has it already changed to IPV4/IPV6. I'm curious if you would have to create a new APN anyway or just use the APN that you're already on that is already switched to IPV4/IPV6?
I'll test it out as soon as I run over, which is soon and will report back.

im using safari and chrome. i tried downloading safari and i got flagged by t-mobile. im happy with Safari and Chrome so im all good.
and by the way, we have 2 ipad's and tablet and no issues connecting with my note 3 with this setup i posted.
you have to create a new APN since the stock APN is not editable, blurred everything..
Thanks a lot for the info!
Quick question (keeping in mind I have not done (wifi) tether via a hotspot:
I understand the useragent switcher is needed to surf the web via Chrome (for non-Mac users who can't use Safari) when using this thread's technique.
However if, e.g., I want to use this free hotspot tethering option (beyond the 2.5 GB of hotspot included for free by T-Mobile) to simply watch Netflix (via the app and not via the browser) on a tablet or laptop using the Note 3's data connection (as opposed to being interested in browsing the web), then am I right to assume I don't need to worry about first firing up my web browser on the tablet (e.g. Chrome and UA switcher method) to establish the data connection like some VPN's force you to do?
So far I have actually not even used ANY of the 2.5 GB included by T-Mobile (I have not done any tethering with my Note 3 yet sinceI have wifi via my cable internet at home and have not needed it on vacation yet either).
Nevertheless, I am still interested in exploring the technique described here to get it for free beyond the 2.5 GB (never know when I might be on vacation and don't want to risk going over).
PS: Here is a similar thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2467193

I am going to try this technique for the next few days. Thanks for the post! I have been using the WIFI Tether- Treve Mod for the last few months with no many issues. I did have to use the user agent switcher for chrome though. Last month I used 28GB of mobile data.

Processes
When i was on US Cellular There was a process that was called "synchronos" that was designed to check with US cellular's network to see if you were able to tether, and "police" the amount of data you were allowed to tether. I just switched to T-Mobile today.. I havent found that process yet.. Anyone know what process T-Mobile uses to check the status of your tethering package? I can freeze it with Titanium backup and tether all i want.

OK, question from a noobie - at least where tethering comes in.
I've been reading this thread (forgive if I should have done this at the end of the most recent message, not familiar with appropriate
protocol) and want to clarify my own understanding while questioning UA.
I migrated from Verizon and immediately came upon the 2.5 Gig limit everyone is talking about. I found an on-line resource that showed me
how to change my Access Point Name from T-Mobile US (apn = epc.tmobile.com) by creating a new one with apn = ipv4.
Now I'm able to tether without T-Mobile sending me notifications with respect to their 2.5 Gig limit.
Question: Have I effectively by-passed their limit by doing this, or do I also have to look at UA switching? I'll have to admit I'm not at all
familiar with the UA thing.
I'm tethering my Galaxy Note 3, while my wife is tethering her Ipad 4 (using Chrome.)
Just don't want to get hit with a big bill for the extra Gigs.
Thanks a lot.

It's a VERY valid concern. Anyone that has hit the limit on tethering will tell you that T-Mobile DOES NOT give you more tether data and bill you later. They will stop you and suggest you purchase more. No unexpected big bills should be in your future due to tethering.

Idiots Guide to Tethering
I know this may seem like a silly request, perhaps even an unfair one, but I've been looking for a way to tether my T-Mobile Samsung Note 3 device since I switched from Sprint using the iPhone device last November.
I downloaded Fox Fi, Hotspot Toggle, and so many other apps I read about on blogs. This is the closest one that addresses a problem I've been running into.
When it comes to technology and setting things up, I'm a complete moron. Some of the terms I know little about, which is why I'm hoping someone could post the process for setting up our phones in steps, and from what I've read so far, what web browsing software not to use or only use when tethering our devices on a Mac, iPad or other devices. I've been traveling back and forth to Fresno in Central California to care for my ailing mother, and the ony wifi signal I got was from my phone. Unfortunately, 2.5GB disappears quickly, and I can't be increasing my Hotspot data plan every time I visit home.
Thank you one and all for being supportive and understanding.
Hi
I've been using a Lollipop 5.0.1 Note 4 port ROM on my Note 3, tethering worked like a charm. I've used up to 125GB monthly for the past 4 months on T-Mobile tethering to my Mac, AppleTV, tablets, desktops, laptops... you name it. Obviously custom ROMs aren't perfect. Battery life is horrible, NFC & GPS doesn't work, Bluetooth and WiFi issues, some stock apps don't work as they should, etc...
I had to upgrade to T-Mobile's Official firmware due to a big malfunction that erased all my data and almost bricked my device. Immediately rooted and downloaded a Deodexed and Knox free Tmo firmware. In just a day I hit the cap on my 5GB tethering plan and my speeds have been reduced to 128kb... Spotify doesn't even load any music on my iPad and I don't even wanna try loading Netflix on my AppleTV.
I've been wondering wth makes a custom ROM able to tether freely and how I could apply that to my "almost" stock ROM. I've read so many threads and comments, applied some suggestions and used some apps and none works for me. I'm not a developer neither a noob, but any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks

Wifi Tethering No Upsell and NO USER AGENT SPOOFING [Solved] [UPDATED - 10/21/2014]

I have spent over a year trying to resolve the tethering issue with T-Mobile and their upsell page that appears after you have maxed your hotspot data limit. It seems that some people can get around it using 'user agent spoofing' while others don't need to. I thought I would share my latest findings on this topic. I have successfully enabled Wi-Fi Tethering without needing to use user agent spoofing when using Windows browsers. This was achieved hours after T-Mobile sent me a text saying my hotspot data limit had been reached. First, a rundown of my Note 3:
T-Mobile Note 3
TWRP 2.8.0.0 Recovery
HyperDrive ROM Release 5
Compulsion Kernel 16
Wifi Tether v3.4 experimental ( http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...e=wifi_tether_v3_4-experimental1.apk&can=2&q= )
There are some screenshots below showing my settings:
MSS Clamping (MSS Clamping only appears in the options when using a kernel that supports it).
Routing Fix should be also checked.
Update: Just updated my Hyperdrive ROM to ver. 5 and I had to switch the device profile to Galaxy S3 to get it to work. Not sure why but using the device profile for the Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) stopped working.
UPDATE 2: I also failed to mention that, for me at least, I have to start tethering twice before it shows up as a wireless connection. Not sure why but it just can't be seen the first time you launch it after a fresh boot ...for me anyway. So, if it doesn't work the first time just stop it and fire it up again. Should be golden from then on!
UPDATE 3: Another update? So soon? Well, yes because I seem to keep forgetting to mention important details. A.D.D. at work! Heh! Ok, first off I highly recommend using Googles DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) as you will most likely have problems if you don't. Place them in the ip4 properties of your PC's wireless adapter.
It's important to note that sometimes you will not acquire DNS when connecting to your hotspot. This is fixed by simply selecting the 'T-Mobile Tethering' APN prior to activating Wi-Fi tethering.
I haven't changed anything else from within Android or with any other apps.
Please post your results because defeating the upsell page has been an ongoing problem for me and many others and this has resolved it for me. I have full tethering access on my PC at LTE speeds as though it was a dedicated internet connection.
NO MORE USER AGENT SWITCHING!
Please hit the thank you button if this has helped you. Best of luck!

Defeating the upsell page is easy
First of all if you can enable the hotspot on your device you can use any mobile device without seeing the upsell page as the system relies on USER AGENT STRINGS to identiry your device. So on windows or mac firefox or chrome install a user agent switcher. Then use it to choose say chrome for android. Simply refresh the page and you are up and running. Some pages will not always display right as you will get the mobile version. You can also run programs such as utorrent and teamviewer without modifications through the hotspot. Any questions just ask..

This works without needing User Agent mods and doesn't trigger the upsell page even after your Hotspot limit has been exceeded.
Nice! !!
Awesome!!! Works like you said. Thx. ...
Thank you so much, this worked great..I use to always have a problem connecting my ps3 to my phone, would get the upsell page immediately, but now it seems to be working fine, I can go online with my ps3 using your settings. Been looking for a long time for a way to do this. Once again thank you. I did not see the option to check MSS clamping, but it seems to work fine.
Can't get this to work on Tweaked 3.9 for the Note 3. Not that it's needed, since native tethering works without any tethering data usage ever being detected. But I've always liked this app and native tethering takes several minutes for data to flow properly.

Did you try it with the Compulsion 16 kernel? I couldn't get it to work originally until I installed it. Not 100% sure that it matters yet as I haven't done any more testing without it or with other kernels. I don't want to mess with it too much as it's my main phone for home/work and home internet.

please help.
I have the new hyper drive as well. I have been battling a issue for a few days now and I am so happy I found this. Heres my issue, I use my hot spot as well as teathering every day. But I also tend to flash back and forth between ROMs as well, so its impossible for me to pin point how much hot spot data I used. Any way, it worked fine but now this happens....
first it will connect to my laptop, the phone shows its connected my laptop says connected as well yet it is limited access on the laptop with out internet access. When I switch it off to try again the hot spot on the phone will not even connect. It just fails over and over and over. After a reboot it starts the proccess over again. I am running the hyper drive ROM on my n900t
Is this better than wifi tether router? Because it works really good and i dont even have to setup anything I just turn it on and thats it!!

I got the message today that I reached my 5gb tethering limit.. So I installed this and followed the screenshots. I'm on compulsion kernal, with effortless ROM. No dice my internet still won't tether even after changing the APN to T-Mobile tether..
