I've just noticed what looks like a chip on the depth-sensing camera, has this happened to anyone before? I'll attach a photo of it when I'm at home.
Thanks

I see a white dot in front of the top camera, is that what you're talking about?
Anything visible in photos? If not, I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah, that's the one, its not very visible on the photo but in person, it looks like a bit of dust on the lens itself.
I haven't taken many photos that utilise the duo camera setup yet so I'm not sure, it's more that its there than any affect it has

The Duo Camera is always in use, as the edit effects UFocus and Dimension Plus (and maybe others) utilize it. So if the "dot" is not visible in photos, I wouldn't worry about it.
Might in fact be dust. I actually also have a small white speck between the protective glass and the camera module. I noticed it soon after I got the phone, and it doesn't seem to have affected anything. Always assumed it was just dust. Although you would think they would assemble these things in a cleaner, more dust-free environment.

But ah ok, that's reassuring to know I'm not the only one and it doesn't have an apparent affect

I've noticed that the stock htc camera is bad for taking photos
when i had Acer liquid with acer stream camera photos quality was really good
now i'm asking: is a software issue or what? also liquid with stock camera was bad,but only changing the application, the quality was a lot better
any suggestion? which parameters do you use with desire ? ( like saturation, brightness, iso etc)
Attacched photos to see differences ( sorry aren't 100% the same but you can notice the difference)
Just to know (I have pretty the same problem).
Try to make a photo without the back cover.
mmm tried but didn't noticed difference...
you noticed difference without backcover??
Camera indeed sucks. So what other camera applications are available?
Retro Camera and FX Camera. Those are not really for replacement.

Yes, I can clearly see the difference with and without the cover. Especially when making videos but also with photos.
Would be great to port camera from other devices.. also the google camera ( source camera) is better as i saw.. is possibile to port to all roms?
the camera of acer stream is awesome with awesome settings, but don't know if will be possible to ort to desire..
You right! without back cover there is a very visible difference!
Why this and how to solve?
Here you can see the difference with and without the backcover. For me, it's because of the plastic used for the lens. It spoil out using the phone with time.
You can try to remove the plastic or replace the cover. I have not found a good solution yet. For now... I just remove the cover when needed (thanks god I don't make a lot of photos)

a friend of mine was at a clockmaker. He just drills out the plastic cover and glues a saphire-glass in, now its a scratch free and HQ camera cover. Costs are around 20 Euro including work (it lasts 10 Minutes). But you need and old-style clock-maker with its own repair-shop.
I like Vignette alot. Well worth the money, really professional-ish look & feel to it.

someone has home-made solution working?
Or for 20 € I've found a battery cover replacement.

But it's brown or silver . And it will get scratched in no time, like in the original one. Brian's solution is definitive.
Have you tried cleaning really well on the inside, as well on the outside ? Mine is a bit scratched too, but I can't see much difference when taking photos. (can you ? http://picasaweb.google.com/101504838761028525419/CoverOnCoverOffCleanedCoverLens?feat=directlink)

Mine aint scratched but I still notice a different without cover so replacing it with glass seems to be only option other then removing cover everytime you wanna take a pic/vid.

Your pictures seem much more to what I am experiencing taking photos. Hardly(if any) difference cover on or off. I did notice there isn't a lot of color in your pictures.
Tbh, I don't think having a tiny smudge on the cover affects the quality that much as andycted demonstrated. The real limitation is that after all, its a phone camera.
Try using different camera app's with some image-enhancing effects. I recommend Vignette, try it out!

I'm inside, in a very drab cloudly light coming from the window. Indeed the default settings for the camera (stock froyo) lack a bit of saturation, I forgot to set it to +1.
I remember noticying quite a lot of difference and thinking that since my protector is scratched, that was the cause. Turns out it was greasy on the outside, as well as the inside, as I remove the cover every other day to change battery
EDIT: I've added a couple of shots with +1 and +2 saturation and one where the autoflash went off

I didn't take the pain to change the settings, or to take great pics, it's a chair and a bottle ! it was just in order to compare lens on/off photos, in every day conditions and the difference isn't all that great. My lens is scratched too.
Stock camera is ugly to see, dodgy in some stuff, but has a ton of functionality. I can't, even remotely, be called a photographer, but I had some fun while going for a walk some minutes ago.

The sky was very grey and light quite dim, so I tried to play with exposure and saturation, burning the sky and pretty much everything else in the process. A couple shoots aren't bad though. Try to guess which are with and without lens cover hehe.
Okay, so I know no one likes the look of themselves when they catch glimpse of their face in selfie mode when you first open an app like Snapchat or front-facing cam is already activated when you go to take a pic etc, but, wow, I feel like a monster when I see how I look using the Note 7.
Arm fully stretched out and the pics/video look great, but why is it so disgustingly distorted up close? My head looks so long and weird. I know front-facing cams have always had a little distortion, but I've never experienced it this bad before (coming from 9 years of iPhones and brief flings with a Galaxy Note 1 and a LG G3).
Can anyone explain why? Will any of us have an ounce of self-esteem left after a few weeks of use?! lol
Sorry to say but you might just be ugly.

Don't get me wrong, holding the phone with arm fully extended to take a selfie produces great results (with or without settings changed). I'm talking about when it's close to the face. The lens makes things look really out of shape. Never seen anything like it on a phone before.

I think because it is a wide angle lens so the edges of the camera lens makes you look a little weird. That's less so the case with the portion of the image that's more centered. Is the entire image distorted or only the edge portion of it?
mines super wide to what im accustomed too. Looks silly
Try to put your face in the middle of the camera, not near the edges.... Everything near the edges will look a little distorted since the camera is spheric and the image is a square, so thats just a weird effect.
When you use other apps that take 4:3 pictures you won´t notice this distortion because you are not using the edges of the camera, it will only happen in 16:9 pictures.
Basically every phone nowadays. Every one wants a wider selfie camera but don't realize wide lenses have a big byproduct. DISTORTION.
EVERYONE WANTS A WIDE ANGEL CAMARA. NOT SURE YOU KNOW EVERYONE, but if that was true then every one is an dumb *as. Wide angel is for scenery to shoot landscape not to point at once face and look like a blower fish.
My phone is useless with this wide angel camera and the idiots at Google messed up since the camera app was supposed to correct the image but doesnt work. SO we should be asking for a recall and a refund, but we are so stupid that we just deal with it. THis is a defect people. I have go pro with wide angel camera and my face doesnt look like long or fat head. COMPLAIN PEOPLE AND GET A REPLACEMENT OR A YOUR MONEY BACK> I"m a professional photographer, so I'm telling you. You all got scammed
Hello,
Today when taking photos I've noticed that light sources like lightbulbs and chandeliers appear twice in photo. It's hard to describe, but attached photos should clarify what I'm talking about.
I've checked on other phone, Honor 8X and it's same.
And here's my question to you: do you observe the same behaviour, or my device is flawed?

I don't know if it's worth using warranty with my Note 10+ if it's the general issue.
I took a direct photo of my desk lamp and there's nothing wrong, I'll try again later tonight using different angles/sources.
I googled it and this problem is widely commented on:

Thank you for the link. So it seems like this can be considered "normal".
However I'm still curious what will be result of your tests. Please share what was the outcome, whether you were able to reproduce this.
It depends on the angle, sometimes you will see this, some times not, I have seen this in dedicated cameras as well
Thank you for your response.
As I'm testing it more, it seems very hard to take photo without ghost lights when not pointing straight into light source, attached few more sample files.
Maybe I'll get over it, if not I'll give it a go, and use warranty, they'll do something with this or not.
Hello,
That's amazing to see this post today, just the day i noticed exactely the same.
I noticed that when doing a video test, through windows stores (the room was in the dark, light going thru the little holes in the stores). I had exactely the same kind of little lights reproduced in the left quarter of the frame.
I thought it was due to the shape of the lens, some kind of light reflexion on it, but now i am wondering because that is the EXACT same thing as your description.
I would not send to warranty... since i had exactely the same 'problem'. I believe it is due to lens design.

I believe you have the same, but don't know how often you see these lights.
I can understand this can be seen in some conditions, but as I'm testing it more, I almost can't take any photo without it.
I've looked through YouTube reviews with some night shots and can't see it there.
Attaching last two samples, to not spam this thread, as maybe I'm now oversensitive on this
I'll go to the store today, and see what they'll say.

Went on tonight to my favorite night photography places and the full moon was the perfect source of light to look into the "ghosting" thing. It's really easy to see what's happening with the light when moving the camera around its axis. Note 10 has a rather thick glass covering/protecting the lenses and the light entering the camera is being distorted by the inner and outer surfaces of the glass plate depending on the angle of entry.
I was having really boring Sunday today so I'm glad I found something to do because of that, and I even made a little drawing using the S-Pen(love the s-pen!) to illustrate directional changes of light while entering/exiting a medium of different densities (air/glass)
We know that light will get reflected by a glass at certain degree because of different density between air and glass. Basic physics. Our camera is made of multiple layers of lens with variables angle. So if 99% of light goes through the lens, 1% get reflected. We won't see it for normal light. But if the light source is very bright, even 1% will be visible on photo.
That's my hypothesis.
Happens all the time when facing a lamp light directly, with wide and zoom lens. But seems to be less visible with ultra-wide.
This looks like an internal reflection within the camera it's self.
Internal reflections are common on multi-element lens.
You pay big bucks for coated elements and engineering to suppress this effect in pro lens.
Internal reflections can also happen between the cmos sensor and any of the internal optics.
In the case the cover element is a prime suspect.
Lol, you can thousands for a pro shooting system and you will still find this.
Folks; unsure whether it's the device, the camera app or just me, but: Is it (im)possible to shoot really "sharp" images using the M51 stock camera app or hardware? Using this in various situations, it basically seems to boil down to a _very_ limited range of focus within the image with everything outside being slightly blurred which looks quite bad especially on "natural" structures (trees / leaves). From a mere "optic" point of view it feels like the camera hardly has any depth-of-field and there seems no way to fix this. Is there...?
Thanks in advance and all the best,
Kristian
Samsung Stock Camera is very bad at sharpness/HDR, it tries as much as possible to denoise pictures, and the front image processing is even more disappointing on many devices I've tried/used.
Using Google Camera, it feels very different, as there's manual settings, you can increase/decrease sharpness, saturation, hue, AWB, ...
So the problem is not the hardware but the camera app. Depth Camera works fine on objects/persons.
Consider trying the GCam that suits you from here. I can modify sharpness as low/high as I want.

Depends on the mod you are using, there's a lot of mods, each has his features, but most of them has lib patcher, allowing the modification of image processing library.
For an example, here's how you find sharpness on tigr GCam mod. It has a lot of controls. You can use xml files to load some ready-made configurations. Sometimes configuration may not be compatible with your device, then you'll need to clear app data and try another one.

Anytime, mate.
Replying to myself as recommendation / hint to future readers: All my fault. Period.
Longer answer: When ordering the M51, I applied a screen protector glass - to both the main display and the camera cut-out, in order to protect the camera when having the phone in my pocket. After spending quite some time playing around with this, I learnt that apparently the screen protector placed in front of the camera lens causes a drastic loss of quality (and, thinking a few moments longer about physics and refraction of light in different media, this is pretty obvious).
So: Without this thing on my lenses, quality is ages better. Don't use screen protectors in front of your M51 camera.

Uh .. never thought about this, because I thought it was obvious since 2014 or something that full screen protectors do cause problems with phone sensors, and front camera.
I couldn't find a screen protector with camera cutout for my A70, so I had to crack it manually.

You can take selfies with the ones on the back by using the front screen preview function, which requires the phone to be open in order to use it for selfies. I'm guessing that is the reason. Also, the pictures from the inside camera were vastly improved with the last update.

Yeah, I used to hate selfies with the inner camera because even though the image looked good when it was live preview, the pics were crazy soft, fairly unusable, but now they are as sharp as the live preview. The phone is a bit awkward to hold far away for a more full-body pic if I'm trying to get my outfit in it (to send a guy, as I'm a girl), so I usually have to use both hands for that. I'm not a selfie stick type of person, but I can see why it would be helpful with this phone, although I don't know if the weight of the phone along with the size would make it hard to hold up and out, especially for more than a few seconds.
I'm going to mount my phone to a tripod. I've always done this with a selfie stick, as they usually have a extra hole for this

I'm that case, you can just buy a tripod head made for tablets that adjusts to the size of the device. It cradles the device between two arms like a car phone holder does. I got one years ago for my first tablet as I'm a photographer and it had an app that connects to my camera so I can control the camera and have a bigger preview screen, as well as another app for focus stacking to control the camera/have a big preview on the tablet screen.
