I have a problem with some movies/series I'm watching on my Galaxy Tab S 10.5, the audio wont play at all sometimes. I'm using MX Player. I was watching these series (The Mentalist) and episodes were playing fine (MKV files), until I ran into one that would play but on mute, I tried playing the file on my PC and it was fine.
I looked around and apparently MKV is not supported by this tab? but why can I play a lot of other MKV files without any problem?

MKV is supported, AC3 is not. I don't know why samsung exclude AC3 audio codec from firmware. You can either try to enable software audio encoding in MX player or use VLC player, OR if you have a root acces, u can install AC3 codec. search here on XDA about how to do it.

Playing MKV without audio probleem. There is a special codec you can download somewhere on the net, just look around.
I use allplayer to play some movies that aren't supported in the default player.

What about 720p mkv files?

I'll double that! Dual core CPU support, HW/Software/QuickSoftware decoding modes, gestures and most importantly - it's free!
so mx player it is then ?
If you'll find something better and free - let me know, please
I use moboplayer. (free and no ads)
mx player is better for now as it uses the whole screen. Hopefully moboplayer will update it to use the full screen as well.
I've had problems with mx player. some mkv's were stuttering a lot (of course hw decoding was turned on), others worked.
now I'm using DICE player. it's free but has ads. so far I didn't come across any mkv that didn't play smoothly.
+1 for moboplayer. Havent had any problems with it.
I have MX, Mobo, and Dice. MX is my go to app for video as it seems to work the best for me. If I run across a file that won't play I try one of the other two.

Do the MKVs stutter ont he stock video player?
My experience is that all MKVs stutter, even if the video is easily decodable.
I think the demuxers in Android 4 are somewhat broken/buggy.
I've used dice, mx, mobo, and dice is the only one that plays audio with mkv files. Unfortunately its riddled with ads and the paid version is unavailable for purchase. Anyone run into this issue?

There was a setting that I had to change and my mkv audio started working in MX. I don't remember what it was though
The stock movie player doesn't seem to support DTS audio. Is there another player in the market that does? Without that, I will have to re-encode my movies that has DTS audio. Thanks for any help!
try Dice Player

Thanks! I installed it and tested it with a MKV movie with DTS, and it says it cannot play it.

I second that, MX player is one of the best players and its free plus there are many codecs that support many different types of files.

Weird Dice Player should be able to play everything. Check it's settings. I'll check when I get home tomorrow with my MKV's.

Here is a good thread, albeit from the S3 forum, on DTS audio
there is a plugin for dts on dice
it seems like none of those plugins are for the Samsung processor in the Note II? They are either for Tegra or Cortex?
i got a file mxlibs-176-neon.zip following a link above, and now dts audio is working with mx player.
Never mind I found it under accessibility.
vlc should play them also
If you only want to play the MKV files on your Note 2, I think MX player can do this, but if you want to play DTS audio,I am not sure this player can meet your demands.

Hello everyone, i have Blu ray rip mkv (from 20-40gb each mkv) in my usb hdd, when i play it on my Galaxy note 2 the video runs fine but without audio and when the video starts a msg appear at the bottom says something about only video is playing. I have MX player pro, PlayerPro, Real Player and i tried on all of them and on defualt video player as well. The funny thing is the tv series episodes like vampire diaries, mentalist, big bang theory i download in 720p rip mkv(from 900mb to 1.5gb) it runs perfectly. Is there some sort of codecs i need for the audio in Blu ray rips i'm trying to play or some other player.
I'll be very grateful for help.

try bsplayer.
I tried all the apps you mentioned with no luck. Bsplayer can play everything i got in my video library.
ok I will, Thanks.
I use dice player. It's played anything I've thrown at it so far and it has a pop up feature as well.
With MX Player Pro try going into settings and changing it from H/W to S/W.. That's what I use and everything I watched plays just fine
bs player handsdown. i tried them all, non of them would play DTS audio mkv file except bs player. unfortunately, stock samsung has better video quality but no sound lol
Actually the stock player should be able to handle them.
I have mx player installed and bs player also.
One thing that bs player has that others don't, playing videos over a Windows share. You can play music videos back to back without needing to select the next song.

Both myself and my brother have played mkv files on our devices with no issues. I have the note II and he has an s III .... not sure what the issue is you are having but I don't think it is the video player... I use stock, so does he.
+1 for BSPlayer, also consider Archos with the additional Codec Add-on
I've found that on my version of the Note II, MXPlayer Pro, the default Video Player, IMToo, all did not work because of the lack of an AC3 codec.
The ones that worked were:
- Archos Video Player (with the Codec Add-On installed)
- BSPlayer
- VLC, however does not play .m4v files
- XBMC, however lags on playback
In the end it was between Archos and BSPlayer. The Archos Player has a better UI along with the ability to bookmark within the video. BSPlayer has the capability of resizing the video to any size, and locking the aspect ratio on-screen. It also connects to opensubs.org to download external subs on the fly, if needed.
Being an XBMC / OpenELEC user, since I'm comfortable with the interface and the plug-in system, I'm hoping that it will be optimized for Android in the future. When that day comes, I will switch back to XBMC. But for now, I flip back between Archos and BS Player.
Thanks for your help guys, my problem is solved

WMV isn't playing in H/W mode. I purchased MXplayer and I'm having difficulty playing back WMV files. They play, but the audio and video is not in sync. The video is slowed down and I noticed that the videos only play in S/W mode. Any way to fix it? I'm currently playing back multiple types of WMV files mainly school lectures in WMV format.

Did you DL the A7+Neon codec plugin?
Also, can be supported natively, but you have to add a few lines to the media encoder xml file. You can find a guide in the N7 forum somewhere.
Is this the thread you are talking about GSLEON3?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517925
That is the thread for native. Also go to Play Store & download the MX A7+Neon codec app. It enables MX to handle more formats. Above will just allow them to be HW rendered, or played in the stock gallery app.

I have a bunch of AVI files. I never had a problem playing these on any device and then I recently got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and found out that half of these will not play (no video or audio). I tried Vplayer, Mxplayer, QQplayer, archos player, and several others along with the built in player.
The files that seem to play correctly have the following settings.
Type: video
Codex M-PEG-4 Video (XVID)
Res: 640x272
frame rate: 23.976043
Decoded format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV
Stream1:
Type: Audio
Code: MPEG Audio Layer 1/2/3 (mpga)
Channel: Stereo
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
Bitrate: 128 kb/s
The files that don't play seem to have some sort of difference such as XVID video, but AC3 audio, or 640x428 res instead of 640x272, 44hz mp3 audio instead of 48000hz or I also tried to convert an AVI to MP4 with aac audio and that would not play either. I have watched these sort of files for years with no issue on windows based computers, ipad, set top media players etc. Any help is appreciated. I really don't want to have to convert video's every time. I will this time if that's the only way.
Have you ty using mx player o any other in this tab? I use last mx player pro and even can play mkv with embedded subs

I just noticed standard MKV and MP4 downloaded from the net, seems to play fine but even when I covert AVI XVID to one of these other formats it won't work.
