[Q] Will Rooting Fix my Camera? - Sony Xperia M

Hi Folks,
I have an Xperia M phone and a few months ago the camera started to fail loading. It worked every so often but now it doesn't work at all just gives the error "Unfortunately Camera has stopped"
I have tried Factory Resets and tried downgrading the phone to the previous Android version just to see but it's still not working.
I'm guessing at this stage it might be hardware but just checking before I go down that road. If I rooted it would there be anything in there that might fix the camera?
Has anyone else done this and fixed this kind of problem.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide on this. I know it's only a budget phone but it does everything I need so if I can save it then all the better
Cheers

Try it. Go with towelroot. But I suspect you'll end in repair shop anyway. Did you try some other camera app?

Yea I tried a few of them, sometimes the front camera works but it usually doesn't get that far.

[Q] Arc camera often not available

Hi all, I've got my Arc for two weeks, it seems that sometimes the camera is not available when I launch the application. It always happen when the accelerometer doesn't work. It works fine again when I reboot the phone.
Anyone else got this issue? Do I have to repair via SEUS or there is another way around?
Thanks

Nope, I used the camera many times and not even once I saw this issue. It's best to do a repair firmware to rule out that it's not a software issue. Once done and you are facing the problem, then it could be the hardware faulty and you need to bring the phone to service centre for repair.

I am having exactly the same issue. Had phone 2 days now and many unstable aspects from day 1 and ongoing.
Camera is sometimes 'not available' - interestingly at the same time other things don't work such as the accelerometer.
Phone reboots randomly by itself including during phone calls.
Items downloaded from market disappear .
I am returning it and hoping for a replacement as I do not want a 'repaired' phone after paying so much.
Also should note I have made no changes to the phone at all - this is 'as delivered'
I had this happen a couple of times. When it does I just go to the app manager and force stop the camera app. It should work again after that.
Never had the problem with camera not being available... although most times my photos dont work... its like a black broken image icon that shows instead...

Thanks - Your problem must be different, as this solution does not work for me.The app manager does not show the camera as running, so no force close option is available.
Only way to get the camera to function when the phone is in this 'camera not available' mode is to reboot. Every time the camera is not available the accelerometer stops working as well - again a reboot is required to fix this
^ Yes it is, reboot solved it. But I'm curious, is it a bug or a fail hardware?
I have the same problem. The camera app fails to launch. I long press camera button and get the haptic feedback but nothing happens.
for me it's just the shutter button
never had this problem
but my camera doesn't activate when i press the shutter.
any ideas?
ps: i have vignette demo and fxcamera installed
pps: the arc camera is brilliantly EXCELLENT (coming from a G1)
ppps: the shutter button is terribly stiff
had the same problem but SEUS fix it for me by reflashing the firmware.
The phone should be awake when you press on camera button inorder the camera app to launch

Camera stays on after been used, i think its not possible to quit it with adv task killer, so i downloaded app "fast reboot pro" so test it when u get it back, and it also works with apps, i have seen that issue few times, just click to reboot and it will be good.
just a thought or two..
have you try resetting or calibrating those sensor?
or do you have any app that totally disabled rotation (not just simple rotate toogle)?
Anyone found the answer to this problem? Really annoying

[Q] Samsung S3 Camera Fail

I tried searching the forum, all i found were people telling each other to take out the battery or send it back to samsung...
if you find a link that covers my problem, i humbly apologize please direct me to the thread.
okay:
i bought an s3 off kijiji (craigslist equiv) the camera does not work.
I click the camera app, app loads, picture is black, then a dialog box saying camera has failed pops up, app crashes. Repeat.
So I bought a new rear camera, i put it in and guess what! same problem.
I tried every software thing i could think of (post and pre new camera). I tried different roms, CM/PA/STOCK Mod, no luck.
I tried going into the firmware service menu with a touchwiz rom and making the two firmware numbers match as in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2006128
I tried going into app settings stopping the camera app and clearing the cache.
Now i am out of ideas and i seek better men/women to help me.
I have a new camera, i just bought, and the old camera.
oh before i forget: I saw the old camera work only once since i bought it, it loaded up randomly and was all glitchy green lines running down the picture. It loaded up with the front facing camera part which to me worked fine, then when i went to rear camera it did the glitchy ****.
sorry if my post is hard to read, im tired, and frustrated with this thing.

Sounds like hardware failure to me man,. sorry to say it. Have you used odin to bring you back to full stock? did the device come rooted?
There are 2 tests you could do (though they're probably the same). This requires you to be on a stock ROM.
From the dialler, enter:
*#0*# General Test Mode
*#7353# Quick Test Menu
Then, the choices are obvious.
Look at the board closely. Examine the traces on the board coming from the camera connections and where the camera connectors plug into the board for any signs of a white powdery substance. Dendrites will form on circuit boards and short out the associated electronics. If you don't have a warranty, it would be worth it to get some high grade isopropal alcohol and give the board a good rinse. You may even scrub the affected area with a good clean tooth brush and then flush it again. Let it dry thoroughly and then reassembly it. It would help to get some of that canned air and blow it off as well. I've had that work more than once on delicate electronics that have gone south.

using odin to bring back to full stock is the only thing ive yet to try.
When i got the phone it wasn't rooted.
I guess the last thing i will do is try the new camera with ODIN stock.
i really doubt it would make a difference.

that is the first thing i did actually. i was afraid it may of been water damage. the phone is taken apart infront of me right now. I dont see any sign of white spots. it looks clean as a whistle.
I really dont understand why its still failing even with a new camera.
DO any of you know weather If only the front camera fails will the entire camera app fail?
Also the front camera and the proximity sensor are tied together as one unit. and the proximity sensor works fine.
also ive mentioned that ive seen the camera work once. so ....I just dont know...
It's either a hardware problem (other than the camera itself), or it's a software problem. I would revert to stock & run one of the hardware tests I mentioned previously. That should rule in or out a software cause.
Update:
I used :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2363882&highlight=unroot
to unroot and go full stock...
still nothing.
i did those tests from *#7353# Quick Test Menu
it fails on both rear and front camera..And the REAR camera is the new one?!?!?! wtf.
does anyone know if one camera does not work they both dont? (since i replaced my rear camera, it may of been the front camera this whole time that didnt work.) i wish i was rich so i can buy another phone to test my hardware with.
do you think its a mainboard problem? - i guess thats all that is left.....

I experienced the same problem last few days. It started the next day I rooted the phone. I tried all the ways I found on the net, none worked for me. I even formatted the internal drive. Problem was still there.
Then I flashed Task650's AOKP rom and surprisingly the camera started to work. So I guess it maybe as stated in the forum, the driver, for some reason, was not in the correct folder. I guess flash any 4.2.2 rom will fix the problem. I am now running on liquid rom. Hope this can be a little help?

out of pure desperation i tried this method.
and it did not work same old message
either
gallery has failed
failed to open camera
worth mentioning:
when i am in stock rom, there is a feature that detects your eyes to make sure the screen should stay on. It works. It says it uses front camera to achive this functionality but...alas my camera does not work.
What can i do to help you help me.
im totally at a loss for words i dunno what to do
I was experiencing the problem last week on Stock Rogers ROM 4.1.1.
I tried restarting, battery pulls, formatting and taking apart the phone to disconnect/reconnect the camera.
Nothing worked and I was convinced it was a hardware problem.
As a last resort I flashed the stock Rogers 4.1.2 update and the camera started working again.
I flashed back to 4.1.1 and the camera stopped. Not sure what was causing the problem though.
If your on the new 4.1.2 bootloaders and running 4.1.1 the rear cam won't work, flash the old lk3 bootloaders.

It looks like a software problem
I had the same problem.
Rear and front Camera gave SOMETIMES "Camera Faild" error.
It looks like a software problem which uses the camera or the flash.
Many users saying that the problem is resolved after signin out from Skype.
For me the case was the Flashligt software. You can try to find out which software can be the cause.
I hope this is the problem and you all will find out the software which causes the error.

[Q] "Cannot connect to Camera" on Stock/Stock based ROM after Play Services 09/19

[Q] "Cannot connect to Camera" on Stock/Stock based ROM after Play Services 09/19
Hey guys,
So recently Google Play Services updated itself and my camera suddenly stopped working. Yesterday when this happened, I got the "Cannot connect to Camera" error running Task650's initial 4.3 release. I decided maybe it was time for a clean odin and decided to update through Samsung Kies to initialize the firmware to stock. This wiped everything including internal SD so it was a completely fresh start. I then tried using the camera, and it worked for about fifteen minutes until all the updates through Google Play came in. As soon as play services updated, the next time I tried running my camera I got the same Cannot connect to camera message, except this time on a completely stock, un-rooted ROM. I then decided that maybe I should flash again, so I did, making sure to wipe everything. It was working, but this time I kept auto updates off and didn't update any ROMs.
Next, I rooted and flashed Dandroid 4.7 and my camera was working flawlessly all day. Until I tried using snapchat and it required a google play services update. To verify my theory, I updated, and voila, my camera was no longer functional.
So my question is, is there any way around using Google Play Services, or is there a way to flash a version of the app thats not the oldest, but before the newest update? Cause currently I can only revert to factory settings which seems to upset a lot of apps.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Additional info in case you need it: SGH-I747M from Fido. Stock Kernel. Currently running Dandroid 4.7 but this problem has appeared on un-bastardized TW as well as AOKP.
UPDATE: I now also get the Camera failed error instead of Cannot Connect to Camera
Now even if I uninstall Play Services updates my camera won't come back online. It's dead forever
Have you tried clearing data and cache for camera, followed by a reboot?

I'm in the same boat as you. I originally had the problem using Hyperdrive and a phone without a camera is close to useless so I tried task650's rom again due to having such good experiences in the past with it. My camera worked for a day and I wasn't paying close enough attention to my phone to be able to make an accurate prediction as to why it stopped. I'm considering throwing my hands up in the air and blaming AT&T in hopes of getting a new phone because I've gone stock and back multiple times with the same problem. I can only speculate what the problem is though..would a logcat be beneficial in any way to help narrow this down?
Side note leading up to camera problems: For a while my phone's accelerometer was severely bugged and forced my screen into landscape. Even root apps claiming to force screen orientation modes failed to fix this problem. After this I went bone stock and then used Hyperdrive for a month. 3 weeks in and my camera started acting up; I couldn't take a normal picture, every one was corrupted and had colorful bars blocking over 50% of the image. This problem was fixed by taking about 4 very different pictures in terms of brightness and colors. Later though both the stock camera that comes with Hyperdrive and the AOSP camera would crash whenever I tried using my front facing camera. This eventually led me to where I am currently using task650's rom with no functioning camera. Please help D:
I'll help in every way possible to fix this problem.

It did not fix it permanently. I was going to edit my post but I'm a new user still and got distracted during the 5 min post limit. Switching to the front facing camera makes the problem come back. Tonight I'll be going bone stock and if the problem persists would that be proof of hardware failure?

I wouldn't assume its a hardware ASAP but it could be a bug caused by Google. Try going to stock by Odin to see if issue still occurs.

Already tried this multiple times, but thank you! Anyway I sent it back to Samsung to get everything dealt with. I thought might as well report all the other things wrong with it (over heating, slow charging, and now the camera). They said up to 21 days, and gave me the ****tiest Blackberry I have ever seen as a loaner phone. I hate Canadian cell phone carriers. I remember back in the states they'd replace it on the spot under manufacturer's warranty. Seriously **** Fido.
Anyway I'm done ranting and that was off topic so I guess I'll report back here when my phone is back and we'll see if it was hardware or not. Thanks everyone!
Okay after going back to stock my rear camera worked upon opening the application, but when I switched to the front facing camera I got the "can't connect to camera" error and the app force closed. And once you switch between either the rear or front camera, the selected one will become your default...regardless if I clear data/cache for the gallery application and reboot (this worked the first time I switched to the front camera though but not anymore). So now I have no functioning camera and I'm one month out of the 1 year Samsung warranty so I'm pretty frustrated with my situation because I take pictures daily with my phone. Tomorrow I will take the phone to a highly rated cell phone repair shop in my area since I found OEM parts on ebay including a front facing camera and I'm confident they'll be able to replace it.

Don't pay for them to replace the front facing camera for you. You can it yourself. Its an easy fix.. Just have the screw driver and patience to follow a YouTube video on opening the S3. I assure you that once you see how to do it (simple unplug from motherboard) you'll thank me for saving you repair and labor fees.

Hey guys. I know this is an old thread, but I'm just posting since my problem is now resolved and if in the future anyone else has this problem they can learn from mine.
So the service center for Samsung here in Montreal is absolute crap, and it took them three tries, over three months, to fix my phone. The final repair code given was 072 and the keyword was Solder (Ressouder in French) which I'm guessing means they had to re-solder the connection to the camera back to the motherboard. Seems to be working fine now.

Camera not detected at all

So issue started as follows:
a. For a few days, I've noticed that camera will give very blurry photos and videos. I tried a few things (including cleaning laser/camera lens with a cloth), but it wouldn't work.
b. Decided to restart phone today and see if that helps (turn off and on right?)
c. I now get error "Unable to start the camera" when I tap on the camera app.
I have tried the following:
a. install 3rd party app - won't work
b. restart phone (multiple times) - won't work
c. clear data/clear cache, disable, enable, remove permissions and allow permissions for Camera app - won't work
d. reboot phone in safe mode - won't work
e. Go into diagnostic mode using #*#*3434*#*# to test camera. Guess what, there are no options to test camera!
f. Go into diagnostic mode and test flashlight. Flashlight won't turn on anymore. Also, I found that the system's flashlight app is gone.
All this leads me to believe that for some reason the phone is not detecting the camera hardware anymore. I'm out of ideas. I bought the phone overseas, and local HTC told me to return it overseas or pay a handling fee of $100 and they'll look at it, but will probably not be able to do anything anyway.
Phone is just a bit over 1 month old.
Any ideas?
I'm having the same problem. I'm rooted on unlocked HTC 10 on stock 2.41.617.3. I'm S-On. I've tried force stop and delete cache and data. Tried safe mode and tried a 3rd party camera app. I just got by phone back from HTC to repair the camera and it worked before flashing the January security update and rooting it. Afterwards, I now get "unable to start the camera"

So, I completely wiped data and reset factory settings, but camera still wouldn't start.
Flashed phone back to Taiwanese version, and it's now working, but original issues are back, i.e. blurry camera that can't focus on anything. I restarted phone a few times to see if it would go back to "unable to start the camera", but it's still working, just blurry and unable to focus. I'm still going through the various updates now. Have notification for Nougat. will try that and test camera again.
[UPDATE]
Interesting update: So, I upgraded to Nougat just now, and after restarting, I tested camera, it's not working anymore. Here's my speculation: 1) camera module (hardware) is broken/fkd up/stuffed, but only partly? Whereas Android 6 will let it work, but blurry and no focus, Android 7 just won't let it work at all. That's just my theory that makes a little sense atm. Anyone else?
I think you are correct, i would send it for warranty (if you still have that)
Good luck !
I did a hard reset and the camera started working again.

Lucky! Is yours ANY blurry or is it fully functional? Also, if it stops working again, check whether your flashlight works (mine wouldn't/isn't).

It was blurry when I purchased it used. That's why I sent it back to HTC since it was under warranty. It looked like it was a bad auto focus module, although HTC never said so. Fixed and was working well, then today (after the reset I posted about), then today it stopped working. I'm going to RUU tonightor tomorrowand install apps one by one. It seems to be softwa rerelated.

I'm sure it will work if you go to android 6, but it will be blurry. It won't work after you restart in android 7. That's my experience
My wife's 10 was having this issue. Neither a factory reset nor an RUU helped. But randomly it just started working for her. There were app updates from Google for photos and chrome but I have no idea if they're related but nothing else changed. Really strange!
Edit: a day later the camera is not working again.

I've been experiencing the very same problem and the only thing that helps is hard reset or RUU. It doesn't always work on the first try, but after 3-4 attempts the camera starts working perfectly for a period of time -- sometimes a week, sometimes a month and a half (my personal record, which was set a few days ago, when camera died again). Then I always have one day of the focus getting disabled followed by a complete shutdown with all the symptoms described by OP (no flashlight icon, 'unable to start' message). Has anyone found a permanent solution to this problem?
I have the same problem with my htc
I have the same problem on a non-rooted Verizon HTC 10... the camera app won't open, the flashlight won't work, the camera shortcuts disappeared from the top Nougat menu, and any other app I try says it can't find the camera.
I'm unable to find any troubleshooting or debugging methods yet... any suggestions? I have Android Studio but I haven't learned much of it, I'm wondering if Developer mode or the Studio USB debugging can help...

A few things that seem to have helped some people are:
removing SD card and restarting the phone without it;
clearing camera app's cache;
uninstalling all 3rd party apps that might be interfering with the camera;
RUU-ing the phone with an official firmware (you don't need root or S-OFF for that, as long as you don't try to downgrade from Nougat to Marshmallow).
Nothing but the last method worked for me. Though it doesn't do the trick every time and even when it does, it is only a temporary solution, as the problem keeps popping up again after a while. Last time the camera in my HTC 10 started working without any software interference from my side: I went on a hike in cold weather and, as I hypothesise, something about it (temperature differential? pressure change?) restored camera functionality for a couple of weeks, after which it died again. This incident led me to believe that this is a hardware problem and the camera module simply isn't securely connected to the motherboard in our phones or something. My wild guess is that RUUing might sometimes help simply because of the heat rewriting firmware produces.

Oh *smack* sorry I forgot to mention that I already tried clearing the camera app's cache, wiping cache from recovery menu, and factory resetting the phone.
I think it's a hardware issue since I think it got a little wet from sprinklers and I read the phone isn't water resistant, and also that the camera module is flaky anyways... Verizon accidentally cancelled my insurance without telling me and I haven't seen yet that HTC covers it on warranty.
I'll try these other things you suggest, but do you think it would be worth trying to have HTC repair it? It'll be worth it for $350 or less, or I could try a local shop, though I think they'd just do the same thing I would (research it on Google, buy the necessary repair parts, then painstakingly fix it), but I've seen in repair videos that this phone is very fragile and difficult to work with, so I'm not sure all that time and effort would even be worth just buying a new version outright, and I'd like the phone to work for the eclipse!.
Same Problem here, since Saturday... [emoji85]

I actually went to a repair shop about a month ago and was told that they were certain part replacement would leave significant marks on the metal body =/ If you carry the phone in a full case, I guess this should not be a big problem. AFAIK, an official HTC repair shop would just replace the phone under warranty in cases like this due to how low simplicity of disassembly was on designers' priority list when 10 was being sketched out, but you're saying Verizon canceled your warranty?
I also face this unable to start camera.
My software no is 2.51.617.11
I live in Myanmar (Burma). No one know this problem including HTC Myanmar.
Apparently there are a handful of us who have faulty cameras. Haven't heard anything from HTC. I have tried everything listed here and more. No luck. The only way my camera works is on older firmware (1.9.xxx.xx) and running Marshmallow.
well my htc 10 started playing up today, camera wont start when you touch the camera app on the screen..ive had this phone for 9 months , my warranty expires in march 2019, ive tried all the above methods none worked, phoned HTC uk up and they said to send it in..i hope they replace it with another unit ?..if they do replace it with another unit will the wrranty be transferred over to that, ie expire in march 2019? i also noticed that the flashlight app doesnt work it just says on screen "loading"..
I have the exact same problem, tried all the suggestions, but still it says 'Unable to start camera'. I even opened up the phone, and replaced the camera with another HTC 10 which had water damage. Problem still exists, which leads me to believe that the camera isn't the issue, it might be the mainboard it's connected to in combination with Nougat? The other case can be that the broken phone I got the camera from might have the same problem.... allthough I think that's unlikely. I'd like to order another camera to make sure its not that, but can't really find one. Anyone got any further with this issue?

Camera Issue

Had to do a Zoom meeting and figured I would just use my tablet but found that neither camera was working. I rebooted, cleared cache, then finally did a factory reset to no avail.
The stock camera app doesn't give me anything on either camera.
I tried installing a 3rd party camera app and found that the front facing camera works, but I can't get the rear camera to do anything- it just stays black. Also, if I start with the front facing camera that is working, when I switch it to the rear camera, the app hangs with what was showing on the front facing camera.
Is there a chance that this is a software problem? Has anybody else had any issues like this? It is totally up to date, stock software. No root, no drops, cracks, nothing. Tablet could sell as brand new so I don't think it could be an issue from any sort of bending or impact.
Any help would be appreciated. I have searched all the normal forums and sites for camera issues but have found nothing. I also created a case with Samsung last week with absolutely no response.
Strange! Since you have never modified your device, first thing that comes to mind would be to clear data of camera app but since u already did a factory reset, try flashing stock firmware again. Could very well be a hardware problem, had a similar problem with my iphone. Take it to the samsung service centre if flashing doesn't work. Btw, has your camera worked well in the past? Gcb

Thank you. Yes, the camera worked perfectly fine before, just hardly ever used it.
