Hi,
I'm a fairly advanced Android user that mainly uses Cyanogenmod but I am having a problem with the stock ROM on my HTC One (M8).
I regularly download a podcast as an .mp3 file. When I click on the downloaded file I get offered to open it only in 'Gallery' or the 'Image Gallery' component of File Manager HD. Obviously neither of these apps can handle an audio file. The same happens when I try to open it using the stock 'Downloads' app.
If I try to open it from Either the stock file manager or from file manager HD I get the full range of apps that can handle .mp3 files.
I am guessing that the phone is recognising .mp3 as an image file extension instead of an audio file extension but cannot find any setting to change this.
It's so frustrating as the file doesn't have the correct details in the MP3 tag so it is impossible to find it in poweramp
Any ideas?

Anyone know where downloaded audiobook mp3 files get stored after there downloaded. I can play them from a file menu after it downloads but if I close it
I cant find it again.
I'm using root file explorer to connect to my Samba shared NAS (goflex home).
If I copy a .mkv file to my local sdcard, when I click the file (in file expert) it gives me the popup of what program I want to open the video file in. I click mxplayer, it plays just fine.
But if I connect via SMB to my NAS, when I click the same .mkv file, it won't let me pick a video player; instead it says it can't find a default program for this type of file, do I want it to search for one or no thanks. Search for one fails, and no thank just returns me to the File Expert screen. If I want to take the time (and SPACE) I can copy that same mkv file to my sdcard and play it.
So, my question is, how do I get file Expert to give me the video player prompt when connecting via SMB?
As a side not I've tried ES File Explorer in Lan Mode and always get Login Failure connecting to the goflex_home NAS (even though I've triple checked the login credentials and am using the same as in File Expoer).
I've also tried Avia to use DLNA and it sometime works but it doesn't show my Samba shares, it shows my DLNA shares and for some reason doesn't show all of them, including the files I want to play (and yes I shared them already with the Goflex Home config panel.
tl;dr -- how do I tell file expert to use mxplayer when browsing SMB shares, instead of the popup asking to find a program to handle the file?
Edit: Made some progress; tweaked the ES File Expert connection settings to connect to the root of my share and can connect and it gives me the choice of what file player to use -- though it seems to fail streaming. the same file I can play fine from sdcard chokes and is unplayable over streaming.
Alternately, does anyone have a better solution for this problem entirely?
Edit2: Sorry a but more info. When the mkv file is on my sdcard and I click it, I get the same error popup. If I hold down on the file fore afew seconds, I can click "Open As" then "Video" then pick my player. But in SMB exploring, holding down doesn't have an "Open as" option in the menu.
i second this question... same here with samba!!!
anybody knows?
It gives me option to select the player.
I am trying to open / save a mpeg 4 video file that I converted from an avi file that I compressed into a zip file. I email the file to myself through gmail. When I click on the file I get a message that says I can't open or save this file. The same file can be opened on my desktop. I have the same issue on my phone which is also an android. I am running kitkat on the Nexus & Jellybean on my phone. Maybe I'm missing something or do I need a specific app to open the file ?

Last I recall avi files dont compress much from a zip.
Plus you would have to deal with the zip file, lets say 300mb, then extract it, to another 300mb or so.
I think you would be better off just sending the avi file as is.
All you need to do is connect your nexus as a media device through the storage settings. (Make sure USB debugging is turned off in developer options). And then drag the uncompressed version over to your nexus from your computer. No need to email it if you have a computer. Make a folder called movies (don't have to just easier). And then download mxplayer from the play store of you haven't already.

Google is forbid us to save potential harmful attachment, including zip files.
So, If you insist using email, you need to open web browser and go to gmail website, login, and download the attached file.
Your file will be downloaded as downloadfile.bin.. You need to rename using file explorer to donwloadfile.zip, and then open & extract that file.
I'm using kitkat, and this method works for me.
Please note the attached screen shots. I use Verizon Visual Voice Mail - and I have used the option of permanently saving some of those voice mails (messages from my deceased Dad, etc) - which puts the recordings in a folder in my internal memory. The Samsung Media Player has found them and includes them with music to place in my phone. How do I tell the Samsung Media Player to ignore certain files or folders...?

Locate the folder where those files are saved. Using a FILE MANAGER program, make a new file and name it (without the quotes) ".nomedia". It does not have to contain anything. That file alone will prevent Android system from showing any files included in that folder in Gallery and Music. The name must start with the period.
If you cannot create a file with the period character, you'll need a different File Manager program. However that will fix your problem. Use this method to hide anything from the basic file system of the music and gallery apps.

I use the Files built-in file manager, and go to a folder containing some Opus files.
Clicking on a file, I'm receiving this error: "Can't open file"
What's interesting is that if I use another file manager, and open the Opus file with the built-in Music player, it works!
So, Opus files are actually supported out of the box, by the built-in audio player, and should be "registered" in the Files app.
Also, even though it doesn't recognize the file extension, why doesn't the Files app nevertheless let me choose an App to open (or try to open) the file?
