Hello,
I purchased HTC Desire 816 on eBay and unfortunately i received a Taiwan imported mobile.
When i try to update the phone it downloads the update and asks to install it now or later and when i click install now it reboots
and shows a green line for 20% of the full line and then i get a red exclamation mark. I have to restart it by holding power+volume up
buttons.
Can anyone help me out so that i can upgrade the software, i live in India.
I also did a factory reset from recovery mode but didn't resolve the issue and everything was in Chinese language after the reset.
Thanks.

@Known69 is your device currently rooted or do you have an unlocked bootloader? If so, root needs to be removed via the SuperSU app which will remove all root files and then going into the bootloader and typing
fastboot oem lock
Now you can try to update.
If your device is completely stock on the other hand it could be an issue with the update not downloading correctly. I will try to locate the RUU for your device so you can use it to restore to complete stock but could you provide me with the bootloader version of your device? Also you said you performed a factory reset and it didn't fix the issue, does that mean that you attempted to download the update once again and it failed at the same part in the process?

@Known69,
I too received a Taiwan imported model. But my seller was so kind that he helped me to update the ROM to latest HTC sense 6. when I received the device, it was running sense 5.5 and rooted. Due to this the new update wouldn't install. After I installed the ROM, root is now removed and I can update when HTC releases further updates.

No sir, it isn't rooted.
HBOOT-3.18.0.0000
Yes after the factory reset from the menu(Vol Down+Power) it completely changed the language to Chinese.
Then i tried it again and the same problem remained unsolved.

This file below is the Stock RUU only for the HTC Desire 816W / A5_DUG !
@Known69 Based off of you stating it was an Desire 816W via msg.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/h32sc97xl...8.3230.00D_F_release_389233_signed_2.zip?dl=1
Download it and make a copy of it.
Now rename both copies.
-Name one 0P9CIMG.zip
-Name one 0PC9DIAG.zip
Not sure which name your device uses but its one of these so just test both starting with the first one or put two copies one of each on your device.
You'll know because when you put this on the phone and go back into the bootloader it will ask you to use Volume Key to confirm the update. (Check to make sure it says A5_dug at the top)
Do this and let it update & complete.
Once done you can start up and update if its available but I'm pretty sure this is the latest full stock update for your device.
If its in Chinese and you want it to be a different language simply skip past everything and go into settings.
Go to this icon -> [[[A] (Should be the 7th icon from the bottom.)
Now select the first option.
Choose your language.
Done!
(P.S. Now you can root if you'd like!)

Just tried with your solution.
The steps which i followed are:
Downloaded and renamed to the first name which you gave(0P9CIMG.zip) and placed in SDcard.
Loaded bootloader-->FastBoot-->Checking SD... and got an error "No image or Wrong image".
Then renamed it to "0PC9DIAG.zip" and repeated the same procedure and still got the same error.
Verified it was A5_dug and in the fast line it was stating "LOCKED" in red color, don't know if it is normal for this procedure or need it Unlocked.

Do you see the green text that goes on and off within 3-4 seconds? In that green text when you first enter the bootloader it has the correct name that the file needs to be named.
Once it's on the SD/internal storage you don't have to click fastboot for it to flash. It will automatically scan and detect the moment after you see the green text in hboot/ first screen of bootloader.
As an alternative, you could also just flash the .zip image with
fastboot flash zip "zipname"
So for future example it will be
fastboot flash zip 0PC9IMG.zip
(No quotes)
Also you can type fastboot getvar all
It will show all your device information for you to double check everything is correct.

I tried but it's reading both the files.
In first line **DIAG..Wrong or no image, continues in second line too. In third line **IMG.zip...Wrong or no image, continues in 4th line too. Now comes back to main boot loader screen.
I didn't get your manual instruction.
Where should I write those commands and which file as by default both the files are selected as stated above.
Thanks.

Doesn't matter which file you use and you can use those commands via fastboot in the bootloader, not hboot. Basically when you go into the bootloader just press the power button once and you'll be in fastboot. Plug it into your PC and use the command I posted above with adb on your PC to flash either file.

Well when you enter the bootloader, the green text that comes up has the exact name that needs to be used for your device's RUU. I noticed that with the Virgin Mobile model it was 0P9CDIAG.zip
I also saw that some people stated their device says 0P9CIMG.zip
Your device zip name requirement could be different depending on the variant and you might have to reboot a few times to get the correct name written down correctly but it should be something along those lines provided above. Instead of IMG or DIAG it might say something else.
I also found the RUU for the Virgin Mobile model and I tested it but it only works when the device has the stock recovery and root permissions are removed.
When you remove all root from inside the SuperSU settings you HAVE to make sure to uninstall the app itself to ensure your device is completely stock. Use titanium backup if you have to.
After that I relocked my bootloader then the RUU flashed just by putting it on my SD card.
What I REALLY want to know is how your device has S-OFF.
Could you possibly make a CWM backup of your device and upload it? The boot.img would be really helpful with development of this device if S-OFF is achieved.

I bought it from eBay and seller don't want to disclose the information
But he told he imported from Taiwan. I am sure he has tweaked something, he's fraud.
Bro For solving this issue you need twrp installed on your device.
Then ask someone for your stock recovery image and a twrp backup.
After obtaining this flash the image and install the backup and then try the OTA Update and im sure you will now be able to update

You have updated your One X to a newer version via OTA, then you want to restore the software/ return stock but the latest RUU is not available. (boot to fastboot mode and type the following command "fastboot getvar version-main", This is the true version of your phone!)
You have some basic skills to flash things using "fastboot"
Those who want to back to stock and wait for the JB OTA.
Those with ICS hboot should works without any problem, someone had test it on JB hboot and works(updated in step 6, 7). but we need more testers.
The concept behind.
1. Fool the RUU to make it believe that it is flashing the latest ROM, but actually, we are flashing an older version.
2. after that, boot up the phone with older version of software, then OTA and update the phone to latest software.
How to do that?
0. backup all your stuff including those in SD, all your stuff in your phone will be lost. Then wipe all data (including SD) using your custom recovery. (important! Otherwise, you may not be able to receive OTA).
1. You have to download a "custom RUU" that can be found here.
http://db.tt/z8ajRTuH
Feel free to give a thanks to billd2439, he provide this working link to download the custom RUU.
Just go to #115 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35139501#post35139501 and give him a thanks
2. Download the ROM file, it should be in zip format. (You can also extract the rom file by running a RUU, just run the RUU, don't click anything and search the computer for "rom.zip") (In my case, I have an older version 1.29.708.15 rom extracted from RUU)
you may want to find RUU here http://www.htcruu.com
3. unzip the customRUU.zip to a folder, e.g. "customRUU"
4. unzip and extract "android-info.txt", "boot_signed.img" and "system.img" to a folder
5. open android-info.txt with "notepad" (notepad++ is highly recommended)
6. type the following command to get the information from your phone.
fastboot getvar all
you should pay attention to the following information
modelid:
cidnum:
mainver:
hbootpreupdate:
7. edit the value of "modelid", "cidnum", "mainver" and "hbootpreupdate" to match the information you get from step 6.
by doing this your will try to fool the RUU to belive that you are going to flash a newer version e.g (I have OTA my phone to 2.17.708.7, but now I want to fool the RUU with this old rom with a version number of 1.29.708.15, so I change the value to 2.17.708.7 )
Thanks ahmedaljaf for telling me to modify hbootpreupdate to makes JB downgrade works
8. save the file.
9. zip "android-info.txt", "boot_signed.img" and "system.img" and rename the zip to "rom.zip". (remember only zip the files, not the whole folder!)
10. place the "rom.zip" you just created to the "customRUU" folder
11. make sure your phone is still "unlock", remember to turn on USB Debugging, unplug the USB cable and reboot your phone, then goto fastboot mode and connect the USB cable.
(important, do the above to avoid error messages in RUU)
12. run the file "ARUWizard.exe" inside the folder "customRUU" (see the Attached Readme_Eng.pdf if the customRUU cannot display in correct language)
You can change the customRUU to English version by just delete or rename the language file "ARUWizard_Eng.lng" (Thanks ahmedaljaf for telling me this :good
13. follow the on screen instruction,
14. your phone should reboot and boot up with and old version of software.
15. restart the phone and go to fastboot mode.
16. extract the "recovery_signed.img" from your old "rom.zip" (not the rom.zip you create! ) and place it to some where.
17. flash the recovery by typing the following command "fastboot flash recovery recover_signed.img"
18. relock the phone
19. boot up the phone and try OTA
18. if the OTA download finish but fail to reboot to recovery update automatically, just manually boot to recovery and the update will be ok.
If you can return stock with this method, please reply and list the version here. And you can give me a "thanks" :good:
I wonder, if you put in the "rom.zip" the "hboot_0.95.0000.img" from an older RUU will you be able to downgrade the 1.28 hboot also?
There's NO way to downgrade hboot unless you have s-off.

They are somebody on chinese forum who use this method claimed he was able to do hboot downgrade through this method, but no one seem suceed so for.
Well, technically this method able to get you spoof ROM version because it check on your PC. While for hboot it validate the signature and version on the phone before upgrading itself. You can see the process if you push the firmware yourself via fastboot.

What if we hex edit the 0.95.0000 before we put it into the rom.zip to make it think that it's a newer version, will that brake the signature?

or you could just cook yourself a flashable zip from the rom.zip. Then fastboot flash rec and boot. Chances are ics wont boot on the newer hboots. Still the ota can be flashed as update.zip maybe.

It's OK, The RUU may not be able to select the right language to display, but It still works, since the RUU only use adb and fastboot to finish its process, and all these adb and fastboot are run in English...

No problem, I have found an English version.
I am finding that I get a Error 170 USB error... I believe this is because I have an unlocked bootloader.
So I re-locked the bootloader... and found myself unable to get past the bootloader.
I managed to run the RUU whilst phone was at the bootloader screen,
Replaced the temp rom.img with the created rom.img in your guide,
But it ended up failing with a Error 132 signature check.
I am not sure how to proceed.

Windows 8 is the problem, ul need to google the drivers for it, windows 8 is a nightmare with fastboot. If u can get ur hands on a laptop/pc with windows 7/vista etc it would be much easier.
same thing i installed the drivers on win 7 64 bit and it still says waiting for device ... what can be the problem and how to troubleshoot that ?
Make sure to install these drivers as well: http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
Try to do it with these steps:
You'll want to make sure your phone has USB debugging enabled: Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > make sure it's checked
Go to http://revolutionary.io/
Select your operating system (Windows or Linux only at this time)
The download should start right away and you'll be prompted to obtain a beta key (we'll cover this in a sec)
Extract the .zip file
Run the file "revolutionary"
A command prompt should appear and ask you for the beta key (the serial number should appear right next to this)
Go back to the Revolutionary site, select your OS, device, HBOOT version, and enter the serial number from the previous step
Generate the beta key
Copy the beta key over to the command prompt window, press enter, and wait patiently. It took a little bit for the phone to reboot into fastboot and proceeded to reboot fastboot 4 times. On the third time S-OFF was shown.
The command prompt window will then ask if you want to download and install ClockworkMod Recovery, type "y" for yes and press enter
Congratulations, you have an HTC EVO 3D with S-OFF and a custom recovery installed! However, you don't have root yet!
Reboot the phone. It may go through the hands free activation process, but just let it do it's thing.
Follow this link to download a .zip you'll need to obtain root
Transfer it to your SD card
Reboot the phone into recovery
Flash the zip from there, reboot, and you're all done!

With other devices you had to extract the ROM from the zip you downloaded from the Asus website. idk if it is the same case here.
I'm in the same Boat, and I'm finding to difficult to just flash a stock firmware., and be back at Stock
Rename it to MOFD_SDUPDATE.zip and put it on the root of your SD card get into recovery mode and let it do it's thing.
I'm trying to under standard the logic here, so any insight would help.
I've tried the MOFD_SDUPDATE.zip to the SD and Internal Mem with no luck.
First what's the differance between the JP WW CN updates on Asus's website. Different Hardware i assume.
Here's what I did to get updated
I downloaded the update from "OTA links for stock ROM by shakalaca" and just pushed it over using ADB, wiped cache, and factory reset.
Seeing that I stared with WW_2.17.40.12 as my factory ROM right from the asus website, and updated it with WW_2.18.40.12 OTA, I'm Good. or did i miss the updates from V2.17.40.17 CN. I'm assumeing the OTA just didn't roll out to me yet.

The firmware file should be like this, there should be a "user" in the filename.
UL-Z00A-WW-2.17.40.12-user.zip
Sometimes ASUS zipped the firmware and the filename when you download is like this:
UL-Z00A-WW-2.17.40.12.zip
the you need to unzip it first...
Did you check if your download is complete? Open with Winrar or something and see if it throws any extraction errors. Does the site give md5sums? If so check that too.
I tried to install an update from HTC ( Lollipop 5.0 ) but It wasnt possible because my phone was rooted. I came with the status 7 error. Then while reading some articles, I found that in order to get rid off that error and to install a new rom or update I must wipe all data from my phone, even the system part for a clean installation so I wiped it.
After that , my phone freezes on htc white logo.
I can access to fastboot with the Power button an volume

But there is Philz-tocuh in phone. Am I not going to mess things up if I install TWRP?
You're going to mess up more when you use One_M8_All-In-One_Kit_v2.0.
Just follow the guide if you want to fix your phone
or wait for someone else to help you if you insist to keep that outdated philz recovery
Good luck ... time to bed now .. good night
Oh Thanks. I didn't meant to be unpolite. It just I am very new on this. So I must first, get rid off the Philz bootloader and then install the TWRP, right?
Just install TWRP 2.8.1.0
It will replace Philz recovery, no need to do any other thing
No uninstall is needed
Ok. I got it. But, I can not figure it out how to run command to my phone because my pc does not recognize my phone. I have installed the htc drivers; however, as my phone just shows the htc logo I dont have any option to use MTP connection. Even, I tried to find and option for running commands in the fastboot screen , but there's any.
I assumed that the quick way to install TWRP in my phone will be copying the openrecovery-twrp-2.7.0.1-m8.img into a SD CARD (an external one) and then trying to install that file through my phone. Am I right?

He said bootloader fastboot mode .. you're on bootloader hboot mode.
Press power once when on this hboot screen .. can you see the fastboot usb highlighted in red when connect to PC ?
And for your info, Philz recovery is able to restore a TWRP backup.
You just need to put the TWRP backup in correct folder TWRP/BACKUPS/YourPhoneSerialNo./theTWRPbackupFolderHere

Sorry, but could you tell me what file do I need to use to restore TWRP?
The only way I can move files into my phone is by using an sdcard and copy/paste them with AROMA filemanager which comes with Philz
What about your PC device manager ? Do you have MyHTC under Android USB Devices ?
Check your cable, HTC USB Drivers - Download HTC Sync Manager - http://www.htc.com/us/support/software/htc-sync-manager.aspx

Use a card reader to read/write a MicroSD with a PC.
And talking about your software version no. 1.57.598.2, I found someone with your version but unfortunately he was reluctant to upload his backup due to big size of 1.4gb and he didn't have the data quota to upload it. And now I believe he remains at 1.57.598.2 instead of updating it to 4.32.598.1

Now I have installed TWRP on my phone , yeei
And I found a .zip file called OTA-something. It looks like this is the lollipop room which caused all this problem. I tried to installed and then I came up with this:
It seems I messed up my phone with the root.
On the other hand I read in some articles that if I update the firmware, I could use another room. Is that true?
You can't use TWRP to do OTA update. It needs 1.57.598.2 stock ROM and stock recovery installed.
Where did you find that OTA zip ? Can you upload that for me ? I want to see what's inside it then I can give a better suggestion what the firmware update can do for you.
Is your device has a OS installed now ? Is it really that you wiped the OS before ?
Try make a backup with TWRP and see how it goes whether it manage to make backup or not.

Okay, I tried flashing a custom ROM (InsertCoin A5_CHL & UL) and it installed properly, without any issues. But after rebooting it wouldn't connect to my Google Account. It just keeps checking and checking.. and after a good five minutes it states that vDM client ist shut down.
So, I followed this guide and tried going back to Stock RUU, but every time I enter the fastboot command
Code:
adb reboot fastboot
my phone just restarts, it won't enter fastboot mode.
I already tried to enter manually [Bootloader -> Fastboot] and the command
Code:
fastboot flash zip 0P9CIMG.zip
is working. It's sending the zip file to my phone, but every time it starts to write the actual file I get an error message.
Code:
C:\ADB>fastboot flash zip 0P9CIMG.zip
sending 'zip' (1033121 KB)...
OKAY [ 46.667s]
writing 'zip'...
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 122.015s
So, my question..
How can I get back to Stock RUU? Is there any other way to make it happen?
You will need to flash stock recovery, and relock bootloader, then just place 0P9CIMG.zip on SD card, and HBoot will pick it up and install on its own

Okay, if you have got hboot 3.19.xxx i dont know why it doesnt work..
If he/she's got the same specs I did, Kit Kat downgrade won't work. He/She needs the lollipop RUU to flash. Radio and OS need to be identical to the previous specs.
[Guide] How to flash 0P9CIMG on HTC Desire 816 [A5_UL]
Okay, since I was having a hard time flashing these files the first time, here's a guide how it worked for me.
First of all, if you need to flash the recovery too (eg. black screen in recovery, bootloop), make sure USB-Debugging is enabled on your device, all drivers are up-to-date (HTC Sync, Java and fastboot) and your bootloader is unlocked.
If it's still locked/relocked visit the HTC Developer Center and follow the guide to unlock your bootloader.
- Create a folder 'ADB' in disc drive C and copy all files into this folder, this way you can just copy/paste the commands.
My ADB fastboot folder (just extract it to C:\ and you're good to go)
- Connect your device and PC using usb data cable
Step 1
Flashing recovery (before relocking your bootloader)
- Download recovery.img
- Save it to C:\ADB folder
- Navigate to ADB folder and click on any free space while holding the shift Key
- Choose 'Open command window' here
- Once cmd is started use this command
Code:
fastboot devices
and check if your device is listed, then type
Code:
adb reboot fastboot
to reboot your device. It should start in fastboot mode. If it's not, shut down your phone and restart using power + volume down buttons, pressed at the same time. Once Hboot starts just navigate (using volume up or volume down buttons on your device) to Fastboot and press the power button. Make sure FASTBOOT USB is display under your specs.
- Enter
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
into the cmd window and press enter to flash your recovery.
- If it's successful go to step 2, if it's not try again.
Step 2
Relock Bootloader using Fastboot:
Now you need to relock the bootloader, otherwise the Stock RUU can't be installed.
- Copy command to the cmd window
Code:
fastboot oem lock
- Press enter
Your device should now be relocked.

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",

}
Step 3.a
Flashing Stock RUU using fastboot commands
- Download 0P9CIMG.zip
- Place it in ADB folder
- now type the following command in the cmd window
Code:
fastboot flash zip 0P9CIMG.zip
- Wait for the flashing process to finish.
If that doesn't work try to install the RUU using Hboot.
Step 3.b
Flashing Stock RUU using HBOOT
- Save 0P9CIMG.zip to the root folder of an sd-card (min. 2GB )
- Put sd-card into your device
- Start the device by pushing Power + Vol Down at the same time
- At this point, your device should pick the 0P9CIMG.zip you downloaded up and install it as an update.
- Wait till the flashing process is finished. (Might take some time )
Now, you're back to Stock Android Lollipop 5.0.2
If this fails and you're still unable to get back to Stock Android, follow the next guide:
Restore system using clean twrp Android 5.0.1 nandroid backup
Make sure your device battery is charged upto 80%.
Make sure your bootloader is unlocked and usb debugging is activated
- Download twrp for your device (HTC Desire 816 a5 )
- Follow the guide Fastboot Install Method (No Root Required) to flash custom recovery
- Download TWRP Nandroid backup
- Boot to bootloader (volume down + power), use volume buttons to navigate to Fastboot and then select recovery
- Once twrp is running, tab the Wipe button, followed by Advanced Wipe
- Select Dalvik Cache, System, Cache and Internal Storage
- Swipe to confirm, wait till it's finished
- Unzip A5_UL TWRP Nandroid 2016-01-25--03-37-20 UNROOTED.zip file to desktop
!!! IMPORTANT !!!
You will need to insert your device ID into the folder structure otherwise the folder won't be listed.
To get your device ID, start cmd in your adb folder and enter adb devices. The number/letter combination is your device id. (eg. SH45...)
Browse through the TWRP folder until you get to fastboot_getvar (bootloader) serialno and replace the text with your serialno.
- Move TWRP folder to sd-card
- Connect device to pc
- Insert sd-card into device
- Tab Restore button
- Choose nandroid backup folder
- Swipe on screen to confirm restore
There’s no going back once you do this. All your data will be lost, so make sure you've got your own data backup and placed it somewhere safe!
After this you will have a functional factory reset device.

I can´t downgrade then. Thanks anyway
The only way (as far as I know) to downgrade to kit kat is to turn your device s-off. But that's the riskiest procedure, since you'll unable all security options. If you'll use a wrong RUU, flashing gets aborted or another error pops up, the device WILL be hard-bricked.
Updated guide.
TWRP nandroid backup in progress.
