I'm getting a used n7 so I've been reading up on it.I've a few ? about unlock/root/recovery.I'm currently using a S2 and I'm pretty good at flashing and fixing issues.I'm used to using cwm recovery. With the S2 custom recovery was usually in the kernel.Once I got custom recovery I could do whatever I needed.
The terminology on the n7 is a little different then the s series. So I'm trying to lean that. The unlock/root sequence looks straightforward. The recovery is where I'm still a little uneasy with.I haven't used adb before.Would like to stay with cwm for now.Given that, can recovery be gotten by using Odin?I haven't seen any links for recovery .tar files.
Are there any threads comparing setups between Samsung S series and nexus tablets?Or other threads with pertinent info?Any help is appreciated.Thnx in advance.

Forget Odin. Say hello to fastboot and adb. Please don't use a toolkit until you have a basic understanding of how both work. Once you get the drivers installed and the SDK up and running, there's only a few commands to learn.
There's no reason to feel uneasy nor overwhelmed, just follow the guides in the General sub-forum step for step and you'll be fine. If you can unlock and root a Samsung, you can unlock and root a Nexus with ease. Seriously, you'd have to try to brick a Nexus to actually brick it.

Odin is only for Samsung devices. Use the guides to get familiar with adb and fastboot. Ask here for help?

Complete noob here,
just upgraded to a s3 from my inspire 4g.
I want to root my phone and I was looking at this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 but I couldn't find any information on i747-ucalh9. I did search the thread and someone had posted a solution but it wasn't very clear(to me anyways, Im kinda slow to this). I saw this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1902178 but got confused by the talk of different bootloaders. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I just need help getting it rooted and installing clockwork recovery. I'm familiar enough with installing custom roms on my inspire but any help is appreciated.

Just use the galaxy S3 toolkit
If you feel uncorfortable with ADB commands, then I would recomment you use the toolkit here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665
If you need to reset your counter you can always use triangle away to get back to normal.
Welcome to S3
The toolkit should work, but some have reported problems. This post describes another way (essentially the same way the toolkit does it but with an additional step to make sure the stock recovery doesn't automatically get restored on boot):

As yet I've been using my Note 8.0 Wifi (N5110?) rooted but with stock firmware. However, I'd quite like to get at least a custom recovery on there so I can try some different ROMs. But first I have some questions -- sorry if they're basic but I learnt about flashing with my Nexus 4 and things don't seem nearly as simple with non Google devices...
I am aware that there's a Note 8 toolkit, but it's Windows only, as in Odin by the looks of it. I read about another flashing tool called Heimdall with Linux support. Has anyone used Heimdall with their Note 8 WiFi successfully? I'm cautious of jumping into this and destroying my expensive new tablet, so I'd really appreciate any advice.
EDIT: Flashed a recovery in download mode using heimdall without issues.

you could try framaroot (Android app available from thread here on xda), depending on your ROM version it could work (or not) - no risk, nothing to lose, and if it works - it's the fastest way of getting root

Thanks, I'd already used Framaroot and was on a stock rooted ROM. I wanted custom recovery to install a custom ROM. However, I went ahead with this using Heimdall and didn't break anything, so it's all good
EDIT: Is there some way I can now mark this thread as solved?

Done. Thanks.
So my n7 has been down for the past 2 months cause of poor Asus service on an RMA. Took me sending the unit in 3 times before they gave me a new device.
I feel so out of the loop and overwhelmed
Anyways, I was unlocked manually, rooted with wugs tool and twrp recovery flashed with wugs tool. Is this still all possible to do on kit Kat, the latest update?
What's the best ROM and or kernel being run out there in you guys opinions. This is the biggest thing that's overwhelming since development has taken off in the last 2 months IMO.
Thanks for any help and tips, I appreciate it guys/girls!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Yeah you can still do that..
If you unlocked manually you know how to use fastboot so just flash twrp or cwm with that. No need for a toolkit.
Rom/kernels up to you man. Depends what you want, see what they offer, there is no best. I like CM myself.
Alright thanks. Yeah, I'm familiar with fastboot. I'll just do that. How do I root though if I fastboot install twrp?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Right now I am running SinlessRom with ElementalX kernel and the ROM is liquid smooth, scored 28205 in anTuTu (overclocked). Have tried BS Harmony CM based but I just don't like the look of it and CM ROMs used to be my fav.
Where do I find the proper super su zip to root after fastboot flashing twrp?

With all due respect, sure we could walk you through the process but really, do yourself a favor and do some reading to learn all that is required. Familiarize yourself with everything first, in the end you'll be thankful you did. After all...learning is part of the fun. Lots of folks use a toolkit like wugfresh's to unlock, root, install recoveries, etc.
Yeah, I know the steps, just not sure if I'm looking in the right spot. Guess I'll read more in that thread to find out if it's the right one......

I've done it before, it just been awhile and it wasn't on kit Kat so all my files I have now are outdated I'm sure.

Hiya guys, first time poster long time follower here .___.
I know this might or might not be a common "noob" like question
for most of you but I wanted to know if anyone knows where and how
I could get a custom recovery for a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE model?
I previously owned, rooted, and successfully flashed CWM Recovery on the
previous none-LTE Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999)...but while jumping
from one Rom to another I accidentally tried flashing an International
version of a rom and basically hard bricked that one T-T
Two weeks later I got the "second generation" of the S3 with LTE capabilities
you could say. But after successfully rooting it after months of doubt thinking I'd
fudge it up again, I came to a brick wall, CWM, Philz, and other major recovery teams
haven't made a version of their app compatible with this newer model of the S3
Maybe I've been away from the rooting and rom forums too long or I'm
a bit too ignorant, but could anyone tell me if it's possible to get a recovery
for my phone?
Use the same d2tmo recoveries as before.
So will it be alright to use Rom Manager to try and install the d2tmo recovery using the app or must it be done manually using the PC version of ODIN?
Mobile Odin doesn't recognize this device either so no mobile flashing either...

I posted the info Chainfire needed to add support for the T999L soon after its release. Since all other T999 stuff works im pretty sure all hed have to do is allow it to use the same flash kernel. Kinda surprised he never added it.
You can try with an app, but it may block the install. If so youll have to flash in odin.
From what I've read on the ratings/posts on his Google Play Apps it appears Chainfire has been laying low lately. I don't know how true this might be or to what extent but I doubt I'll be getting legitimate support for this phone model any time soon.
As for trying to install the d2tmo recovery I'll have to download the package from the site and try using Flashify or another mobile flash app for now since I don't have my laptop on hand.
Thanks for your quick and very helpful replies DocHoliday77!
I'll post if it works for any other who has the same doubts, if not, bricked I guess lol
By the way, is your username a Generator Rex reference?

You do have another option. Download the recovery.img file, or extract it from a zip file. Open Terminal Emulator and enter this:
Code:
su
dd if=/path/to/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
Thats it! Just be careful you make no mistakes typing or it could brick your device!
Don't know if others ran into this but TWRP won't mount anything for me on the T999l - I ended up needing to resort to using CWM and clockwork works fine.
Youre not the only one. I think i know how to fix it, but i just havent had time. Just stick with what is working for now.
I apologize for the late reply.
I was able to flash the CWM Recovery using ROM Manager and selecting the d2tmo model. Heck, I was even able to install CM 11 (d2lte) thanks to that But that's off the topic.
Thanks for your help DocHoliday77!

I dont want to go the custom recovery root just plain basic stock android thank you
Towelroot Google it. Works just fine if root is all you want.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
You can boot twrp instead of flashing it then flash the su zip. This won't overwrite the stock recovery. run fastboot boot twrp-name.img
If you don't want a custom recovery, you can re-flash stock recovery. The way to root a Nexus device is simple, you use fastboot, flash twrp, flash superu. Yes, it requires wiping data.
Using exploits, especially sketchy ones, is a bad idea.
Ha. So I'm assuming the sketchy remark was aimed at my answer. Look man you can do whichever you'd like according to your skills and level of comfort. The fact is this, any of the above mentioned routes would work. That being said, the "sketchy" route I suggested is a well documented working exploit. And by far the simplest of all you want is root. But the wugfresh toolkit is just as easy if you have access to a PC. It will do all of the above and more. Good luck.

^Why **** with that bull****. Just flash or boot twrp and flash the su.zip
Boot a custom recovery, flash su.zip, boot into system. This way you have root but retain the stock recovery.
I used that w something toolkit. Worked like a champ on both my 5.0.2 N7's, kept the stock recovery, simply attained root access.
Your welcome. Glad I could help

I'm glad it worked for you but in the future, you should avoid using toolkits like the plague. I can't tell you how many "such and such toolkit bricked my phone!" threads I've seen over the years. People try and take the "easy route" and then have no clue how to fix their phones/tablets when a problem occurs. I recommend to every person that wants to root their devices that they familiarize themselves with ADB and fastboot, it's actually much easier than it seems, and the knowledge is invaluable. Like people mentioned, you should have booted a custom recovery and flashed SU, it's just as simple as using a toolkit, and again, the knowledge and experience would have served you well.
