Note 4 and ART - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Saw some people were wondering if it was ART capable out of the box. Answer is yes.

I switched last night, but then went to bed shortly after.. phone was ok when I woke up.. I planned on playing with it a bit with it today to see how it acts. but...
first bootup was SLOOOWWW it just sat there for a good couple min. I thought it had locked up but I decided to just wait it out. After that it took about 5 to 8 min extra to "optimize apps" like 355 of them.. next boot also went through the process of "optimize apps" but that took considerably shorter amount of time as it was only 10 apps. a third reboot and the phone wants to optimize 10 more apps.. A fourth reboot and it wanted to optimize 10 more apps.. so I switched back to dalvik after that..
the whole process ate like 25% of my battery as well, from a full charge after 4 reboots I had 74% left

I switched to ART for a few hours yesterday. After the initial pre-compile stage, everything was smooth, but after a couple of hours, phone started lagging really bad, and some apps (like Facebook) just plain won't open, even after "clear data/clear cache". Also, it seemed like the phone was running warmer. I switched back to Dalvik, and everything went back to normal.

I noticed this as well.. but I thought it might have been from all the app optimizing that was done during my reboots. So I neglected to mention it

I've been running ART with zero issues.

Worked for me, Sorta
I have it on ART now, and it is working OK. Google hangouts, the phone app, and the settings app are SLOW! Everything else is going okay. Here are the apps I have tried so far that work:
Nova launcher
google now
remember the milk
play store
smart remote
camera
waze
pandora
Battery life has been decent though. (Certainly better than yesterday, out within 6 hours after full charge)

i switch to ART, stocked apps including paypal worked well, but other my other banking and shopping apps keep crashing so I switch back and will try later

With all these reported issues, why continue to try?

Dumb question but what is art?

I'm getting crashes for the Amazon app unfortunately, after switching to ART

The point is to get a performance enhancement by switching to ART. If it cause this many issues then it's not worth it. I'll wait until Lollipop to enjoy the benefits that should come.

I'm running art with 0 problems here all my apps open everything works smoothly

upgrading android at boot start everytime I change battery or reboot when I switched to art, its annoying

Same here, upgrading android every time I reboot, also have had a few apps crash but none really important.

Really depends on everybody, how many apps you have installed, how big they are, and son on.
But the first boot will take a while sometimes up to 10 minutes if you really have that many apps!
But from owning a few Android devices (21 so far) , ART has had negative performance issues on some of my capable phones....and positive on others.

ART- Android Run Time is Google's new cache system they will no longer use Dalvik with the release of L, it's supposed to cache larger parts of the app in memory (sorta like preloading apps) so apps open and run faster. The initial use of ART will be a bit slow as apps will need to prebuild but the outcome is supposed to be a faster app launching and loading process and faster system. I personally wouldn't use it until the Note is updated to L because it'll be unstable on KitKat

Go to developer options and it'll be one of the first few options. Select runtime and then choose ART. Honestly I wouldn't bother until Android L

Android system draining battery

The android system is draining my battery pretty badly. It's taking about 25 percent of my battery. I have my Gsiff_daemon deleted, but it's still taking quite a lot of my battery. My phone would go down 1 percent every 5 mins in sleep mode. Is this normal and how can I decrease the battery usage of android system? I'm on 4.0.4 stock rooted.

When you have battery issues you need to post a battery info screenshot. Showing your battery use and what is using it. It will help Diagnose the issue.
IMO (I am not pro) I would think being on stock you should have no problem although you are rooted so I think. Its either a hardware issue or something you did. How did you root your phone? if you followed a Tutorial what tutorial did you use?
What i would do is first charge the phone to 100% then let it drain to around 5% and post a screenshot of your battery usage, I would also post a History Screenshot too.
After you have done that you can patiently wait as i bet someone more knowledgeable than I will post something about your issue.
Although Since your rooted you could Install a New Kernel that is made for battery life. That should help if your ROM is not the suspect (I think it could be) Next I would also flash a good stock based rom (that is if you like and want stock based). Pimp My Rom also Has some Battery Saving Tweeks in it if you wish to not flash a ROM try PMR to tweak your system.
I didn't really cared about my battery life before since I always have extra carried with me at all times. But my power is out because of hurricane sandy and I have no idea when will the power be back up. Now every percent battery counts since I won't be able to charge. I'll try to put screen shots up but I only have my phone because my laptop battery died already.

Go into your battery screen and tap on Android System and then scroll down. it will show you all the processes that are associated with that particular facet of the ROM/Battery. In there, you can see what is being used by Android System and hopefully something will spark your eye. Do you have an Alarm/Clock setting, Calendar, media scanning,...? You can force close the offender.
Also you can go into Developer Options and tick Show CPU and it will show an overlay on your homescreen that will show real-time CPU usage.
I turned on cpu usage in the devekoper options and I see that x.xx/x.xx/x.xx (x are numbers I can't track them down because they're constantly changing) are always on the top and takes up quite a lot of cpu. Is that something I need to worry about?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
I would reboot and once it is back up and running, go to Settings>Apps>Running and FC everything that you are not using. Then switched to Cached and FC everything that populated over from running and anything else that you don't need.
When I say need, I understand that you are in the danger zone and w/o power. You don't need Facebook, MediaHub, Music/Video,...Not that those are specific to you, but if you only have one battery left with no power in the future, then I suggest going bare bones for the time beaing.
***************
Sidenote: I was just reading about some things and see that some people in NYC are using Hotels/Gas Stations/ Stores that still have power to charge up the cell phones. Not sure where you are but might be worth looking into. How many times have you gone into that corner store? Do they recognize you? Maybe they could share some power. See where I am going with this?
Be safe
I had "Android System" eating my battery too. I'm stock/rooted. I had Cerberus installed briefly, uninstalled - about when my phone started being hot (bottom third) when sleeping in my pocket. Drove me nuts - sorry, but I simply cant tolerate an IDLE phone getting hot in my pocket! Anyway, I rebooted the phone, turned it off, pulled the battery, installed Better Battery Stats - eventually the phone stopped having massive drainage from "Android System" and now it's not hot anymore whether it's on browsing the web or idle.
I guess there are two points to my post 1) the way I could tell my problem was fixed was the phone stopped getting hot -and- 2) the problem hasn't come back for me after a simple fix of multiple-power cycles. I've seen mixed results with a fair number of people saying that rebooting their phone fixed there problem and about an equal number saying the problem either wasn't fixed by rebooting or it came back again later.
If it happened to me again I would open a Terminal and run the "top" command and just keep watching it until I figured out what was eating up my battery (CPU time).
EDIT: Oh - and to confuse things more I used Titanium Backup (pro) to freeze/un-install some of the T-mobile bloatware in addition to setting email to sync slightly less often...
I have my power back on and factory reset my phone. I see android system had already taken 30% of my battery after about an hour of use. There is close to nothing on my phone since it just got factory reset. I don't even know what to do anymore, I really don't want this "android system" sucking so much of my battery.
Id suggest flashing the full stock fw via Odin. Possibly something got corrupted during an update maybe.
I saw uou used Show cpu usage earlier. Don't worry bout the numbers, but watch for the processes that seem to stay at the top and let us know which they are.
You can get the fw from my thread here.

The cpu usage is very high I think it constantly stays at 1.2+ 2+ 4+. It can go as high as 9. I'll try flashing stock rom again and see how that goes later today.

The only thing below the cpu usage is the system_server. Android system is only hogging 11% of my battery today. I don't know why was it at 30% yesterday but it seems normal now.

Just setting this up in my note to see if it does what it claims
I'm not a fan of battery saver apps at all so I'm skeptical right off the bat
but this is from xiam... and it's free... and it has some interesting stuff packed In there so what the heck
it takes 4 days of "learning mode" before it starts battery savings based on your usage
anybody made it thru the 4 days yet?
I see people in the comments going from 10 hours to 18 hours battery life with moderate use but that doesn't make sense to me... This app looks like it's constructed to save battery when the phone is not in use and I don't really have that problem... i lay my phone down at night with 97% and I wake up in the morning with 96%.... how you gonna gimme 30% increase on 1% drain?
But I'm still curious anyway...
Thanks for giving it a test run for the rest of us. Looking forward to your results. I'm using Greenify now so a comparison would be cool.
Also if the guru works with system apps as well.
If something is too good to be true... It usually is?

So I've had it in my Note for 2 days now... not having any problems with lag or anything like that... still showing 1day 19hrs until the battery savings kick in based on learning mode... (funny reading the comments in the play store "had this running for 3 days and it doesn't help at all!!! Uninstalled!!!"... we'll duhhhh... it never made it out of learning mode ya goofballs)
But anyways... i noticed my battery actually draining a bit quicker during this learning phase ... whatever... I'm just being patient and following the instructions and we'll see in a couple days how this plays out.
I installed also and am awaiting to see how it goes. I will post findings later also..

Okay I have passed the 4 day mark after installing this it does help a lil not much If you look in the apps form the aplication it only stops services on what you use the most so if yo inly open a few apps during the learning process its not going to do much but if you open every app you have constantly you will get a much better chance of the app stoping other services you may or may not need

Didn't do anything for me at all... but there's probly a good reason why...
i run my Note bare bones as it is... Beans ROM heavily Debloated... no sync apps running... no facebook/no twitter/no magazine etc... no location services running unless i need them for something... only thing that starts and syncs data would be an email app and Gmail ... this snapdragon app basically tries to save you battery whenever you are not using the phone but i already have mine set up to do that all the time anyway so it didn't help at all... basically just another app running all the damn time.
I would think this app is for the casual user who doesn't take command of their device in the first place (or doesn't know how) or has a bazillion things always running and can't be bothered always trying to control them all. Nothing to see here for the power user who's always on their device or users like me who stripped it all down to beast mode.

I had the very same issue. I discovered my fingerprint scanner didn't work and no one could hear me during phone calls. I also had what i thought was high battery usage (probably a bad fingerprint module). I exchanged mine for a new one, and that one works perfectly. Hope this helps.
I had that problem when I went to art runtime but switched back to dalvik and perfectly fine. Even on art my phone would turn on the screen for odd reasons and find myself calling someone but not even an issue on dalvik.

yea sorry to tell you but you def got a defective device... this phone is the smoothest and fastest device I have ever experienced... go get a new one before it is too late!
Everything has been pretty smooth for me. Only thing is the delay when using the recent apps button.
Wipe first then post..
Wipe first and then post. Being a new phone I really didn't think a wipe would help. After resetting it appears to work correctly the typing lag is gone and scrolling seems to transition fluidly. I'll play the rest of the day and see if it reverts or stays like this.
So to the developers. . What on a fresh , new phone would cause it to act laggy ? And how would a data reset correct it? We are not flashing roms, and the os is untouched during a factory reset.. it's not like I Odined the system over to replace a corrupt system file. Any thoughts ?
Mine works fine. Disabled a bunch of apps and slapped apex launcher on it. So far I'm happy just wishing for root still.

Is it laggy with battery saving mode on or even with normal mode?? I found my laggy and froze with battery saving mode on. I have tried to factory reset and do a rom recovery, disabled all the bloat but no help. so I request for a new one. If suggest if anything is not normal, just get a new one while you're under 14 days warranty period.

Yep, mine has froze and reboot issue, I called VZ and they you should get it in 2 days. They will put the charge on your account (no need for credit card), once received the new device, just ship back the old one and they will credit back 312$ to your account. You must call VZ technical support, not customer service. Tech support has the power to do anything with your phone. Good luck!
The only time I've come across stuttering/lag is playing Sky Force 2014. This game will just not play smoothly on the Note 4. It's very fluid on the S5 however. Maybe it's the upgrade in resolution. I don't know.
Getting ridiculous lag in Hangouts and there is a bit of delay on the recent apps.
I chalk it up to Hangouts being crappy and Samsung being lazy with the recent apps impelentation.. everything else is butter.
Well here is the weird part about mine, it was lag free until i tried flashing a rom. N910w8 model. Then went to tri finger scanner and the app dont launch i get an error, just my luck

Ever since I rooted my note 4 all it does is lag. My note 3 runs way smoother! I'm not sure why this phone lags all I did was install a couple of xposed modules and that's it.

Not sure what you mean by syncing s-health, just make sure you clear data, and start fresh. I did this fix 4 days ago, and my steps are there for the past 4 days. Everything is still running smooth still also.

I did not know that back up/restore existed, so I can not answer that one. Does everything else work on s-health? Can you just start fresh and not use your back up, or is s-health not working at all?

I am not comfortable messing with those files, so I checked and re-checked for that reason. Also, make sure you follow the order when clearing data, and and re-installing xposed. You only have to uninstall the installer framework, not the app completely, and wanam xposed does not get touched. Hope it helps!
OK I fixed my issue. I went to the s health app. I went to the main screen from the left side pull out menu. Then selected my name, then clicked on my Samsung account at the bottom and selected erase data and reset. Hopefully this will help someone else.
For people with lag after xposed, a person at s4gru said that they installed wanam and checked the circle battery checkbox and it lagged badly. He unchecked that and the lag went away even with xposed and wanam installed. I have not rooted my phone yet to see about lag but will eventually.

yeah, that would be me.
In my case, after rooting the Note 4 and installing my root apps everything was fine until I installed Wanam and checked on the circle battery setting to on. Then it lagged, especially when I click on the drawer icon. It would slowly go up like a snail. After unchecking the circle battery and re-installing Wanam, the lag stopped and its as speedy as day one. Now why the circle battery would make my Note lag when choosing the app drawer is a mystery.

I will have to try this! And my only guess is the different image files the note 4 uses and wanam is probably trying to change it to the circle battery but it just keeps conflicting together.
I have circle battery enabled through Wanam and I don't lag.
What I can't stand is the typing lag. I notice it mostly in Google hangouts and in some other apps. I've tried different keyboards and still the lag is present. I've notice this on my Note 3 as well only when I'm on a touch wiz rom. Anyone know how tor get rid of this typing log?
@DarkManX4lf Same thing here, only lag im getting is when using hangouts. Other then that no lag to be found what so ever.
I just tried hangouts and no lag.
ok, so I went back into Wanam and checked on battery circle and rebooted to see if I can reproduce the previous lag issue I had.
Result: no lag.
This is really odd.

Mystery App

Hey
Anyone know what the running mystery app is with no name at the bottom? Usually 2 of these draining my battery and not sure what they are.

Thanks for the reply but will have to say that going to the time and effort of taking a screenshot and creating a thread to ask about this means I'm not lazy...Plus this is a forum isn't it....where people can discuss things and ask for help...That's what I did.
Plus i'm not talking about the pujie watch face at the very bottom, I'm referring too the android icon with no name...how can I google something which has no name!?
Sorry mate. Had no intension to offence you at all......

Classic XDA snobbism. I've also wondered about those unnamed apps.

Hey!
You could try a 3rd party Wear battery stats app, like this, to see if it can throw more light on it for you.
If that doesn't help, to troubleshoot, you could factory reset your watch (in settings), then reconnect/pair it to back your phone, but don't resync your apps just yet at this point.
When the watch and phone are successfully paired, recheck your battery stats after a few minutes and see if the mystery app returns in the list. If it does show up again, you know it's a stock app, and there's probably nothing to worry about. If it doesn't reappear, and only shows up when you resync your apps to the watch, you then know it's something you've installed yourself.
If it bothers you that much, you could perform another factory reset and install your apps back onto the device one by one, checking your battery stats after a few minutes along the way to see which one is the culprit.
Incidentally, I don't have the no-name app on my SW3 running 5.0.2 with the latest Wear app, and honestly I don't think it's good practice by a developer to leave an app in that state purposely, so I'd be wary of it to be honest - looks kinda dodgy!
Best of luck!

Awesome! Thanks for all of your suggestions I am just in the process of using the app you suggested to track down what application that running service belongs too. It's not bothering me massively, just seems a little suspicious as you say.
What lead me to look there in the first place was that my battery is only lasting me around about 3/4 of a day! Which is a hell of a lot less than all the reviews have stated i should be getting out of it.
I may well try a factory reset tbh...just to see 1. if that service goes away using your methods for checking 2. to see if my battery improves. Will report back when I know more anyway, hopefully be able to help others out who have the same issue.
I did actually have 2 apps with the same lack of name at one point...very odd!
Edit: Damn just seen that the app you suggested required xposed on my phone which I don't have at present due to running lollipop and not wanting to use the alpha

Wear Battery Stats doesn't require Xposed! I'm using it on my phone and I've never installed or used Xposed before.

Oh okay, my bad! . It just wasn't showing any info and it said that I must be rooted and have xPosed installed. I went for the full reset and app re-sync option anyway as I want to try and fix the bad battery life...will see if that also resolves the mystery app issue!
Odd! I now have a black one too..
I had fast battery drain because of an animated face...it showed usage 2 percent but in reality was way way more... Just set a standard face and test it for a day

I think that's the case yanno! I had an animated face set and the battery was draining really really quickly! I was charging it twice a day, I set a different watch face (still slightly animated) but the battery went for a whole day then and still had 30% left!!
