Hey @ all,
i will recive a german fire TV with the new firmware which can not be rooted in the next days.
I want to mod my hosts file to get my network devices easier and to get access to my xbmc database which is stored on my synology NAS.
The database uses names instant of IP addresses, that's because I need access to the hosts file.
I want to bind the IP 192.168.178.xx to the name "FileServer".
Can I pull and push the hosts file without root? Or does a symlink work on the fire TV? Or is there another way to get this without search n' replace all entries in my database to get everything with the IP addresses?
Thx for any help with this problem.
Regards from Berlin
Stephan

Ok, I have a FreeNAS server setup at home and I have SSH enabled. Anyways, i'm fine and succeded in connection via SSH connectbot and having portforward of 139 to a local of 8888
This works FINE with ES file manager or even Astro file manager, I can browse my FreeNas server. Problems are though:
1. Why can't I actively view images or videos(not that I want to so much through 3G) when I click on the image, and it won't load up? This happens the same way if I do a local browsing via SMB on astro file manager on my LAN at home.
What works: When I do a CIFS mount using that app someone made here, the CIFS manager or whatever, I can stream videos, images whatever fine.
Now if I can get that to work via the ssh tunnel. I tried creating a CIFS via the ssh tunnel but somehow it doesn't work and I get error like "segmentation fault" with mount.
Anyone have any idea? I can transfer files file but I want to have option to quickly view pictures on my server rather than copy the paste then open up.
Ok update, I can do a mount CIFS manually in terminal, but the CIFS module app still doesn't work...
I guess SMB shares won't allow streaming either way?
When you use a file manager to browse files on your NAS box over SSH (or FTP), the remote files are not mapped to a local path. As a consequence, you can only browse these files with applications able to use CIFS, SSH or FTP connections. Your gallery apps and media players can't access these files directly because, unlike EStrong of ASTRO, they have no CIFS/SSH/FTP client built in.
When you mount a CIFS share on your NAS box using CifsManager, all the files within that share will be mapped to a "local" file. The Android system will know that when you acces /mnt/cifs/MyShare/peanut.png, it is in fact the file peanut.png on your network share. The gallery or media player apps access a local file and aren't aware of the fact that the Android system actually accesses a file on your NAS box instead.
I have no idea why you can't mount a cifs share over your SSH port forwarding.
A segmentation fault has to do with memory access.. and that doesn't make any sense. It might be caused by the fact that port 137-139 are NETBIOS ports. Win2K and higher use 445 for CIFS instead. You might want to try forwarding port 137 (TCP/UDP) and 138 (UDP) too.. or forwarding port 445 (TCP/UDP) instead. Then again.. it might be something else entirely.
If this doesn't work, maybe you can try with some type of VPN instead of SSH port forwarding?
Actually figured it out.. hope this post will help others with similar issues.
Problem is the mount on android is a bit finicky when apply options, it's a certain order or some sort. I got it working by using the '-o' by putting port=xxxx,ip=xx.xx.xx.xx
It was segmenting for who knows what when I put ip,port. I guess order matters on android vs the linux mount command. Strange indeed
Works now, though my vids are wrong res when streaming, who knows why but not that I care too much lol.
Works okay now, but pretty much 2 step process to access files at home which is a pain. I guess I can buy the andftp client to do a quick file transfer access.
Hello, i was wondering how to transfer files on Two android devices, via WIFI tether example two devices have Wi-Fi On and how they can transfer files between send/receive?
Is there any application like this or something..?
thanks in advance
Try Bump or Hoccer, they both send the files via internet. If you want a local solution, set up ftp on one and access it from the other with any capable file manger (i.e. ES File Explorer).
ive got an AFTV thats been rooted and loaded with xbmc , i want to transfer addons from my pc to the FTV , i have tried using abdfire but when i try to push the file i get message saying "kodi not installed " , i have heard that i can share the file to the FTV , but when i go to "add from zip" in the FTV and then "user HP" (which i think is my pc) , this seems empty . Can someone please explain how to fix adbfire problem and also how i can share from pc to FTV ? im on windows 7 ( do i need to change any settings in the router ?) . thanks .
Are you trying to install Kodi addons from your PC to AFTV? Would it not be easier just to install them again from the repos from within Kodi (on AFTV)? Or install ES file explorer on your AFTV then link it to a dropbox account and copy the files to dropbox using your PC then access on your AFTV.
Hi all,
Running kodi/Helix 14.0 sideloaded on my non-rooted fireTV.... With no other extras or addons apart from my network attached HD.
Using IkonoTV as my launcher.
all updates blocked via opendns.
I just wanted to know if it was possible to change the background wallpaper on the main screen...
I know I have to go to System/Settings and then to appearance then go to skin tab and then to settings....then the tab for "Background Options" then "enable custom Background".
Once I have done this I then go to "Background Path:" and this is where I get stuck..... It's been a real pig... because the only two options I have are "External Storage" and "Root Filesystem". It's impossible for me to be able to change either of these directorys to anything else. And believe me, I've tried.
I've tried adding my photos "under the main photo tab" on the main screen held on my external storage HD and I have no problem with that...
Is the reason I cannot change the background because my firetv is not rooted, (root is not possible, due to when it was produced).
I would really appreciate any advice or help on this, as I'm googled out, and I've given up looking at the amount of tube vids telling me how to install kodi...
Is it possible for me to use adbfire to add images to the firetv somehow?
Weird thing is, nearly all of the folders I have looked in within "external storage" and "root filesystem" are empty...
One good thing is that I managed to find a tube video showing how to update kodi on a firetv without loosing ones settings using adbfire, as I wanted to update to 14.2.
Thanks chaps for reading my help request... as I seem to be all out of luck at the moment. (wish it was as easy to change the wallpaper on my firetv as it is on my laptop).
Install ES file explorer on fire tv via adb. Link it to your dropbox or Google drive account. Copy photos to your cloud account using your PC. Access from fire TV using ES file explorer and download to folder of your choice.

Click to collapse
Thanks for the info D33H...... cheers mate..
I have to admit, I did eventually manage to get it done by using adbfire, by changing the push folder to "sdcard" and pushing my photos that way.... not ideal as I would like them in a particular folder of my choice, but at least kodi can now see my images in "external storage"....
But I like the idea of using ES file explorer, so I might try it that way as well.
On a sidenote, is it possible to run kodi without ones internet on,..... I've tried but i only get a flashing orange light,.... would this be happening, because i have set a 4 digit code on my firetv.. (to stop anyone from making unnecessary purchases by mistake).
I only ask because if my internet goes down it would be nice to still be able to use kodi.
Hi,
Can I use AFTV Stick to display information from a file created on PC, and display new updates when the file is modified? I want to use it on 3 TVs each TV has it's own AFTV Stick connected to same WiFi.
The best is if I can create a very small Excel file on PC, and display this file on TVs. Next day I want to update this Excel file and best if it can work automatically to put the new information on TVs. I also thought maybe create new JPG or PNG snapshot of this excel file and this is what AFTV will display.
I appreciate any help if this is even possible to do.
Thank you very much for your help,
Joe
You could create a file server (either local network or cloud based)
Then the firestick would access & load the file from the server - that way you would only ever have 1 file that every stick would access
The file would need to be closed & reopened if it was updated unless the program that is displaying the information from the server has an auto refresh feature but I don't know any that do off the top of my head
There are several digital signage apps in the official Fire TV appstore that can probably achieve what you want.
