[Q] Tried various Roms and Kernels USB/SD card still not recognised. - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I have been trying to get my N7 2013 to mount a usb stick and SD card to no avail. All my sd cards and usb sticks are formatted as fat 32, different OTG cables and connectors have been tried and stickmount installed. I have tried various alternetives to stickmount with the same result. I can mount the same SD cards, USB sticks and OTG cables on various Roms and Kernels on my 2012 N7. I am wondering if there is a setting that I am overlooking. Has anyone with a similar problem tried a dual USB stick, micro and normal USB connectors, this would eliminate the OTG cable. All other functions of the N7 USB port are working. Any help would be appreciated.

You need an app for that. Try Nexus OTG file manager

Thanks for replying Gotham. I tried your suggestion and it didn't work, I have tried various USB OTG Apps with no success. I am able to connect keyboard and mouse I can also connect an old Huawei E160 modem and my N7 2013 reads the micro SD using Nexus Media Importer.
Thanks

It works or it doesn't work?

I had already tried various apps Stickmount, the one that you suggested and others none worked with my OTG cables and USB pen drives or with my micro SD card and my USB drive reader. As stated before, I tried an old Huawei E160 USB HSDPA stick modem and it worked using the same OTG cables that I had tried before. I found an old multi card reader and that was recognised by Stickmount and Nexus Media Importer.
This means that it depends on the card reader used or the USB sticks. The USB pen drives that I was using were both 32 GB Kingston DT Micro drives.
Once again thanks for answering, I have pressed the thanks button.

I've had no issues with my SanDisk dual USB stick on stock rom and kernel.

Swapping internal memory with microsd(card reader) using cable. Etc.

Hi again
I was also wondering if it's possible to swap internal memory with a microsd card connected via a micro to USB cable using a card reader or can it only be done with internal microsd slot ? And also a stupid question but thought to just ask. Is it possible to transfer videos or files from a microsd card (card reader)/flash drive to the galaxy note 2 using that same cable ? I don't currently own the note 2 but I will soon. I'm just waiting to see if a 32gb will become available by the end of this month. Thanks so much for all your help !
What you're looking for is an OTG (on the go) cable... It'll allow you to connect usb devices to the micro usb, including keyboards, mouse, hdd, and even usb drives. You'll need to be rooted in order to use one though.

No that's the cable I'm referring to when I say 'micro to USB' cable. I'm wondering if you can swap internal memory of the galaxy note 2 for a microsd card connected by that cable using a card reader (with the microsd in it) or can you only swap internal memory with the microsd card in the phone and also if files or videos can be transferred from the microsd or a flash drive using that cable to the galaxy note 2. Thanks !

Can't seem to use external hard drive on my Tab 3

Having trouble accessing external hard drive. I have a USB thumbdrive, formatted to FAT32, and the tab will not even detect it. I tried a external hard drive, it has its own power adapter, formatted to fat32, still can't see it. The USB and External Hard Drive works fine on my S3 and my Note 3. Is this a hardware limitation?

AFAIK yes, the ground pin is left out, so no hardware support plus kernel support is missing in standard ROMs as well. See this thread as well. Someone said you can build a special USB OTG cable with own power support, but I haven't tried for myself.
My S3 and 3 8.0 both detect my 16gb thumb drive using the Samsung dongle.
I will probably get a 32gb thumb drive today, and also test it.

What USB Sticks and card readers work with Flo

Hi All
I had a frustrating 10 days or so with my new Nexus 7 2013 no being able to read my USB sticks. I had 2 OTG cables and 1 OTG connector, 2 USB micro drives and a USB reader for SD micro cards. All of these worked fine on my old N7 2012 in various combinations. I tried various mounting apps as well to no avail.
USB mouse and Keyboard worked fine.
I found an old USB modem (Stick) with an SD slot the N7 Flo mounted this with stickmount, I then tried a multicard reader and this also mounted and all files were read.
The conclusion of course is that some card readers do not work with the Flo and some USB sticks also.
My USB memory sticks are Kingston DT micro
The card reader was a cheap generic one.
The multi card reader that worked was a Kingston FCR-HS219/1.
It might be a good idea for the moderators to start a sticky where eqipment that works or not as the case may be, can be documented.
Nexus 7 2013 and the nexus 5 DO NOT work with USB otg natively. With root you can use what I use which is Stick mount or another option is to flash a ROM like Cyanogen which has the feature built in.
I know it's bs but it is what it is.
Frankly this is why I do like Samsung as their products support it and other features which you will need root for on the nexus line

MicroSd Problem

Hi, i bought this Xiaomi TipeC Adaptor
and this MicroSd Reader, to combine them toghether with my OP3.
But they just don't work toghether.
Separately, everything is fine, Xiaomi Adaptor charge my phone, MicroSd are working fine with other adaptors or with Pc, the reader either is working fine with Pc or others smarphones.
Did i miss something?
Thanks
still one test to do, connecting one OP3 on a PC with that adapter and see if you can transfer some file with MTP.
Did you turn on OTG in the OP3 settings? If you did, try it with a different OTG device and report back

Thanks man, really dind't come up with that, tried few minutes ago, it is working fine. Connected instantly, copies from e to Pc, zero problems with small and big files.

Yes man, i did, Otg it is on and it is working with a TypeC MicroSd Reader. Recognized instantly, can move files. Same MicroSd.
So, every single piece is working fine alone or in combo, just not working this combination, with XiaomiAdapter (TypeC to Micro Usb and MicroUsb MicroSd Reader) but i can't get why.
Maybe the Xiaomi adapter doesn't pass enought electricity to power the MicroUsb MicroSd Reader.
But I don't know how to "overvolt" the Otg Adapter in order to make it work.
Not sure why this occurs but I've had the same exact issue trying to use micro USB OTG adapters with a USB-A flash drive.
USB OTG just doesn't work unless you use a USB-C OTG adapter. Same thing happens in the Nexus 6P

USB C Card Reader?

Has anyone with the Tab S4 tried to use an external USB card reader? I'm thinking of using the tablet to back up photos from my DSLR (internal SD Card capacity permitting). I have a USB C card reader but have never been able to get it working on my Pixel 2 XL
I just tried and it worked for me with a thumb drive formatted exFAT and a USB C OTG cable. Should work with a USB C card reader or a standard USB card reader with an OTG cable.

Did you try going into settings, dev options, and change the usb connection type? Anytime I've had difficulty connecting something with the OTG, one of the settings always seems to get it to work.
