I am very new at this, so I apologize in advance. I have the Virgin Mobile Galaxy S3 SPH-L710 running 4.3.
I simply wanted to root it so i could get rid of the bloatware and install Sixaxis and play emulators, but I didn't really know where to start, so I started looking around and found this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2546505
So I basically did everything on there. I used Odin to install PhilZ Touch 6 Recovery (CWM 6.0.4.7) Did factory reset, wiped cache/dalvik. then installed the Odexed MK5 stock rooted zip, wifi fix zip, SuperSU update zip, and then the knox app remover zip.
Everything flashed just fine and it started right up. It had the Super Su app, but when I tried to install apps that need root permission it would say I don't have root access. I couldn't delete bloat apps and Super Su didn't show any apps and there isn't much I can do with it. So I guess it didn't work? Either way I wanted to try a different rom. Was gonna give Cyanogenmod a try. But every time I try to install it I get the little "Android bot laying on his back" thing and it says status 7. I tried to flash CM10, CM10.1, CM10.2, CM11. Nothing worked, same thing every time. Even tried different SD cards just in case of a mess up.
The phone itself works fine for now, calls and text work, wifi works. And it says there is an update, but when i hit accept, it reboots to recovery mode, does the "android fallen over" then boots back up.
Now here is my stupid part, I didn't backup the original cause the guide didn't say to. (Not blaming them, i should have know better) So I am assuming I have a messed up version of 4.3 and Cyanogenmod doesn't know what to do with me. I'm not sure. Here is where I am stumped and I have no idea where to go from here.
I posted this by accident in the wrong forum here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help/tried-rooting-s3-didnt-help-t2879278
But someone decided to help me anyways (thank you so much). They said all i need to do is update my recovery. so I went here
https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2lte/
And now I am running PhilZ 6.48.4, but I am still getting status 7 when I try to install CM11. I have tried CM10, CM10.1, CM10.2 and CM10.2.1 as well. I have been at this for days and i am going crazy because nothing I do seems to work. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with my phone? Thank you so much in advance.

only thing i can think of Is Odin the stock rom and start all over with trying to root......
I don't know how to explain it, but now everything is working perfectly....
I went back to the first site I posted about, Redownloaded everything, did the whole thing over, and root worked just fine. So I thought I would try my luck with CM11 and BOOM, working perfectly.
I have been tearing my hair out trying to get this to work for days and days and now, poof, it's all working. I dunno how, but I will take it. Thanks for the advice in both threads.

Get towelroot, is an apk that root your phone with one click, after that just download your favorite super user from the market and done.

I know I can get my device back, I'm just not sure how. I successfully rooted using CASUAL, no problems there. Got the normal root applications installed, did the Clockwork backup, everything was great.
I then decided to try a custom ROM - the Cyanogen 10.1. It downloaded fine, and I selected to also install Google Apps, then it rebooted and the Cyanogen boot screen with the spinning circle came up. However, this lasted way longer than I thought it should, so I looked it up, and what I got from the research is that I had the wrong gapps on there.
So, I followed the instructions in this thread (same problem as me), and wiped the system. However, I believe I used the wrong list item, and now everything I had is gone. I can't boot from recovery because it doesn't exist, and when booting into CM I just get the same error message that setup has stopped working. I thought maybe I could put a new ROM on the sd card or phone harddrive and boot from that, but both are inaccessible through USB on my Mac.
I can get it into ODIN mode (where it says "Downloading... Do not turn off target!"), which I'm thinking is what I want, and I have Heimdall installed and it runs and recognizes my device, but I cannot for the life of me find a tar.gz file to use.
If anyone can offer any sort of help, I would super appreciate it.

Your recovery shouldn't be affected by a wipe (unless you flashed something over it) as ROMs don't flash recovery, therefor vol up + home + power should get you in it. If you success to, You should be able to mount through recovery.
As for Heimdall, it just got S3 support (last week I believe), therefor it might not be easy to find a stock file for it. That being said, if you have access to any Windows pc, that'd be the easiest solution here (using Odin).
Yes, I can still get into the recovery menu, but when I use "backup and restore>restore" it says No files found. Is there anything I can do to just get a working OS running? Or am I just doing it totally wrong, I'm new to the rooting stuff. The Windows computer will be my last resort haha.

Windows pc is definitely the easiest option here but you try mounting your SD from recovery, redownload the ROM and Gapps you wanna use, put them on your device and flash them after a factory reset.
If you wiped your SD card, it's normal that you don't have a backup anymore.

It's aaaliiiiiiive! Grabbed an extra micro SD I had, threw Cyanogen 10.1.0 RC4 on it, and installed it just fine. Now updating to RC5. My only question now is how to get Google Apps on there. Does this need to be done beforehand, or can it be done after?

You usually flash the Gapps right after flashing the ROM, before rebooting.
P.S.: fully reading the instructions helps before flashing

First boot after you flash will always take longer than normal. After that, it's fine
I was experiencing a lot of issues within the last few days so I decided to wipe my phone and reinstall the rom. I've been on the 7/11 build of CM 10.1 since it came out. The phone has been a little wonky lately out of the and wouldn't reboot or go into recovery. I managed to get into Recovery through the ROM Manager app. The power button seemed to be a little touchy. I did a factory reset and wiped the cache. Before I could do anything further it rebooted and brought me into the Rom fresh, making me log into my google account and set up the phone from the start.
The issue now is that the phone is not showing as being rooted anymore. Is there something I can do to get root back from this point? Do I just go back into Odin and root as if I’m doing it for the first time? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

not sure how you could lose root on CM 10.1 but you could use odin to flash back to stock and start over, or you can just flash the .tar file for the 2.6.1.0 TWRP recovery in odin and that will root your phone with out having to go all the way back to stock.
Heres the link for TWRP 2.6.1.0 http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/hercules/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.1.0-hercules.tar
hey i had the same thing happen to two t989's that i own, one i had flashed the newest chameleon os on it, the other I had revolt.Basically I tried numerous ways to fix it, even downloading and flashing superuser zip again. thing is, I still had access to custom recovery, but no root. Nothing worked, I ended up finding out that the super user program was the issue. Try downloading this one, from this link, and flashing thru the recovery, it will work. No need to reflash anything else.

Go on dev options and set root access to apps and adb
So I'm not a complete and utter n00b here, as I've been rooting and installing CM for at least three years now on several different phones. But this problem vexes me...
Patient: SIII, formerly rooted and running CM10.1 just fine. A few weeks ago, I tried to install a 10.2 stable build, and it somehow took my root away. I tried every trick I knew how - installing the root files via Odin (many versions), via ADB, via Kingo Root...nothing. Absolutely nothing I try will get this thing to give me my root back, and the ads are starting to really get on my nerves.
My ticker says 15 attempted installs, but I don't think it's blocking me from rooting...is it? All the phones I've rooted I've never had a problem like this, where absolutely nothing will allow root to "take", such as it is.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks!
Wow, nothing? I figured someone would at least sigh heavily, berate me for not reading the forums completely, then point me to a thread where this has been discussed ad nauseum
Last night, I tried rooting with TWRP, CWM, every variant and trick I could find to get this thing to root for me, and while these things all seem to load fine, none of them give me my root access back. No one has any ideas?
Thanks!
help
im using rooted 4.3 stock rom in t999..
everytime i boot into recovery it says "fixed root"
any solve for this?????
Did you dirty flash CM10.2 over CM10.1? if so, it might have failed to write the partition completely/correctly. I would suggest to backup everything that you can (adb backup or similar) and then wipe everything then reflash fresh CM10.2.0 + GApps + SuperSU or Koush's Superuser flashable zip.
What's up guys!
Using ROM installer I flashed vanir 4.4 along with 4.4 gapps on my sprint gs3 sph l710. I wiped the cache and it looked as if it were installing fine but winded up getting stuck in boot loop mode instead. Now when I try to boot into recovery the twrp screen flashes and then it goes straight into bootlop mode from there. Now i cant acsess any of my backups. I can get into down load mode but unfortunately my computers messed up right now. I can't hit the run button on Odin because the screen is too big. I know it sucks!!! Does anyone know some tricks I can use or have any recommendations. Your help would be greatly appreciated! BTW.. I was running illusion 4.3 when this happened.

Can you try using this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746680
Maybe that'll work, you can use it to return to stock, and if anything I would recommend going back to stock before doing anything else. Also, it may not be the consensus of the site here but in my own opinion, I don't like using rom installer or goo manager or anything. I like doing it all myself in recovery. I've heard one too many stories of people getting hardbricked because their rom installer or whatever downloaded the international version of the rom they wanted :/ always best to check your own md5 checksums and make sure you're downloading the rom for your phone from your phone's forum.
As for the exact reason your phone did that? I couldn't tell you, maybe with a little more info someone more knowledgeable here could tell you
So i got my computer fixed. I havent tried the tool kit in the thread you recommeded. I decided first to use a stock file i have on odin first that has saved me from softbricks in the past. I set everything up hit start, watched the process complete with the pass. Now it shows the stock boot animation but still stuck in bootloop mode. I put it into recovery, which is now stock instead of twrp, wiped cache, davlik cache and factory reset then i reconnected to odin and reflashed the stock file. Still stuck in bootloop mode!!!! Plain reboot and same thing :/ so for the hell of it, i wanted to see if i can to my backups by restoring twrp. So i flashed my cf auto root and then flashed my twrp file and bam!!!! Twrp was full functioning with all my backups!!! next i restored my latest illusion 4.3 rom and wala! Ive got a fully functioning rooted phone with a custom rom. I flipped through everything to make sure it looks good and it does. Except.... any photos and music that are saved to phone and not sd card are gone I dont understand, everthing else is backed. Contacts, call logs, messages, text messages, apps, customised settings etc...I even flashed my carbon rom that had the same music and pics. When i open gallery it shows the photo count in snapseed and others im looking for but then they all start dissapearing!!! i also dont understand why the stock file which has saved me from softbricks before didnt work. I dont know anything about checking md 5 checksums but if its worth the time ill do my research! Im happy i got my phone working but i would like to be more solid in what im doing. Maybe someone can help shed some light on this.
So I wanted to root this tablet, and I used a video online to help me do so.
I installed the USB drivers, got Odin 3, and loaded in CF_AutoRoot_Port_T700_BeansTown106.tar
It rooted my tablet and I was pretty happy about that. I then had update supersu, by getting the SU binaries.
So I came to this site and downloaded the recommended Supersu, and flashed it. It fixed that.
Well, then I wanted to get a custom ROM, so I flashed the Cyanogenmod 12, along with the component with it.
I found I didn't like it compared to my 5.0.2 Lolipop, and so I tried finding the stock ROM.
The gator download site everyone was showing refused to let me download anything, and just about all the ROMS seemed like they were from countries other than the U.S.
I searched for awhile, found nothing, then found a ROM called the Ironman Lolipop ROM, it was close enough to stock, so I flashed it.
Suddenly everything was normal, but then supersu needed binaries again, and after I flashed it again, it just stopped asking if it should grant permission, making the root useless.
Frustrated, I looked online again for ROMS, found a Canada one, decided to download, it would take two hours.
Well I'm not from Canada so I doubted it would work, and didn't want to wait two hours.
I decided to Flash back the Cyanogen.
Well unfortunately I went in and found out that I had deleted it earlier, whoops. And so my data wipe brought me back to Ironman ROM.
So, thinking that flashing to Iron Man screwed up my root I tried to re-root with Odin, the same way as the first.
It then had trouble booting, and when it did, it hung at the Samsung logo.
Now I've been stuck on this logo for about an hour, I can't turn it off. I'm assuming the only way to is to wait for it to run out of power.
I have been using TWRP this whole time.
I twice have backed up, and wiped data.
When I hit restore I saw no backups though, I'm not sure if they were for the ROM?
I don't know, I only have a year of experience.
Edit: I have an 8.1" T700 from Amazon.

Hi! To force reboot while in a soft brick, press and hold power+home button+ both volume buttons all at the same time.
Then when the screen goes black, quickly press the odin\download mode button combo or recovery comba if you wish.
Luckily, I have mirrored the latest firmware for the T700 to a faster hosting site. This is an UK firmware and is the latest one. It should flash fine as I have flashed different firmwares from different countries many times.
Download Firmware (fast download): https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347761130
Now, ironrom has problems with root sometimes. When I make roms I don't preroot them as they cause problems of binaries if you preroot them. Anyway feel free to flash the firmware with odin or load an custom ROM to your sd card and flash it.
Hope this helps!

Thank you for getting me out of the brick and back to stock.
However going into Supersu it says.
"There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSu cannot install it. This is a problem!
If you just upgraded to Android 5.0, you need to manually re-root- consult the relevant forums for your device!"
My question is, can I properly re-root it the way I had been?
I'm assuming if it soft bricks again I can just reinstall a stock ROM again.
Also all these ROMS and backups take up a lot of space, how would I go about deleting those when I'm done?

In my files app, look for an folder called TWRP. Your backups are in there. To root simply install twrp and follow the twrp method to root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=59638836
You can delete your backups from within twrp. Just select restore, then the backup, then delete.
