FTF files are regular ZIP files. Open it with 7-Zip/WinRAR and you'll find some .sin files inside (.sin is a proprietary format used by Sony). Some of these .sin files (like system.sin) can be decrypted by Flashtool by going to Tools => Sin Editor => Extract data. This will leave you with an .ext4 file (like system.ext4). This file can be mounted and edited directly if you're on Linux or you can view and extract its contents by using ext2explore or another similar tool on Windows...

how do i extract the contents of 4.0.2.A.42.ftf so that i can load it into custom rom creator studio and edit this stock rom/firmware to my liking? i wish to build my own rom from scratch and i want to base it from a stock rom of my phone (xperia play r800i). can anyone point me into this development/modding of roms?
Here are what i need to do:
1. removed bloatware stuff that i think is really bloatware for me
2. tweak the build.prop, init.d, sysctl.conf files, etc.
3. have my own home launcher
4. edit system.ui or the main looks of my android phone
5. incorporate auto-rooting feature to my rom
6. adding my own battery saving techniques to this rom through undervolting, governors and io schedulers.
If there is a thread on this topic which is universal for all android phones please give me a link. thanks. I have tested different roms for my xperia play and I decided that the best thing now for me is to be a rom developer as well. I already have Eclipse, JDK and Android SDK, Flashtool, etc. to begin with. What else do i need? thanks
I can't really help, but for #6 you'll need to make a kernel

You can extract the .sin files from the .ftf with an archiving program like 7zip or Winrar, then user sin2img to convert the data and system .sin files to a readable .img format. Then edit the files from there

it seems that my winrar version is obsolete lol installed 4.11 now and 7zip to be sure. now where do i edit my apks?
i installed "4.0.3 Leak On Screen Buttons" which was in zip having two folders
1 - meta- inf [which has a com folder (with files in it update-binary and updater-script) and with three files CERT.RSA, MANIFEST.MF and CERT.SF]
2 - system (in it framework-res.apk)
so i installed this zip via cwm, but i didn't liked the concept as it wasn't looking good, etc
so as i had already backed up my original framework-res.apk , so using root explorer i moved it back in sys/framework folder
restarted my phone and all got fine....
Though my question is as those files : update-binary and updater-script ---- CERT.RSA, MANIFEST.MF and CERT.SF are not searchable and i guess should not be deleted as they were just updated .. so still would they be impacting my phone or its all kool as i havn't been able to search them or delete them ?!
is it important to find and delete them or its no need for that and its ok ?!
Hope someone understands what i am trying to ask and reply appropriately please i would highly appreciate the same!
Think them like busybox (so you can mount delete etc)
And script file, that includes commands to do.
Every cwm zip files includes them. when you install zip file, these commands executed.

Just ease me by telling that so its nothing but just used for commands, so i need not to be worried for them could be hampering my phone's performance ?!
a yes answer will do

Just to clarify,
That folder contains the Zip signatures and file manifests. as well as the CWM controll scripts. ect. these should never be coppied to the phone on a flash. likewise if you edit them the zip will prob not work without resigning the zip.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear.
They are not flashed. Hence you can't find them. So no need to worry.

Awesome thank you! I understood they just help in probably installing that particular app giving its own correct signatures and file manifests w.e so it gets installed via cwm and nothing more . And as i just backed up my original framework-res.apk to framework folder so its ofcourse all back to normal, though my phone is fine always as it was, I just had this doubt in my mind and m glad it got cleared thanks again!!
Cheers!!
Where did you place the Meta-INF files? I know system files goto system/framework but I cant find where Meta-INF files go. I'm using a root file manager.

You are not correct about the system files. And I recommend you do some more reading on how these zips work.
Metainf is FOR THE ZIP. And has been prety well explained above.

I'm trying to compile a flashable zip file with the file manager inside this app. It does not do it correctly it creates a zip folder with the flashable folder inside which does not work I need a direct folder that opens to become flashable... Am I doing something wrong can anyone knows try to create a flashable zip file with this utility. I have root explorer and that works great but I would really like to use this app instead

I've zipped and flashed whole roms with this app? What is it doing wrong? What type of zip are you using? 7zip?
I zipped JusTunBean and it did this
JusTunBean/JusTunBean/flashable stuff root explorer does JusTunBean/flashable stuff make sense? It's making a folder inside a folder

Gimme a little time to unzip then rezip something and see what it does for me! I'm at work so it won't be right now but soon I just unzipped and zipped a kernel file perfect. Are you trying to rezip a file you unzipped. If so go to the screen that has the Meta info and multiselect all of those then zip. If you want I'll show you screenshots, just let me know

Hi,
I have several wallpaper.zip-files. Everytime I change or update my rom, I have to install each of them seperately via CWM which gets a bit annoying. Is there a way to combine these zip-Files, so that I have only to flash one file, not three or four?
Thank you!
provide the zips you want to combince
I can do it as soon I can access my main PC again. How do you want to do it? Is there a way I can do it for myself?
Thank you
simplest way is to open system folder of 1 zip and put all stuff of system folders of other zip into that zip and then flash. EASY.
Is this working, even there are separate folders in each zip-file?
Provide the zip files here. I'll combine them and let you know how I did it...I have to see the file structure first for that
Cheers,
AJ

Will the Metadata need to be changed to include the updates we would be including?
Someone could put me to spend or to link to a storage site or to my email address:
LG G4 - Framework-res.apk and lge-res.apk.
They are missing to me, thank you very much.
Email: [email protected]
I guess you have the H815?
Just download a system img of the H815 from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/qa-tmo-vzw-intl-variants-soon-root-lg-t3164785
Mount it with linux or use a tool like "OFSMount" on windows to view the files.
Did you delete the apks or why do you need them?
Do you know that the stock rom use odex files?
I think you will find no source code inside the apks, if that is what you want.

Thanks for the tip. I will try the link & ofsmount. I edit & I develop apk files for 5.1 system, and this should be. Especially lg phones. apktool, etc... you know
Ok then I guess you know how to deodex the rom files.
But why do you just copy the files from your phone?
Don't you have a LG G4?
IMPORTANT:
I noticed that OFSMount doesn't show all files (maybe permission problem), but most of them. Don't use the program to edit the img file!
Only use it to copy the files you want from the imgae.
OFSMount doesn't support EXT4. Maybe another tool is able to do it.
I would recommend to use a linux system.
