Is there a way to prevent OTA updates to the Nexus 7 Wifi (2013)? My device is rooted with Towelroot.
Additionally, if by chance I do accidentally update, can I downgrade later?
Thanks
Why would you not want update? You realize the improvements and enhancements of KitKat? But you can fastboot flash any version of android available for the n7 2013 with a factory image. Or if you don't know how to use fastboot, just use a toolkit like wugfresh. Or you can just flash a zip of any android through twrp.

After what happened to my 2012 Nexus 7, I don't want any new major revisions to slow the device down. I also know with Apple devices, the same is true. That's why my iPhone 5 is Jailbroken so it won't update to to iOS 8.
I have the twrp root. I haven't messed with it though. Are you saying that I can install any flash even cyanogenmod with twrp?
L will be faster than KK. Update it.

Yes you can install cyanogen. Just make sure its for the right device. Builds for nexus 7(2013) WiFi will say flo, as that's its nickname.

Noticed a new build was released for OTA. Doing a little research I discovered it won't work while rooted.
Question being, what's the easiest way to update? Temporarily run custom recovery and flash it? I don't want to loss root access or any data. If needed I'll re-root again, but rather not.

There are many ways to accomplish the same end goal.
You can actually install the OTA while rooted. Just need to run the small fix in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44597339#post44597339
Rerooting on this device is super simple.
There are also other options like flashing the factory images or one of the pre-rooted odexed/deodexed repackaged mostly stock ROMs. You can find them described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2415497
So just temporarily run custom recovery then flash the update? but where can I download the latest OTA update?

You need to run the fix I mentioned above OR unroot BEFORE installing the OTA or the OTA will fail near the end.
You can find the OTA here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2415497
Don't quite understand the post, so better to just hold off on an attempt.. Would using the unroot option in SuperSU, allowing the OTA update to go through, then rerooting work fine without deleting data?
I'm know more about Nook Tablet than Nexus 7, didn't care what I did to my Nook because I could fix it. I'm more cautious with this.

Super-Su unroot never help you if you delete something in the /system directory
1)you must flash fix after root
2)do not flash permanent custom recovery and relock bootloader (if your bricked you devices you can send to Warranty Service)
3)replace backup of /system directory before update
and after update clean Dalvik Cache before flash Root again (if superuser privilegies still anavalable for you)
Understand the fix now. Noticed the update went through, but got an error when it finished. Flash ota update in temporary recovery. Correct?

I just downloaded the OTA to the device, unrooted, installed the OTA in TWRP, and then the latest superSU zip (still in recovery). Reboot and voila.

This is a Nexus device. There's almost no way to hard-brick it. Worst case, reboot into bootloader, and fastboot push the stock images.
The fix worked, and I'm still rooted. with all data. Temporarily booted into TWRP, flashed the fix and forced OTA update. Thank you!

Don't fear the ota update. There were no negative effects on my rom or kernel.

LOL if you flash STOCK and then bootloader - you will get bootloop hardbrick without FASTBOOT and ADB !!! (only APX)
(my nexus 7 1 gen in this situation)
------------------------------------------------------
why you try new customs rom, when in few weeks would be android 5.0 ?

Hey everyone, Im new here, just got the Nexus 7 2013 Asus.
I updated to Kit Kat right away, I tried using that root toolkit thing or whatever... it got my tablet unlocked but it would stay stuck on a message that it was trying to boot some .img file when I clicked root...
Long story short, I restored 2 times and I guess that doesnt work with Kit Kat yet... and I relocked my tablet. Anyway know how I can correctly unlock and root my new Nexus 7 on Kit Kat?
After an unlock you can manually flash the recovery IMG then just flash the super su zip for root.
Adb fastboot recoveryimage.IMG
Then the super su zip can be flashed once in a custom recovery.
If needed I can do a team viewer with you and get you all set up.

Make sure you download the correct custom recovery for your device (prerequisite 3).

Dear Experts,
I'm still new at this game, so bear with me please.
I have a LTE N7 on 4.3.1 (JLS361) that is unlocked & rooted.
Now I get tho OTA Update to 4.4 (KRT16S) downloaded & ready to install.
Aside from all those bad things that don't work anymore in 4.4 (eg. FLASH), what will happen ?
Will my N7 revert to a locked & unrooted device ? or will it stay unlocked & rooted ?
Or will it stay unlocked, but unrooted, and I only need to flash the SuperSU ZIP again ?
Thanks for enlightening me.

Mine is also unlocked and rooted and want to upgrade to KK.
When you said flash, you meant I had to install TWRP first then flash SU again?
I am curious because when I first rooted my N7, I used the Nexus 7 Toolkit and did not install TWRP. Can't I just use the toolkit again to re-root?

If you had a TWRP installed and downloaded the superuser binaries when you rooted initially, all you need to do is flash them again by pressing the "install" button in recovery. Based on the way he asked it, I believe that was the context of the question.
If you don't, you should install a custom recovery:
Wi-Fi only: http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/flo
LTE: http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/deb
Then download the superuser binaries to your N7:
http://download.chainfire.eu/370/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip
And flash them by pressing the "install" button in recovery.
Your toolkit might work, but why not just do it yourself?

You can install another custom recovery, e.g., clockworkmod.
Some toolkits reflash stock recovery after rooting, but that could only useful if you have something like a Samsung or HTC. Absolutely no point on a nexus device.

Thanks again for the help, xdhall. Sorry if I sound like a newbie, but I had the Note 8.0, I rooted and I could never get it back to stock. The original stock image for the US Note 8.0 was not available so I was stuck.
Didn't want the same thing happened with the N7, but you brought up a good point... this IS a Nexus device!
Thanks

Thanks xdhall.
That makes it much easier to get back to ROOT then.
Just having to reboot in Recovery Mode and install the latest superSU.zip will be a breeze.
I'll probably wait a few weeks/months to upgrade to 4.4 though, as the comments on the 4.4 release are not that good, and I have several very important (for me) sites that still use Adobe Flash.
Anyway, I'm glad I haven't to start from scratch (backup, unlock, restore, flash recovery, flash superSU), as this is extremely time-consuming and tedious.
Again Thanks & have a nice WE.
Hello all,
Should I do OTA or just go FACTORY?
My Nexus 7 2013 is running 5.02, unlocked/rooted running TWRP custom recovery.
I have about 3 OTA updates to sideload to bring me up to 5.1.1 using the Nexus Root Toolkit. Should I even bother going OTA or just go with a factory pack and get it done in one step so to speak? I get the feeling doing several OTA updates is just asking for bugs and other problems. I don't care if it means me losing my settings and starting over if doing so is the better decision.
Please advise....thanks in advance.
It's a lot less hassle to just flash the factory images. But... There are TWRP-flashable zips here made by scrosler that will take you from 5.0.2 to 5.1.0 and then 5.1.1; the threads where each zip is will also have a TWRP-flashable bootloader.

Hi, thanks for the response. I actually took the plunge and used Nexus Root Toolkit by Wug to simply download the factory image and install it. I was able to keep all my settings and I remained unlocked BUT I did have to ROOT and install TWRP again which was simply a matter of clicking the button in the toolkit. I was done in less than 15 minutes. lol
That was definitely the way to do it. Simple, easy, no hassles.
Yep, there's that too--it just automates the process. I have used it a few times too, and I have nothing at all against it, but for the last couple of updates on my N7 2013 I just dirty-flashed scrosler's pre-rooted stock updated ROMs.

I'm not aware of those items. I'll have to check them out for future use. I probably won't need it though. I doubt there are going to be more updates for the Nexus 7 2013 as it is getting 'old' technically. If it sees Marshmallow I will be completely shocked! lol Though, there could always be another security patch released. Yet, my old Samsung Galaxy S3 was immediately protected because I use Textra and they patched against Stagefright quickly. You never know, it could happen.
Thanks for the info, etc.
I'm getting ready to sell my Nexus 7 (upgrading to either a Moto X Pure or a Nexus 6) and I flashed it down to Kit Kit and then used the OTA updates to go back to 5.1.1. Every time I try to flash a lollipop image, I get the system.img not found error. I've tried flashing the imgs separately and it's never worked right.

I like to do that after a while. For some reason, things start to get wonky when you flash custom roms. I think some things get skipped over when you just flash newer roms. Occasionally I will do the same thing.
hey i got the september patch and i want to install is with fireflash
so what can i do having mods installed and getting this message it has been detected that you may be trying to flash a block-level OTA, but your /system, /vendor, or /oem partition
has been modified. This will likely cause the flash to fail
i got surround sound twrp nexus luncher and other miner changes i want september patch what do i need to do using a nexus 5x 32g android 7.0????

Hi! I flashed the september patch using FF. And it goes fine. I had a stock ROM, custom kernel, custom recovery (twrp), rooted and unlocked. The flash from FF works fine. That is in my own experience tho. But if you want to make sure, do a backup first.
I have a Wifi Nexus 7 running 6.0 that is running TWRP. It has a dead USB port. I'd like to update to the latest security update so I can get rid of the notification.
Can anyone either, tell me how to run the stock update with TWRP, or replace TWRP with stock recovery without having a working USB port?

N7 is no longer supported and you will not get the latest security update from stock factory image. Copy CM's zip file wirelessly to your device then boot TWRP and flash the ROM.
