TouchWiz GPS vs Aosp GPS - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Would someone be able to identify why my gps locks quicker with aosp roms but not with TouchWiz roms?
With TouchWiz roms it will usually take 30 secs to 3 mins or even 5 mins to lock.
While with aosp it will be less than 4 secs.
Thank you

In my opinion Samsung's GPS radios suck. I think I had problems with the one in my Galaxy Nexus, probably had problems with my S4, and the one in my Note 3 constantly thinks I'm moving even when I'm standing still! I'll be standing in one place and the 'person' indicator will be moving around in about a 2-3 foot radius of where I'm actually standing. Extremely annoying when I'm trying to play Ingress or use walking navigation.
It seems I have these problems on both TW and AOSP ROMs. Your issue may be due to the GPS config file in AOSP having your country set whereas the TW one doesn't.

I haven't change gps config file in aosp rom. I'm currently running Will slimkat rom. Also tried cyanogenmod as well. Aosp has instant lock while it will take forever for TouchWiz to lock. I've tried different TouchWiz roms as well. All with similar results without changing any settings.
I think it's either software issue or my location. I'm from Canada...

I get lock in under 5 seconds in my house, and nearly instantly outdoors with touchwiz.
Suggestions:
1) make sure the baseband (modem and non-hlos) and bootloader match the firmware revision you're on. (NF1 for NF1, etc)
2) do a factory wipe, power off, but into odin mode, and do a full reinstall of stock using desktop odin
3) turn off gps (location) and wifi in settings, power down phone, pull battery (and sim), power up (without sim), perform the nv reset procedure, then power of phone when prompted, pull battery, put sim back in, power it back up and re enable your toggles and try again.
hopefully one of those helps.

Thanks, I try it out. I get a lock in 4 secs with aosp. So I know it's not the hardware...

Just a wild guess, but could it be that on aosp something else is accessing GPS, before you actually use it and on the other ROM it isn't? It takes much longer to get the fix from cold start, than it takes from warm start (warm being GPS was used very recently and has all sat, time and location info and cold means it wasn't used for a while and needs to update). GPS is not working, unless some program requests the location data and maps are not the only program using it. So for example if Google + is using GPS to report your location just before you're using map, it will be fast due to warm start, if nothing uses it for hours, it will be cold start and will take longer and if cell network access is slow, it will take even longer to assist GPS.
As far as GPS showing standing person is moving 2-3 ft, that's normal, since under best sat. coverage consumer GPS accuracy is about 5-10ft. I did some tests with geological markers and usually if you stand still for about min or so the GPS will keep on averaging and will pin point location to about 3 feet at best. I'm not even sure consumer GPS stores location at accuracy less than 1 yard.

I'm on Touchwiz as well and get an almost instant lock for GPS.
Might it be the rom you use?

I tried tweaked vision x and effortless roms. And I'm using Canadian note 3 with Rogers.
All with the same results.

I think that might be my problem. I have issue with locking after I boot up my device or haven't used gps for a while. Once the satellites are locked, I have no issues in locking again if I attempt again within short period.
So is there a way to keep the gps in 'warm state'? I usually leave my gps location on by default.

Not your typical GPS question

I've noticed that after flashing a new ROM it can take the gps some amount of time to lock. I've also noticed that when you have the GPS lock on your location, turn it off, wait a bit, and have it relock it does it pretty quick. Does the GPS remember your previous location and, for instance, if you turn it off and go somewhere new even if its a few miles away it takes a while for it to relock? If this was the case, would leaving the GPS on at all times actually fix this problem? When you leave it on and go into maps you see the little 'GPS circle' that indicates when you're locked but when you're not using an application that requires it its not there... I assume that if this is the case the GPS is passive and not wasting battery life, but if its in this passive state will it help it to lock on quicker if you move locations?
I'm asking because I've always wondered if I should leave the GPS 'on' at all times because it only uses it if it really needs it, but it will be quick to lock on since its always passively tracking your location. I'm referring to its use in Jellybean but I'm sure its the same in ICS. Thoughts?
GPS should lock fast if AGPS data is downloaded, do you have a working data connection?
Beamed from my Maguro.
Of course. When I noticed this happening I was on 4g. For some reason (it seems to depend on the rom and kernel) the GPS locking is always finicky. Sometimes it takes a while to lock, other times it does it real quick, and sometimes it'll decide to just not find it at all. I recall it happening on ICS as well but I'm running JB roms now.
Try using a app like GPS Status to get a lock before firing up your navigation app.
That's what I do, and it works good.
Beamed from my Maguro.

A couple of issues?

- Has anybody been experiencing 3G/HSPA+ signal issues whilst on CM10-M2 or the CM10 10/14 nightly?
I completely lost my signal until I had a friend call my phone. And then it came back, but it was very slow. (The indicator was grey) This seems to happen often.
- Also, do profiles work?
I have a School profile (default lockscreen with a pattern) and a Home profile (insecure lockscreen) It seems like switching in between these does nothing since I have to still unlock the device with a pattern when I use the Home profile.
- Home button issues?
This just might be my phone, but my homebutton has not been waking my device sometimes. I have to push it extra hard for it to register.

Grey bars means you aren't connected to Google Services, I haven't had any issues with signal.
The home button is a known issue. Mine does most of the time but sometimes it takes two presses.

It could just possibly be a bad connection within the hallways (cell signal has been known to falter in there.) But even using my phone outside seems to yield a weak signal.
Okay, I thought that my home button was broken, thanks for clearing that up!
Using capacitive buttons would be some much more durable..
So, after much hassle (I managed to brick my phone) I finally managed to fix my data speeds.
Switched back to stock TW ICS.
Data speed aren't 12mbps, but at least fast enough for me to actually use my data.
Which is strange, but heck, I can finally use my phone again.
Just have to wait for the OTA Jellybean update then...

FrostyJB was the first ROM that I ever installed on my GSIII.
And I hated it....
That experience just wasn't as fast as I would like and the battery life was terrible.
I'm open to suggestions for other TW-based JB ROMS though if anyone has any.
Edit:
Even stock ICS TW doesn't suit me. Battery life is terrible (Not used at all today, screen's been on for 30 minutes = 79% battery.) and the OS itself feels groggy and slowed.
CM10 feels like the only ROM that I could really use.
For your home button, have you disabled svoice? Double press home and if svoice opens go into settings and uncheck double press home to open.
For profiles, not too sure as I've never really used them, but have you looked into apps like Tasker?
How long ago did you try the jb roms? Both Frosty and XquiziT have come a long way and according to almost everyone are great daily drivers.
For data speeds, have you tried all the different modems? My thread is now stickied in Development. Check post 3 for some build.prop tweaks that may help as well.
As for battery life, it sounds like you're just not using the correct settings if that's your goal. Turn off any features when you're not using them. Especially auto sync. If you have a poor signal this can decimate your battery. (Which may be the main cause anyway, to which id have to say to try the different modems.) I generally get great battery. Often 3-4 hours screen on and can go 20-30 hours on a charge.
Hope some of this helps.

**Edit: I got ninja-posted **
I agree on stock firmware being sluggish. It's just terrible. I personally chose to get away from TouchWiz altoghether. I don't hate the way it looks, I just like AOSP more. I've been using CM10 for over two months now.
Well, as it's been said, the home button issue has been around for a while now. Don't press it hard, just press a few times.
I don't use profiles myself. I get the feeling that the profile settings just don't encompass security settings. I would expect that to be for ringtones/volumes etc. But maybe Tasker can do this for you (PIN or slide, depending on location)? Tasker is very cool, and even more powerful. Even if it can't do this for you, it's still worth every penny (imo).
As far as your data connection, if data stops working, try cycling it off and on. It should re-establish the connection. Have you tried different modems?

I have S-Voice disabled, yes. Plus, the whole issue of the home button doesn't really bother me anymore. Simply reaching my hand up to push the powerbutton is easier now that I have switched cases.
I tried FrostyJB at the end of September.
The build.prop tweaks seem too far out of my league, but thank you so much for the modem idea!
I can remember installing the UVLI8 once upon a time and getting insane results. Will definitely give it a shot. The Jellybean modems work on JB 4.1.2 right?
My battery usage has always been the bare minimum. Literally no toggles are on (GPS, WiFi, Sync, etc) and that's my status. I've been noticing that "Cell Standby" has been the primary culprit for battery drain.

Need GPS Help / Advice.. best rom, or android version for GPS on T989??

I must say, I love my T989 except for the GPS. It is by far the best phone I have ever owned.
Problem is, I use GPS daily for my job. The GPS just always seems to be problematic in that while driving, using Google Navigation, the GPS signal randomly drops out. I will be driving, and miss a turn because the GPS seemingly lost signal, then after 30-90 seconds, it regains signal and the Navigation catches up. The entire time I am driving, the blue circle around the blue arrow in google navigation seems pretty big. This circle indicates how accurate the GPS is and it seems I never get really good accuracy. It seems like I just get low GPS locking ability and thus it's not always exactly accurate and frequently drops for a 30-90 seconds.
I have tried Jedi Knight ROM based on 4.0.4 and it was the worst, nearly unusable, took forever to lock and dropped a lot.
I am now using Jedi Mind Trick based on 4.0.3 and it seems to lock decently fast, but still never gets entirely accurate like my HTC phones all did, and it still drops for 30-90 seconds often, making it very hard to rely on for Navigation.
Many times I have flashed AGPS.zip and that helps lock faster, but the GPS still drops often and never seems to get reliably accurate.
I know this fixes it for many, and has made Jedi Mind Trick usable for me, but still not very dependable.
Does this phone just have a crappy GPS Receiver?
I haven't tried roms before 4.0.3, did GPS work better on earlier versions, or before ICS?
Is there any roms I should try that might work better with GPS Navigation?
Anyone using GPS daily without any drops at all? If so, what ROM?
Should I try different Radios or something?

Google Specific 3.1 No SSL
That was the only thing that got my GPS usable.
It now locks fast, but just doesn't seem to ever have a strong signal and is very prone to dropping out.
Try downloading the "GPS status" app from the play store. Hit menu>tools>manage A-GPS> and Download.

I had similar problems with jmt and other ROMs, even after trying several of the GPS fixes.
I've been using cm10 nightly 10/12 build now and GPS is perfect, nearly instant locks and no drops during navigation.
The only downside I've found is battery life, its not horrible but its no jmt either. Expect 12-16 hour battery life.
To me, jellybean offers so much that I'm willing to forgive battery life for the first time.
Hope his helps

I dont know why some of you have issue with GPS. The issue is not from the rom. I think your phone might be in a bad batch or your GPS files are not set up correctly.
For me, GPS on our phone is very great. It locks fast and never loses signal. The accuracy is within 20 feet.

I also use the GPS almost daily to track my runs with Endomondo application, and sometimes specially when running slow the GPS gets fixed to a location and will not update until 15-30 seconds after, maybe the same happens to you when driving in the city and you are very slow.
There is a feature called "GPS Static Navigation" that Samsung disabled by default in some of their phones, basically on the ones using a SirfIV GPS Chipset. The problem here is that our phone (SGH-T989) does not us that type of GPS Chip(set).
I've been trying to find a way to know the status of the GPS Static Navigation in our phone, but I haven't found anything about it just the info got from pdadb.net which is the following;
Satellite-Navigation
Built-in;GPS_module: Supported
GPSrotocol: NMEA 0183
GPS_Antenna: Internal antenna
Complementary-GPS;Services: Assisted GPS, QuickGPS, Geotagging, Simultaneous GPS
Navigation:Chip(set): Qualcomm gpsOne
Since this Chip(set) works with Assisted GPS, trying GPS Status application from Google Market and going to Menu / Tools / Manage A-GPS state / Download; it will help you a little bit since it will download the A-GPS XTRA Data (works better and faster if you do it while using Wi-Fi) that will help GPS to lock faster and get accurate positioning while on the road, it will last some days but it is not a definitive solution.
I still researching on knowing more about how "GPS Static Navigation" works in our phone, I even opened a question discussion about it @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1940294
Please let me know if some of you know more about this,
Thanks, and hope this give you a bit more insights about it!

I agree that it's possibly your GPS at fault. I've tried multiple ROMs (using Jedi Mind Trick X now) and have always very fast GPS lock and great accuracy when using ICS ROMs.

[Q] Can't get good GPS fix (in US)?

Not sure what it is, but I haven't been able to get a solid GPS fix since I got the phone. Any other phone I use may take a minute, but it'll get a pretty accurate fix afterward - 50 feet or less. And this is in the same exact place.
I sat with the phone and the GPS Test app by Chartcross initially, and had 24 satellites in view. I went and downloaded FasterGPS and updated the GPS for US servers (since the Mini came from France I believe), and now I can get between 3 and 6 in use, but it only locks very rarely, and even when it does, it's only to like 500 feet in accuracy. As I'm typing, it randomly jumped to 7 satellites, accuracy bounced between 200 and 300 feet...and a few seconds later it went back to no lock and going between 3 and 6 in use.
Suggestions? I already rooted the phone, as well as installed Xposed and Crossbreeder. And of course, I have all proper GPS settings turned on.
EDIT: I went and did that simple fix all around the web of tightening the screws...didn't seem to help much. I went outside, and had no problem getting like 20/23 satellites, accuracy to like 5 feet. But as I go inside, I lose accuracy/satellites, until I get to my apartment and have nothing again. Is the S4 Mini's GPS antennae just weaker than other's?

Nope, always used data for the phones. And even using Wifi on the S4 Mini doesn't seem to help in terms of a GPS fix.
I've noticed on all 3 android phones I've had, that gps generally doesn't work indoors.
I did get a faster fix outdoors using the app GPS Status and updating the A-GPS data from within the Tools menu.
You should also try moving in one direction as you are trying to get a fix outdoors - always works for me.

Speed up GPS sync?

Hello
I'd like to get started contributing to OpenStreetMap using my Galaxy Nexus running the stock 4.2.1 (JOP40D.I9250XWMA2).
I keep the GPS feature disabled because it drains the battery, but it can take several minutes to sync up while in the city before I can take a picture and have it tagged with the location
What could I try to speed things up? Connect an external (A)GPS chip through the USB port? Move to CyanogenMod?
Thank you.

I think move to a custom rom cant speed up your gps.
But an external GPS can help you.
At least part of the problem is that you keep the GPS off normally. So every time you turn it on, it has to obtain a cold start, which takes a lot longer than a hot start. Leave the GPS on and it should obtain a fix much faster.
Leaving the GPS toggled on in Android does not mean it's being utilized. If it's not being utilized, it's not draining battery. If it's being utilized, you should see the GPS icon in your notification bar.
It's been a long standing myth that leaving it toggled off magically saves battery. If leaving it toggled on is draining your battery when you're not using it, you have a rogue app that is using the GPS.

Thanks for the tip. I moved from stock Android to Cyanogenmod over the week-end, and will give Fasterfix a shot.
BTW, recently, while still using Android 4.2.1 and travelling to a neighboring European country, even after connecting to a local wifi hotspot and using GPS Status' Reset + Download features, I noticed two issues:
GPS didn't lock for hours even while being outside the whole time
When it did lock, it didn't keep track and was stuck where it was
As a result, GPS was pretty much useless.
What could be the cause for this? Aren't AGPS data supposed to let me lock faster? Will Fasterfix solve the issue?
Thank you.
