[Q] Slow wake after encryption? - Verizon HTC One (M7)

Ever since I decided to encrypt my phone (about a month ago), it feels like it's taken a nosedive in performance. Moving around homescreens has gotten far less smooth, Google Now can sometimes take up to five seconds to launch, and there will sometimes even be a delay between when I press the power button and when the damn screen actually comes on.
I don't know why encryption would be to blame, since my understanding was it should only cause overhead during the initial bootup/shutdown when the volume is being decrypted, but I can't think of anything else I have installed to account for the increasing sluggishness. I've even gone through and deleted any apps that I see in the Running Apps section that aren't absolutely essential (not counting the stock crap that I can't disable). I'm not sure what else to check--being completely stock, I can't install many of the monitoring or other tools I might be able to use if rooted.
Any suggestions? Short of wiping my phone and going back to no encyrption, obviously.

I see the exact same behavior. This happened when I first encrypted it ~6-8 months ago, after getting frustrated with it I reset the phone and the performance issues went away. I recently enabled encryption again when traveling internationally and the hitches came back again.
As far as I can tell it's entirely an encryption issue and not due to any other apps or anything The encryption isn't a startup/shutdown thing, it's always on, basically a layer between the storage and the system that decrypts the data whenever you read and encrypts it whenever you write. While it's generally not free, the overhead should only be a few %, maybe it's not prioritizing the encryption process correctly?
Unfortunately I don't have a solution other than to reset your phone to disable the encryption.

Well, that blows. I appreciate your confirming my suspicion. I may have to try a reformat then once I can get a no root required backup.
Google said that Android L will include encryption by default. Maybe when they do they'll find a way to keep the device encrypted without so much overhead.
Sent from my HTC One

Tangentially related, but would having an encrypted phone now inhibit the ability to receive the eventual L OTA when Verizon decides to push it? Performance concerns notwithstanding, I am debating encrypting my phone but I have read conflicting accounts of whether or not I would be able to upgrade via OTA as a result.

[Q] Phone freezes and is slow after all kinds of troubleshooting

Hello,
I've done lots of searching for answers to my questions here and elsewhere and come up empty-handed, so I apologize if I've missed something and this has been covered already.
My phone occasionally runs smoothly and fast, like it's supposed to. More often -- pretty much every time I need to interact with the phone and across all apps I use -- it freezes when I tap on something, whether it's to open an app or interact with an app that's already running. It will completely freeze up for anywhere from five to 15 seconds before reacting, and it's extremely frustrating at times. Sometimes, the screen will time out before I can enter my PIN to unlock it; sometimes when somebody calls and I tap "answer," the phone doesn't react fast enough to actually answer and I miss the call. As I said, very frustrating. It did this both before the update to Lollipop last week, and after.
Here's what I've tried: Hard reset; restarting; deleting or disabling all the apps (including Blinkfeed) I thought I safely could, usually just one or two at a time. I've run it in safe mode, and the phone works normally that way -- I just can't figure out what's making it freeze up. I've run a CPU monitor program, and haven't seen any huge spikes from any apps; and according to the app manager in settings, I typically have about 1G of RAM free.
I'm very hesitant to root the phone, mostly because this is a warranty replacement for a Verizon M7 I had rooted (and returned to stock), and none of the ROMs I tried with the previous phone worked well -- if at all -- with the security policies I am required to use to log in to my employer's Exchange server. Those policies include data encryption.
I'm running stock Lollipop 5.0.2 and Sense 6.0 on Build number 6.22.605.3, Baseband 1.13.41.1209.
If anybody has ideas for me to try, I'd greatly appreciate it. My upgrade date is late August of this year, but it's getting harder and harder to live with this phone, which I absolutely need for my work.
Thank you very much in advance.
It's been a month now since the Lollipop update. I have read through a few threads about performance issues in general after the update. I am going to assume that your phone too has become a victim of the update. I have NOT updated to Lollipop. Mainly because of my recent root and install of TWRP custom recovery, EX Kernel and ViperROM 7.0.2. If these issues aren't resolved, I will not update. Besides, KitKat is doing great for me. I would suspect certain services not running in safe mode that allow the phone to react normally as opposed to all services running in normal mode. Have you contacted VZN and/or HTC for possible t/sing solutions? I see that you have done what I would've done. After failing I would assume it is because of the Lollipop update

Help backing up 32gb Nexus 7 2013 with 100mb free.

BACKGROUND:
I have a 32GB Nexus 7 which has been plagued with a variety of issues ever since updating to lollipop at the beginning of this year. Previously it worked really well and ran like glass, no hiccups. When I say lollipop brought the plague, I mean bubonic levels of lag and bugs - 15 seconds to return to home screen, constant crashes, less than 5-7fps on transitions and scrolling, and so on. It runs so slow that sometimes it's impossible to type text. Typing in a web-field can lag up to 15-20 seconds, no joke. It hangs, randomly restarts and takes an outrageously painful 5-10 minutes to boot. Apps randomly shut down causing push notifications to stop working. Using it went from a pleasant and snappy experience, to feeling like being pimp slapped by Google every time I try getting something done. Imagine trying to check into a hotel with an online reservation, when your device randomly shuts down and takes 10 minutes to boot up again. This is only one example of the lollipop curse I've endured this past year.
Basically, it has become near useless on every level and so undependable that it can't even be trusted as an alarm clock. For a dose of perspective, my nook simple touch e-ink tablet feels faster. I've booted into recovery mode, cleared the system cache, disabled all but a couple apps from starting on boot, and other fixes, nothing has helped in the slightest. One theory I have is that I had xposed installed prior to lollipop, and I forgot about it (as I haven't really used it except to test out a multitasking module which I uninstalled). After updating xposed refuses to update or uninstall. As far as the eMMC being full as a cause for the issues, all I can say is I had about 5GB of space left when I updated 10 or so months ago.
Anyway, now to the hopeful solution:
I need to completely wipe everything and go back to 4.4.4. However, I have about 400 apps and 100mb free space on a 32gb nexus. How can I be sure to back up all my directory data and app data? The space is split between app data, random documents and other small media. I don't have any large files on the device (99% under 5mb each).
I have titanium backup, which I was able to successfully run a backup on all the apps and app data (hopefully) using a 16gb thumb drive. However, this seems useless for backing up all the data/downloads/media/etc. in directories. Ideally I'd like to take something like a macrium reflect image of everything before I wipe everything. Any ideas?
Also, I had tried to set up avast anti-theft, but the setup never worked and I couldn't register on avast.com. When I tried uninstalling the avast rootkit thing I got an error, and then I just uninstalled avast completely. Not sure if that makes a difference or if Avast still has some kind of low level bug on the system that is causing problems.

New recalled Note 7 - Issues with Media/Lag/Wifi/Heat

Hey all,
I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with my Note 7 (recall replacement one).
1. It lags like HELL! I've done all the animation scaling off/force GPU rendering etc, but I shouldn't have to. Just a simple thing like pulling down the notification bar noticeably lags every couple of times.
2. I use Android Auto, which I always have to reconnect manually to use (never did on the S7).
3. When listening to Spotify over Android Auto, I occasionally get stutter/glitches in the sound. Once the glitch was so bad the phone froze and it had to be reset.
4. The thing gets hot. Annoyingly hot, even if I'm just browsing Chrome, or reading G-mail etc. It's not like I'm gaming!!
5. WiFi is very sporadic. The connection is rock solid, but often it will be downloading an app...sit at 100% of download and progress no further. This happens quite frequently.
With all the above, (bar number 2), none of it applied to the pre-recalled Note 7.
I'm frustrated to say the least. Does anyone else get any of this whatsoever? I can't go through not having a phone again, or sending this for what Samsung will insist on a repair. This phone is jinxed and I'm gutted.
Any suggestions (bar a hard reset haha) will be greatly received.
PS. I have disabled loads of apps with the AppDisabler to try and help it along but I think there's an issue with the RAM or some of the internal modules (at a guess). Thanks all
I have just managed to reduce the lag quite a bit by uninstalling Samsung Good Lock (which was forced upon me earlier today)! I liked it, but serious lag creation!
Did you use Smart Switch to change phones? I've found quite a few apps don't like to be transferred. Android Auto apps don't move right via Smart Switch and I had to uninstall/reinstall them.
Be careful what you disable. Some of Samsung's seemingly benign system apps are called by other apps and if they don't respond are constantly polled. That could cause a lot of background processes and may be a source of your overheating. My pre-exchange phone did what you're describing the first couple of days after I set it up. It would maybe once or twice a day get blocky when scrolling as if something was running in the background. The (U.S.) PH1 update made it go away. But we're S-820 in the U.S. and I think you guys are Exynos. So different problems different solutions.
Thanks for your reply Barry. Actually not Smart Switch, but I let it restore my 100+ apps from my previous Note 7 (near the end of the initial set up). The apps were downloading but strangely, every so often nothing was happening after they'd reached 100% downloaded, just before "installing..." (over WiFi). I cancelled that specific app and the restore continued (this happened over and over). Turning WiFi on and off sorted it temporarily but I couldn't download more than 3/4 without this really strange issue.
I also observed the longest lag ever! I went into the OS update screen, pressed update and the device didn't respond. 5 mins later while doing something completely different, the update screen popped up about 12 times (as I'd pressed it 12 times 5 mins previously). This happened again after a reboot too!
Now, I've just bitten the bullet and performed a hard reset. This time the WiFi seems great, although now I'm speculating that it was getting stuck at 100% post download perhaps because the security thing was having trouble scanning it for malware prior to install.
I also take your note re:disabling stuff! I'm going to do something unheard of and just try it stock for a bit and see how it goes. For such amazing hardware, the fact my note 3 was running 10 times smoother means something drastic is going on. I hope this hard reset is the end of it!
Chances are the hard reset won't do anything, though I hope you have better luck than I did. I went through three phones (on my 4th). I did the hard reset as soon as I picked up the 2nd handset and onward before I did anything with the phone. Sadly you should not have to disable anything, the phone should just work for 900.00. Some will say otherwise.. Wi-FI is good for me but the reception is garbage. On various phones with T-MO including other android devices that colleagues have - they get 4/5 bars and usually double the download speed on Speedtest. The head I had on the first I don't get as bad on this one. But the lag I do...
Did you get the update from your provider as well?
I just picked up my replacement Sprint Note7 today so not much time with it though seems identical except 1 small issue. I had my first Note 7 rooted, Viper4Android and Dolby Atmos flashed along with Xposed and it worked flawlessly. The replacement Note fails with binary invalid using the exact same odin version, Sun7 systemless root etc that I have on my pc from the first Note 7 and the second Note 7 was given to me not updated, in other words its on the exact same firmware as the first one!
I am very proficient with rooting, adb, etc and this has me baffled.
Has anyone successfully rooted a replacement N930p that came with PH9? using freeza's guide?

Yea disabling seems like a great idea at first but it actually creates problems. I run it completely as is except uninstalling the preloaded games. Didnt disable anything. Disabling stuff caused massive lag on my note 5 and same with note 7.
Thanks chaps.
I've gotta say, the hard reset has made the world of difference. Which to me is strange, I've never had to hard reset a new device, but it's done the trick.
Regarding the disabling of services, there must be *some* that are safe to disable? I agree if you're tinkering with potentially integral things like S-Voice it's not a good idea. But then stuff like OneDrive surely that's okay? Maybe, things like the Disabler package are a bad plan. You can disable software by default without it, but only certain apps. Maybe that's why Samsung prevent the disabling of certain bloat...?

I only disable the useless apps, such as all the Microsoft bloat (OneDrive, Excel, Word, etc), Facebook (and all its services), and any Carrier bloat.

Disabling facebook services will broke gear VR.
It's a tricky one! I guess it's a bit of trial and error.

That's cool. I have no interest in Gear VR.
I have heard somethings about latest version of chrome causing batt drain, could possibly contribute to lag also, I cant tell much as I am expecting my note 7 exchange, but I have seen some posting about it
Have no problems when I used package disabler and chose "disable all bloat"...but after doing that, I looked through the list and enabled around 3 to 5 that I thought didn't need disabling.
No problems since.
Oh...that option doesn't disable facebook, messenger, hangouts etc. So if you don't use those, you need to add them.
Thanks all. Well, after all that, and a hard reset my phone is running perfectly again. Then, this morning I received this from Oculus...
"We recently pushed an Oculus Software update that has inadvertently caused some people to experience phone performance issues."
I haven't put my phone into my Gear VR since the hard reset and I can almost guarantee it was that blimmin thing. Samsung have also updated their Good Lock app to remove lag yesterday!
Damn you Oculus!
Oh..and strangely, the first few hours I got the phone..it got pretty hot...especially since I was using it while charging. I turned off fast charging and no difference. Anyways I just cooled it down w the aircon now and then.
Long story short, it doesn't get hot anymore.
Maybe it's because I used package disabler snd greenify...but whatever I do...Even while charging..it barely gets warm...
Shrugs

Yea they always get very hot for the first few hours while installing all the new apps! I'm not sure you need Greenify these days do you, since android tends to close apps that are not in use (giving you the same options as Greenify)?

This. I just spent two days doing that and its like a totally different phone. I started a thread highlighting my experiences.
i am quite annnoyed with the lag too. it's nothing too bad, but there's noticeable keyboard lag, and whenever you go into settings to search for something, it takes like two seconds to load. i don't even think this is a case by case situation here, this phone just isn't as fast as a oneplus 3, lg g5 or iphone 7 plus. again, it's not terrible, it's just not the fastest or smoothest.

No response bugs

Some background info.
I bought my pixel XL from the Google store and I believe it came with the 63L build out of the box. I have since made it a point to completely wipe and fastboot flash the latest image Everytime an update is release, right now I am on the 26U build. The only thing I have done to my phone (and these bugs happen before and after) is bootloader unlock and root.
The bugs.
Every once in a while, my volume controls will quit working. I notice it happen more if I cast to my Chromecast and play a song or video (seperate) on my device. I'll hit the volume button and literally nothing will happen. To fix this I usually have to turn the display off, wait a few seconds, wake it back up, then the controls work fine again. I do not believe it is a hardware issue because i can fix it Everytime it happens.
The second bug, probably the most annoying, is that my nav bar will become completely unresponsive occasionally while in landscape orientation. Say I'm watching a video on YouTube in full screen, if I swipe to pull out my nav bar and hit the home/recent/back button, nothing will happen. I will see the animation however no vibration (feedback) or a action occurs.
This happens in games, YouTube, web browsers, doesn't matter as long as my phone is in landscape mode. Also note that when this happens, my device refuses to rotate back to portrait. This leaves my only solution (same as the volume bug) to turn off the display, wait a few seconds, and then I back on. Sometimes, however, this don't even work, and I'll have to jump straight to settings from my lockscreen to force the phone to portrait where the functionality of the nav bar returns.
I've contacted google, they run me through the typical steps "delete cache, have you tried a reset, update to the latest software", but nothing fixes it. They have told me repetitively it's not a common problem and it's not a problem that's worth rma'ing over.
I've been discovering my pixel has many small issues that no one else has. Such as the horrible transfer speed explain in my earlier thread, these bugs above, refusing to charge when the device is off, etc.
Has anyone had similar problems?
@noidea24,
I've had none of those issues. In fact, my Pixel XL has been flawless.
Not good. I guess I'm going to try and force a RMA.

Sorry to nit, but when I read the statement above I can't help but wonder if you actually did a factory reset. Reason I say that is you stated "have you tried a reset" and you didn't explicitly state that you did.
I kind of doubt the responsiveness stuff you're referring to is hardware related, it's probably software.
Whether or not a rogue app is affecting your device or a root app is impossible to determine without doing a factory reset and carefully adding one app/change at a time until the problem comes back. It's a PITA but that's what I'd do first to rule out hardware, and I'd simply run email and messaging apps unrooted for at least 24 hours to rule out hardware issues before I start loading up my favorite apps.

A factory reset is far from a pain in the ass, and yes, i have done it many times. the only things that makes it suck is when i have to transfer files back to my device because (as mentioned) i have terrible transfer speed from pc to device.
i have literally done everything i can to make this devices worth the price, and things are only getting worse. Since the post (later that night) i factory flashed once again, and re locked the bootloader. No root, No extra apps, hell, the only apps i had on my phone to begin with were facebook messenger, and that pixel car racer, i dont use anything else. ive had an even worse bug come in where my phone completely freezes when opening google camera and swiping to the video section. ill have to hold power until it force resets.
ive been with xda since my Motorola droid, Ive built roms for the community for my lg g2 and my nexus 6. hell, i even built kernels for my 5x (not public), so im a little past your average user complaining about some things that dont work due to user error. these are legitimate device flaws and malfunctions, and i was simply asking if anyone else has experienced them. and since it seems no one has, i have deemed my device faulty. now i have to come up with $600 for a service hold to get it replaced.
My experience with Googles first official flag ship has been pathetic, and im hoping that this replacement device i get (eventually) will persuade me not to go back to my 6p.
Well if that's the case then yeah I hope a replacement device will solve your issues. Sounds like it will.
Didn't mean to rile you up, just looking for clarity.
Good luck!

Bluetooth on by default at first boot up?!?!?! Need Input

Can you tell me if bluetooth is ON or OFF by default at startup after a factory reset? I swear that it was off the first time I booted up but now it is on. Makes me wonder if it was infected or changed. Anyone know if the default was changed? Thanks

Bluetooth may or may not be "on" but it should not be "connected" or "remember" any devices if you did a factory reset.
However, without wiping internal SD and data, you are subject to "potential weird things" that can happen.
It's why I never report a bug unless I made absolutely sure to wipe data and internal SD before trying to reproduce an issue.
Bluetooth has been turned on by default for all the software versions I've used.
Upon a factory flash or reset, Bluetooth will be enabled but no devices will connect/be remembered.
On a side note, No application can "infect" an android. Most of these antivirus applications are complete bullcrap. Dont get me wrong, there are some dangerous apps out there, but you would still have to give the app permissions and accessibility access For it to do any damage. even then, simply uninstalling them Will remove everything.
Thanks for your responses. I do appreciate it. Well, unfortunately I have had multiple phones infected by ex-neighbors. I literally would lose control over the phone and during calls they would make beeping sounds like I had hit a key. Once I flashed my phone outside of town and they kept messing with it. I had always thought they had a tool which enables persistence even through flashing, but it may be that they are using Signaling System 7 (SS7) and are just reinfecting them remotely. (you can watch a 60 minute special on SS7 if u like, available online) They were using an IMSI catcher when I lived next door to them. With the Pixel XL I was having ALOT of data use and reset the phone after some weird stuff happened that I had come to recognize as likely signs of being compromised, and I think put in a new SIM with a new phone #. It was much better after that. It was a nightmare with them and one of them even followed me home after work a month after I moved away. Not to mention steal things like laundry soap and put them on their side of the street in front of my house. Creeps. At this point it is just pathetic and weird. Just trying to take reasonable precautions now and live my life. If they want to waste their time that is sad.
Really glad to hear the bluetooth being there is not a deviance from default. Thanks
