simple answer. if the device is carrier locked, you can only use a sim for that carrier (without unlocking).
if the device is unlocked, you can use any compatible sim.

Hi there, welcome to the forums. Your answer is yes, you can flash your device if it is sim unlock. Just to let you know, if you flash it will not sim unlock your device. Follow the following link to flash your device: Flashing your excalibur for noobs
thanks for the answer. im confused, did you mean sim locked or unlocked?

You don't have to buy an unlock code to get it rooted. You can use a goldcard and root it. It's free

will a golden card and rooting it allow me to sim unlock ? cuz i have been reading about it and its ambigous, i think it`s impossible to sim unlock without a an unlock code.
Rooting wont unlock the phone, no.
But you can use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943726 . It is free and works, you dont need to root or anything.

Goldcard is for branded RUUs only. In Romania there are no phones with branded RUUs, all of them have stock. They're network locked not branded. Use sieempi's utility, I've unlocked my phone locked by Orange Romania.
Edit: didn't read the post carefully enough. It appears from the RUU thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667 that Orange France doesn't have a branded RUU either. So you should't have to make a goldcard.

i have never unlocked a phone easier ! thank you very much for your reply !

So I've heard about bootloader unlocking which, I guess, enables me to have full control over the device (not like rooting, I understand that) and to do stuff like flashing new ROMs, etc.
But what about network unlocking? I mean, I'd like to be able to use my phone on any network I wish, do I need to unlock the bootloader for that? Do the network restrictions automatically disappear if I unlock the bootloader?
Also, is there anyway I can disable network restrictions by myself (without using something like a special SIM card or asking for remote unlocking) without having to pay for any unlocking service or ask someone to do it for me?
Thanks in advance! :3

Hi, so to answer your question, when you unlock the bootloader the sim lock remains, also afaik there are no "free" ways in which to remove the sim lock at this moment in time, the only way is to get the unlock code from your service provider or pay a remote unlocking service.
I think i may have seen on the arc forum somewhere for a small fee you can get your boot loader unlocked and sim unlocked at the same time.
One last note if your arc is sim locked there is a chance that you wont be able to unlock the bootloader via sony ericsson developer world, depending on your carrier

That means it's also possible to unlock the boot loader remotely?
Also, if there's someone who can do it for us (small fees inc.), that means there's actually a way to do it, right?

Yes there is a way to do it, i cant remember how much it costs exactly, but it's done remotely and sim unlocks and boot loader unlocks at the same time
And is it something I can do by myself?

If someone else can do this as a paid service. Why can't someone explain how its done and make it available for free?

As for that i cannot answer.. But at a guess a lot of hard work will have gone into this. It keeps drm intact, provides Sim unlock and enables fast boot on handsets which didn't have it before, if i was in that situation with my arc i would have gladly paid, and i myself think the Dev/Devs are entitled to some hard earned cash

you can't...you would need S-OFF to change the CID
You need to buy an unlock code from eBay or somewhere like that, put another SIM card into your phone, and when it says enter unlock code, then put in the code.
CID has nothing to do with carrier unlock, CID just determines what updates you get, and a branded phone has to have an update modified by the carrier before pushing it to their handsets.

Hi,
I got a Z1 compact and I need to remove the Simlock to use a SIM card from another carrier.
After reading a lot of other posts I'm assuming that I need to unlock the bootloader to do that.
The problem is, that the service info says that the bootloder unlock is not allowed..
Is there any possibility to unlock the bootloader anyway?
Thank you for any helpful answers.

There has been no exploit found yet
No. And will probably never happen either.

You don't need to unlock the bootloader to unlock the SIM. Those are 2 different unlocks.
