[Q] Custom Recovery on Rogers S3 4.4.2 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi, my apologies if this has been asked before, but I am not having any luck on flashing a custom recovery on a Galaxy S3 with Rogers. It's on the NF2 build. By the looks of it, it appears to have KNOX on it. I've tried flashing TWRP via Odin, and it reboots and says "Pass!", but when I boot into recovery it's still the stock recovery. Is flashing a custom recovery still possible? Could KNOX be preventing me from flashing a recovery?
Thanks.

You updated by ota. When you do it has two files that reinstall stock recovery every time you boot.
In check auto reboot in Odin. After flashing pull the battery. Then boot recovery.
Or if you're already rooted, delete or rename these
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
/system/recovery-from-boot.p

Ahh, that has to be it since my dad was the one who used this phone before he got his Galaxy S5 yesterday, so he must've downloaded the update OTA. Will definitely try that one out now. Maybe I can finally upgrade from my S II, haha. Thanks!

[Q] Root for Samsung GS3 on stock 4.1.1?

Hi,
I recently bought the Samsung Galaxy S3 on T-Mobile, to replace my Motorola Droid X on Verizon. Love the new phone, but miss my root capabilities - aka there's a bunch of bloat. There's an OTA not being forced for 4.1.1, but when I tried to root that, I soft bricked and got stuck in a boot loop at the pulsing Samsung. I grabbed ODIN and was able to push the stock 4.0.4 back into it and get it working again, baseband T999UVLH2, Kernel 3.0.8-925100, build IMM76D.T999UVALH2. Is there a way to root this phone, or a stock rooted ROM I could push up with ODIN?
I'm not looking to load custom ROM's, just have some of the abilities I had on my DX when it was rooted and get rid of some of the stock crap that I don't need.
I originally tried to do this with Samsung Galaxy S3 Toolkit v6.0, and soft bricked the phone. I followed the directions online, and did it as instructed, but yeah. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
All you need to root is the touch 6.0 clockwork mod recovery tar file which is available on xda as zip file and the odin version 3+ and follow instructions thats all thats needed to root, make sure you also put the superuser app inside the root of your sd card meaning connect your galaxy s3 to computer then open the root sd card and put it inside there, i believe there is a clockwordmod touch that already comes with superuser so you may not have to worry about putting superuser in root. here i'll grab links for you now. u dont checkmark anything on odin except select pda and browse for the tar file. Here is guide for your device with download links.
The clockworkmod touch recovery version is by far best and always works well with almost all roms.
I would also recomend you use liquidsmooth rom or if you want to test out the new android 4.2 cm but camera doesn't work on 4.2 cm10.1 now however it's a very nice custom rom
Btw, make sure you flash the superuser.zip file that you placed in your sd card while you are in clockwork mod recovery otherwise you wont comlete the root. to get into cwm you gotta hold volume up home button and power button at same time.

Thanks to both of you, I'm rooted, exactly the way I wanted to be. I couldn't get CWM to flash in stock recovery, nor could I get Root66 to flash in recovery, so I just pushed it with Odin. All I need to do now is get CWM Touch on it, and I'll be set. I'm reinstalling my root apps as we speak.
Thanks again!
Odin cf auto root is the quickest and simplest.

Flash cwm via Odin uncheck auto reboot. Then go straight to recovery then reboot. I'd wipe cache and dalvik while in there though.

[Q] Soft Bricked Note 2 Verizon. HELP! URGENT!

I am not new to rooting and flashing rom however, I switched from my rooted GS3 running CM11 to the Note 2. I flashed the stock firmware (root66) and made the mistake of running the OTA 4.1.2 update which caused my note to be soft bricked. The phone boots to the samsung logo and freezes there. I flashed several stock firmware using odin that pass but when my phone reboots it freezes at the samsung logo. I can not access recovery mode, only downloading mode. I know its a way to fix this I'm just not sure how. Any suggestions?

Easy peasy, flash philz v5.00.5 (not the latest) through odin then u should be able to access recovery, from recovery flash a custom ROM so u can get unstuck, then when everything is fine, flash a stock rom from sammobile and hopefully it should work.

Smack the thanks if I helped.

You're supposed to root the phone first, then flash custom recovery.

Lol, im trying that right now!
Phils recovery has a root and custom recovery in one that can be flashed with odin. Because you have done the 4.3 ota you will probably have to deal with knox now. Dr ketans guides are really helpful, you need to know what bootloader you have now.

I did it!
The solution is TO READ! What i didnt do completly
The problem was with the recovery restore files that were present. I manged to rename those files, root it and install twrp with the SkipSoft toolkit.

[Q] S3 locked after 4.4.2 OTA

Here is what happened, i downloaded the OTA from AT&T, unrooted my phone and installed the update. It went all the way through, rebooted and that's where it stops. As soon as the AT&T welcome screen comes up the phone just freezes. When i plug it to my PC the phone is not recognized. Kies says it can't connect to the device. I'm able to get into download mode and odin seems to find the phone. But in download mode there is no option to reboot or anything. It only says "custom" on all options.
Can anybody help?
Factory reset usually solves most boot hangups. It will wipe your internal sd if you have stock recovery though.
i can't find any option to do a factory reset. I flashed Philz touch with odin, it said it passed. Tried a factory reset but it still freezes at the AT&T homescreen.
Any other way to do a factory reset?
Why'd you re-root BEFORE installing the update? Is there a particular reason? From what I've read on here, towelroot will easily root it afterwards.

I took root off the phone since most of the time root stops OTA updates. Then i downloaded and installed the update. I had plans to root it again after the update.
Hello there. I also attempted the 4.4.2 OTA from stock 4.3, and now I'm having this exact same issue. The device had TWRP recovery installed, so I re-installed the stock recovery. It was also rooted and a few system files were edited (lock sounds, hosts file), I reverted all the changes, did a full unroot via SuperSU and proceeded with the OTA. It seemed successful until it tried to boot.. it now freezes on the AT&T logo, as the OP mentioned. I installed TWRP recovery again via Odin so I could back up all the data from the phone and do a factory reset. Unfortunately, this did not fix the freezing. I've attempted reverting back to the latest official Odin .tar (4.1.1), which I've now learned is not possible since the 4.3 update and its locked bootloader. It would seem that the only thing that would do the trick now would be an Odin-flashable 4.4.2 tar. For now, I've installed CyanogenMod as a temporary solution.
I dunno if it has been tested yet but this is a TWRP/CWM flashable zip which also preserves root.

It didnt work. I am currently uploading two more attempts now and will post the links in that thread as soon as they are ready.

Hi All, Just wanted to share a solution that worked for me. I was in the same boat. OTA update locked phone on ATT screen. Used steps 2 and 6 from link below and now have 4.4.2 running on my phone. Happy flashing.

No ability to root custom recovery

I'm kinda stumped. I've been doing this stuff for awhile: vibrant, s2, s4, note 4,.... but for the life of me, I can get the sm-p600 rooted with a custom recovery. I tried to root awhile back and tripped knox so i couldn't get any ota updates. Currently running 4.4.2 on ND4. Tried a bunch of different methods to root. nothing. Tried to odin twrp and it won't boot up. Tried to odin root... nothing.
What am i missing?

Use Odin and use CF-AutoRoot then use Flashify to flash TWRP.
LiquidSmooth maintainer for d2usc/vzw & p600
I've done that. Finally got to custom recovery, but my root never sticks.
got it
that was a pain in the butt. I updated firmware to COB1, then flash root. FINALLY got it. The latest twrp and got a "downloading" boot loop, wouldn't boot into system. flashed twrp via odin and it took and got me out of the bootloop. Finally rooted with custom recovery,... I think the problem had to be ND2 firmware.
Yeah. I updated before rooting.
