Root kf hd 8.9 1st gen 8.4.9 - 8.9" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a kindle fire hd 8.9 first generation running 8.4.9 how can I safely and easily root it it's the 30 gig if that matters. I paid 400 so I really don't want to brick this thing I'm not really sure of the difference between the 1st gen and the 2nd gen but I know mine is the first gen because I bought it when it first came out and because the power and volume are on the side not the back

I also have a Kindle Fire HD 8.9.I downloaded latest update.bin file (8.4.9) from Amazon and updated my Kindle and later rooted it using the manual method described in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069117 thread. It was total success. Just don't miss a single step from that (MANUAL) method.
One thing is confirmed here, KFFirstAid can easily install Google Play after 8.4.9 update and the above mentioned manual method can root it successfully. I am not sure about automatic method though.
If there is any confusion in following the steps you can ask.

Do you have the 1st gen or 2nd gen I think 1st gen had a different boot loader or something. I rooted my phone but I'm real paranoid about bricking this thing. I really can't afford a new one

I used some German guy's walkthrough here: http://www.dreamcodes.biz/text/?id=2152&s=read
The main problem was (as before): Not seeing the Kindle in adb devices. Don't ask what I did to finally get there after about 5 hours of trying every option under the sun and googling half the Inet. I installed way more drivers than recommended, especially google ones.
Install everything in c:\username\androidfilename; make sure the path is in system properties, constant testing (adb devices), making sure I have an adb_usb.ini with a 0x1949 in it, and the actual Amazon Kindle drivers are installed (I had to do that manually). Only when the Kindle was found I moved on to root and was successful first time. One happy camper here for sure.
Thanks Red for trying to help a blonde gal! Much appreciated!
So........... what am I going to do with my Kindle now?! :victory:

OK, the post you are talking about in German is post no 744 on page no 75, you need to go to page no 1 of that (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069117&page=75) thread. Follow upto Root Step 9 (adding path variable) than use manual method to root. The main problem every one is likely to face is getting adb communication working so first assure that. Read a lot, clear every doubt. There may be some steps which can be confusing but I can help you in their clarification. I now have CM11 installed on my Kindle 8.9.
One thing for sure success DO NOT PROCEED UNTIL EVERYTHING DOES NOT WORK AS ACCEPTED IN THE METHOD.

Any expert wants to help out those have updated their kindle fire to 6.2.1?
My coworker bought a Kindle Fire for his mother and want's me to prepare it for her as a Christmas gift (she wants Android so we decided to install the Android Market). I took it home the other day and noticed a message saying that it was updating itself. The system version says "6.2_user_3003020"
Is this 6.2.1? It's doesn't say 6.2.0, so I don't want to make any assumptions.
have u tried zergrush from this post? not sure if its the same exploit or not, but try it

That is version 6.2
You need to make sure that WiFi is OFF until you protect it from getting further updates. There are a number of theads on how to do that.
o Modified hosts file to block: 127.0.0.1 s3.amazonaws.com
o Installed TWRP 2.0, FIREFIREFIRE and u-boot (was done via a package)
o Renamed /system/app/OTASilentInstall.apk to /system/app/OTASilentInstall.apk.bak
Any of which will prevent further updates. You needed to be rooted to do any of these however. One method that people are using is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
Still, an exploit needs to be found for stock KF that will be coming with 2.6.1 and higher. I'm pretty sure we are going to be able to download and patch future stock Roms for those that don't want to go to cm7 or cm9 when it is ready.
And for people like me who had root, and got the silent update, not thinking I would lose root!
ATM, my guess is that a factory cable is required to put it into fastboot to restore root.
Yes, I would think Vashypooh is right. If you can get fastboot access, one could possibly gainroot, or maybe flash an already rooted Rom.
Have anybody tried to remove the OTASilenInstaller.apk from the system/app?
Aw damnit, it just updated on me. So I can't reroot using the old methods?

No, nothing works at this point, until someone figures out a new way to gain root. No telling how long that could take. I'll say one thing, I'm putting CM7 on mine as soon as I get it rerooted. I don't like having a surprise lockdown on my device.

I bought two KFs for my kids, rooted, adw, happened, twrm. Froze otainstall.apk and one updated.
At least market still works and adw is still default.
Bummer is that I helplessly watched twrm flash the update.

Kindle Fire demo model

I bought a Kindle Fire off Craigslist and got home and realized I had been had and was sold a demonstration model. I'm hoping by rooting the Kindle I can possibly reverse this. I followed all the instructions in death2all110's thread but the first step I can not perform because when I try to go into settings I get a message saying "demonstration device this feature is not available" This is the step that allows you to sideload. Is there another way that I can sideload? Even if I am able to sideload, do you think this will fix my problem? Please help.

This, don't keep stolen property. Contact the seller and get your money back or call the police. It should be easy to track down which store it was stolen from.

10.2.5???

Hi all,
I normally live over on the Xperia Arc forum but I have been trying to root my mums Kindle.
Last time I looked it was on 10.2.4 which, as far as I have read, is rootable.
However last night I checked the version again just before I commenced rooting and it was on 10.2.5!
I cant seem to find any reference of .5 anywhere.
Even on amazons website the latest update says 10.2.4
I tried the root methods but it didnt work unfortunately...
Any ideas? Anyone else been updated to .5 and successfully rooted?

I literally cannot find a reference to it, and dont understand why the amazon website hasnt even documented it!

I will check back in a few days maybe, to see if others have been cursed with this.

You could definitely restore to a rooted 10.2.4 if you had a fastboot cable...
This works for 10.2.4
I found the solution! If you try and install superuser.apk directly by copying over to downloads and clicking on it, it works. Then simply grant ES File Explorer su permissions and click to mount the file system.
Idk why it worked, but if it doesn't, try using Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v1**8 & QemuRoot combination. When you get permission denied, make sure you run it again and press 3 to jump steps, but make sure you run step 4 or your device will remain sluggish
If that doesn't work try this: Rooted 10.2.4
Hopefully after running the tf101 file and qemu you can manually install superuser.apk from the sdcard. If it worked make sure you mount the filesystem with ES, because tthe shell wont work. Next, make sure to rename /system/etc/security/otacerts.****(zip) so that the next software update wont deroot you.
Last week my kindle fire 2 randomly update to 10.2.5 after I had rooted it with root many android, by bin4ry and qemu root.
I decided I would try the root many android method again last night to try and re-root the device and it worked perfectly, installed rootchecker, definitely had root access. Left the kindle on overnight to charge using a wall socket.
Woke up this morning and somehow my kindle is now 10.2.6.. I even renamed otacerts.zip to something else and it still managed to update itself to a version which doesn't even exist as far as I am aware.
Am I missing something here? Does anyone have any input?

Amazon will update a select few device with the newest version before they actually release to everyone. You should REALLY thank amazon for making you one of the new guinea pigs haha. Also renaming otacerts.zip doesn't seem to work with the newer software versions. I've disabled all ota portions of silk using Rom Tollbox, I'll let you know on the next update. Though I'm using the 8.9 but should be the same

Factory cable is in the post on its way to me now, the root worked fine in 10.2.5 so my assumption would be the same for 10.2.6.
Edit: Since I am a risk-taker, see:foolish, I just decided to go ahead and root again with bin4ry's root. All is well and I have root again. I'd very much like it if I didn't have to go through this procedure once again, is there any way I can foolproof my system not to update, since otacerts didn't work last time?

[Q] Got my Kindle Fire HD 8.9" Rooted... Now what?

So I've rooted my Kindle Fire HD 8.9" and now I'd like to know what I need to do next in order to get an Android ROM (probably CM10) running on it. I have searched all around but I can not for the life of me figure out how to get it working. I know I need to get TWRP installed so I can flash the rom but I do not know how to get TWRP installed. Any help would be great at this point!

I tried months ago to root my 8.9... with no success (Bin4ry's V 17). What method did you use to root and do you remember what firmware you had before you did it? I think I might be stuck because I have version: 8.1.4. Has anyone had success rooting the 8.9 with 8.1.4?

I've done it with version 8.3.0 yesterday following this approach as suggested here.
Got some errors the first time. After factory reset second time was fine.
Had my problems with GMarket afterwards but following this (german!) approach it worked fine.

Can I root, and if I can how?

A few years ago I had a kindle fire 1st gen, and I bricked it trying to root. I got a fastboot cable and my PC wouldn't detect it, so now I have a fancy paperweight. Anyways, today I have another kindle. It's also first gen. It's running 10.4.8, and I'm wondering if I can actually root it, without bricking it of course.
