try to close apps that still run in memory even after you close them to free up ram or avoid installing them completely
Stop auto start of apps.... Like fb,messenger, whatsapp etc....
Start using rooted apps!

Sorry if this is a noob question, this is my first android phone and do not fully understand android of yet.
Basically going to settings >>> Applications >>> Running services.
At the bottom of that screen you see Other : a mb Available b mb + c mb in 46
I understand one is memory used by essential processes, available and memory which can be freed up but what i don't understand is why it does not add up 768? and only around 520 mb?
Some of you RAM is taken up by the HTC Fast Boot feature. Around 80~100MB is used.
in adb shell type free and it will show around 630MB available, the rest is used for Radio and GPU

so disabling fastboot is advised?
Why? Do you really need the 768MB of RAM? What are you running? Photoshop? 768MB RAM is enough for a loooong time!

It's not a question of needing, I was just enlarging my knowledge on the subject.

Theoretically, it is possible. Try it out and see what happens and report back. However, it is also possible that the device saves some ram for hardware acceleration/graphics memory like the HD2 did...
why only 350 mb ram is available when the specifications say 512 mb ram is there in galaxy w
Because part of the RAM is reserved for OS. The phone really does have 512mb RAM.

Yeah, and the graphic card need memory, too.

Calculate with me: 350-50=300

Now 300-100=200, that's for your running services.
I only have about 100-150 mb free ram after a days of use, is this normal?

That depends.... have you checked your running programs to see what's running?
This is normal and good. Free memory in itself is well just a waste.
As long there is free memory which isn't needed otherwise the kernel will try to hold already used things (loaded data, loaded apps) in memory so that they are faster available (which also means less battery use) when needed again. When a process needs memory it can drop some of this cached data.
So instead of having a lot of free memory all the time it tries to make always good use of the 2 GB.

Whats the point of having 2GB of RAM, when the system dont use it?
I see. Thanks for explaining

Im a ram clearing addict I cant help myself when I see alot of ram is being used I have to hit that clear ram button. I have heared that ram in android works differently to windows and that by having programs ready in the ram its supposed to keep things running more quickly. But I find games and just the general phone feels faster when more ram is free. It must be my imagination ;-/

The more ram you get, the more the programs are using the RAM. It is normal. When you use a task killer program to kill those tasks, you will release the RAM back.
However, if you find out there are not much free RAM after you kill the tasks, then, it would be a memory leak.
Hi guys, i can't play any games because of the lag that i'm experiencing in-game. The free RAM memory is about 170-150 mb but when i launch games it becomes about 90-80 mb. What can i do to have about 200-210 mb of free RAM? thanks!!!!

i use stock 2.3.4 rom. I would not change rom because of my SE liveview that is not fully compatible with a non-stock rom
Besides, in Android, unused RAM is wasted RAM.

Yes but i can't play a game because when i start the app, the free ram becomes about 80 mb that is absolutely not enough to play a game smoothly
for getting good gaming experience in xperia play you shoul download light roms and you need to install lupus gb kernel and overclock to 1.4-1.6
there is no other way

I'm already running lupus gb kernel and already overcklocked to 1.4. What do you mean with "light roms"?
the roms that dont have many ram eating apps
for example gin2jellybean 1.9.8 is one of them
aurora play is great in gaming too and it too nice
but there are some problem with gb roms so i recommend krissdee hybrid rom
im using it now
for now i stayed on it for some hours its very good record for me(i cant use stock based ics roms more than 1 hour)

80mb of free ram means there's 80mb that the game could be using, while it isn't.

No, android will kill apps starting with the oldest to give the game more RAM.

Hi, i have this problem too before. Which class of sd card your using?
If you have sd card class 4 then dont move the game to sd or just install it to internal memory.
I dont know if this help but you should try it. Now i have no lag when playing games like mc4,asphalt7,hoc,real racing3,etc.
Im on aurora play, smartass2 1.2 ghz+sio.
So far i have installed 125 games and applications (still 1 gb internal memory left) and i am running out of ram - nearly 300 mb, what is the solution to increase the ram in this case?

125 apps!!!
Anyway don't worry about RAM...
Android is not like Windows and free RAM is wasted RAM...
Android utilizes the maximum RAM available to it...
So don't worry...
But if you still sulk I can recommend Greenify...
Provided you need a rooted phone for this to work...
PS: btw, don't forget to click the Thanks button if I've helped you...
