I'm trying to play AVI files across my network from a samba share in Rockplayer. I use Astro or ES file manager but neither of them will open AVI files in rockplayer.
Any suggestions?
I´ve been trying to figure this out too, but no luck so far.
i dont think android does file association does it?
If your handy with the terminal you could mount the share to a folder on the sdcard, then browse to it from rockplayer.

The problem is astro and estrongs file manager are more like samba share browsers - they let you view the share files and folders, but when you try to access any files, they have to copy them to a local directory first. It's more like ftp access in practical terms, rather than true network filesystem access.
So if you succeeded in associating rockplayer with avi files through either astro or estrongs, then the moment you click on an avi file from your samba share, they'd copy the file to your sdcard entirely before it would begin to play. So at best, setting the association would only save you the effort of manually copying and pasting the avi file. Either way you'll be waiting a few minutes for the file to copy to a directory local to your phone.
If you want to access avi files over a samba share directly, you'll need to root and use cifs to mount the samba share on your sdcard, so that the share appears part of the phone's filesystem. Then you can just browse using rockplayer's own file manager throughout your samba share, and play avi files the moment they're clicked on, without any file copy operations or waiting around.
when i got my desire 3 weeks ago i was in the same quandary, and i ended up going the rooted phone with cifs option...

Another way of sorting this easily is using VLC Stream & Convert - with the added advantage of being able to browse your whole computer and mapped drives and stream data.
Have installed Android Manager Wifi without difficulty on both my SGS (Rooted & Froyo'd) and my PC. I am able to transfer files or blocks of files. However, I can't see an obvious way of transferring whole folder structures (i.e. my music directory off the PC). It would seem like I have to do it an album at a time, and manually create suitably named folders for the files to drop into.
Has anyone got any ideas if I am simply doing something wrong, or if there is a work around.
Many thanks, Phil
I have tried with file manager and found the files i was looking for in android/data/something but when i connect my GN to my PC (win7 32bit) i only get a few folders and files,
I have tested with both USB modes and I only get the basic folders such as
Alarms, Android, DCIM, Downloads, Movies, Music, Notifications, Pictures, Podcasts, Ringtones.
and the file manager reports more folders present :/
also the files i'm trying to access are within the android folder (which is visible on PC) but in filemanager there are 10-20 folders found in android/data that are missing on PC. PC only shows 3 folders in android/data
It also appears to be possible for other users to access the exact same file at the exact same filepath, why can't I?
is there a feature on GN or ICS that makes it impossible to access some files from the PC or is this a bug/flaw?
in case you guys need to know what files i'm trying to access, it's the game files to GTAIII
I kind of have a similar problem.
When i connect my phone to a windows 7 computer it mounts okey and shows me the files. If I create a folder on the phone from windows explorer, unmounts the device, I can not see this folder on the phone via a file manager unless i reboot my phone. This also applies the other way around. If I create a folder on the phone from a file manager, then mount the phone to the computer, I can not see the folder until I reboot my phone.
Is there a fix for this? Is it a bug? How can i resolve this? It's very frustrating.
MTP/PTP doesn't offer all the features the full USB transfer mode has. Search will help you find the pros and cons of this.
Workaround: Use an app like WiFi File Explorer or Airdroid.
In the settings I have seen the section BACKUP & RESTORE. In there, Backups can be done on external drives. And among other things, it says there can be shared folders from for example a NAS. Problem is, I dont find any shared folders although i have a NAS from Synology running with a lot of shared folders. However when I search in that setting, it doesnt show any NAS or folder. Why is that ?

I use my shared folders to backup my phone and it's really convenient.
Try accessing your shared folders with the built in file explorer to make sure you can communicate with your NAS.
Steps :
1 - Connect your phone to your local wifi
2 - Launch file explorer
3 - Select Network neighborhood and you should see your shared folders
If it still doesn't work then you should probably have a look at your NAS settings.
Hello everyone,
As the title says, is it possible to mount a SMB storage to a local folder of the Android TV? My problem is that I have a NAS attached to a Raspberry which has lots of roms, and on the TV I have installed Retroarch. The problem is that Retroarch can only see local folders, it doesn't have any implementation to access network folders. So what I'm trying to do is mounting that NAS as a local folder here in the TV but so far I got nothing, the best I could do is download an file explorer to access the NAS from the TV but that's it.
I know that the simplest solution would be to disconnect the NAS and plug it in to the USB of the TV (what I'm doing nowadays) but if I could mount that to the TV and still keep it attached to the RPI it would be great.
In case this is not possible (as I'm suspecting) without root, the alternative would be to download the pre-rooted .img from the other thread in this forum and go from there?
Thanks

Hmm i don't think it is possible to mount network devices like in windows.
