[Q] New N7 what do I do - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi, I just bought a new Nexus 7 32 GB (2013).
I transferred a load of files over to the Nexus from my PC. I can see them in the storage folder but can't access any i.e. I can't play any audio/video or read any pdfs.
On a separate occasion I tried to transfer over one AVI file but Windows Explorer kept crashing.
The tablet also keeps asking me to sign in for everything, which is annoying.
Anyway, I think I need to root my tablet but I'm a bit hesitant about this because I just bought the thing.
Anyway, some advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Beside return it and use your money better, unlock and root it install SlimROM and enjoy the glory of it Or install kali for "pentesting" 3
You can always return to factory defaults when you only rooted current rom. But if you unlock and install custom recovery then that needs a bit more of fiddling around to return it to stock.

Are you new to tablets, in general? You don't give a lot of info. You don't need root to play music/videos and to read pdfs. You do need an app that will handle your file. Your N7 should be able to handle video, audio, and pdf through google apps, I believe although I use other apps for those files. Have you tried to open any of these files from within an app? If the google apps don't work for you, play store has many free apps for everything you need.

Hi, yes, I'm new to tablets. I tried rooting my Samsung Galaxy Y a while ago but it was such a mess I've been put off Android since.
Anyway, I read about ES File Explorer and that seems to have helped as it actually lists and makes accessible all the files I transferred over. I can even delete files which I couldn't do previously.
One wonders why the Android OS doesn't have something built in to do this but anyways, I guess they're just forcing us to buy their apps.
As a windows user, I find it frustrating how I can't even do the most simple things in an intuitive way..like makes notes to a notepad whilst reading a pdf.
Anyways, I guess I need to do more research on rooting. The problem with rooting is that it's not just a question of following some instructions as invariably it goes wrong and then has to be salvaged.

It's just a matter of becoming familiar with it. Windows wasn't easy coming from Mac years ago. Now I have Windows 7 and latest MacOS in the house to try to comprehend. I think your choice of naked Android (Google product) may help in many regards because your tablet isn't loaded with bloatware. If you decide to root, it's also much easier on the google devices. If you know anything about ADB and command prompts, you can do it that way--and in the long run, it's the most valuable for learning about the process. If not, I've found Wugs Toolkit to be very user friendly--although a few times I had to resort to CMD input. The greatest challenge for most users is getting the ADB/Fastboot drivers loaded. His toolkit helps with that, but I'd already had it set up before ever trying the toolkit so I can't speak to how it goes. He is very helpful when/if you have a problem.
As far as pdf annotations, there are many free apps out there (ESFile Explorer should have been free unless there is a charge for non-US markets--your use of "whilst" could indicate that). Try ezPDF reader--the free trial version. Or, just search for pdf reader with annotations.
The best is that you found XDA. Someone is always willing to help.

[Q] File Browser

I just got my self a samsung windows phone 7 and was looking around for a few hours. my question is, Is there a file browser(file explorer) built into WP7. I just cant imagine Microsoft settling with Iphone like interface where you need to sync music a photos and what not.
Simple answer is no and you won't be seeing one from Microsoft any time soon if at all. You can find plenty of threads on this topic if you take the time to search for them.
thank you. yea i would searched but didnt really have time to spare :\
I moved from an HD2 to an HD7 a week ago and thus far I haven't missed having a file browser. In fact I had completely forgotten about it until now.
....
Nope, I still don't miss it.

It's probably because you don't do things which require that massively.
Like me - I never watch movies on my device so I did never care about missing codecs support.
But that doesn't mean they're not needed.
And BTW, regarding users etc.
The most successfull platform today supports all those missing things
yet it didn't prevent it from boasting a massive success on the market.
I'm probably going to try it this year, there are announcements of upcoming devices in Poland
unfortunately no qwerty ones (HD7,Trophy and this great LG)

maybe we don't miss it because we are not trying to use our devices as usb sticks (of which most people have several laying around).
The OS was designed that if something is stored on the phone, the proper apps can find them.
I too have not missed having a file explorer. The only reason I ever used it was to install cabs/ tweaks/ mods which are unnecessary on this device.

So I say still - you don't do things which require that. Fine for you.
Composing email with many different attachements is the simple example here, without success on WP7 right now.
Deleting unwanted files on the device en masse is the second.
Currently you cannot even put all the desired files easily on the device with one simple move
Like docs, videos, pics alltogether. Videos are compressed for instance AFAIK before beeing stored.
Zune does not support docs. All is complicated than.
Device's ability to recognize files by an app is not blocking seeing the file structure.
My SE X2 can do it like WP7, but with all the file explorer capabilities.

Never needed to do that yet, but I'm sure the ability to do so will come via an update before I need it. It was very, very rare for me to need to do that when I used WM too.

Docs sync to Skydrive automatically if you use Windows Live Mesh like I do. Videos, Pics and Music all sync over wireless to the phone via Zune. How hard is that? Drag 'n' drop.
Erm...have you actually USED WP7?

Yep, so are photos and music, all squeezed down to fit the phone's screen and memory. You don't HAVE to let Zune squeeze them, but it's an option I use extensively. No need for a 10Megapixel image on a 480x800 screen. No need for my mp3s to be more than 128Kbps either when using a bluetooth headset.

No the docs sync via Windows Live Mesh. Sheesh. It's all automated.

[Q] REAL hacking.

Hello there to all the souls of the xda forums.
im new to wp7. never used one before like 3 days ago. i like it, great device my surround is. but im not here to tell you about how good it is. we all know its good.
im here to ask if theres any real hacking going on with this thing yet. im looking for at least some kind of command line.
from there i could use tools such as aircrack, nmap, metasploit, SET, etc.
ive had an iphone for about 3 years, booting iOS and Android. i am used to hacking from that, but at the same time i know there a bigger user base for those devices, so theres more devs for it. i just wanted to know if anyone has already started on such a project before i dedicate alot of my time to developing this for you all.
BTW i am not interested in pirating apps, cracking apps
With enough effort, command-line interface *might* be possible - the OS technically supports such things - but the underlying core is Windows CE. Even less so than NT, CE really isn't meant for a CLI; apps are written with the intent of being run on a graphical interface. Also, having no POSIX compatibility and only partial Win32 compatibility, a lot of apps that you're used to from the desktop (or from POSIX-based phone OSs like iOS and Android) aren't going to be available.
That said, if you want to get started in the WP7 hacking space, there's certainly plenty to do. One project that I have on the back burner until I get some more urgent stuff out of the way is a SSH client. There are a number of things that are required here. First of all, we have homebrew Socket support, but the official SDK lacks it so you'd need to use a native Homebrew DLL. Second, there's no official command line interface, so you'd need to write one. The second point is all sorts of fun, since what you're really writing is a terminal emulator.
Other interesting projects include getting a unified cross-platform approach to writing to the filesystem, or even reading from all of it (instead of the relatively small portions currently accessible) or figuring out how to make third-party apps run in the background.
thanks man. I think I'll work on getting a full file browser for the phone. That should happen , i think, before anything else. As far as a terminal emu, it sounds like its going to be more of a chalange for me. Again, I'm used to more Linux and UNIX systems than I am windows. I had to reinstall windows 7 onto a partition just so I could sync the phone with the Zune software Microsoft insisted I use.
So is anyone currently working on the file browser? Has there been any progress with it? If so, who should I contact so I can help?

*.PNG files

Hello,
I have on my SGS a newspaper application,so i can read my local newspaper every day on my android. Very nice...
But because is easier to read on big monitor, i was wondering if is possible to read this in windows 7 pc?
So i copy the folder that was on my android sdcard(inside the newspaper application) on windows7 pc, but is impossible for me to read it in one peace, like on android.
Here i have a lot of *.png files and each image is a part of some big image(the regular newspaper page is cut in multiple *.png image files).
I cant found some software to open it and read completely.
Can somebody help me?
Thank you
Kikan
You would be far better off downloading a Windows application for reading newspapers or using Google Reader, since not only is the app you are talking about designed to run on a totally different OS, it is also formatted for a much smaller screen.
If all else fails, just go to your local newspaper's website on any standard browser...I imagine the reading experience will be much the same.
thank you for your answer...
I know all of that, but the apps for android, give me gratis all newspaper,
local newspaper's website give me only basic pages....
And if i'm outside my country, local newspaper's website will not work.
I'm leaving in one country and working in another, so when i drive to work, my apps can download all newspaper and after i can read it outside my country on SGS , and i will prefer to read it on windows pc with bigger screen...
Is there an emulator for android for windows ...::)))
thanks
kikan

Ran into 2 must have apps IMO anyway...

1) PowerMax: I've been searching for a good battery saver app and I've tried all of the ones I could find and just wasn't happy with their claims and performance. I stumbled upon PowerMax, tried it out with its full feature version for a 7 day trial. I was amazed at how great this app works. It's a simple one click program that you use when you shut your phone off. I use every time I shut off my phone. It shuts everything it can down but you can receive calls, texts, alarms, tweets etc. When you turn your phone on it restores all your settings back to what you had and if you look at your battery level, I use a numbered on in the status bar so I can see the exact number, you should have lost very little and I mean very little battery level. My Epic on Froyo was horrible but with this app when not using the phone the battery level stays pretty much close to what it was when you shut it off. Overnight you also keep a great amount of your charge if you don't plug it in.
2) AirDroid: First I only have working Mac's and one dead PC so not only can't I root my phone I always have trouble trying to get my computer to see my phone so I can do backups of my files. This is a new app, I was actually the first one to download it, its that new. No need for your cable. Just your phone on the same network as your computer. Start the app it gives you an IP address and password. You launch a web browser on your computer and you have a nice graphical interface of what's on your phone. The speeds are nice. You can upload (Import), download (Export), delete, back up even your system files as well as all your apps on the phone and SD card. Photos, music etc. Basically its kind of like a nandroid back up for non rooted phones. It evens has a Tether and mobile hotspot button. Haven't tried that but its there. I've been playing around with it for since I found the app and its never force closed or had any problems. I did have one occasion where my computer web browser force closed but I've had that happen just using it although rarely. I used Safari but I'm going to try it on other browsers I have installed and see how they work on them. Not sure if those who are rooted really need it but it is a definate must have for non rooted phones at least. This has been the only one that has worked flawlessly so far with good speeds and the UI is very nice and easy to use.
Hope this helps others as much as its helped me. I have tried connecting to my computer at least 20 times so far and it has never failed to connect.

You can't root a phone from Mac OS? That's weird (I wouldn't know). Have you ever considered trying something like VirtualBox, creating a virtual Windows/Linux machine and using USB passthru so the guest OS can see it? I'm pretty sure such a thing should be doable, and a virtual PC can be useful in other situations you may come across as well.

you can root with a mac. CWM 3.1.0.1 has a mac script that i use all the time..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076967
the mac instructions from the OP:
Mac OSX
1. Extract zip to a folder
2. Ensure phone is in usb debugging mode and connected to your computer
3. Open a terminal and navigate to the unzipped folder
4. Type: chmod 777 run.sh
5. Type: ./run.sh
6. Follow on screen instructions

Its not so much that "rooting" can't be done with Mac but more the lack of people who are "experts" at doing everything on a Mac. The issue I have is, unless I'm missing something is that usually Mac OS X 10.5 or higher is required. I really do want to get into the root game and explore the full potential of my phone but it just seems to be best doing so on a PC.
I have been a Mac fan since 1985 but did have to learn how to use and learn about fixing and setting up PC on a lower level because of a job I had a long time ago. I also do have an HP Pavillion a1710n desktop that I would love to use for Android purposes only but the problem I'm having is that the drive doesn't have Window's on it. I have been trying for almost a month trying to successfully install Windows Vista or 7 from iso files that a couple friends have let me use to get the computer up and running since HP has been no help at all and they never include physical disks with their computers. I know its not any hardware issues because I've done the testing and all the hardware checks out. I get all kinds of messages from the PC while attempting to install the system as to why it cannot finish the install. Never the same reason, never at the same point and after much research on the net I see there are many others out there complaining about the same thing.
I'm not being cheap. I'd purchase a retail version of Windows but I have been on disability for almost 2 years now and can't afford to pay $130+ right now which is why my friend has sent me an iso file so I could at least get my computer going. A real treat would be if someone would come out with the old z4Root type apps that allow you to root directly from you phone but no one seems to be interested in developing them anymore or the newer Android updates make it harder to do.
I would appreciate any help on how to successfully get Windows to install on my HP. Thanks in advance.
Jim
P.S. The other reason I'd like to get the PC running is so that I can learn how to eventually create apps for Android. I'd start by learning how to make themes, kernals etc, and eventually get more into learning programming for apps and such.
DrKaotica,
Thanks for the info and your offer to help if I need someone to ask who knows how to do things on the Mac. I have a feeling that you are running 10.5 or higher though which is why you are able to successfully play with your phone. If not and you're running 10.4 or less I'd be interested in learning more from you and your experience. Thanks in advance.

Believe newegg has Windows 7 Home Premium for 80 bucks right now. As for trying to get it installed on the HP, sounds like it might be a hard drive issue. Especially if it gives you different errors at different times, your hard drive might be dying, and if windows installer puts files on a sector of your HD that has gone bad, it won't be able to read the file and will give you an error.

First off, are you using a dual.layered discfor the install.
Second, try to use an easier linux distro, instead of windows if you are looking to go that route?

Right now being temporarily disabled $80 needs to go towards my monthly bills but thanks for the info. All I can do for testing the PC components is what I can do in the cmd.exe window like chkdsk etc., unless someone knows of any freeware type bootable diagnostics programs that can check the status of the hardware. I've been trying to find a bootable program that will allow me to test the PC and also partition my hard drive but haven't found anything. Any ideas would be appreciated. I have searched the internet for all error codes or messages I run into and there are tons of other PC users complaining about the same issues and they've swapped all kinds of hardware and still can't install Windows. I think if I can find a bootable diagnostics software and partion my hard drive I should be able to get it up and running.
I've been able to install Windows 7 4 times but they were all unstable. Windows Vista 2 times and the same, unstable but these were iso copies borrowed from a friend.

Using standard 4.7GB DVD discs. I have no idea what linus distro is but willing to try anything just to get this PC up and running. Is that a different operating system? I'll google it but any info and links you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks.
*Two things that seem to help get the discs to install is when I do these commands in the cmd.exe shell. 1) format c: 2) chkdsk c: /r and then do a clean install. Not 100% but 80% of the time. I thought you could partition your hard drive in the cmd shell but I can't find a command for it. Anyone know how to create a partition on a computer with no system installed? As necessary, to partition from inside recovery..
And yea, linux distros are technically "linux distributions", different versions of linux. If you are looking to get into programming, starting somewhere like linux getting used to cmd line controls versus Windows style navigation is a decent starting point..
Google will help with all of that...

Also, about bootable software, google partition magic, you can use that with most Windows computers. Dell's will sometimes throw some curveballs, but a good utility none the less..
Also, if malware is your problem, look up Combofix..

Thanks for the cmd help. I did find something called Hiren's Boot CD 15.1, free with tons of utilities. Just ran sectors on HD and not even one error. Always format prior to install so I would think any malware would be wiped as well. Doing a deep clean next to make sure and will test out their partition app.
I am trying to run Windows so I could install Android SDK/Java JDK/Java JRE/Eclipse and was thinking about learning Java for programming. Thinking of trying to play around with Themes, kernals etc, first while trying to figure out Java coding which seems to be a popular choice for getting a grasp on working on Android. I will look into Linus Distros though. I don't want to pass up anything that would be helpful. Thanks for your info. I really appreciate it.
Where did you see that you could move system apps? All I see is the SD card.
wow, airdroid is very cool, basically makes your phone a local webserver!

Deleting built in (and otherwise undeletable) metro apps (saves disk space too.)

EDIT: Found a faster and cleaner way!
You guys who run tablets that have uber tiny amounts of storage (e.g. 32gb dell venue 8 pro) might want to do this as it will free up space used by apps that you probably don't even touch. You can always just install any you want to keep from the Windows store, but personally I think 8 apps are all crap (except Netflix.)
Click start > type 'powershell' (no quotes) > press ctrl+shift+enter > (say yes if it asks)
Type the following:
Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -online | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -online
Get-AppXPackage | Remove-AppxPackage
Tada! No more useless built in Windows apps taking up disk space, and new user accounts don't start with a cluttered start menu.
If you're like me and you keep an autoconfigure batch script for new installations, you can accomplish the above with the following lines:
powershell -Command "Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -online | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -online"
powershell -Command "Get-AppXPackage | Remove-AppxPackage"
Guessing this works with RT as well, but it's a sad OS that I wouldn't ever buy, so I can't test.
(Old post sticking around for archival purposes)
I never use these things. I don't like apps that force full screen when it is really unnecessary. I guess it makes sense for a touch screen, but for a desktop this is downright stupid, especially when you have a big monitor and like working with multiple things at once. Anyways, I noticed that these take up a gig of space, and I am on an SSD, so space is precious. Sadly, uninstalling them from the start menu doesn't actually delete them, in fact it's really no different at all from using the unpin from start option.
Simply navigating to that folder to delete them doesn't work. First you'll claim ownership via the UI, and then it will at least let you browse the folder. I tried taking it a step further and using the universal "take all" method from an admin prompt:
d:\windows\program files\> icacls windowsapps\* /T /C /Grant UsersOI)(CI)(MA)
It failed. So I figured, let's try rebooting to the command console and do the same thing. Success! Well, not really.
If you type del windowsapps, it pretends to delete them, but it doesn't actually do so. Microsoft is clever, they really went out of their way to make sure you keep them and like them! So I took it a step further, I tried the same thing from WinPE by booting from the install disk, hitting the repair button, and navigating to the command shell. Same result as above. Microsoft REALLY wants to make sure they remain intact.
Fortunately though, I have an ace up my sleeve. I booted a linux ISO, mounted the partition, and did an rm -rf WindowsApps, and lo and behold, its gone! You see, linux doesn't really care if you keep metro apps, it just does whatever you tell it to.
By the way, I did this inside of a VM just to make sure that it doesn't break anything, and so far, it doesn't appear to do so. The apps still remain in the start menu (if you didn't unpin them) but launching them just returns right back to the start menu. No worries, just unpin them and it will stay out of sight and out of mind.
Something confuses me though...the live tiles for these apps still actually work. At least, the live tiles for news, finance, and travel still work, but launching the app just drops you back to the start menu. My guess is that the live tile portion of the app runs in another process. Somebody who is more familiar with WinRT could chime in here. Also, the useless windows store and some important things like the desktop app and the "pc settings" app (aka metro control panel) remains intact, so no issues there.
Anyways, I'd like to figure out a way to delete these while windows is still running, that way I can automate doing so when I install windows. Any ideas? My current thought is to remove them from the install.wim, but it's kind of a PITA and often something goes wrong when I try to muck with that.
Thanks for the info. I won't be able to do the research until the weekend, but in searching for windows 8 (non-Microsoft) themes, I found info on a program (I hate that all of a sudden all programs are being called 'apps') which lets you take (for real) ownership if system files. The info where I ran into it's usage was because Windows 7 and 8 need either hacked system files (guess having a hacked 7 with legit license was a great idea) or a special program to load a custom theme.

Out of curiosity, what built-in apps did you find to be un-deleteable? Removing the built-in apps that I didn't use (Finance, News, etc.) was easy; just right-click or flick downward (to select the tile) then select Uninstall. Leftover files in the WindowsApps dir could be removed.

The built in apps that it places on the start menu when you first log in to Windows 8. It prevents you from deleting them, because then new accounts won't see the apps, and it forces them on to the start menu by default.
You can delete them from Start easily enough, if for some reason you find their presence there offensive. You can also delete the updated versions from the device. The basline (1.2) versions are, I assume, what you are complaining about... meh. If you want to bang your head against this, go ahead. I get what you're asking for now, though I really don't understand why. Besides, full-screen or not, some of the "Metro" apps are pretty good, especially a few of the games (which are frequently FS anyhow). It's worth keeping the store around for free game downloads IMO... but I think we've already established that our opinions differ on how to use Win8.

You're thinking of using the "uninstall" option from the start menu. That does NOT delete them, it just removes all references to them. They still reside on the hard disk and consume disk space. On my 120GB SSD on my laptop, every gig counts. Why leave them there when they are doing nothing at all? No banging your head involved, just boot up linux, rm -rf WinApps, problem solved.
Anyways, last I checked there were approximately zero AAA titles in the windows store. In fact, I've yet to see any windows app do anything that can't already be done better in a web browser. I'm not particularly impressed with solitaire collection, pinball, toy soldiers...and ooh mahjong, the game to end all games. The only one even remotely interesting is hydro thunder, in which case they ought to call it Retro instead of Metro.

Awesome, thanks!
You could had taken ownership of the WindowsApps folder and delete it, that's what I did.

Oh, so a game is only good if it has AAA backing?

I tried that, even used some command line stuff that break all file locks and ensure that the current user has full control over the files. It would let you delete them, even go through and say it deleted them, but when you look in the directory again, they are still there.

No. My current favorites are both indie titles, and are not AAA. Those being Natural-Selection 2, and League of Legends.
For Google Chrome, there are MORE and BETTER games than in the Windows store, and to a lesser extent, Firefox as well. Yep, web browsers have better games than the Windows store.
Every single game in the windows store is either old or just plain crap. I played Angry Birds on a CELL PHONE over a YEAR ago. These are all casual games, not games that you sit down for a marathon session to play. If the windows store is your idea of a good place to get games, then I dare you to go to your friends and say "Hey guys, let's all go to my house and play some reversi and then some tick tack toe!" and see what kind of reaction you get. Or how about one better, ask them to bring their PC's over for a windows 8 lan party, I'm sure they'll get right on that one.
The two games I listed above are legit desktop titles. Windows 8 games are not. In fact, as I've said numerous times, there isn't a single windows store app that does anything that isn't already done better in a browser.
So I'm doing the ol' nuclear option of a reformat for the windows 8.1 update, and I just updated OP to include some new info I found (Maybe common knowledge at this point after 18 months of futzing around with 8? Who knows, just something I discovered on my own a few minutes ago while tinkering with powershell.)
Really neat and really clean compared to the other way.
I use Embedded edition that doesn't include preinstalled metro apps (only IE, skydrive and photo viewer are included)

That's effectively what you get when you run the two commands I listed. For whatever reason, skydrive and photo viewer aren't possible to remove. In fact they don't even appear to reside in the WindowsApps folder...I'm not even sure where they reside.
ok but true reason why I use embedded edition is that I got free product key from MS DreamSpark
