LG QRemote QuickRemote + Working ROM? - G Pad 8.3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi please can someone tell me how to get LG QRemote (Or Quick Remote, as it's sometimes referred to) working on a UK LG G Pad 8.3? I got the tablet for free in a promotion when I bought an LG UHD TV and I thought after reading about QRemote (which is mentioned in all of the promotions for this device) that I could simply use the tablet mainly as a remote control for controlling all of the various AV components I have and of ditching the seven or so remote controls I currently have. I have tried some universal/learning remotes, but my success has varied in getting these to learn the codes for all of my devices.
However it turns out that the UK version didn't ship with QRemote preinstalled. The official word from LG was because in their view there was no demand for this feature in the UK. I of course have struggled to understand this point of view, but there seems to be little I can do about it. Also there doesn't seem to be a simple APK for this app that I can download.
My device does appear to have an IR blaster, but after trying a few IR Remote apps, none so far have been able to recognise that the IR blaster is there. I don't know if this has also been disabled in hardware, or if it's just a software limitation.
So my thoughts are that maybe either one of you guys can make an APK for this app for me and others like me and share it here, or maybe I could flash my G Pad with a custom American ROM, with QRemote included? If so is there any guide anywhere that would show me how to do this safely and how/where to obtain a custom ROM? I have already rooted the device, so hopefully that's half the battle.

Hi
Interesting thread
I was searching for my G Pad in order to find a way to inject another Quick Remote app (like that of G2) in it for having more options because G Pad per se only supports TVs, DVD players and Blue rays while a G2 for example includes also Data Projectors and Air Conditioners that are more practical for me at least.
Regarding to your case, I may upload my QR's APK and Odex for you but i am not sure whether it would work or not. Then if you wish so, let me know.
And about my case, if some one thinks it would be possible with no harm, i'd be glad to know.

I don't know if that would work either. Anyone? A custom Rom that includes it even?

All of the custom roms I have tried did not include the remote functionality. My G3 definitely has a better remote program. It is silly that the GPad remote program is gimped in the way that it is.

The IR blaster works and I got a version of QRemote from a pack of official LG apps supplied by one of the custom ROM developers for this device. But you are correct that it has been severely 'gimped' over what was originally advertised in the promotions for this device. It can currently only control some TV's some DVD players and some Blue-ray players. The learning features have been removed, as has the ability to control any AV components, or any other devices.
What exactly is the point of an IR blaster without this functionality? They gave me the G Pad with my TV. But currently the installed software can't even fully control my TV.
What alternatives are there, preferably with full learning functionality?

On the GPad itself, none that I am aware of. The device driver from what I have read for the IR functionality is locked down and no open source alternative works with the hardware. Until LG patches it, or releases the driver we have what we have but nothing more... (about all I can do with my Samsung TV that is useful for my setup is turn it on and change the input)

It was my understanding that the g pad only has a transmitter and no receiver which is why we can't get our tablet to learn from our remotes.

[Q] TV Guide/IR Blaster

Hey all,
I've been using CM for a while, but I always have a lingering regret of going back to stock for the sole purpose of having the TV app. The greatest thing about it was it had a simple TV favourite interface with remote controls and access to other media systems.
Has anyone discovered any apps similar to this? Meaning to take advantage of the IR blaster for the one and have a nice interface with cable TV.

I use the Highly Customizable remote (IR Blaster) called "smart remote" I'ts a little pricey but I believe its well worth it, you can set up anything and everything with it. I have my Denon receiver, BlueRay, Directv, Panasonic Viera TV, and my HD streaming box all connected to the app and if you set it up right you can usually turn all devices on with click of one button, including switching inputs on TV &/or receiver at the same time..here it is on the play market...https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy~~~~~it's made for the HTC One, Hope this helps you!!!

I am using Smart Remote. Also a little pricey but it controls everything I own and even things like HVAC units. Nice interface and easy to set up.

LoL just checked it again, on the Samsung Tab PRO web page (Belgium version) of the there is no mention at all about the IR... xD
I was pretty surprised when I saw the IR led on top of my 10.1
Anyway there is no app included on mine, So I'm gonna test some apps to see how it works
Just checked Samsungs site
Check out the attached image.

I was surprised as well when I found the IR emitter. Even weirder that there is no app provided in the Dutch version....which is probably just the generic EU version.
Smart IR Remote works nicely for me, I'm sticking with this
And good range as well.
i have the UK version, i had a look at that smart remote, its a fiver though and I just thought that it should come with one rather than having to pay!
Can I get hold of the solution from one of the other country versions from anywhere?
Cheers

conan1600 mentioned that his came with Peel Smart Remote.
You can download that for free from the Google play store.
and there are many others for free in the Google play store.
Same here, Smart Remote is well worth the money. The dev was really helpful in getting all my AV equipment working with the app.

You can also download watchon from samsung apps. I did and it is actually a very nice app and remote control
Great, thanks for the replies, will give them a go!

[Q] Infrared remote control app?

Hi,
I got my SM-T705 two days ago.
Is there a stock app from Samsung to use the builtin IR blaster or do I have to look at the Play Store?
Any recommendations?
Axel.

Hi Edan,
I'm using your SelambA ROM. It looks like the 2 apps have been debloated
I restored both apps from TWRP backup and now I know why you removed them. Pure Crap...
What app are you using?
Smart IR Remote looks very promising.
Axel.
I'm using smart it remote and it's quite good. Not 100% but 95.

Is the builtin IR blaster capable of learning commands from other remote controls?

Ok, in the meantime I've tested Smart IR Remote and will answer my own question.
I've not been able to learn IR commands from other remotes.
Don't know if it's a restriction of the IR blaster hardware or the software.
It's hardware limitation. There's no IR receiver on our Tabs. Only a transceiver.
Its main purpose is working as a tv remote. It's not IrDA port from old Nokia's.
The smart ir support is quite helpful if you have issues.

I own a few devices which are not, or only partly, supported by Smart IR Remote, but it only makes sense when I can control all of my devices.
Smart IR Remote supports importing of Pronto hex codes. Unfortunately I do not own a Pronto, only a Logitech Harmony.
I know there is a way of importing Pronto hex codes to the Harmony remotes, but not the other way round.

[HELP] Need help from UWP developer with LG smart TV

Hi!
If you have an experience with UWP programming (i.e. you have Visual Studio installed and know how to write and debug UWP apps on C#), you're also own LG smart TV, and have time and ability to help people, please contact me via PM!
Thank you!
You better think a litle to my old question: can be mortscript ported?
Why do you think it's "better"? I don't need that mortscript and don't care about it at all.
All I need is to find incompatibility between my "Cast to" app and LG smart TV's
Lg is miracast capable. And i guess, your app is aircast.
My app is DLNA and Miracast capable and perfectly works with most of TV brands except LG. My goal is figure out why.
Its complicated... http://www.lg.com/ca_en/support/product-help/CT20098023-1348676620463-file-sharing-dlna

No, it is not. By customer reports, app crashes right after (or before) displaying the very first picture on the LG smart TV. All you need is start solution under VS debugger, connect to TV, try to display first picture, get an exception and tell me what is going on. But the key point is LG TV, I can't buy TV set just for testing.
But looks like we have a lack of developers or LG TV's here (or both )

IR blaster / universal remote control

Any decent IR blaster / universal rmote control app to make use of this feature in the G4?
I found only the TV Kill app on F-Droid, which works, but it can only turn TVs off.
There are lots of universal remote apps on Google Play / Aurora store, but they have unbelievable amounts of trackers and unnecessary permissions according to exodus https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/ for what should be a relatively simple and unobtrusive app.
Nobody?
So far the best I've found is IR Remote Control: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jw.ir.remote.control
It hasn't been updated since 2016, has limited device support, and has a somewhat cramped UI, but it actually works and isn't full of trackers and requires few permissions.
I hope there is something better out there, but for now I guess it's good enough.
I've been using this app for years. It works great and has good layout customization abilities.

Thanks for the suggestion.
There are a couple of issues:
The permissions required seem excessive: https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/9458/
It does not install for me on /e/ and microg saying there is no billing permission.
I actually, all remote control apps, I have used before was not as good as the standard universal remote controls. With their help, you can control TVs, consoles, DVD players, audio systems, and other devices. As I've read here https://themybuy.com/best-universal-remote-control/ such controls as Logitech Harmony Ultimate can work with nearly 200k entertainment and smart home devices. Speaking about apps, I have not found such applications yet that can work with so many devices. Also, they are hard in installment and configuration. But it is my opinion.
Hi All,
Need quick help from you all.....
I was working on making a universal Alexa-operated IR remote control with which one can control any device present at home.
Currently, I am able to control TVs (using RC5 protocol) and music systems (using NEX protocol).
But I am facing a lot of difficulties in decoding the AC remote control. (My observation is that AC remote is sending a lot of data as compared to a normal remote control)
can anyone help/guide me in with AC remotes?

I my opinion If I was on your place I would go with Logitech harmony as it has amazing features and easy to control.
This thread is about an app for the IR blaster on phones, not dedicated remote controls.
There is a new app option on F-Droid, creatively named IR Remote:
IR Remote | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository
IR TV Remote
f-droid.org
It's not perfect as there are currently some bugs and some buttons do not work correctly, but it is serviceable, and bug reports could make it better. Seems like the cleanest/safest option so far.
