8.4 vs 10.5 - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently own the S 8.4 LTE, but somebody fell in love with it and wants to buy it from me for pretty much the price i bought it for (somebody visiting me from another country who can't wait for a new one to be delivered), so far i like the tablet and i am using it as my main phone (don't make many phone calls with it and when i do i use bluetooth) and the rest is basically emailing and IM(ing).
So if i sell this one to this person i was considering the 10.5. I understand that with a larger form factor some other difficulties come up (portability and such) but apart from that fact, anyone owns (or have used) both of them and could give me a reason to go for 10.5?
How is picture quality with lower pixel density? Does RGB makes a DIfference at this resolution vs Pentile in terms of Image Quality? Handling?
Thanks.

Tab Pro 8.4 vs Tab S 8.4

Is one of them better than the other?
I'm thinking about buying the pro version now, instead of waiting for the S version which comes out in about a month and it might be more expensive. Any suggestions?
The S is suppose to have the Super AMOLED screen instead of SuperLCD.
2.1 front cam instead of 2.0
3GB Ram instead of 2GB
Finger print sensor
But a different processor 1.9 instead of 2.3 if they are comparable that way.
Also a little slimmer and weighs less.

I think a lot depends on are you a fan of Amoled or TFT screens. Probably Tab S line will be the premium line and probably more expensive. Traditionally Amoled screens are more expensive than TFT screens.
Of course another important consideration is the price differential. It maybe more value for money to get the TabPro over the Tab S.
I can't imagine Samsung screwing the early adopters of the TabPro by pricing the Tab S similar to TabPro at launch.
SoC wise the TabPro runs SnapDragon 800 2.3 GHz vs Exynos 1.9 GHz[Samsung stated cheaper to use in-house silicon] of the Tab S. SD800 had better gpu but essentially both are pretty similar power and battery performance wise

So which tab would be better for reading textbooks? Which screen the SUPERLCD or the AMOLED?
If Samsung instead would have come up with a new 8.4 or 8.0 Note (S-Pen) tab it would have made more sense for a new release within a short period.
I don't like reading on white backgrounds. I try to use a black background if possible.
Having said that, SuperLCD and Amoled operate differently. LCDs have the entire backlight switched on even if the background is black. Therefore consumes more battery. Amoleds only turn on the pixel when it's not black. Therefore saving battery. But of cos if your browsing on a white background it's not going to save you battery.
As to which is better for reading textbooks, I find both technologies are just as good. Although Amoled has a wider colour gamut than LCD. So colours tend to look punchier.
I think your buying decision will likely be influenced more by the price than the tech. If the pricing differential is small than go for the Amoled. Thinner, lighter, better colours, potentially more power - saving display, more RAM.
I don't understand their marketing strategy. Launching so many TabPro/NotePro tablets not to mention their Tab4 line, and now TabS line. Maybe they just want to saturate the market.

To be honest the LCD screen in Tab Pro 8.4 is already very good.
Remember all the reviews said, when TabPro8.4 came out: "best screen we've ever seen on a 7 to 8 inch tablet" !
Also, the quality of the screen pretty much demolished the LG G Pad 8.3's screen. I know, i was about to buy a G Pad but fortunately i waited and went for TabPRO instead. Difference between LG G Pad and TabPRO was quite big. I don't know if the diff between TabPRO and TabS will be anywhere near that big!
So it's certainly quite possible the Tab S will have a better screen... but since the TabPRO already has an "amazing" screen, it depends if you really need "better than amazing". and are willing to pay full msrp for it.
i think of it this way... if u have an M3 and it's working great, will you upgrade 3 months later and get an M5?

I agree with what you said. This LCD screen is already very good. I have a NotePro 12.2 and the screen is really good. Even better when squeezed into 8.4.
For me really depends on the price point of the TabS. I do prefer SD800 over Exynos but if the price is close I would probably get the TabS.
Ultimately you need to decide what parameters are more important to you and base your decision on that. I can only tell you my decision process but you make the final decision for yourself.

It seems this is exactly what is happening. TabPro 8.4 went on sale in States for $ 399, and the new Tab S 8.4 is now also going on sale at the same $ 399. (TabPro was reduved to $ 369 within a month, so early adopters, like myself, are screwed a couple of times over in this case )
Anyone know if the Tab Pro S will be offered with LTE?
Yes will be offered with LTE.

Sorry to hear that. Bad move Samsung. Do you think you will win brand loyalty by screwing your most passionate customers esp the early adopters? I can understand their strategy of trying to win more sales by tempting new customers with better tech and low prices. While you might tempt the early adopters to switch to their newer tablets. But releasing a newer better tablet in less than 6 months? It can backfire. You are going to piss off the early adopters who supported you.

From what I have read about the Tab S, the screen is sadly pentile and while saturated color not very accurate, if mainly using for reading would look at it in person first to make sure you like how text renders on the screen.
One definite benefit it has over the Tab Pro though is the speakers are on different sides of the screen instead of both on the bottom.

I was afraid it might be pentile. Waiting to hear more from reviews. Though I had a nagging suspicion it was pentile, as Samsung said it was Super Amoled and not Super Amoled Plus [RGB sub pixel structure] which the Tab 7.7 had.
Speakers being on different sides would be good. Like the 10.5 & 12.2 Tabs.
Damn you Samsung. If you're going to do a superlative tablet, go all out and use Super Amoled Plus 2560x1600. It's more expensive tech. But you can charge more for it and it would justify the higher price for your target audience, especially photographers and people needing the larger color gamut and non-pentile display. And it wouldn't piss the TabPro buyers so much.

I'm in the same boat. I would have loved to have waited for the S instead of snagging the Pro last month. Oh well. I'm still happy with my purchase.
Looking at the specs for the US wifi model it also uses a exynos cpu which could mean fewer roms.

That would be unfortunate. I've had (still use, for other reasons) a pentile-screened Moto. Hate that aspect of it.
That said, I have several times knowingly bought expensive technology that was about to be replaced by a newer version simply because the several-month interval was worth it. Around ten years ago, knowing a $100 price break on what I was buying would happen in a month (and this was before refunds were feasible), and knowing that an improved version was three months away, I bought a $350 PDA. (That was a lot of money back then.) But having it was worth easily $10-$20 per DAY to me, so I viewed it as an annoyance but not a deal breaker.
Ask yourself these questions: would you notice the cost of two drinks at Starbucks a day? That's about $10/day. Yeah, we gripe at spending $2 on the Play Store for an app, but my typical martini or bourbon is $12/drink.
Would having the device now make you as much happier as those two coffees or one martini? (Or, put the other way, would you be discontented by unsatisfied desire without it?)
If so, get it now, because the opportunity cost is worth it.

Galaxy Tab S 10.5

Hi all,
I wish to buy a new tablet but I'm wondering about which one to buy.
At first I was off on a galaxy note 10.1 2014 but after seeing tests on galaxy tab s I am interested, mainly thanks to autonomy.
By cons I read about several who said that the processor was not great and the tablet knew several lags.
My main use will be surfing, a little play and some times few films.
So what tablet choose to have a good flow and very good battery life.
Moreover, I'm French, can I buy my tablet in Canada and install a French ROM ?
Also, do you think the galaxy tab s will receive android L ?
Thanks a lot !!

Don't be discouraged by the videos in the post above mine and the negative comments by others. I'm sure those who say they are experiencing serious lag isses actually are. But not everyone is having those issues. My tablet does not come anywhere close to the lag on that video. It's hard for me to believe it's the same tablet. My tab S is the best tablet experience I have ever had and I would not try to turn anyone away from it. My suggestion is purchase it from a company with an easy return policy and give it a try for youself. If you experience the issues like in that guy's video return it for another one or move on to something else.

Well I would suggest you try it before you buy it or buy it where you can return it without restocking fee or any problems.
While the tablet has a good screen (a bit over saturated and unrealistic colors) it's kinda nice how the colors pops out.
If your main usage will be surfing, I don't know if all of them are that way, but at least mine and 2 others that I tried at different stores had something like stuttering while scrolling a web page, let me explain it. When you are scrolling, instead of the text scrolling with smooth movement, it jumps, sure those jumps are "small" but that jumpy text at least on my case was causing major headaches at the point, that I stop using it and return it (and paying $75 USD for restocking fee). Those jumps are more like it's dropping frames. On my opinion that is not acceptable for a "high end tablet", also when I tried for 20 minutes Asphalt 4 I saw some frames dropped. Also just typing or deleting something it was laggy. So this tablet for web browsing/e-mail, in my case was useless.
If you want to watch movies, I saw some on my 10.5 and yeah it was nice for scenes with vivid colors, but when there are shadows, because the blacks are to deep you loose all detail on the shadows, and instead of shadows you will se only clipped blacks. (not everybody will notice) but my hobby is Photography so I really notice this.
Battery life, well it's ok, not the greatest (comparing to my old iPad 2)
In terms of quality build, imo it's very good.
Well at the end I got a tab pro 8.4 and it has been a pleasure to use. Not a single jittering/lag issue as I was having with the tab s, I would probably say the problem of the tab S is that uses the Exynos combo.
Again, maybe all this issues I had with the Tab S, not everybody may notice, but for those who are sensitive to things like this, is a pain to use. That's why you will read some mixed opinions. So that's why I will suggest you to TRY it before with cold brain and not letting you get blown by the oversaturated colors.
My .2 cents.

[Q] Buy Galaxy Pro 8.4 or wait?

My current devices are... Nexus 5, Note 3 (broken radio ), Nexus 7 2013 LTE and a aging transformer 300. I am mainly looking at a replacement for my T300 which is my main media consumption device.
I want something 8 inches or more so its mainly between the Samsung Pro 8.4 and a LG G pad 8.3. I like the LG more in the closer to stock skin but not the out of date CPU. I'm also sorta considering the Acer 840fhd but it seems to have zero developer support. I am also considering the Samsung S 8.4 but don't like the CPU either as it won't have much support most likely either.
So is it a waste to buy the Samsung Pro 8.4 at this point as its getting old all ready for 220 as a refurbished unit? I missed out on the 199 new units sadly. I'm wondering how long until a really good cm12 build and how long it will maintain CM support. I need to keep it for 18 months or so from now for it to be worth it.
The Tab Pro 8.4 is a decent enough tablet. But I'd be inclined to wait and see what Sammy has coming, with the Pro 8.4 being a year old at this point. Unfortunately, whatever does come out, will be at a high price point (assuming they give us "premium" options like the Pro and Pro S; instead of just their lowball budget line like the "regular" Galaxy Tab series). And then the price will likely drop soon thereafter (due to lack of sales), so it doesn't benefit you much to be an early adopter.
It depends a lot on whether you value "the next big" thing more, of if the price point is your main concern. But the Pro 8.4 has a fairly common charging bug (mine included) that is very annoying, and makes me want to say "wait".
I would wait for the Nexus 9 to drop in the $299 brand new range. I miss the 4:3 form factor as I almost always use the tablet in portrait. The N9 will also likely receive an upgrade to Android M in the fall, whereas the Pro 8.4 might not even get Lollipop...

If I did it over again right now, I'd get the N9 as well. The only reason I bought the Pro 8.4 was that I broke my Note 8, couldn't wait to replace it, (use my tablet too much) and the Pro 8.4 was the best thing around at the time (N9 not released yet).

Yeah, now that I look it up, the N9 didn't release until October 2014. I though it was much earlier than that. I busted my Note 8 (and needed a replacement tablet) in April 2014. So no way I could have waited that long!
First world problems, I know. But its one of those things you can't do without, once you have it!
I certainly think it's worth it. After much research looking into most other (including more expensive options), I concluded the Tab Pro 8.4 is pretty much the perfect tablet for me. Awesome screen, still speedy Snapdragon 800, official CM support (plus some other ROMs). Plus the current $215 (certified refurb) price is truly great!
When comparing it to other options, the Tab S, I'm not sure about the PenTile AMOLED panel, but it has an Exynos SoC which is slightly slower than the Snapdragon and doesn't work as well with custom ROMs (although the Tab S 8.4 recently got official CM support too). The Nexus 9 apparently has some build quality issues, no SD card support (32GB only is not ideal since I'd want much storage for media) and the 4:3 aspect ratio which to me doesn't seem as good as Pro's 16:10. Now Samsung is rumored to announce another tablet soon, but it is rumored to also have a 4:3 screen, plus it too will probably have an Exynos SoC...
(TL;DR) I'm not sure why everyone in this thread is complaining about the Pro 8.4, it seems to be a perfect device that has everything I would want in a tablet for a great price, and is therefore the one I'm intending on getting! (unless you guys here have counter evidence that explains why this is actually a horrible tablet...)
Well, I bought a Tab Pro 8.4 the week of Black Friday at Best Buy for $199 and I love it. As a matter of fact, here it is over four months later & I still smile every time I pick it up. The form factor is perfect in my eyes. 8.4 inches is not too big and not too small. The 16:10 aspect ratio is crazy awesome. My PC monitor is 16:10 as well so it's a great match-up as it is what I'm used to. Oh, and you can't mention the screen without saying something about the 2560x1600 resolution with a 359 dpi. I would not mind having an AMOLED screen to match my Galaxy S5, but the IPS screen is still top-notch. I would *not* want a 4:3 device. With an aspect ratio like that you may as well go back to CRTs, IMO.
Some people may prefer a 4:3 screen or a bigger or smaller form factor. That's cool as everyone is different and has different tastes. However, if I were buying today I'd buy a Tab Pro 8.4 all over again.
I'll stop writing now...all this talk about my tablet makes me want to go use it. See ya later.

Sold my 910v, looking for suggestions on new device.

Hello everyone,
I recently sold my 910v for two main reasons: It was a nightmare to use on the t-mobile network; and it was a nightmare to mod/root/have fun with (not "that" kinda fun :angel. Anyways, I've been eye-ing some new phones, and the ones that caught my attention are:
Note 4 910F (same lovely note 4, modding community is going strong, can be had for around/under $400 USD wher I live)
Note 4 910C (Same as above, but I've heard better things about the Exynos variant)
OnePlus 3 (Cheap, new, will get lots of official support, and modding community is strong. Only concerns are weak WiFi capabilities and non-removable battery/no sd card)
Those 3 are on my major hit-list. Only reason why the OnePlus 3 is even mentioned is because it's the closest to the note4 specs wise, and can be had readily for $400; whereas the international note 4s are quite harder to obtain at this price. I've seen quite a lot of 910Gs and 910Hs, but I've never truly understood the differences between them and the other international variants. I believe it was certain LTE bands, but I could be wrong.
Now, here's where I'd love to hear your suggestions. Some of the criteria:
I'm a t-mobile user, so something that has LTE bands that I can make use of is a key requirement. International phones are preferred.
Specs wise; I'm not a gamer at all, and generally look for fluid UI, and HD video streaming.
Camera is one of the priorities, as I love to take photos of nice scenery and what-not. Not really a selfie person. I'd set the baseline as the note 4's camera in this case.
I prefer AMOLED screens, and resolution isn't a biggy. 1080p as the minimum.
Battery life is important, but I'm not looking for something that holds a charge for a week. I charge my phone every night after a ~17 hour day of being off charge. Note 4 as a baseline would be optimal.
I don't care how the device looks. I'll put a case on it anyways.
I'm tight on budget, so I can't go above $400. I'm willing to look into second hands/3rd party dealers (ebay, etc)
Modding support is important. I love to flash roms and kernels to get the best out of my phone (plus adaway for those horrible ads). So something that is easy to mod and has a healty/active community here on XDA.
Not really a huge priority, but removable battery/expandable storage are preferred.
Any insight on the matter is greatly appreciated. Now, off I go in search of le dank deals! Huzzaa!
EDIT#1: Just found out about the ZTE Axon 7; and boy, it looks amazing.... on paper. Hopefully they work out the WiFi and signal issues (confirmed to be fine on global version, or by flashing global rom on US variant) and the camera being glitchy in low-light conditions.
Another phone that caught my eye is the older LG G4; I can get it sub $300 and it seems to be slightly better than the note 4 overall. I still favor the newer axon 7 over this.

Help Me Decide

Howdy, folks.
I'm in the market for a tablet, and not familiar with the Samsung lineup, so I could use some guidance here.
First, I'm not sure I understand the difference between the A and S series. I assume it's a CPU issue, and I seem to recall a Tab A that I played around with didn't have an accelerometer and/or GPS, which are both critical for me.
Then we get to the firmware. I need to run Xposed and Xprivacy. Obviously that means I'll need to be able to root the machine. Would I be correct in assuming that I'm stuck with getting an S2, or is it possible to downgrade an S3 so I can benefit from the better hardware specs?
My choices seem to be an S2 at $480 or an S3 at $550 except that the S3 ships with a pen and LP, if I'm not mistaken, which knocks me out of the box in terms of running Xprivacy unless I can downgrade the OS.
Anyway, your input here would be helpful, and any pointers on unlocking / rooting would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
I think since late 2014, the Samsung tablets were split into just two lines, the Tab S, the high-end line, and the Tab A, the low cost line. In my humble opinion, the Tab A line is utter crap and it hasn't been updated effectively since 2015. If you want a cheap low end tablet, you might as well just buy one of those sub-100 dollar Amazon Fire tablets. Their specs are in the neighborhood of those Tab A tablets, but Fire tablets are much cheaper. Quite sadly, I think Samsung's high end line Tab S has also lost its way. I mean, I certainly love the idea of a high end Android tablet, but not at 500-600USD, specially when it comes with outdated flagship SoC, like the Snapdragon 820.
I love my Tab S 10.5, but if I am forced to replace it tomorrow, I'll probably get the Huawei Mediapad M3. Its hardware specs are high end enough to check nearly every box, and it costs under 300USD.
Excellent suggestion. I was wondering about alternatives to Samsung.
How would you compare the M3 to the S3? Can it be rooted? The new Samsung got excellent reviews for both construction and performance, and I confess the pen has appeal. I also wanted a 10"-ish screen, and the Huawei comes in at 8, so while the price is right, you give up a fair amount of screen.
I can pick up the S3 32 gig with a keyboard case for $550, which was more than I wanted to spend, but i can live with it since I'm not the type to buy a new device every year. Or even every two or three years, for that matter.

I have purchased 5 Tab A devices, 3 T280 and 2 T555. Me the missus and little one have the T280, my mother and I have the T555. Both have an accelerometer and GPS. I don't know of a Samsung tablet that doesn't unless you meant gyroscope?
The Tab A T280 is stuck on Lollipop and the T550 runs Nougat.
I don't have issues with either for how I use them.
I also own the Tab S, but I use the Tab A T555 far more as it's light, comfortable to hold and runs just fine.

The first thing I do when looking for a new tab is xda support, if you can't get a custom rom for it, forget it!
M3 support is thin to non-existant, they are just getting it to root, and no TWRP ( I think) , other than that its the best hardware for the price. Tab s2 is good, Tab A fair, s3 just starting.
Xposed is now officially on NU, the main framework has been released, modules compatibility varies.
For that amount of cash, your in ultrabook / chromebook territory.
A tablet that does not fit in a pocket, and costs the same as a dell ultrabook with 256 gb hdd and an i5, is a bad choice maybe?
I use my t705 as a pocket device, with the aspect ratio it just fits, and the fact that's its also a very cool phone makes it a nobrainer.
Also remember the folding screens are just months away, once they are out most of the current tabs will be obselete real quick.
I want something larger format (~10") for use when doing demos for customers, casual browsing or web work away from my desk or when traveling for short spans. An 8" screen is not of interest.
