[Q] How to restore the Amazon Kindle Fire 2 to stock? - Kindle Fire 2 Q&A, Help and Troubleshooting

Hi guys i have had various versions of Cyanogen mod running on my KFOT2 for the last few months but i would like to go back to the stock kindle software as I am selling the tablet. After a corrupt install i can get to the TWRP recovery but not mount usb storage. I have access to fastboot via cable but what am I supposed to do to restore it to stock as most threads here discuss how to root the kindle in the first place. Thanks!

Long time not even being active! Okay, so connect your Fastboot cable, and then download the file from this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096888. It also contains the tutorial and all, but it should be quite straightforward.

[SOLVED] I flashed the wrong bootloader, now what?

I falshed the wrong bootloader to my KF. Now it won't power up with no backlight, no kindle fire logo and no led on the power button. What should I do? Do I have to pry the back cover and use the Firekit LiveUSB (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1430038)? Will a factory cable fix this? It seems that a correct bootloader is needed to use fastboot so factory cables will not work.
What should I do now?
UPDATE: I solved this issue using the Firekit found here and a post about usb boot in here. I tried several times until I finally succeeded. I do not unbrick it using Firekit because it seemed not to work on my computer, just showing "waiting for OMAP44xx device..".In the end I use
Code:
./usbboot aboot.bin u-boot.bin; ./fastboot boot twrp-blaze-2.0.0RC0.img
found in the other post. And I succeed. I summarized several points. Hopefully, these may help others unbrick their Kindle Fire like me.
To pry KF's back case open, you can use the method found here in iFixit. I do not have those tools as they do but I just use small flat-head screwdriver and one credit card to open it. Be careful when dealing with the clips, because they are easy to break (I broke two of them...).
To short the contact point, you can find the exact position in the picture (the red arrow shows the position) in end of my post or here.
I use a small knife to short it but practically anything is OK if they can conduct electricity just like other posts say. I use the knife to touch the point and the frame of the CPU (as the gray frame shows in the attachment).
After I managed to boot my Kindle into TWRP, I flash the stock ROM but when I choose to reboot, it just shutdown and I cannot power it up. But after I put the back case back, it seems that everything went on well and it is working again!
Thanks to all the people helping me. You really teach me a lot. This unbricking experience us really interesting and I believe I will learn even more from all the people on xda.
Firekit, imho.

I use this command "fastboot -i 0x1949 flash bootloader u-boot-firefirefire-1.2.zip". I should have used "fastboot -i 0x1949 flash bootloader u-boot.bin" where the u-boot.bin file is extracted from u-boot-firefirefire-1.2.zip. I was confused at that time and now I am clear. When I flash the bootloader using Recovery, I should flash the zip file but if I use fastboot, I should flash the bin file. Hope this may be useful to some newbies like me.

Try Ubuntu 10.4 and see if that works. Also, provide as much detail as you can about your steps and what results you get.

It seems it won't work without the USB Stick.
I won't even try to use ubuntu from VMWare... I'll go straight to USB Stick... Are you using it?
PS: I'll try it as soon as I have mine KF open.

Can you remember the steps you did to Kindle? I mean, what tweaks did you use to cause you Kindle to be bricked? Given that your Kindle's led lights does not work, it is very possible that you flash the wrong bootloader. Maybe you should read those useful threads like Firekit and USB boot tricks once again, so that you can find more information. I use Ubuntu 11.10, not the latest version, but the Firekit seems not to work on my computer, only to find "waiting for OMAP44xx device..." on the screen no matter I short the contact or not. So I turned to the post here. I issued:
Code:
./usbboot aboot.bin u-boot.bin; ./fastboot boot twrp-blaze-2.0.0RC0.img
And it worked! There are some points to keep in mind. Before you do any of these steps, push the power button for 20 secs or more. Then type the commands mentioned in that post. And you short it and while keeping to shorted, you plug in the usb. If you see some text on your screen, then you succeed.
Hermano Francisco,
It's kind of tricky... to mw worked right now... I kept trying, unitl I find the right spot for the short, or the right time... My KF is working so far...
Gonna turn it off, read all the guides... and later I'll try to learn how to put market in it.
Thanks guys for help and all knowledge that you share.

[Q] Need Help - Bricked Kindle Fire

I got this kindle fire that I am trying to fix for my kid. I don't know what firmware was in. The KF has never been rooted. We tried to call Amazon for a replacement, but since I didn't remember which email account was tied to this KF and I couldn't find the Serial Number either, I got stuck with it. If could make this device to boot one more time to see the amazon account or the serial number that will be great.
Well anyways, these are the symptoms. After lots of hours of reading about bricked Kindle Fires I decided to order a factory cable suspecting the problem was a low battery KF going into a 5 second loop. The process went good. I was able to flash FFF 1.4a and TWRP 2.2.2.1 by going into fastboot mode, but the problem is that the KF does not want to start in recovery mode, nor in normal mode.
At this point, I think I can rule out a battery low problem, but I am not sure.
No matter what I do, I cannot enter to adb mode, and this is the real problem I don't seem to find an answer. If there was a way that I could upload the firmware from fastboot mode or a tool that forces recovery mode.
As I said this KF was always stock until today that I tried to unbrick it by installing the FFF and the TWRP. The TWRP never started.
As I said earlier my only objective at this point is to recover the serial number or the account email associated with my KF.
Question 2, how can I revert to the stock bootloader if everything else fails?
Any suggestions, links, ideas will be welcome.

I hate to ask this question but do you know how to access recovery by using the power button to get the boot menu then selecting recovery? If you are using the boot menu to attempt to access recovery and its not cooperating it`s possible that points to a broken bootloader or a broken recovery. When you flashed both fff and twrp did you see that it sent and physically wrote each one? maybe explain how you flashed them so we can see if a error was made there. What level do you believe the battery is at? Possible it could be playing a role in your present issue.

I have done a lot of experiments with my SGS2 about installing ROMS using ODIN or CWR, backing up my own images and making backups. Most of the work I do though is in CWR. I haven't dealt with TWR yet. I also installed ICS on my HP Touchpad. So, even though this is the first time I deal with the KF, I already some experience working with ROMS and images.
Back to the process. I installed the FFF using the Kindle Fire Utility. The KF was forced to fastboot mode via the factory cable. At first I could see on the KF splash screen with the black and orange logo, and now the KF is booting using a Black and Blue kindle fire logo with 1.4a on top. At the bottom of the splash I see instructions of the bootloader selector indicating to press the power button and select the mode that I want to boot. Either Normal Mode or Recovery Mode.
I flashed the TWRP 2.2.2.1 in fastboot mode using my command prompt by putting this code:
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash recovery [path]\openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.1-blaze.img
I was following the instructions on this guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1638452
I got stuck on step 3 after attempting to boot into recovery mode.
I can select which boot mode I want to go, but none of them work. I only get on the bottom of the screen saying Booting... and then the KF shuts down.
I suspect the battery had a good level of charge, but I can't tell for sure.
Thanks for everything.
Download TWRP again, check the md5, reinstall, and post whatever error messages (if any) that are in your command window here.
In the meantime, enter the following command and let me know what happens after you reboot.
Code:
fastboot oem idme bootmode 5001
fastboot reboot

When I'm doing instead of the fastboot reboot is to remove the factory cable. Shutdown the KF by holding the power button. Then I connect a regular USB cable. The KF starts the boot process. It enters the first splash screen. Then it moves to booting, but the booting fails. The only thing that I see is that the button light turns from green to yellow and then it shuts down. And the boot process starts again going into a boot loop.

Thanks for reading my thread.
If upon rebooting, the result is the same after changing the bootmode, it is possible the bootloader isn't working properly. If that's the case, flashing a new bootloader (with md5 verified) might not work, but it's worth a shot.
If that doesn't work, you should be able to change the bootmode to USBboot (4003) and use Firekit to replace the bootloader, but that's speaking theoretically. I've never tried it so I couldn't tell you whether it would work or not. But then you could always pull the back cover off the device and use the shorting trick to use Firekit in USBboot.
If installing a bootloader with the Firekit doesn't work, you're likely looking at a hardware issue, and there's not much we can do about that.

2 sounds too complicated. I will need to read more.
I'm at work. I am going to try number 1 when I get home.
One more question, how can I revert the KF so when the it boots it shows the original orange white logo?
Thanks for everything.

If you have any questions about using Firekit, don't be afraid to ask.
Get your device working properly before attempting to revert the bootloader back to stock. Contrary to what you may think, the custom bootloader is much better for you in this situation.

I suspect your battery is still depleted because it still sounds like a 5 second boot loop. Try this hold the power button down till it`s off and plug it to your pc for a few hours to see if you cannot get some power to your battery.

I think that would be the case if the device just rebooted. The OP is saying the device shuts down when FFF starts to load the operating system (Booting...) or recovery, which is why I think it is either the bootloader or some hardware issue.

I have nothing to lose. This KF is already bricked. I can certainly try anything. Which cable do you suggest I use? the Factory cable or the USB cable?
I think I answered my own question now. Using a regular USB cable puts the KF in the bootloop. I will use the factory cable instead. I shut down the KF, put the factory cable connected to my computer and the KF. Right now the KF is in the KindleFire splash screen waiting for fastboot commands of for me to use the button to tell it which mode to boot. I will leave it plug overnight.
Thanks for replying on my thread and trying to help me.

Thanks for coming back several times to reply on my thread.
That looks like your battery. From what I can tell, the device is just rebooting, not shutting down.
Unplug the device and hold the power button to perform a hard shutdown.
Plug the device in (it should power up on it's own) and hold the power button to shut it down again.
Leave it plugged into the computer until sometime tomorrow and try again.
Same thing I was thinking 5 second bootloop Thank you the video was very helpful to see just how its acting. Use stock cable to charge not factory.
OKay. I'm glad I came to check the thread one more time before going to bed. I removed the factory cable and put the regular usb instead. The KF was rebooting. I shut down the KF by holding the power button without unplugging the cable. Now the KF appears to be shut down, but the cable is still plugged. The yellow light does not appear as it normally would if it was charging though. I don't know if this is normal.

[Q] Kindle Fire HD 8.9 - 8.4.6 - stuck on blue logo, or fastboot screen.

Hello, sorry for my bad english.
Im a noob and have been looking and trying different things for days now and can't fix my KFHD8.9", I would greatly appreciate any help. Sorry if this have been asked, but ive tried everything and nothing seems to work or match the same problems.
I rooted my kindle fire hd 8.9" (8.4.6) and tried to install the 2nd bootloader + twrp (to eventually install CM10.2) using this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277105), but stupidly, I didn't back up on step 2. I attempted to flash the bootloader using fireflash and, as long as I could make it I did everything that was needed. I rebooted and pushed the volume up while booting, and it went to the blue logo and then into fastboot screen and then stoped there.
My pc (Windows 8) didn't recognized the device while in the fastboot screen as a kindle but as a portable device called "jem-PVT-prod-04"
I rebooted my KFHD pressing power button, and when starting again, I saw the orange logo, then the blue logo and it just got stuck there.
So now I just can get to the fastboot screen (by pressing volume up while its booting) or get stuck in the blue kindle fire logo if i dont press anything.
I would like to add also that while on the fastboot screen , My PC wont communicate with my device. I have the Android SDK installed and could use ADB before this happened.
I have tried the commands -i 0x1949 getvar product and -i 0x1945 reboot as suggested on many posts, but both of them stays in "waiting for device" for ever.
Then i tried using Kindle Fire First Aide as suggested on other posts but after downloading everything it gave me an error about something not matching with my device and what i was trying to do.
In top of that, somewhere I got the impression that I just got stuck in the middle of the procedure and that I could still install TWRP or flash a rom,
So now I don't know if my device is bricked, or stuck in the middle of the procedure or what, but if anyone could help me get back to the stock firmware or to twrp or something other than this two screens (blue logo or fastboot screen) it would be spectacular
thanx in advance.
I'm having the same exact issue more or less, but I can't pass the orange Kindle logo. My computer will recognize the Kindle for about all of 2 seconds, but only as Jem_.... then disconnects so I can't enter fastboot or move forward at all. I'm hoping that someone can help with this.
You have to install the driver for the jem device with the drivers in my signature before fastboot commands will work. Try holding volume down instead of up, it should go into recovery instead of fastboot if I remember right.

Recd msg alert stunts513 to the error while using wallpaper fix 2.1
I am having a terrible time with this Kindle HD 2nd generation table I tried to root. I was following this guys post on You tube and got it rooted but something when wrong when I tried installing the 2nd bootloader and twrp. I ended up stuck with a blue kindle logo. I tried turning it on with the volume button pushed to the left and it went from orange to blue and then to the twrp recovery menu. That was a few days ago, Its been stuck in that mode ever since, there are no back up folders and I think was making the problem worse, as it seems I could do the adb push and now I cant, well at least i couldnt before running your wallpaper fix 2.1 I ran it once and it wouldnt take I dont remember the error, but my table was at the blue logo screen. I remembered reading about running something while you powered the device on because there was an few seconds of access to something, I cant remember so I tried that and unknown to me It appears from these notes i found that I suscessfully installed it - then tried again -then something about the backup??? I am going to cut and paste it here and not do a thing until I hear from you, as I dont want to mess it up. I didnt know the fix worked cause i was watching the command screen and not the side of the file where i have your tool on my desktop.
Here is everything from that run. in the attached file
OK so lemme get this straight, you are stuck in twrp without adb access? Also I will have to double check on my PC but when I download that file its not a PDF but a text file and its HTML with a 404 error message in it when I view it on my kindle.

OK so lemme get this straight, you are stuck in twrp without adb access? Also I will have to double check on my PC but when I download that file its not a PDF but a text file and its HTML with a 404 error message in it when I view it on my kindle.

Yes somehow I have twrp and I think when I first got into the bootloop I had adb access but in fumbling around trying to fix it I lost adb access.
If I turn the kindle off, and then push power and do nothing it powers up with the yellow logo and in 4 seconds that log turns blue and it stays that way until i turn it off. In this state checking device manager it shows the device as an android phone, Android ADB interface. If I unplug the device the device manager no longer shows it - If I power up the device and while the logo is still yellow push the volume button to the left it boots to twrp
I re did the notes in a new pdf file I hope you can access them now. I tried looking at them from my post on my pc and got that same access code error. I cant win on this thing tonight,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly
John
The tutorial at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277105 tells you, in step 4, to place a custom ROM on the Kindle before you reboot into twrp. You then install that from from within twrp and then you get past the blue logo. If you didn't put the custom ROM on your kindle and adb isn't working then you need to install the abd drivers from stunts513's forum signature then do the twrp adb sideload.
Relevant sections from the tutorial:
Once you have the .zip files for the ROMs with GApps (Google apps, like Play Store), place them on the sdcard, and turn off the device. Turn it on, hold Volume-Up before the logo turns blue, and enter TWRP. Once there, immediately do two things: make a backup, and after that, wipes: system, factory reset, cache, and Dalvik cache. After these two things are done, go ahead and flash the .zip file, and wait for it to finish. After it finishes, go ahead and again, wipe cache and Dalvik cache, then reboot. After you rebooted, wait 5 minutes, then reboot again, and you're all done!

6. Wiped /sdcard, can't reboot from recovery: You thought you had the ROM file on the sdcard, but you didn't, and wiped everything, so without a ROM image, you can't boot into system.
Solution: Put the ROM file where your ADB binary is (usually inside platform-tools folder in Android SDK directory) and rename it rom.zip. On the device, boot into TWRP, select Advanced, then ADB Sideload. Connect device to PC. From here, run "adb" and hit Enter to check for your binary version, if it's anything lower than 1.0.3.0, you need to update the binaries by re-installing the latest Android SDK. Once the device is in sideloading mode and is connected to the PC, type "adb sideload rom.zip" and hit Enter. Now you'll find the ROM on the sdcard, flash, and you're done.

Yeah, I know there's a lot of information. It took me a long time and a lot of research before I attempted it as a noob myself. An important thing is to follow the tutorials word for word and skip nothing, and cross your fingers.
Got fastboot comunication between PC and KFHD

You have to install the driver for the jem device with the drivers in my signature before fastboot commands will work. Try holding volume down instead of up, it should go into recovery instead of fastboot if I remember right.

Thanx a lot for the quick response! :good: I was finally able to install your great drivers. I had to be quick as you said in some other posts, because the pc only detects it for a little while, when the logo it's still orange on the kindle, I think. After that, and while on fastboot screen, my device manager would detect a Jem-something device, but could not install any drivers on it. So I had to install the drivers really fast while in the orange logo, oh, and had to disable the drivers signature check on windows 8 also.
Now I can use fastboot commands to reboot the kindle, but I can still only get to the blue logo or the fastboot screen.
I guess this means I now can use the kindle first aide to go back to stock and try again for the TWRP and 2nd bootloader. I'll post if I can't make my kindle boot normal again later.
Do you know if this was my kindle being bricked or was it something else?
Thanks a lot again, I was very worried that i wasn't getting anywhere. .
Stuck on blue logo!
Hi!
I'm having a similar problem... I recently got a second hand Kindle 2nd Generation already rooted with Cyanogenmod 10.1.3.otter2 on it. Google Play and some other apps where having issues, so I decided to downgrade. After testing a couple of different ROMs, I got stuck on the blue logo, an infinite booting screen. Funny enough, I think the mistake was to install a Fire first generation ROM into a 2nd generation. Anyway, long story short, I've tried everything, Kindle First Aide (won't help because it seems that all the options need me to be in the desktop of the tablet and I can't get there), SDK ADB will see the device but return a device offline... I'm running out of options and don't really know what to do!
Any ideas guys??

You need to push a ROM onto TWRP. You should still be able to access TWRP. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2459498 be glad you did not hard brick it.

[Q] Bricked Kindle Fire HD - is it hopeless?

In November (just about one week after the warranty was up) the $300++ Kindle Fire HD we bought just stopped working. Amazon basically said sorry, your warranty is up - wanna buy another? (no thanks)
When it's turned on, the Kindle Fire logo appears, then the screen goes black. Nothing else.
We've tried the usual tricks. I bought a fastboot cable and tried the KFHD System.img Recovery Tool and all I get is "device not found." My computer doesn't seem to recognize the device at all.
Is there anything else I can try.... or is it just a lost cause??

first of all, is it a 8.9 inch? if so DO NOT use fastboot cable, it can actually CAUSE damage to 8.9 incher. you just need the regular microUSB that came with your kindle. "special" fastboot cables are only required for the 7 incher... if you have the 8.9 inch "jem" i can try to point you to a few threads that may help unbrick it.
Mike
Thanks... Yes it is 8.9! I'd greatly appreciate any help!!
Anybody?
If I could get a computer to recognize the Kindle, I'm sure I could apply some of the fixes and find something to get it going again. It doesn't show up in device manager and makes an 'error' sound.
You can recover from this but first i will need to know how you bricked it, which operating system do you have, and do you have a sdk installed.
A few moths ago i ran into the same problem but now my kindle is working just fine.
DO NOT USE THE FASTBOOT CABLE TO DO ANYTHING IT CAN DAMAGE YOUR KINDLE

In an attempt to not start new threads where they aren't needed. I'm in a very similar boat, so here are the answers to your questions:
I was attempting to flash CM11 to my 8.9 Kindle. I was following the following instructions:
wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_otter2
Parts 1-6 of Step 1 completed successfully, and somewhere between Step 1 and 3 the screen turned off. I have not yet been able to get the screen to turn on again or the device to light up when charging or anything.
Thoughts?

Can you get into fastboot? I was able to recover mine by restoring my backup and then starting over with pushing stack and all that stuff. So getinto adb wtih the getvar, then just plug a normal cable into the kindle, and see if your PC recognizes it, and it drops into fastboot.
turn off your device and then connect your normal cable then type
fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product
in your cmd or shell (if you are using linux or unix based operating system)
it should show
< waiting for device >
then turn on your device
it should go into fastboot then download the neccery files follow step 5 form the link

and
follow the installation for cyanogenmod from

I'm on Windows with minimal adb and fastboot. I get the < waiting for device > but when I plug in in my tablet nothing happens on either end. It doesn't matter if I have the device plugged in before or after running the command.

By get into fastboot, I assume you mean with the command skullarc referenced since there is no button combination one can use to get into fastboot? Then your answer is shown above. The device has been completely unresponsive to anything I throw its way so far.
when you turn on your kindle what does it show?
If it does not even turn on then press the power button continuously for 20-30 seconds. Then press the power button again

Ohhhh...Sorry for being confused.
following these steps, I was able to successfully complete all of step 1, step 2, and step 3. it was in recovery while I was reading up on the "Installing CyanogenMod from recovery" section and when I looked back at the device, the screen had gone black. Since then I have not gotten it to do anything.

Did you check the md5sum for the files that you flashed in step 3 and downloaded in step 2
it will tell you if they are corrupt

Amazon fire phone stuck at boot logo and cant access to recovery mode.

I was recently planning to install Miui 7 on my Fire Phone. So, i installed safestrap 4.01.
1. I opened safestrap recovery mode
2. I wiped (First screen of Safestrap recovery mode)
3. I installed Cleansystempartition.zip
and then i don't know why, but i lost my mind and decided not to install Miui 7 and i went back and clicked on reboot.
So, now my Amazon Fire phone is stuck at boot logo and i can't even enter recovery mode.
It doesn't respond when connected to PC. It is charging and again when i boot again get stuck on boot logo.
Please reply ASAP.

Thanks for your time, but i couldn't understand how ADB is used. I installed adb drivers (tried bunch of times) but can't figure out how to do steps you suggested.
Could you please elaborate in detailed step-by-step, or provide me some revalent link so that I (noob) could understand easily. Once again thanks for help !
Code:
Is there any way i can ensure that proper drivers are installed for my Fire Phone?
Since i understood how adb is used, I categorized further remaining problem into two type:-
1. If I hadn't installed right drivers...
I tried installing driver from different source but i failed (i guess).
So anyone can provide me link for Drivers for Fire Phone?
2. If i have installed right drivers then :
I tried steps as you suggested but my phone won't boot into recovery mode. When i connect Phone to my pc holding volume + , It shows charging symbol as usual.
If i am doing the process in wrong way, please correct me. I will be waiting for helps...:crying:

Your only hope to revive this phone is to get into the stock recovery.
If you wiped the stock recovery or messed with it then your screwed as there is no PC flashtool like odin, spflashtool, etc etc that works on the fire phone that I am aware of so you need the stock recovery to be functional.
To get into recovery re-read post #2 HERE very carefully on how to do it. :fingers-crossed:
There is no need to PM me just simply quote me in this thread and I will then get notified.
You also need to provide as much info as possible things such as screenshots, photo's, Videos, logs etc etc as these will help when people try to assist you.
Once you are in stock recovery we can move on.

Weirdly enough -my gfs fire phone started exhibiting the same exact issue just yesterday(amazon logo blinks on start up and doesnt go any further no matter how long you wait) and this is the first link google gave on the problem. Did anyone find a resolution to this? She loves this phone and I already replaced battery once few months ago.
