I have a i747m with stock 4.4.2 and I was wondering if I could straight up downgrade odin to 4.3 or is there anyway I could?

Yup. You can flash older roms, but thats it.

does this mean that you can flash any other custom rom even if tis base on 4.3 and lower version?
Yes. Custom roms generally only include the system and kernel, so your base firmware would remain at 4.4.2.
If you go too old though, such as flashing 4.0.4 or 4.1.1 roms, theres no guarantee they wont be a bit buggy. But they should still run nonetheless.
The thing to keep in mind though, is it is ok to flash older roms, kernels and recoveries, but nothing else.

If it's a new device with mk3 on it then odds are you have the Knox bootloader so you cannot flash anything lower than 4.3. Boot into download mode and if you see 'warranty bit 1 or 0' you can only flash 4.3 or higher roms.

OK, don't flash any rom that is below version 4.3, you'll end up with a brick.

A point of clarification, you can still flash any ROM from any Android build you desire-4.1.2, 4.3, 4.4. The danger is when you try to use Odin to push an older firmware which contains a different, non-Knox bootloader. That is when Knox will step in and brick your phone. Flashing custom ROM's via recovery is harmless.
For some reason I thought any lower version was a bad idea, not just Odin flashes. But after I read your reply I remember that, thanks.

From a personal standpoint, even though I don't have Knox, I just wouldn't want to go backwards anyway! That is what is fun and exciting about Android, is the new builds with new features, constantly improving on the past builds!

I flashed back to 4.1.2, my phone was not happy with 4.3 at all. Bad call quality, randomly never connecting to calls, various things acted unstable with various kernels. I love the features of 4.3, but 4.1.2 just works better for me.

Definitely a matter of YMMV for sure! I have been loving KitKat, but 4.3 did work nicely for me as well. I also rarely use anything TW based as well, so that could make a difference too.
I'm totally new here, and I need help. I have installed cm11 on my GS3 because the stock 4.3 OTA had terrible battery life. I tried flashing back with odin and it didn't work, I want to go back to stock only because of the 4.4 Kitkat update that should be coming "soon". I am afraid of bricking my device and odin keeps giving me a fail (auth) error :crying::crying::crying:. This is extremely frustrating and I hope you guys can save me. How can I get back to stock without bricking my device?

Are you using an AT&T s3? You're probably getting the failure in Odin because you have a 4.3 bootloader and the ROM you're flashing may be trying to downgrade the bootloader.

Yes, sorry i forgot to specify that I am indeed using an AT&T s3. So if I get the actual 4.3 rom and attempt to flash it, it should work? I just realized the rom I was attempting to flash was 4.1.1. I am just not with it today.

There is no full AT&T 4.3 ROM. AT&T released 4.3 via an OTA update. The full ROM has never been released.

You could try, but it recommends starting from a stock ROM or stock-based ROM.
Alternatively, you could flash another custom KK ROM for now and load a custom KK ROM that's based on the official release in the future.
The Valudis and Cyanfox ROMs are supposed to be quite good for battery life.

Hello,
I have been flashing some different roms lately, and I really wanted to stay on a 4.3 rom because 4.4 roms are having bluetooth issues, and I cannot connect it with my car.
When I flash a 4.3 rom like Slimbean or CM 10.2. I always get random reboots. It will happen if its just sitting there, or if I am doing something.
I've done a full reset, format, and flash, and I even let it just sit with nothing installed after the flash, but it still reboots randomly. I read a thread about the kernel being a problems. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thank you,
- |-Goku-|
I have no issues with CM 10.2 and I am running the kernel that comes with it. What bootloader are you on?

Okay, you're running a 4.3 bootloader which means you cannot downgrade the bootloader. Attempting to do so could brick your phone.
I recommend that you install the latest CWM and flash a ROM based on TW 4.3. I believe Slimbean is based on a CM.

Sounds good. Do you have any recommendations for a TW 4.3 rom? And would you have any guess as to why it would be randomly rebooting?
There are a few TW-based ROMs in the development section. I would start there.

Hey guys
I installed a nightly of CM11 a while ago and it broke my LTE. The consensus is that you need to install a stock-based ROM, then flash back to CM11 to get LTE working again.
I have flashed an MK5 modem, but am unsure of my bootloader compatibility with the current TouchWiz ROM's out there.
I am on the MF1 bootloader (Canadian phone). Do I need to upgrade/downgrade my bootloader to install any of these TW ROM's? Or can I just flash between TW and CM11 to my heart's consent?
The ROM's say you must be running a 4.3 modem and bootloader...but I can't find any info on whether or not MF1 is a 4.3 bootloader or not?
Thanks,
Elliott
Bump
I haven't tried cm11 yet but using c-rom I had these problems. under settings-mobile networks-preferred network type, check to see the right network is selected. If you don't have these options then my apologies.

MF1 is 4.1.2. The latest Canadian bootloader is MK5 (Which you can't downgrade from).

Well usually you need the same modem as your bootloaders. Some of them are really picky so having the MK5 might be why your LTE isn't working.
You can grab the stock ROM in the general stickies and flash it with Odin though (make sure to backup) if flashing a 4.1.2 modem doesn't fix it.

Only the downgrade is dangerous, you can upgrade without any problem. That being said, you could just flash the stock 4.1.2.
And if I flash a stock based ROM will it upgrade my bootloader to one I won't be able to downgrade from?
Any suggestions for ROM's?

It depends which one you decide to flash. You can flash stock 4.1.2 just like you could flash 4.3 (which you can't downgrade from).
I am trying to upgrade an S3 from an older kit kat aosp rom to a 5.0+ rom. The phone is still on the UCDMG2 bootloader/baseband combo. I kept it on that version to keep my unlocked bootloader and not worry about all this e-fuse stuff going on.
So here is the problem. 5.0 roms flash ok, but say I have no signal. I am able to make phone calls and send text messages, but I have no data. Is there a modem I can flash that will work on 5.0+ roms with the old bootloader? I have been sifting through the various modem/bootloader threads with no luck. Any suggestions on how to obtain data?

as i understand it , and could be completely wrong , but bootloaders and modems should always match. have you tried a different kernel ?

Ok good to know. So once you upgrade, you don't have to unlock the bootloader to flash recovery/rom?
Edit: sorry, dumb question.
After upgrading to the mjb or newer bootloader, you cannot downgrade the bootloader to an older version. Also, the upgraded bootloader will remain unlocked so you can easily flash a custom recovery in Odin.

Can you point me towards the best way to upgrade? I have found some flashable zips, but would prefer to do it through Odin.
I think the safest way to get to the newest bootloader and modem would be to use the 4.1.1 firmware on sammobile.com to flash back to stock in Odin. Once you set up the ROM on your phone, run the OTA updates until you have the latest modem and bootloader. It the slowest way to do but, in my opinion, the safest.
If you phone is not sim unlocked, you can use the free method to permanently unlock the phone while you are on stock 4.1.1.
Once you are on the latest ROM, you could install a custom recovery, create a nandroid backup of the stock ROM, and then flash a custom ROM.

You should run through the free unlock method after you flash back to stock. Even if the phone is already unlocked, it won't re lock.
