[Q] Still have S-OFF, how to root from 2.3.4? - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Hi Folks,
It's been awhile, but I'm trying to remove bloat from our old Incredible 2 and it still retains S-OFF from using Revolutionary years ago.
The only methods I've read in this forum to root the Inc2 involve downgrading to 2.3.3 first, then rooting. I haven't looked at re-rooting this device in awhile, obviously.
Guess my question is if I can avoid downgrading and do something a bit more direct. Ideas welcome!
Thanks.

As far as I know, you still have to downgrade to 2.3.3. It's not hard. Just follow the steps.

Yes, it's not hard, I just wanted a faster path.
Now to get the darn thing to connect via USB, since the single-click solution I tried apparently messed things up.

If you can't get USB to work, you have three other options.
Download the zip file using your phone's web browser instead of your computer. Unzip the tacoroot file on the phone, and inside it will be a zip file for the 2.3.3 RUU (ROM Update Utility). Rename it to PG32IMG.zip.
If you have the file on your computer, take the SD card out of the phone and put it in your computer's SD card reader. Then put PG32IMG.zip (see option #1) on the SD card and put the card back into the phone.
If the is on your computer but you don't have an SD card reader, install ES File Explorer on the phone and then transfer PG32IMG.zip (see option #1) to the phone using either an SMB share on the computer or the ES File Explorer's FTP server (called Remote Manager in the left sidebar). Option #1 is less work, but this way wastes less bandwidth if you already have the file on your computer, because it would be file transfer over the local network instead of over the Internet.
Once you have PG32IMG.zip at the top level of your SD card, restart the phone while holding down power and volume down. This should take you to the bootloader. Inside the bootloader (or maybe fastboot, which you can get to from the bootloader), the phone will scan the SD card, detect the PG32IMG.zip file, and ask if you want to install the update. Plug the phone into a charger, then say yes. DO NOT POWER OFF THE PHONE WHILE IT INSTALLS THE RUU.
Restart the phone. The phone will now be in a fully factory default state with 2.3.3 but will still have S-OFF. In other words, the 2.3.3 RUU should solve the USB problem you mentioned.
Remove PG32IMG.zip from SD card, using either your computer or a file manager app such as ES File Explorer. Install TWRP custom recovery using the "Download - Recovery Image Method" steps on this page: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/71
Once TWRP Recovery is installed, you'll be able to use it to install custom ROMs, kernels, gapps, etc. Other custom recoveries you could use include the latest version of 4EXT or the latest version of ClockworkMod.

RUU on a Mac

Ive seen the program OpenRUU but can anyone tell me how to use it?
i want to flash from software 2.09 to 2.10 or above? is this possible? im rooted thru unrevoked but running a stock rom. Other than a gold card do i need anything else to use this program? and even if the ruu fails, it will not damage my phone?
thanks, adbird
EDIT: Actually do i need a gold card, my phone used to be branded under telus, but then i flashed a couple roms and eventually flashed the stock WWE rom, so do i need a gold card?
I have no experience with Mac but if you can't use a RUU, there is the PB99IMG.zip(which you can find using windows when the RUU is extracted) method which functions pretty much the same.
As for the gold card, you do need one, - debranding a branded handset doesn't make it unbranded .
Some people confuse "debranded" and "unbranded".
k thanks i guess i gotta go buy another sd card :/
There is no problem in making your regular card in the device, your goldcard, i.e., you don't need a dedicated microSD for gold card use exclusively .
but isnt clockworkmod kept on the sd? what if you format it
If I understand you correctly, you want to flash "2.10 or above".
Make a your card a goldcard ;
Put the ROM you want to install in the root of the memory card (/sdcard/ - in other words it should not be in any folder);
Make sure that the rom is renamed from something like "PB99IMG_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.2_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.zip" to "PB99IMG.zip" (zip is the extension, not part of the name);
Turn off the phone;
Turn on the phone while holding volume down, it should be recognized and you'll be asked to apply it.
will that unroot the device?
This might work for you
It helps flashing RUU's
WAIT, BEFORE YOU START, CREATE A GOLDCARD. IT IS VERY NECESSARY. THINGS WILL GO WRONG IF YOU DONT.
EDIT: YOU MUST BE ABLE TO BOOT GO TO THE BOOTLOADER MENU.
Firstly, download this file. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13240777/Desire Downgrade.ZIP
Extract the files.
Transfer the file PB99IMG to the root of your SD card (It is located in the extracted files)
Secondly, disconnect your phone and turn it off.
After that boot up your phone while pressing the volume down button and the power button.
The bootloader should be checking for files after awhile and once it found the file that is supposed to be in the root of your sd card, press the volume up button (NOT EXACTLY SURE, SHOULD BE THE ONE THAT SAYS YES AND CONTINUE)
It should be writing files to your phone. and replaces everything. E.G: HBOOT, RECOVERY,RADIO and such.
It should be writing files successfully and then it would ask you to reboot. Continue with the reboot and you should be having your Desire back to stock. Perfect.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE ARE RISKS INVOLVED LIKE FAILURE OF WRITING TO THE HBOOT. PLEASE REMEMBER TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. MAINLY, DO NOT BLAME ME FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES WRONG.
FINALLY, YOU SHOULD BE READING EVERYTHING UP TO HERE AND THAT YOU MUST HAVE A GOLDCARD (A GOLD SD CARD)
Hope this helps you and please ask if you have further questions. PM me if the questions cannot be answered here. Good Luck

Yes, flashing a RUU unroots the phone.
But rooting again is easy.

[Q] Unrevoked Loop

I need help and in a bad way.
I tried rooting my phone tonight. I ran the latest version of unrevoked tonight and I can't seem to get off the boot menu that pops up. Everytime I hit Bootloader then Fastboot, I go back to the main menu. Recovery I get an error on the restart, clear storage does nothing, im scared to try simlock. Everything else doesn't do a thing for me. Any help would be amazing.
So your phone won't boot normally at all?
That is correct
The first thing I would try is in recovery make a back up (if it lets you). Then try restoring that recovery. If not I would download a ROM whatever you choose, I have the Redemption Rom 2.2. Put it on the root of your sd card, obviously you are going to have to do this on your PC with a card reader, or if you have another phone that you can put it in it and use the usb cable. Then in recovery go to flash zip from sd card and choose the ROM. This all assuming that everything in the recovery screen works. Hopefully this at least gets your phone booting up. If it does then you're golden and can always go back to stock whenever you choose.
I sounds to me like you can't even get into recovery so that isn't an option.. this is what you do. Download this RUU file. http://dougpiston.com/files/RUU/RUU_Incredible_C_Froyo_VERIZON_WWE_3.26.605.1_Radio_2.15.00.07.28_2k4k_NV_1.70_PRL58006_release_152016_signed.exe
Then open the RUU that you just downloaded. Normally you would run this with your phone booted but since that doesn't work. you need to do ctrl/alt/delete and get to start windows task manager. go to Processes, find and right-click adb.exe and find containing folder. This will bring you to were the "rom.zip" is help, pull that file and put it on your desktop. now, you can close the windows task manager, and the RUU. rename that file on your desktop from either "rom.zip" or "rom" to "PB31IMG.zip" or "PB31IMG" whichever your computer shows, just make sure not to put .zip.zip without knowing.
now, turn off phone, take off back and take out sd card, (hopefully you have an adapter, or another phone you can use? anything to hook it up to the computer since you can't with your phone?, and get that PB file on the SD Card, no folder just right on top and make sure it's formatted to Fat32. put it back in phone, hold vol down and power, let the phone do it's thing, and you're now un-rooted.
Here is the RUU as a PBIMG31.zip already. Just change name to PBIMG31.zip place it in the ROOT(in no subfolders) of your SD card then when HBOOT loads start the update and it should automatically go back to to stock.
PBIMG31.zip download
Thanks bradatz, that worked well

[Q] problems trying to get rid of superuser

I am having troble unrooting an evo 4g. I got to the s-on part, but can't get the phone to recognize the PC36IMG.zip file. I've tried a couple of these ruu files, thinking that most of those might not be working properly. The ultimate goal, really, is to get rid of the superuser permissions. I am trying to sent the phone back to Sprint and am afraid that they might see it. I've tried downloading Terminal Emulator. However, everytime i put rm superuser.apk, the response i get is that it can not be done because it's a read-only file. any suggestions?
if the s lock is on you wont be able to get rid of it. How are you trying to get it to read the PC36IMG.zip because if you have it on the root of your sd card and restart into bootloader it will automatically read the zip and ask to flash it if not just do a clear storage and that should solve it

You need to run ruu now that you're S on. As was noted already, the PC36IMG must be on the main directoryof your SD card. Also, make sure the file isn't named PC36IMG.zip.zip. If you're using windows, then the file extension is hidden, and the .zip is already there, just hidden. Therefore, if you add a .zip, then its really there twice. So using windows, it should just look like PC36IMG. Once its named correctly, and on the main directory of your SD card, the bootloader should detect it and ask you to update.

Copy all of the data on your sdcard to your pc desktop and then reformat the card. Now place the RUU file on the root of the sdcard and if the phone doesnt recognize it in the bootloader menu, then it might mean your sdcard isnt "good" enough. I had the same problem with a class 2 card and i had to buy a whole new sdcard for it to work.
I've checked and made sure that the file name is right. When i put the phone in bootloader it doesn't recognize anything. nothing pop up to ask yes/ no.
Like I said, read my previous post. Format the card and try again. If it doesnt work, then try it with another sdcard.
Also, do you think it would be a problem to send in the phone with superuser on it still?
p.s. i tried to get it out after i re-rooted it and the s was off.
Thank you for the helps.
You can't send the phone in rooted period. Flash that unrevoked s-on utility again to get it back to s-on. Borrow somebodies sdcard and put the RUU file on it. Then flash the RUU in bootloader when the phone recognizes it. I STRONGLY believe that its your sdcard acting funny because it happened to me too.

I agree. If the OP is sure the file is on the main directory of his card, and its named properly, yet it wont read it...then formatting the card would also be my recommendation.

[q] help with hboot

I'm attempting to Unroot my Evo because I've all of a sudden had issues with Data Connectivity while running MIUI.
I've already flashed the unrevoked-s-on tool, and now I'm trying to flash the PC36IMG but my Hboot does not check for it at all?
I'm sure the IMG is on my SD card, any help will be greatly appreciated.

There are a couple things required to be sure that your bootloader will scan and find the PC36IMG. One, the file has to be on the main directory of your sd card. It cannot be in any folders. Two, it has to be named exactly PC36IMG.zip. If you use windows to look at the file, it should appear as just PC36IMG, because windows hides the file extension (.zip), although it's really there. If that's the case, and you happened to add a .zip, it would really be named PC36IMG.zip.zip, which would cause the bootloader to not find it when it scans. So basically, be sure it's named correctly, and it's in the correct location (main directory of the sd card). If those two criteria are met, it should find it, and ask you to update. If it still doesn't scan and find it, you should re download the file, because it could be corrupt.
Also, you need to be sure that you are indeed in the bootloader, and not in fastboot. If you see 'bootloader' as one of the menu options, you aren't in the bootloader, and your in fastboot. If that's the case, select 'bootloader'. Good luck.

Stuck on installing ROM from SD card

From this thread
I n s t a l l a t i o n (if you are coming from another ROM):
1. Download ROM file and place it on SD card
2. Download and flash kernel you like (or not, if you have locked bootloader)
3. Download WiFi Modules of chosen kernel and place them on sdcard
4. Go to CWM Recovery.
5. Wipe data and cache!
6. Flash zip with ROM
7. Flash zip with WiFi modules
8. Reboot and enjoy!

How do you do number 1? Does it litterally mean just place it anywhere on the SD card or do you somehow install it (with flashtools?). I've got a locked boot loader.
Plug your phone into the computer with the USB cord.
In the status bar of your phone you will see USB connected. Tap on the USB connected notification, then at the bottom tap Turn on usb storage.
Copy the rom on your computer, open my computer, select the phones SD card and copy it to that folder (the root folder)
With a locked bootloader you are unable to do number 2 (flash Kernel) so this particular rom is not for you.
If you don't understand, how to copy to sd card, may i suggest a bit more reading/study before flashing.
Good luck.
EDIT: #2 allows for a locked bootloader. you can install rom.

Thanks but you misunderstand my question. "Download ROM file and place it on SD card" well that doesn't do anything you just have the files sitting there. At no step does it say how to actually install them? Am I missing something?

You said you were stuck on point 1, that's been explained, now follow the other steps, if you don't understand them then read the guides and stickys.
