have asked the same question a million times in different forums with NO LUCK...yet. I will send a 64mb micro-sd card to ANYONE who can tell me how to do this (and have it actually work)...
I do a LOT of SMS texting for work - I find it cumversome to go to messaging>messages>menu>options>new text...etc. I would LOVE to assign one of my home screen/today screen soft keys to open up my SMS inbox OR open a new, blank SMS ready to send.
Like I said, if anyone can give me instructions on how or an app that will accomplish this, it may not be much, but I will send a new 64mb micro-sd FREE Thanks in advance...

i think i responded to your post. try this app. simply unzip, copy and paste in your programs folder (ppc). it works well with my u1000 using a wm 6.1 rom.
hope it works. and if it does, no worries about the free card as help is supposed to be free
cheers
Don't double post man; it only brings clutter and confusion :O.
I don't mean to be a ***** but 64MB is obsolete in my country, and I come from a backward 2nd world country in asia.
I also read in development and hacking forum, those guys managed to open a new sms screen via their softkeys and also install the Touch Dual's launcher to open new email, sms and mms.
rough crowd...
man I'll tell ya - this is a rough crowd. 64mb isn't much I agree but c'mon - it was just a free card? I give up - time to move to another forum and hopefully get help rather than this...

We're more than happy to help you, just that some people want you to read (you should) the wiki. Anyways, i was going to answer the problem here, but found you on the ATT forums and answered it first here. Hope that helps

I just want to remind you that you have said "anyone" and not "the first one". So if 200 people tell you how to do this, even if they all say the same thing, you have promised to send each of them a 64mb micro-sd card.

Hello guys,
Just received my device today and I am loving it to bits. Just one question tho and I haven't seen anyone asking this question.
When you go into SMS messages tab and click on new message. When I click on the 'to:' field, a numeral keyboard on screen keyboard is forced to be used (even tho I have chose full QWERTY keyboard). Haven anyone noticed that? That is the weird part but if you look closely, there is a 'P' and a 'W' key as well. Why those keys and no other keys.
I used to be able to type in the name of the recipient, now I have to use the hardware keyboard to do so, (I would like to have the option to use a soft keyboard, although I love the hardware one).
Also, I have noticed that the Numeral Pad for typing messages have now gone. It used to be on the HD. I thought it was quite useful when if was on the HD and find it was a good way for t9 messaging with one hand.
Anyone noticed?
Anyone????
Anyone knows what the keys P and W is for when entering receipiant details? I don't mind it but I just wanted to know why P and W and not any other letters.
P: Pause (1sec Pause before sending the tones)
W: Wait (doesn't seem to work on WM - on nokia phones there was a new dialog coming up - and you could decide when you'd like to send the remainig numbers)
Sorry double post

Thanks a lot mate!
This is the first time I have seen this on a keypad. Never knew you need those keys.
But why would you need to pause before sending the tone?

sometimes u need this for using gateway services where it will ask for password/id before the phone number dialled (VOIP, teleconferance use etc)
you need the pause key; else the system will treat is as a very long number and ended up error

Cheers mate. That is really something I didn't know. Never used such systems or ever needed such a function.
You have enlightened me today!
can someone please provide some info about the t9 keypad that is missing....?
Is there someway to get t9 keypad like on the diamond 2?
I just bought this phone and i would be wery sad if there where no option for t9/phonekeys/keypad (onscreen of course)
Thanks...

what do you mean by 160 characters support? did you mean that you don't have support for sending sms MORE than 160 chars? I think the apk already supported 160 chars

greek are consider as double characters in a way..
if a write more than 68 letters it gonna cost me two sms :/
here this friend have mod the stock ics mms.apk (to understand what i am talking about) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591989
It's not about the phone really, when you use national characters the number of characters available in a single SMS is decreased, just as you as you have noted. To combat this, you can turn off the usage of national characters.
To do this, go to Conversations -> Settings
Somewhere at the bottom there's an option called "Cost saving." All you need to do now is check it. Of course, doing this will result in simplified text (no national characters). Personally, I prefer to use national characters even though it is costly.
Edit:
If this is about sending texts with national characters as if they were standard messages (160), then I'm afraid that it's not possible. When you use Greek letters, the message needs to be sent in Unicode. I've once heard about there being a way around it (different encoding I believe) but that would result in some phones converting your Greek characters into question marks.
If anyone possesses some deeper knowledge about this, please share.

to dimitrissd: ahh i got it now.. no it's not possible mate.. and the problem doesnt lies in the conversation.apk.. like sneppahtihs said, it is encoding problem, and it applies almost globally. maybe someone actually can make a mod just like your request, BUT everybody that you regularly contacted thru sms must have that mod also to have the exactly same encoding (beside, they might be using different phone from you also)..

I figured out if I do not include the original message by unchecking that box in the window where I compose the new email, the issue doesn't occur. It only seems to happen when I respond to certain emails...
I am on ATT, Samsung Galaxy S3, Android 4.1.1

I have the same problem with a SG3 and I was looking for a solution for a long time. Believe it or not, I found this answer in a forum for Windows Phones! It is an issue of the length of the subject and for some reason it has to do with Google Sync. It is not a problem of the phone itself.
The only way to correct the problem is the following:
The issue happens when you reply to an email that has a subject in Greek which is more than 23 characters (including the RE: + space before the subject). It also happens when the subject is in English and more that 63 characters are used in total. Try to truncate manually the subject when you reply to a message that has any of the above character limit and you will no longer have the problem!!!
So in short, when you reply to a message, truncate the subject to less than 23 characters (including the RE:_) if the subject is in Greek, or to less than 63 characters (including the RE:_) if the subject is in English, before you send it. I am sure that something similar applies when other languages are used in Subject as well.
Hope it helps.
Thanks You!!!!

So this is only a problem with Gmail on Android or Windows Phone?
Can this happen on iOS do you know? Can it happen with yahoo or anything else?
Would using the Gmail app help do you think?
Thanks!

I am glad I helped! I had this problem since I bought the SGS3 and I could not figure out what the problem was.
As I found out this is a problem of Gmail on Windows and Android Phones. But I repeat, this problem occurs not because of the phone itself, but because of Google Sync (therefore Gmail itself). I really do not know if it can happen on iOS (actually I do not like iphone or anything that come with an "i" in front!).
Also, according to what I found it shouldn't happen with yahoo or any other email provider.
To answer your last question, it shouldn't happen with the Gmail App that is already on the phone. However, I prefer to use the stock email application, so I do not bother truncating the subject when it is too long.

Hi Guys!
I have this issue in messaging app that whenever I am sending a message that is more than 3 pages/message it automatically turns to MMS that is somewhat annoying specially when you need to type a message more than the allowed characters.
The thing is I am on Sir Balliboxer's Odex AMF7 Rom
Can someone help me on this issue I tried the creation mode on the settings, set it on free or restricted still nothing works, Go SMS don't work, then I don't like the Big SMS app.
Can someone help me on this? I'm sure I'm not the only one. Thanks in advance for those who will help me!

Kabayan,
I do a lot of texting so I am familiar. However it is the first time I heard about this problem. I don't(well almost don't) monitor the number of characters anymore as after 160 the message count automatically updates. How it becomes MMS on yours I cannot understand. could you explain further how it converts by itself to MMS? Perhaps there is a setting on the messaging app that you have accidentally ticked?
UPDATE: Apparently there is a 480 character limit set for SMS so after 480 you get converted and there is no solution but to break up your sms so as not to exceed 480 or 160 x 3.....

oh there are a lot of us here. others are just lurking.
You can put an notification when the mms mode is triggered. other than that just watch out when txt count goes to 4.
Since you guys have a galaxy device maybe your secmms.apk is similar to the gs3. Check out the T-Mobile gs3 android dev forum. S we have a whole thread on secmms.apk tweaks.
Also maybe you have a feature.xml if you do them check out our feature.xml tweaks. Both should be able to stop the converting to mms. You only have to do one but can do both.

It may be called that for your phone, for us it's simply feature.xml. Also if you visit our forum there are a couple threads explaining various tweaks you may do to that file and the changes that will be made.

I cannot find anything pertaining to SMS to MMS conversion on that link.
Before switching to Grand I used Galaxy 3 (GT-I5801). In that section Kyrillos had modified the stock apk to prevent conversion of SMS into MMS. He also increased the number of recipients for a SMS. Maybe it will be of some help

Apparently this has been unconfirmed, I'm not entirely sure it works as well but it's such an easy mod that its worth a try. If not then you might wanna try the secmms.apk mod thread. The mods in that thread work 100% no doubt. You can also try just pushing a modded gs3 mms.apk to your phones and see if it works without problems. Who knows it's worth a shot.

I've worked on this to as mine is limited to 140 Characters only.
I found this code:
<CscFeature_Message_MaxSmsByte>140</CscFeature_Message_MaxSmsByte>
I changed it to 480 (3 x 160; 160 is the standard), I was able to type a message 480 characters long and the phone did not convert. I was able to send the message but the recipient was not able to receive it. It is because the phone sent the whole chunk of message as 1 message. The phone should have divided it into parts of messages consisting of 160 characters and the receiving phone should handle the "stitching".
having no luck, I just increased the 140 default setting to 160 and that's all I can do. We have to find a way to make the phone process a multi-part SMS.

Hello All,
I was having the same issue with my Galaxy Grand, so I hope this will help you all:
Go to"Messaging".
Open SMS, tap "Menu button"
Open "Settings"
Scroll down and go to "Text message SMS settings.
Select "Input Mode"
Change it to "GSM alphabet"
Then return to Messaging and test it
Then you`re done.
Hope I help you!
