Can't update ota from Jss15j to jss15q

OK so here's my problem... I'm trying to do some ota updates. my nexus 7 is on jss15j with elementalx kernel, custom 2.6.0.0 twrp recovery, 1.62supersu. I install the zip file from jss15j to jss15q ota update from xda, install the zip supersu fix, go to flash the ota update and it fails every time, no matter what I do. I also tried to flash to stock jss15j kernel and it also fails...
please help, I might just have to wait to get home and use the wug toolkit to flash the ota update but I'd like to be able to in twrp...

Assuming you have some reason you really want to run the ota rather than factory image with nowipe option... And you really want to install jss15q rather than latest jss15r...
Post the exact error message without the funny numbers. Either type or take a photo

OK, I'd love a factory image guide with nonwipe option if possible. latest is great too, I've got a lot of random reboots on jss15r...

Also when I said error log, I meant the error message from installing the ota update.zip. With that error message I can usually tell you why your ota update.zip is failing.

I was able to update this morning. I got home and was able to use the wug toolkit. I flashed back the stock recovery, flashed the stock kernel. Then was able to allow the update to jss15r, then flashed the updated custom twrp recovery, flashed elementalx back and I'm all good to go! Flashing stock recovery probably did it for me, not too much of a hassle. I was thinking I was going to have to do a full wipe...

Your issue was the custom kernel. If it was the OTA update zip and you were doing it via adb sideload, it checks for a stock boot image and if it doesn't find it, it errors out. I had this happen with faux123's kernel installed. I realized it when the error output said something about the boot image.

Every time I click update on my developer mode M8, it restarts automatically in the TWRP recovery mode. I have no choice but to reboot in recovery mode and the phone loads again asking me to update. Has anyone experience this? I am still on the stock ROM withe XPosed installer if that matters. Any suggestions will be appreciated, thank you!

Do you have a TWRP backup? You could restore it in TWRP if so.

I have a some of backups I created manually a couple of days ago but how would a restore of those backups update the system to 1.54.15409? Don't the phone still has to download the system update again?

You are asking for trouble trying to update on rooted, custom recovery and xposed framework installed..

Phone has to be 100% stock, inc. the stock recovery and kernel, to flash an OTA file as it checks to make sure the phone is stock. ANY change to the original system and it'll fail

How can I get to stock? I can't find it anywhere but people saying to do it. (other than Sprint, but i have unlocked)

You have to have firmware that matches your hboot, and stock recovery. Doesn't matter if you are unlocked.

OTA Update on a rooted M8

hello, i need to verify something with you guys.
Currently i'm using an HTC One M8 rooted and running on a stock rom, and TWRP as a recovery, can i still have OTA updates in my phone even if I'm on root and TWRP as a recovery. also one thing how can go remove TWRP recovery or revert to HTC recovery

1. Download the stock recovery for your device from the recovery thread
2. Flash it through fastboot (as you did TWRP)
3. Apply the OTA
4. Reflash TWRP
5. Re-root the phone

guess i'm stuck with my rooted phone then, i rooted my phone using Hansoon2000 All-In-One-Kit
and i can't find my stock rom, my software number is 1.54.707.7

Not stock rom...stock recovery

Look at the bottom of the first post of mr_hofs thread in the general section here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
You'll find your stock recovery there ?

Remember (as said a million times already in multiple threads) - to flash an OTA you CANNOT have changed anything in the original system (fonts, Xposed mods, removing system apps, ANYTHING) otherwise the OTA WILL FAIL

i've browse mr.hofs thread and i've seen lots of stock recoveries. I don't know which stock recovery will I use.
I tried to match it using my software number 1.54.707.7 but there is none. or should i just try the closer to that version?
also another question? can i flash my stock recovery using Hasoon2000's AIO Toolkit? i see here on the left box it's says your own recovery.

Yes, you can! I did it exactly that way - and after OTA update reflashed TWRP and rerouted that way. Its a 4 minute job.

Learn to do it yourself, relying on toolkits is a false economy as if anything goes wrong you'll have no idea how to fix it...

Yes, that has been mentioned quite a few times in various threads..However one question that pops up now is:
Lets says I did make changes to the system files by removing a system app or using xposed mods (but not flashing any custom roms). But these changes were made AFTER taking a backup of (unchanged) stock recovery. Will OTA still fail if i now flash stock recovery and then ota update? I am guessing it should work as i am bringing the phone back to stock status.
Also what if i do not flash any custom recovery, I just boot into it to take a backup and remain in stock rom. In that case, for an OTA update, do i still need to first flash stock recovery if I have not made changes to sys files?
Finally when you say OTA fail, does that mean there is a chance I will brick/soft brick my phone?or is it just an error message. I ask because in case i make changes to sys and then forget about it or do not realise its consequence for an OTA update, its better I know now what I am getting into.

The OTA requires a 100% stock running Android build, so if you have removed any system apps it will just fail and reboot to the ROM you're running at the moment (so you should be safe). Basically, if the /system partition on the phone is ANY way different from how it was when you first bought it the OTA will fail
For example, other than S-OFF my phone is exactly how I received it, therefore the new OTA update installed successfully. If I had removed one system app (e.g. Hangouts), it would fail as it's looking for it and if it can't find it it'll just reboot

i still have my S-OFF here in my HTC, and i haven't removed any system apps. i'll try this later this week.
i just needed my root because of setCPU nothing else.

we'll for example, OTA has been updated and all goes well. now that i have to reflash my recovery to TWRP.

If you're now on 1.54.401.10, you can manually extract it from the firmware package I uploaded HERE

I installed the OTA yesterday and had a different experience. I am with the stock rooted ROM, but I installed Xposed with some modules and the swipe to sleep and no write protection kernel modules. Also, unlocking the bootloader also ate my calculator and torch apps, and I reinstalled them as user apps instead of system apps.
Well, after flashing the stock recovery, the OTA worked like a charm. I applied it manually from the stock recovery, but I don't think this makes a difference. I had to re-root afterwards, but all the rest was preserved.
I am S-OFF though. Is that the reason why it bypassed some security checks?

I can see the apps that were removed during unlocking still working if installed as user apps as they're still on the /data partition. If they weren't there at all then it'd probably fail. Surprised that it worked with Xposed installed, but that's also a user app so it could very well work - logically it makes sense.
As a rule of thumb I'd only apply an OTA on a 100% stock system, that way you know it'll all be fine

If you are s-on, you can't flash anything custom or stock. You will need to root and s-off first. Or you could take the ota if all you want is the update. If you want to get some customization on there...you should do some reading through the threads. Things are a bit different since a few years ago and this phone doesn't have an external sd card...

First link is 100% stock and will work on stock recovery. Just place it on the phone storage or SD and boot to stock recovery. Choose the appropriate "apply update from" and then point to that file.

every time i try to get into the recovery menu i just get a picture of the phone with a red triangle and exclamation point.

Any idea if towelroot works with this update? I noticed that the update notes on the vzw website says "Device root vulnerability issue has been resolved"

That is your stock recovery. Stock recovery is not meant to go into like custom ones. It's used for ota's, factory resets, and that's about it.

When flashing an OTA everything has to be bone stock. If you have stock tethering enabled, Xposed Framework installed, or files missing from /system/apps, it will fail.

That's a bummer. I'm totally stock. Just changed fonts, that's it. Guess it just won't go. thanks

I restored stock recovery and stock hotspot and the OTA still won't install properly -- I'm not sure what I'm missing. Is there any way to flash the OTA when rooted without wiping my phone?

Flash in trwp the full odex ROM. I don't know if updating via ota while rooted will work. I know unlock and s-off doesn't matter from personal experience.

In the past, simply restoring stock recovery, updating normally, and then flashing a custom recovery was enough. Doesn't seem to work this time, or there's simply some customization I've forgotten about.

If I'm not mistaken, just the presence of the su binary can be enough to abort an official ota. If you have the official OTA zip and attempt flashing through the stock recovery and it fails, the error message should give some indication of the problem. The script runs a check on the contents of /system and if anything is off it will fail.

Su is fine. It simply won't work afterwords. Any other system changes will cause it to fail though.

So I have TWRP, root, s-off, and XPosed installed. Verizon sent me the OTA update, but I need to return everything to stock before I do anything with the update? I'm a little dense here...

Disable xposed. Flash stock recovery and take the ota. Then flash custom recovery via Fastboot and flash su.zip in Twrp.
Assuming of course you made no other /system mods other than root and xposed.

Hello, everybuddy, i recently installed twrp via flashify on my g3. Now that i see android L is being released, i would like to get the OTA for that so i have to get back to stock recovery. Can i just flash it via flashify? and if i can what do i flash? and will it be the same as it was before so i can get OTA? im also rooted, will i get eh OTA if i have root? i know it will kill it but i dont care about that, i just want to make sure ill get the OTA

Your best bet will probably be to follow this guide here:

This will take you back to stock. Getting rid of TWRP is not enough to get OTA to successfully install. You also need to unroot and restore any apps that you may have frozen or removed such as CarrierIQ. Additionally remove xposed if running. Again, instead of going through that trouble, it would be easier to get restore to stock since it's a quick flash.
Note: I would not necessarily be in a hurry to take the OTA. It's possible that it may not be easy to obtain root. Thus I would suggest waiting till one of the devs has had the opportunity to review and confirm that root can still be obtained.

i havent removed any apps. just used twrp to check out the pac rom, which was awsome. so i cant just flash the stock recovery?

You still running pac rom? If so OTA will not work. However if you already flashed back to stock and are just rooted, then yes you can unroot and flash back the stock recovery. I believe the stock recovery can be found somewhere here. If I find a link I will post.

thanks thatd be great! yes i nandroided back to my original state. just wanted to see how pure android looked, and it was gorgeous! but i want to save the experience for android L.

Hi, I am looking for flashing stock recovery on my LG G3 Sprint LS990. I believe the same method will work. I am currently running on stock ZVB ROM rooted and TWRP installed as recovery. In the download folder for LS990-ZVB http://downloads.codefi.re/autoprime/LG/LG_G3/LS990/stock_partitions/ZVB, there is no recovery image file, but in ZVA folder there is. I am just wondering if I can flash ZVA folder's recovery image using Flashify to my ZVB ROM LS990 and if that will work.
My LS990 is rooted and currently have TWRP. i get secure boot error when the phone reboots after accepting Android updates installation that come automatically. I believe installing stock recovery will resolve this issue and allow to install Android updates I do not want to going back to stock completely, that will unroot my phone and again I have do all these staffs.
Anyone can help to advise, will be appreciated. Thanks.
