i have a question for you smart devs - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

okay sooooo.....my big bro age 21 got the Verizon S3 which came with 4.4.2. He got the Verizon one, cause he said "I'm gonna be smarter then you and get the best coverage with 4GLTE".....so long story short he wants me to root it and to give him Philz recovery cause that's what im using on my Boost S3. He also wants me to make him a custom splash screen; so basically i got him root with TowelRoot and "disabled" Knox with SuperSU. Now I tried to flash the D2LTE Philz through Odin and it failed, so i did some research and apparently the bootloader is locked.....so i saw there was EZ-unlock but it would Hard Brick if you use it on 4.3 or 4.4.2. Some people on the Verizon S3 Forum Have said to use SafeStrap, but idk since he wants all of his memory and stuff and SafeStrap creates partitions and doesn't really let you install over the stock rom slot. I have no idea if it will flash the custom splash screen i made for his Verizon S3. So my question I guess is will SafeStrap work for the custom things he wants me to do to it???

[Q] some bootloader / root questions

ok I'm not new to rooting and roming I'm coming off a rooted and Romed atrix 4g. My question is I was going to root my att s3 with the s3 root tool kit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665 which allows you to root and flash a custom recovery. but what I didn't see is a way to unlock the bootloader. I didn't know if that would be required, to flash a custom rom, I know I had to do that with my atrix. If so does anyone have any easy link for unlocking the bootloader. also I had heard that some people have had issues after root connecting to att lte. I wouldn't think it would matter since the apn's wouldn't change. thanks ahead of time for any help, and call me a noob if you want, I could care less.
Don't use that as I believe it will trip your flash counter.
Use the no trip root guide located in the android development section.
Also, you do not have to unlock the bootloader, it is already unlocked, you just have to get rooted by flashing with Odin and then install a recovery. I recommend TWRP which can be easily installed through goo manager once you are rooted.
The issues with LTE are not associated with rooting, but rather with flashing AOSP based ROMs but I do believe they have fixed most or all of those issues.
Lastly, I too cane from an Atrix and the S3 is a bazillion times better. I reccommend Triune 2 for a custom ICS ROM (avoid touchwiz JB ROMs for now) and Task650's AOKP ROM. Also, ktoonsez has the best kernel available with up to a 2.1GHz oc.
Cheers, PM me fellow atrix user if you need any other assistance.

yea i saw the other method too. maybe I'll go that way. i wasn't to worried about the whole tripping the flash counter. since it looks like chainfire has a fix. although it sounded like that could be more risky than rooting. thanks for the answer about the bootloader and the lte issues. actually still on the atrix for the moment running nuetrino bc the first night i had the s3 i dropped it and completely cracked the screen. was a little disappointed since i have dropped my atrix countless times and never had an issue. oh well thanks for in store warranties.
Yeah, I've seen some people have had issues using the Triangle Away app, so it's better to just not trip the counter to begin with.

[Q] Zact Mobile - root & flashing

I am creating this thread because I have not found another ZACT rooting/flashing thread yet and I am hopping that a dev will pop in and start working on this, or help walk me through what I can do to get the ball rolling. Check out my first thread, The future of phones is coming
I received 2 phones a few weeks ago now. I wasn't thinking and just jumped the gun and updated to 4.3 on one of them (the other is my fiances and have instructed her NOT to do the update). I am unable to cf-auto-root with the sprint s3 method, so no root. I read if I get the recovery.img from the phone I can post in on Chainfire's cf-auto-root page and he can make a cf-auto-root for the zact s3. I can not get a recovery.img to send in because it is my understanding that to adb pull the recovery I need root. cant get root because I dont have a recovery.img?
I spoke with zact team members a few times. I told them I was having issues with 4.3 and wanted to go back to 4.2.2. A few people were helpful at first. Unfortunately, they are so small, I seem to keep running into the same people, and then they stop trying to help. What I have learned is, they "have confirmed with there Team, that if you process the software downgrade, the Zact software will not work on your phone. This is based upon how our software interfaces with the firmware." SO, that being said we would need to find out what software they have installed and have it integrated into any roms made. Does that sound right?
They also WILL NOT share the MSL. Which is another reason I want root. I still plan on cloning the phone as a backup if I have issues with flashing. but without the msl, i cant change the qualcomm settings to connect to dfs/cdma to back clone it.
I am not a developer, I could use some direction. I feel ZACT will start growing once people realize how much you can save compared to a sprint plan. I have noticed that I get better service then a lot of the people I work with. I am on prl version 24017, which I have not seen before either.

WARNING!! If you process that downgrade, you will trip KNOX security, then your phone will be bricked. Also, ESN cloning is illegal to talk about on XDA.
sent from my GS3
I will trip knox security? What exactly does Knox do, and what do you mean by that? I though Knox just makes it read 0x1 on the odin screen if you flash now? If thats what you mean, I already did that by flashing cf-auto-root. Its my understanding that the boot loader is the issue when downgrading. but on this site, they say that only at&t users should not try it, and technically this is a sprint phone I believe. Just with added software.
If I am wrong please let me know.
Also, I think you mean that it is not acceptable, not illegal. Illegal would imply I could get arrested for commenting about phone cloning on this site. And although cloning your personal phone for your own uses is not illegal, I will not mention it again on these forums. Thanks for the warnings.

Also, I guess I am not necessarily trying to downgrade, just trying to find out what needs to be done so that I can flash or ANYTHING to get away for 4.3 issues. Since the upgrade, my fiance sent me an mms and it has popped up in my messages 5 times, so it looks like she keeps sending it, but I am unable to open it because it wont download.
The more important issue is root. I want to be able to use my root apps to backup, re install my old backups from my last s3, and attempt to get my msl to try and fix the mms issue.

Today has been a productive day so far... using Skunk Ape1's root method "[Tutorial] Rooting the Sprint GalaxyS3 the Easy Way" I was able to get twrp recovery installed. (I wasn't able to do this before because prior the only method i knew was to go to goo.manager and that didn't recognize my device) SO, with twrp installed, i flashed the zip file from Skunk Ape1's root method. Following the instructions to the T everything seemed to work fine. After reboot, I had a knox message popped up, saying "SECURITY NOTICE: Unauthorized access to a secured area has..." I relive that root has been installed but knox is keeping locked up still. I am going to look for this mysterious "Knox remover script" that you will see in the first post on that page, then I will attempt root again.
I have officially given up on root currently. I have tried every root method I can find, my flash counter is somewhere around 13. I was able to use the knox removal script from here If anyone has suggestions for root, I am open to ideas. Thanks.
Finally did it
So, today i was just realizing the lack of space i had on my phone from downloading stuff and photos so i wanted to clean it up. I moved all the important stuff off, and though it would be a good time to factory reset and just have a clean new phone to start over again. ( I missed flashing and this was the closest thing I had) So, during the process of factory resting i wanted to clean everything so i click data, cach, internal external.. system.. yeah well bad idea. my phone rebooted and go stuck on the boot. So i restarted in recovery and reset again and this time is warned me that there was no OS installed... F*ck... Zact customer service wont give me the "custom software" that they installed so im screwed.
After hours of thinking and trying to do stupid odd ball things that i knew wouldnt work. I downloaded a sprint stock 4.3 tar file and odined to my phone. started up fine. works great. so... what zact said about flashing roms bricking this phone was BS.. the only custom thing i have seen was in the zact mobile app that came installed had some extra features used to send usage info and reboot stuff for zact troubleshooting. so with stock sprint rom, and zact mobile app im back to my phone working. AND with that, im going to move on to the rooting, and flashing of this piece of crap. Ill be back with more details later.
I have installed CyanogenMod with full root!!!
well first off, i had the CMinstaller set up but it did not recognize my device so after a while i decided to attempt to cf_auto_root, which seemed to work but failed root checker. I wanted to try another method. I had CMinstaller still up* I was attempting THIS method to root. I was using philz_touch_6.15.4-d2spr.tar.md5 that I flashed using Odin 3.07 (that I have had for a long time on my pc. so google that one)https://www.google.com/search?q=odin+3.07&oq=odin+3.07&aqs=chrome..69i57.3464j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 After i installed Philz touch, i noticed CMinstaller noticed my phone and started downloading system files. I continued what i was doing with the root method and installed DE-SAMSUNGNIZER_KNOX_REMOVAL_SCRIPT_V1.0 and UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.93 just as CMinstaller finished its download, so i said what the hey, and clicked install. next thing i knew i was running cyanogenmod with full root!!! please someone else verify this and let me know if you get it going too.

Stock 4.3 with root
so yeah, just for to check i flashed back to stock 4.3 (not sure who uploaded it but it works) It does have knox so be warned. I then followed the root method in my previous post and it worked fine. i have stock with root. If someone can try it without using that tar file, let me know. Cant really go back once you do it so i cant try the root method with the zact "custom software" myself. Let me know what you find out. Hope this helps someone.
Thanks
Thanks for posting your struggles and successes. With Zact shutting down I was curious about what I could do with my kids' S3s if I don't like the Sprint plan that they are rolling us into. I may be trying this in a couple weeks...

What I would do and have done for my fiance and myself, get on Zact.com live chat ask them to Deactivate your phones. and give them the DEC on the back of the phones. It takes about one min for it to complete per phone. Then go on over to Ting.com and start up a new account with them using your old zact phone. Ting also lists the MSL that i struggled so much trying to get. I would recommend flashing a stock rooted rom debloated, to get all that ZACT crap off your phones. and start out fresh.

Things to consider!

Hi guys I have my galaxy S4 close to a year now and now that I paid off the phone and now im ready to rootand do the whole 9 yards.
So I used to have a htc sensation before and I remember it needed to be s-off in order to gain root access, so does this also applies to my s4 or is rhat just aplicable to htc phone?
Now let me give you guys my specs:
T-mo us SGS4.
Stock rom, untouched.
Stupid knox installed.
Kit kat 4.4.2
Baseband: M919uvufnb4
Secure boot status: Samsung
Device status: official.
So I read that knox trips up and correct me if im wrong it lets samsung knows or something like that so you cant claim for warranty purposes????whats the best custkm recovery for the s4? Cwm or twrp?
So I wanna do:
1. Root
2. Install custom recovery
3. Remove tmo and samsung bloat. (Does anyone know which are safe apps to remove and where to remove them from?)
4. At the end of the day have a fully working S4 rooted with less junk in it.
As I think of more stuff to do I will post, or if you guys have better ideas, steps, or anything just let me know. All your help will be greatly appreciated.

S-Off is an HTC thing. It doesn't apply to Samsung devices.
Knox will be tripped and they COULD prevent you from filing a warrenty claim. But that hasn't been a big deal so far and your phone is outside of warrenty anyway it sounds like.
Search for CF Auto Root. It makes rooting this a really simple 30 second process. (No downgrading firmware and all that jazz that you did on your Sensation using PM5110IMG files or whatever they were called.)
Custom recovery flashes in seconds as well.
You'll have to decide for yourself if you like CWM or TWRP. We don't allow discussions on XDA about 'which is better'. Both have their advantages. It depends on which you like best for your use.
There is a list of 'safe to delete' bloatware around here somewhere. The search feature will help you find it. But you can also just make a Nandroid backup first and delete whatever teh hell you want. If you break it, just restore.

Just a comment on CWM. I tend to use it more but had issues flashing multiple ROMS with it, kept getting an error about "4 arguments accepted, received 5" when it was partitioning. In the M919 developers forum someone recommended TWRP and that did the trick for me. I don't know if its KitKat or s4 related but for now I'd suggest TWRP, CWM has not been working for me.
Thanks bro ill keep that in mind

[Q] So I'm getting a Galaxy Note 2 tomorrow.

I've already bought it. I'm just waiting for it to come in the UPS/FedEx.
Here is the one I bought.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0099QRVZS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I've owned 3 Android devices prior to this. A Samsung Galaxy S, an LG Thrill 4G, and currently I have a Galaxy S3 that's seen better days. I rooted all three of them so I'm no stranger to flashing a custom recovery and ROM.
But as $350 is a lot to drop on a new phone (I had a gift card) I want to make sure I'm doing things right, especially with a new device I've never even operated before.
How do I install a custom recovery on the international Note 2? That's all I'm worried about for now. Because then I can do a complete system backup so I'll have a way to restore in case flashing CyanogenMod somehow ****s up.

Go to the General section, maybe the Q&A section, find easy guides to root. In fact, Chainfire's Auto-Root CF is what you want. There is a process that will install CWM recovery along with root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933542
I really suggest, before trying an AOSP ROM like CM that you first install a current Samsung 4.4.2 ROM. Then you'll be able to experiment with the awesome S-Pen features that were ported from the Note3. Really very excellent and worthy of a look. I will not suggest any because this thread will then become a debating thread over best ROM.
Good luck
i rooted my GN2 on the day i got it using Mskips unified toolkit its so straight forward and can root install custom recovery along with a mirriad of other functions.
Also used his tool root a couple of S3s and s3minis all worked flawlessly

Can the Galaxy Note SM N910A running 6.0.1 be rooted?

I searched the forums and it looks like running a bootunlocker for this AT&T phone might brick it. Has anyone successfully rooted this variant? Thanks.

I just got one of these yesterday (I had a t-mobile one before, but the screen broke a week or so ago) and thought it should be just as easy to root and put CWM or TWRP on it and then a custom rom with root, but I have been seeing conflicting information. It seems that there are only temporary ways to root it? Not sure what is different from the N910A and my old N910T, but obviously there must be something.

the n910a is not root able, and has a locked boot loader. the thing is locked down tight. you can get temp root on older version of android, but its buggy.
this is what I came to look for too
Kingroot isn't working at the moment either
And uhh.. since y'all are kinda talking about it.. a boot loader unlock & root are not the same thing..
Boot Loader unlock would be nice too but there are plenty of devices out there stock rooted that still have a locked Boot loader..
Retarded device
I got a developer edition N910V from Samsung so nice having unlocked bootloader but I got a N910A for stupid cheap and when in download mode says custom but doesn't have a lock on boot screen and the damn thing shuts off for no reason. Got the device it was in safe mode I flash with Odin and it has acted strange. I flashed it 3 times and the last time on boot says AT&T upgrade previously it would just show the android and wouldn't go into recovery without showing upgrading. Is there a possibility that the person I got from tried to root caused issues with the device and maybe it's kinda rooted... also can I clone my aboot from my N910V to this device possibly making it a Frankenstein?.....Noticed a thread called AT&T note 4 keeps freezing and rebooting that others are claimin to have the same issue... is this related and the reply about using wakelock has seamed have fixed the issue. Does this mean the processor is going out and can it be fixed? I can't let mu retarded friend use this device like this he will end up doing something and ***** about it continuing to reboot while writing a text. Thank you for your help.
