[Q] Samsung Galaxy Note 2 SGH-i317 AT&T Question and help - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hello Everyone
I have a Samsung galaxy note 2 from AT&T
I bought it from fry's and it was suppose to be an unlocked phone
any way I rooted the phone and started trying different ROMS
the phone is an AT&T stamped phone and my carrier is T Mobile by a sim card
when you get to the carrier choice on the rom install do you choose AT&T as the carrier or T Mobile???
playing around I have gone both ways to see if it will work
my currant rom I like is the Jedi x20
but when I install Jedi master x2 I can get it installed after two or three try's but then after awhile I lose my data connection and can not get it back!!!!????
I really like the Jedi master x2 but since it is for the t mobile phone I take it it wont work on the at&t phone??

ATT ROMs have worked better for me I've been getting that same issue on T-Mobile ROMs also some reason. I'm more interested in the latest Android features so I've been using PACMAN ROM it has builds for both models anyway. The only feature I miss is WiFi calling but that would force me to be on jellybean and TouchWiz which I hate.

Samsung Galaxy note 2
I am not to savvy on this custom rom stuff
I have read about the knox counter thing and for me I do not care what Samsung thinks
the way I see it is this way like Xbox, PlayStation, and now these cell phones someone somewhere will find a way to
try to make it better faster slicker and to get out from being held by the restrictions ( I was going to say the man But I think you all know what I am trying to say!)
Again my mind might be able to do a lot of thing but figuring out computer code or cell phone code, hacks, tweaks!!! is beyond me!!!
I think a lot of other people are like me!!
question when installing a custom rom with multiple carrier choices do you have to chose the carrier you are currently using or the carrier
the phone came as? like my phone is branded AT&T I have flash my phone both ways one as SGH- i317 AT&T and now as SGH-t889 T Mobile
it seems to be better setup as a t mobile phone
next my android version is 4.1.2
I have flashed this phone with the Jedi Master X2 it seems that this rom is android 4.3 ?? it has wifi calling and everything else my currant rom does not have Jedi x20
I have also read that if you go to android version 4.3 you can not go back to 4.1.2 is this true???
because if you can't then my phone says you can because when Jedi master X2 data stopped working I went back to Jedi X20
my question here is why on Jedi master X2 did my data connection stop working???

You can choose either but the WiFi calling feature is exclusive to T-Mobile. You might have read that if you to to the 4.3 bootloader you can't go back to 4.1.2 the bootloader is entirely different from flashing ROMs. If you're using TWRP to flash the ROM maybe try a different one such as Philz, any Aroma Installer based ROM never flashed properly for me with TWRP.
You could try flashing the latest ATT modem: UCUCNE5 Modem you can flash this at any time and only have to once unless you want to change modems.
Devils kernel is a good kernel to use too it fixed an issue with me not being able to enable WiFi for some reason. Flash the ROM first and let it boot then go back into recovery and wipe Dalvik Cache and flash the kernel: Devil3.4.0.1.4-20140316

[Q] Newbie telus SGS2X owner please help.

Well after a few hours of searching these forums I have learned allot. I am new to android I switched from a blackberry. Now as any eager new phone owner would do I jumped in and rooted my telus galaxy s2x the first day i had it without doing anywhere near enough research. I then had to leave home for work for a long time and decided that I should return my phone to bone stock and start fresh with all the things i had learned. I have scoured these forums and the internet looking for the stock telus rom and kernal. I found links to both but so far have been unable to download them. Dead links? i have odin and have read the guides but without the software i am stuck. So i decided to register and post. now i just hope that someone will take pitty on me and my undeniably mis guided android antics. my current phone info is:
Model number: SGH-T989D
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989DTLKJ3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Build number GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
Now as far as i know I only rooted the phone trying to remove the telus junk and useing LBE privacy gaurd for permissions. No ROM or Kernel tweaking. I am currently running Avast security to but am haveing doubts as to its usefullness. Hope that someone can point me in the right direction and thanks for your time!
The thing with the security, is that its rather hard to have a virus on Linux due to the nature of the system.
Without Root access, there is no access to system files.
I do not run Avast, and have yet to run into issues. Just know what you are installing and what you are granting root access.
First of all, you don't need to go back to stock rom and re-root again if you are willing to use a custom rom. Because, rooting related files resides under specific to your /system and /data directory which are already replaced when you install a custom rom and do a factory reset.
Moroever, if you go back to stock by restoring an original nandroid backup you will most probably like to loose CWM recovery. You probably wouldn't want to double flash CWM if you are going to root your phone again.
What I can recommend you is,
1) After you backup your stuff, do a wipe data/factory reset from CWM. That will allow you start fresh
2) Then, based on what you want to do:
a) If you want to install a custom rom:
Look for the dev forum and choose whatever you want. I am currently using Raverx3x BLACKEDITION ICS and it is awesome.
b) If you want to stick with original rom with root access:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356739
Let me know if I couldn't answer your question.
Thanks
So i did find the stock rom and wiped all data and did a clockwork wipe as well rerooted the phone. So now i am bone stock. Again thank you for all the help. I am going to go with a custom ROM and from the reading i have done they all seem fairly good. Now I am just curious about custom ROM's and how well they work with lets say google play apps as well as some of the others you can get such as LBE. I dunno why but my phone when plugged into the comp wont start the auto play for usb storage and wont show up in the computer tab? weird. unless i run kies or start odin. then the auto play pops and i can see the usb. then windows tells me there is corrupt data on my external usb and if i scan it it closes all the usb stuff and seems to reset itself? i dunno i think that is a comp issue not so much phone. I guess my biggest issue is compatibilty with apps and custom ROM's and the like. Also if I flash a custom rom will that take care of the insane amount of telus and google crap. I dont really need most of what the phone came with but i am leary of deleting apps and system tools that are on the phone. I dunno totally new to android and in quite over my head. more reading i do more questions i have haha.
Idk if that was a phone app thing...
But for future, can you break up those huge paragraphs? Its hard to absorb all that information.
Anyways, I've never had an issue with computer connectivity... Might want to reboot the computer? That's a start at least

I will again suggest ravers rc8 ics rom. I havent seen any issues other than missing wifi calling. No bloatware at all. Rare FCs...
Btw I amnot sure 989-d is also supported by that rom, but worth trying definitely

I am a telus user with the same device... As other user suggested ravers rc8 ics rom... I am using this rom and love this rom.. Works awesome... other than wifi calling and wifi hotspot..

What modem are you using ? the original T989D's is KJ8 I think... ?
I was using it also but only up to RC6 until I switched to Darkside.. it has a t989 kernel but unfortunately required an ICS modem. After I flashed the Tmobile modem, I realized that I no longer have 4g. Its a price I am willing to pay for now.
EDIT: Turns out the modem is fine - only a bug in the ROM that does not display the 4G icon.

I currently have the basic stock ROM unlocked on Koodo so I'd prefer to have a stable wireless signal especially with the tethering hot spot... I think my phone has the KJ3 but you guys have KJ8 modem?
Model number: SGH-T989D
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989DTLKJ3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Build number GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
(pure stock?)
How is the GPS in the Ravers ICS ROM? I basically need a functional GPS and mobile access point (tethering) to work amongst something stable while not being crippled.
I have flashed my old Captivate to the Cognition 4.1 ROM but am definitely a noob to my new SGS2 T989D which is quite a pleasant upgrade

Can I use a jedix t889 rom on my i317

Wondering if this was possible I have been looking at the new JEDI rom however I have tmobile and a ATT branded note 2 (i317) and really looking for the wifi call I onle seen one port and it was this one, but it seems to have quite a bit of trouble still.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2026569
I was wondering if anyone just tried a t889 rom on thier i317 also seen a few people say they have just wanted to hear back from them and how everything works ect.
For instance it was mentioned here I can dont know if anyone has done it though

Yes gsm is the same. Just flash your modem. Correct?

why use a jedi t-mobile rom, if you have the same for at&t.
you need carriers files

It'll work fine. Just make sure you keep you're running an AT&T modem. The ROM itself shouldn't flash another modem, but if it does, just flash back an AT&T modem. I'm also on T-Mobile using an AT&T Note 2. I even flash the bone stock T-Mobile ROM and it ran 100% perfectly out of the box (because I had an AT&T modem on my device). You can enable AWS 3G/4G via a mod here, by the way if you haven't:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2068041
This mod sticks across ROMs, but anytime you flash or reflash a modem, you have to redo the mod.

basic question about unlocked At&t note 2

So, I have an i317 At&t note 2. It was originally on 4.3, but I wanted to unlock it. I followed some forum posts and reverted back to 4.1 and was able to unlock it. It worked with a tmobile sim on 4.1.1, but now when I try to update it (either through Kies or through update on phone), it updates but then gets stuck at the samsung galaxy note 2 display. I found another forum post (thanks, but cant find thread atm ) which had a file to download. I installed that using Odin, but that only got it to work on 4.1.1.
I guess my question is I have the note 2 running on 4.1.1 that I factory unlocked, but now it wont let me update. How do I get 4.3 on it? Thanks
Ok there's plenty of 4.3 Rom's in the development section...
Just have to search for them!
Q: »»»»
Is it rooted?
Do you have a custom recovery installed?
Are you sure your familiar flashing Rom's?
Etc etc etc......

It is not rooted. All I have done to it is downgrade it to 4.1.1, then unlocked it. Is there a stock ROM. I want to be able to go into settings -> about phone -> and update it that way whenever a new version comes out and not have to install custom ROMS. Is that possible?
No, I don't have a custom recovery installed and I am not familiar with flashing Rom's.
I thought I could downgrade to 4.1.1, unlock, then update to the newest stock version through updates in the phone, but thats not the way it works when you unlock the note 2??
thanks
Pardon me if I sound ignorant. I am new to android (switched over from apple a month ago). The note 2 had 4.3 on it. I followed thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014982
to unlock my phone, but had to revert back to 4.1.1 in order to do so. I followed posting
http://wccftech.com/guide-to-downgrade-firmware-on-samsung-galaxy-devices/
to downgrade to 4.1.1. That went successfully and I successfully unlocked the note and all was good. It was running 4.1.1 and I was using a tmobile sim. I went to updates through settings on the phone and tried to update. After that point, it just boots up to "samsung galaxy note 2" screen. I used Odin3 v3.07 to reinstall 4.1.1 and its working again.
I would ideally like to be able to go through software updates on the phone to update it and not need to use custom roms. Is the problem I am trying to update from 4.1.1 to 4.3 and I need to manually update to 4.2.x first, then go to 4.3?
I don't understand why unlocking it prevents me from updating from 4.1.1. I have tried through the phone and through Kies, which keeps getting an error. Does this make sense? Am i doing something wrong? The phone is originally At&t. Do I need an At&t sim inserted to update through the phone?
thanks for all the help and once again, sorry if these questions seems elementary. I am reading through forum posts and trying to understand what all this means. I'm not sure what rooting or flashing means and how flashing is different then unlocking.
Thanks for the help

What is unclear is why ware you trying unlock it, what carrier it was on and what carrier you are changing to,
You're asking if it needs an ATT SIM to update, so I'm lost on what carrier it was on.
The original carrier is at&t. I unlocked it and now am using a tmobile sim. However, when I got to settings and check for updates, it says "checking at&t servers for updates". So it is working for tmobile now, but only on 4.1.1. I don't mind downloading custom roms (and definitely appreciate the work), but I would like the option to not have to.
And when I boot up the phone, even though the network says tmobile, it shows at&t start up screen when it boots up into 4.1.1. Which is why u was thinking maybe the reason it won't do updates through the phone is cause there is no at&t sim inserted when it is "checking at&t server for updates"

Well, over my head here. I think you have figured out technically why it's not working.
You are operating on a T-mobile network and you will not see ATT servers.
Even though it's says you are on T-mobile is anything working? Like texting, surfing or cell calls?
I would imagine texting is not since the config should be pointing at ATT servers.
I would think you should be running one of these factory images
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1969551
I personally do not know if the T-889 is close to the ATT Note 2 model.
You may want to bounce over to this forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-2-tmobile
See if anyone has attempted what you are doing.
In my mind you need to flash a T-mobile image to do what you want.
I am not suggesting you do this, I am merely giving you an opinion.
You may want to investigate this custom ROM

Yeah, I dunno. It's an i317 on at&t. And it was definitely on tmobile cause it let me send text messages and it showed "tmobile" across the top as well as their 4g icon.
All I was trying to do was unlock my at&t note 2. Now its unlocked but stuck to 4.1.1. Lol

It is customized to install for multiple carriers. It's a user configurable install. You can pick which carrier you are, which apps to install etc.
It is 4.3

Switch S4 from AT&T to T-Mobile

I have an S4 from AT&T that is rooted and has a custom rom on it already. SGH-i337 5.0.1 Baseband is MK2 with a custom kernel. I have clockworkmod recovery v6.0.4.4 installed on it currently.
I am moving the family to T-Mobile. I plan to replace my phone with a S6, and then give my S4 to my son. I was wondering about flashing a T-Mobile rom on to the phone. Not sure what to flash for him. It would be nice to keep it so I can flash new roms to it in the future, even though I probably won't. Keeping root would be nice too.
Can anyone tell me what they would do? What ROM? Do I need to change the recovery that is on it? I just want the phone to work for him. He is coming from a Samsung S3 Mini.
Also do I need to do anything with the modem? I assume I could stay with everything just flash a T-Mobile basic ROM, do I need to flash an updated radios for T-Mobile?
Why don't you just sim unlock the phone it cost me $2 on eBay or there maybe a hack to do it but eBay was easiest for me
You don't need to change the ROM. Just put in the Tmobile Sim and get AT&T to unlock Sim card for free if you already spent the time with them.

I need 4.1.1 firmware for Koodo i-317M

Hello guys,
For some reason, my phone shows that my SIM is locked ( I was on RR 6.0). I need to flash the 4.1.1 firmware for Koodo to unlock the SIM.
Can anyone send me a link for this firmware?
Thank you!
You don't need Koodo to unlock the sim. Just flash the stock LJ2 firmware with Odin and use the dialler menu to permanently network unlock the phone.

Maybe this will work: http://rapidgator.net/file/0207e341...yos.com/samsung-galaxy-note-2-stock-firmware/
I know it's been a long time, but did this procedure actually WORK? AFAIK, Koodo Note 2s never came with less than KitKat, and we all know that Samsung has blocked downgrading though its bootloader starting then.
The reason I ask is I'm looking for a spare phone for mine as a backup and can't seem to find one on which I can load my Jellybean 4.1.2 CM based phone image.
Well this an interesting post, I have a similar problem, I have 2 exact Note 2 phones one with custom firmware (4.1.1) one without, I would like to copy/clone the stock firmware to my other (as I somehow managed to delete the stock firmware on it)
Now I have made a backup with TWRP and copied it to the other phone but TWRP refuses to install it, it tries to install and gets most of the way but at the very end I get the 255 error "install failed"
Why can't I copy/ install this backup?
Do I need to to use some other recovery software or make a backup some other way.
Thanks

The note 2 sgh-i317m was used by Telus, Rogers, and Bell.
This downgrade method works. I've used it to network unlock four note 2 models.
The stock 4.1.1 firmware from sammobile.com did not contain a bootloader file which allowed me to flash it using Odin on a phone running a stock 4.4.2 rom.

Man, if this really works it's going to solve all my problems. Are you saying you can flash the 4.1.x ROM on top of the the 4.4.2 bootloader (presumably one could deselect the bootloader from the 4.1.x ROM if it was included - sorry I'm quite rusty at this, haven't used Odin in years), so that the phone may be running ICS or JB despite having a 4.4.2 encrypted (locked) bootloader?
The idea is being able to load Clockworkmod recovery and from it, the rooted 4.1.2 backup on my external sd card...
Sorry if it's been asked before and if I may be confused - Thing is, I haven't done this type of tweaking in 5 years
I could flash a stock 4.1.1 ROM from sammobile.com on top of a stock 4.4.2 ROM because the stock 4.1.1 ROM didn't contain a bootloader. I did this to use the menu method to network unlock the sgh-i317m; however, the phone cannot stay on a stock 4.1.1 ROM with a 4.4.2 bootloader because the phone cannot connect to a cellular network with this 4.1.1 ROM/4.4.2 bootloader combination. After I unlocked the phone, I either re-flashed a stock 4.4.2 ROM or a new custom ROM.
The bootloader on the Canadian Note 2 was never locked the way it was with some USA carriers.

Are you saying the Koodo/Rogers.... 4.4.2 Note 2 bootloader is NOT locked on our phones, ergo, that I could downgrade to 4.1.1 including its bootloader successfully?! If so I'm set, I could purchase a used one on kijiji and simply reload my old Bell based ROM backup on it I simply look for a way to load my 5 year old Rooted ROM onto a newer version of the phone. I have on it apps that won't run on 4.4.2 that I sorely miss on my tablet (which runs 4.4.4)
The bootloader is not locked which allows for the installation of TWRP and cwm but it cannot be downgraded.

In other words it does allow for installing the 4.1.1 ROM for unlocking the phone, but it can't can't actually be used with the 4.1.1 ROM... What if I simply reinstalled the 4.4.2 modem, wouldn't that work?
I now I'm asking quite a lot - but in my case if I haven't been able to find a used phone that hadn't been at some point 'upgraded' and consequently became shackled (I've been looking for over a year now) in which case I might as well mourn it and move on to a new phone and start the fight for freedom all over again Honestly, I've grown tired of having to fight for the basic right of ownership against the relentless push for slavery that is the general trend in technology, to force people away from freedom of using the software they prefer and force them into a system where they must follow the dictates of corporate giants so perfectly exemplified by the cell phone, computer and browser based service industry.
Like Frederick Douglass famously said "Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never had and never will"... In other words if you want freedom and true control, you MUST FIGHT the providers and the manufacturers whose prime interest is to keep you enslaved
Installing the 4.4.2 modem will install but the stock 4.1.1 dialer doesn't work with a 4.4.2 modem and 4.4.2 bootloader from what I recall. It's been a long time since I had a note 2.
