Google Cardboard - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got the kit from Unofficial Cardboard, assembled it and started up the app. The magnetic control button on the side doesn't seem to be working. Has anyone else messed with one of these yet?

update
FYI, in case anyone else buys or constructs one to play with...
After playing with this for a few minutes, I discovered that it will work, but the magnetic button is on the wrong side (it's on the left) to work with the sensor on the phone. That means that the power and volume buttons go down, the camera is on the wrong side for the cutout, the startup menu and some of the apps render upside down. The simple solution is to move the button to the right side of the box.

Hi bigdfmartin.
what is your oppinion about z1c + cardboard? worth of trying ?

Absolutely! You can find the kit for less than $10 now, and the Play Store has a new section just for Cardboard apps. Pretty cool!

is this a common problem?

my xda2s recently experienced a problem which consists of the volume bar keep going up and up making the 'end' noise repeatedly, and if say the volume bar on the side were to be pressed down, it would go down n go up again...
secondly, the power button is not functioning well, it can turn the phone on by clicking it once (as usual) it can turn the backlight on and off by holding it (as usual) but it wont turn off by pressing it once, or anything...
help please, thank you
doesn't happen with any of my 3... sounds like you've got them there problems.
pYroboy,
let me know if you found the resolution. My problems are similar to yours...
Thanks.
doesnt happen to any of my two BA...
try opening up your unit and clean up the contacts.
I did open it, but could not figure out which contact to clean. Power switch is sooooooo freaking small, I did not figure out what I could clean there, it seems that it is 2x4mm in size soldered for good to the board. Same about volume rocker/switch on the side.
How is it possible to clean them??? I could not figure out what could be cleaned there without detaching the switches from the board.
Does anyone sell these parts? Maybe it would be easier (although not easy also because they are so freaking small) to replace them??
Guys, need advice from you... from the ones who fooled around with similar parts...
Thanks.
try an air brush. or a fast evaporating contact cleaner.
just make sure you apply enough pressure not to blow the sensitive parts away.
*just becareful
OK. Thanks. I'll try that. But where do you people get that stuff. Do they sell it in electronics stores, or I need to look someplace else?
I need to do something anyway, because today I can't turn ON. I used timeout of 1 minute on battery power to power it OFF. But not being able to turn the whole thing ON really put me down....
Is there any program to remap Power On/Off button to Recorder or Media Player buttons on the side? They are all 3 the same switches. If it would be possible, I'd get by using one of those buttons.... Just running out of freaking ideas here....
contact cleaners can be found in your local radioshack(i.e. electronics or computer botique/shops).
regarding the power button i think that is hardwired to be the only powerbutton for the unit. sad to say you cant map it to powerup your BA.

Assuming you have the button lock enabled you can wake it up by receiving a phone call, and then disable the button lock and use any button to wake up/turn on the device. This is not the most elegant solution, but if cleaning fails to fix it then it may be your only option.

[Q] Display distorts when sliding keyboard in/out

Hey all-
I'm running CM 7.1.0 RC 1 (long story, but it's the only one where the SYM key still works... otherwise you have go back to 7.0.x) on my MT3GS.
Recently I've noticed that every time I pull out the keyboard, the display gets distorted -- as in, it sort of freezes and fractures along an x-y axis. I've tried all sorts of ways to avoid it, such as flipping it to show landscape and then sliding out the keyboard, but it still manages to break up the screen.
I've also noticed it will do it when you're sliding the keyboard back IN -- same sort of display distortion. The way to remedy it is fairly easy -- just hit the power button to shut the display off/on -- but it's still frustrating.
Anyone else have this issue? Will try to get a screenshot tonight. TIA!
I don't remember such glitches when I was on CM 7.2 so probably it was fixed later. But the sym button was corrupted. Try to keep keylayout files from the working-sym-setup, update to a recent nightly and try to put saved keyboard setup files back to device.
Could be the ribbon cable is loose or worn. I seem to remember several people with similar problems. Search through these forums. I know ive seen several threads on this in the past.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Hoping this helps someone else... Replaced the flex cable ribbon and everything works fine now. I think a replacement cable was <$5 on eBay. Only PITA was removing the sticker screw covers on the slider portion.

Hardware power button pressing itself

I've got a serious problem. My xperia play is pushing the power button itself like crazy. I took it apart and I've blown some air under the plastic chrome button and problem was solved... For a few clicks... Do I have to replace the clicker (not plastic chrome button) in the xperia play itself or what should I do?
Thanks for any useful reply.
refresh
nobody knows anything?...
Lol, weird thing. I stopped using it and suddenly it's working again
I'd say it was dirt or sth but i already disassembled it before writing this thread (not post)
and the problem came back... Any ideas why is that happening?

Any help for stuck power button?

Have had my phone for months, but suddenly the power button stopped working properly.
It's stuck in a recessed state and has no "click" to it anymore. It's very hard to press, but if I use my nail and push it in the power button does feature, but again no "click" or response to the button press. More than anything I am worried about it becoming permanently broken, likely leaving the phone unusable.
Due to some location/warranty issues, I think getting the phone replaced (for now) is near-impossible/not really feasible.
I am in New Zealand where Google doesn't have any presence and I am unsure if any local "phone repair" shops might even be able to fix it - especially if any replacement parts are needed.
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice to try and fix the button myself? It was in a case since day 1 and I cannot recall any single time a drop would have happened or some dirt/sand/etc. would have gotten in and stuck. I used a "rocket blower" I use for my camera gear to just blow the button area, but no change.
Happy to provide more info if needed... all help is more than greatly appreciated!!!

All I can recommend is a soft key power button...on statusbar or navbar. You need to be rooted.
I use Fingerprint Quick Action app but same deal (root I think). With it I assigned double tap to fingerprint reader to turn off the display.
As for power button replacement, iFixit teardown of the XL doesn't look like an easy DIY thing, with display damage a likely scenario during disassembly. Good luck with that.
It's not a fix but for the moment Nova louncher has great gestures to lock the screen swiping up or down, double tap and more.
I know how this sounds, but try sealing your lips around it and give it a good suck. Like you'll feel that you're sucking air through other gaps in the housing. Popped my button out and it's clicking again. Might only be a temporary fix, but it's been a couple of days without an issue for me. Damn thing has been bugging me for about a month, sometimes getting stuck long enough to hard-reboot the phone. Almost felt like there was some sticky **** under the button.

left and right edges of screen don't register touch anymore

It started with it being hard to press 1,q etc keys on keyboard. When I enter developer settings and enable pointer location ,I realise it doesn't register at least hundred pixels on entire left and right sides of screen. Quite annoying. My gf phone is slowly going that way also.. any ideas apart from replace screen or phone? Also around entire edges of phone it looks like screen is delaminating,i.e. a lines and checkers pattern shows....
I have the same problem. It started with a crack, when the phone was bent too much (see picture).
But the unresponsive left edge started later, after I had fixed the phone in a car cradle. Probably the cradle held the phone too hard.
I noticed it because I was using gesture navigation and I couldn't use the back gesture when swiping from the left side. The right side still works in general, but in some apps I have a problem on the top right edge with the 3 button menu button.
You can check your touchscreen in the hardware test menu (*#*#6484#*#*) with test 8 Touchpanel edge.
Also test 7 ITO fails for my device.
Sorry, I have no advice for your problem.
My personal solution for this problem is: I will dump this device, which had hardware problems right from the start (like bluetooth disturbing WLAN) and lots of software bugs, which Xiaomi is not willing to fix. Instead a Pixel 4a will be my daily driver in a few weeks.
My problems also started after bending the entire phone.. was looking at replacement lcd and frames but in reviews they seem to not have proximity sensor..maybe just get a new phone and have this as backup..
