flashaholic's recipe for success [at&t e980] - LG Optimus G Pro

i am not responsible for anything that happens to your phone. ever. period. (redundancy)
i see many fine folks here having a hard time with battery life, deep sleep, etc. i have been flashing something new to my e980 several times a week for many months, and i don't have these issues :fingers-crossed: so i thought i would share the steps i follow. maybe they help, maybe they don't...ymmv. this is best done after work, right about dinner time. :highfive:
DAY 11) start from stock (4.1.2) - this one serves two purposes. first, it's the cleanest way to go. and you know what cleanliness is next to. second, it ensures you know how to TOT or KDZ back to stock in case of emergency. i always use the TOT for the last 4.1.2 - and we have had another user confirm this works better than coming from stock kitkat. you shouldn't be playing with any of the fun toys here if you don't know how to do this. unless you would like a feature phone instead. do i do this everytime? no, but i've done it plenty of times. takes 15 minutes and can fix many broken things. the reason i don't do it everytime is coming up...
2) flash latest "m" build of cyanogenmod - also a dual purpose step. CM is the base of many ROMs, and it helps to clean up your file structure. how? because after you flash the latest CM m build, you are going to wipe your internal storage. but first, take a selfie. a backup selfie. as in backup everything on your sd card, and put it somewhere safe because it sure as heck ain't gonna be on your precious phone anymore. now that you have CM installed on your phone, and a clean sd card, make a backup via recovery. this way, if anything goes wrong you have a backup of the world's most trusted custom ROM installed on your device as a failsafe. pretty smart, huh? :victory:
3) select your ROM & GAPPS might i suggest PAC? whatever you pick, you will likely also need GAPPS. people frequently ask which GAPPS to use. i have tried them all and i personally prefer BANKS' minimal GAPPS (get those here). they have never failed me, and i like going minimal as i believe the more there is to sync after a flash, the worse things can get. do i have scientific evidence? no, but neither did columbus at first. now for the most important part (behind all the other parts)...
4) the flashing of the things! i have an almost religious adherence to this process. mostly because i like my phone to be awesome. in the following order, do this:
[*]backup (should already have done this)
[*]wipe data, system, cache partition, dalvik cache
[*]flash ROM
[*]flash GAPPS
[*]wipe cache partition and dalvik cache
[*]make sure you did all of the previous things
[*]make double-extra-sure!
5) reboot, and go make some tacos seriously...reboot your device and walk away from it. okay, you can watch your pretty new boot ani, but don't touch the #@$% phone! this is super important. your device needs time to commune with it's overlords in the sky. let it do this in peace. you need to wait, at the very minimum, until the screen goes black. then wait a little more. make lots and lots of tacos!
6) setup google account(s) add all of your google accounts that you wish to sync with your phone. this part goes back to why i use banks' GAPPS...no gmail. in my experience, gmail = poopy battery. it syncs like every 17.33 seconds. after that, go enjoy your tacos. alright, you can double check to make sure you still have an IMEI number, but that's it. it's all about the tacos at this point. no playing with the phone. now that it knows who it is, it has questions for it's heavenly masters. give it time to get the answers...or face a lifetime of daddy issues.
7) apns, nfcs, and play store oh my! go to the google play store and turn off notifications and automatic updates. you can manually get your updates every couple days. i promise nobody will die. go into your phone's settings and make sure that your phone's apn is "att lte" or "att phone" and your preferred network type is "lte preferred". now, go to "other" under "wireless & networks". turn off "android beam", then turn off nfc. reboot your phone. who's ready for another plate of tacos?
8) get in bed seriously, you should be sleepy. you've had a big night and a lot of tacos. but before you turn in for the night, go to settings>apps>all>google services framework. clear cache, clear data, and force stop. immediately reboot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache. reboot. your phone may have questions for you when it comes back on. answer these, set your alarm, and sleep tight sweetheart.
if you've done this right, this should take about 4 hours. your phone should've been unplugged this whole time. hopefully it's almost dead. notice what i didn't do? i didn't install 457 apps, the xposed framework, underclock, undervolt, and hardwire a foil antenna to my phone. you just flashed a sweet custom ROM...for your phone, this is the equivalent of being "turned on". would you give your buddy some LSD and then ask him to work a 12 hour day? no! you'd give him a star wars DVD and a bag of cheetohs, then tell him to enjoy his journey on the sofa. now plug your phone in and get some rest, you and your phone have a big day tomorrow.

day 2
remember, these are only recommendations. however, i have flashed every AOSP ROM for the e980 and i get sweet, deep sleep every time. i'm either incredibly lucky or a friggin evil genius. perhaps a little of both?
another note: i keep my phone plugged in all night. i use it all day and try to kill it. i try to make sure it is below 20% when i plug it in and i always let it charge to 100%. but you shouldn't be worried about battery. battery stats are unreliable at best until at least after the first full charge. and it takes a few cycles for the system to settle into it's groove.
now, you will also notice that i didn't restore ANYTHING. i am going to do some restoring. but no apps. no titanium backup of my previous 457 apps and all of their data. i say boo to that. so rise and shine sweet cheeks, you've got some work ahead of you.
DAY 2
1) download some apps - yay! time to play, right? wrong sweetheart! you are going to download some essential applications. first, get your preferred security app, if you have one. if not, i recommend CM security. it's superlightweight (big non-existent word alert!) and super fast. easy on the RAM, easy on the eyes, and highly rated. it scored 100% on the AV-Test. update the virus definitions, and scan everything. but don't set up auto scan. i used to have avast scan me every night and it kept my poor phone up while i snored away.
second, i install supersu from the play store. i install, grant superuser rights to it, and then update the su binary using the TWRP/CWM option. works every time for me on AOSP ROMs. the phone will reboot to recovery, run a script, and then reboot.
next up, i install titanium with the pro license, and google drive. why? because i keep a backup of my sms and call log on my google drive. that way, if my device goes into brick mode, i still have it. i didn't always do it this way, but people get mad if you continually ask them for that piece of hard to find information that they texted you six months ago. but i don't restore ANY APPS. only sms and call log.
2) performance find whatever performance application comes with your ROM. set your governor to interactive and select "set on boot". change your I/O scheduler to deadline, and select "set on boot". hopefully this sticks.
if your ROM doesn't have a performance settings app, then use the one from ROM Toolbox. works for me, and you might need this app in later steps. don't bother with tweaking all the advanced stuff. i've tested both ways, and simply using interactive with deadline has been rock solid for me both performance and battery wise. ymmv - every uses their phone different.
3) extreme measures - these are optional...i have gone without sometimes, but when i have an issue, these always help. first, go flash madmack's modem, found in the op of this thread. note: this is for e980 ONLY! flashing modems is risky business. even worse than tom cruise dancing in tighty whities.
now, go to settings>apps>all>google services framework. clear cache, clear data, and force stop. immediately reboot to recovery. wipe cache, dalvik cache, and fix permissions.
4) go to work! seriously, you're going to be late. don't forget to take the leftover tacos for lunch. you'll thank me later.
use your phone like a human today. you know, regular people who don't constantly fiddle$#%& with their device? you've seen them...talk to those people. i'm not saying don't use your phone. but be gentle with it. it's your phone's first time. buy it dinner first. don't ask for the 3 way right away.

Okay, this isn't really day 3. This will be a place where I put some tips as I think of them, recommended apps, etc. This will be updated as time goes on, so check back every now and then.
Recommended apps (some of these already mentioned, sorry for the redundancy):
CM Security: low resource footprint. Scored 100% on AV test. Super easy user interface. Don't auto scan though. I've never done it with CM, but other AV apps have kept my phone awake after auto scan.
SuperSU: everything just works better. Install, and open. It will say SU binary needs to be updated. When you select a method, you will be prompted to grant superuser access. Click yes. Open SuperSU again and click OK to update the SU binary. I always use the CWM/TWRP method on AOSP ROMs. Let it reboot. Spoiler alert: if you are on nightlies, you will have to do this every time you update.
TWRP from FreeGee: I know...no external SD card. That's why I keep the important $%&+ on my internal. The fact is I haven't met a ROM or zip yet that it failed to flash. But, this is a user preference thing, so doowhutchyalike.
Email: do not use gmail. Even if you have gmail as your email. Gmail syncs like every 4.5 seconds. You can't tell me that doesn't suck battery and CPU. So what do I recommend? The email apk that comes with every AOSP ROM. You can set it to sync at much larger intervals, and it's basically the same app now. Do you really need/want email? [emoji6]
Twitter: use Falcon Pro. Takes a little work to get it going, but is worth it. No notification for when someone favorites your tweet or follows you... But that's what email is for, right? Great for conversation and I'm not sure I've ever seen it show up in battery stats. If you googled enough to be able to flash a custom ROM, you can figure out the trick to getting this installed and running [emoji6]
Facebook: don't.
Browser: use whatever, as long as it isn't Chrome. Chrome syncs like Gmail, every 4.7 seconds. The aosp browser isn't half bad as of late
More later...right now, my beer is empty.

Oh lawdy I love tacos .. And I love deep sleep.. I might try to start all over and get deeepsleep with some PAC. But weird thing is I get deep sleep with my stock Kk backup but whenever a cm or aosp is flashed boom no sleepy time... Lol thanks for the comedic relief and thread ...Maybe I won't be seeing so many questions about the same thing but worded differently about how to do things..... Top of the mornin to ya and balance of the day to ya as well. Cheerz:thumbup::beer:

Nice guide mate. I also have been doing the "Start from Stock thingy" these past few months of flashing. Been using COMMOTIO for about 5 months now. I get deep sleep once in a while.

[Q] Nonstop rebooting, even after full wipe/reinstall - last_kmsg inside

Hey everyone.
I know there's a couple other threads with this problem, but none of them included their last_kmsg files. It took a bunch of tries before I could stay booted up long enough to grab it, but I have one.
I'm getting a significant number of reboots on my EVO. Like almost unusable at times. It seems fairly random, although there's a slight suspicion is has something to do with the GPS. Maps has been a crash-cause before and the most recent bout last night was brought on by foursquare. (the annoying part is I had just used 4sq fine 30 minutes prior with no issues. Then, booted it up, refreshed locations and my phone was unusable for hours.)
I've done all the standard things. Fix permissions, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe data/system, reinstall the latest CM7 build (update-cm-7.0.2.1-Supersonic-signed.zip), wipe cache, wipe dalvik. I entered my google account info but told it not to sync anything. It is now rebooting less than a minute after it starts up. I haven't installed any apps at all since this most recent wipe/reload of CM7. It reboots with and without the sd card installed.
I'm at a loss here and getting incredibly frustrated. Many replies say it's as easy to fix as wipe everything and re-do it. Obviously something abnormal is screwed up on my phone and I can't figure it out.
Here's the pastebin from this morning: pastebin.com/Ki7H8bH3 (Crap, I don't post here enough to be allowed to post links. Just add the http part to that.)
And then when I got awake enough, I did another complete wipe/reload. The rebooting is even worse now, it's taken me almost an hour to get to a point I can install es explorer to try and pull another file. And when I did, it was blank.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
1. Go to the link below and download the PC36IMG.zip file for amon RA v2.3 and place it on the root of your SD card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
2. Shutdown your device.
3. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. There will be a short pause and then a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, the bootloader will automatically detect the PC36IMG.zip file and prompt you to install it. Follow the easy prompts to install. Installation will take less than 10 seconds to complete. Afterwards, reboot into your new recovery. Go to the backup/restore menu and make a nandroid backup of your current setup.
4. Now go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING in it EXCEPT the SD card.
5. Go to the flash menu and flash the rom you desire to flash.
On many occasions, reflashing the recovery solved rebooting issues and hopefully, it will solve yours.

Hi dougjamal,
Thanks for the reply.
I've made some progress. Last night I had done a majority of what you suggested, with installing amon RA. I've also just formatted my entire sd card just to be sure.
I haven't tried wiping things other than cache and dalvik, so I'll try that.
My progress I mentioned is that I had CM7 up and running until I flashed a new kernel and gapps in there. So I guess I'll just stick with the stock CM7 kernel, try your extra wiping and see how that works.
Thanks!

Ugh, it's the randomness of this that has me so frustrated. I thought I had a good install again, I left it sit on the "touch the android" screen for a few minutes and it stayed on. Made it through the setup process ok. I allowed the setup to "auto-download" a handful of the google apps it asks if you want. Once they got to about 38%... boom, restart.
So I did another toooootal wipe and I'll manually install those apps one by one. We'll see...

Don't rule out a corrupt download. If you have the time, download both Salvage-Mod 1.2.1 and the gapps zip from http://www.salvage-mod.com/node/4. If you like CM7, you may like Salvage-Mod. It is pure gingerbread. If you decide to flash it, see whether or not you get bootloops with it.

I re-downloaded CM7 this morning thinking that might be the issue, but it hasn't seemed to help. I'll give a different rom a try probably, maybe there's something other than CM7 I'd be content with.
Whelp, I downloaded SalvageMod and their gapps. Wiped everything, installed salvage, installed gapps, rebooted.
I got through set-up, was ok for a couple minutes, then as I was going into my contacts to see if they had sync'd yet... reboot.
This makes me think this can't be a ROM issue.
Any other ideas?
Does the same thing happen when you run a stock (or close-to-stock) rom? Main reason I ask is that this might actually be some sort of hardware problem, but one of the best ways to test for that is to be running on stock software. I wouldn't necessarily suggest flashing an RUU to get to the latest official release, but there are stock rooted roms out there that you could try.
You probably went with CM specifically to get away from Sense and the default HTC stuff (that's most people's reasons anyway), but if you flash a stock rom and it's still rebooting like that then I'd say chances are REALLY good that it's hardware and that you'd have grounds for getting a replacement phone (just remember to unroot first.)
And if it stops randomly rebooting on you then you'll have at least narrowed things down a bit.

Hey jesuspgt,
I haven't tried that yet. I'll look around for a rooted stock ROM later and give that a shot.
My current status is back to uncertainty. At the moment, my evo has been sitting here fine, not rebooting, for the past hour or two. It's still the Salvage ROM I first installed (i.e. I haven't reinstalled it since it rebooted). Now I haven't really used it any, so it might go to hell as soon as I do that, but for now, it's on and only had that one (maybe two, I can't keep track...) initial reboot.
That's what makes it tricky to diagnose. I know using any custom ROM runs the risk of loosing stability and all ROMs probably produce a reboot here and there. Tough to tell if it's just a "comes with the territory" type of reboot or an actual problem.
Even though I'm sure there's some CM features I'll miss, maybe Salvage is my answer.
Thanks!
*sigh* Well I decided to try using some apps and guess what... reboot.
All I was doing was trying to play a game of Androminion, which is about as basic and not-tasking as possible, so I can't imagine that's what crashed things.
The only thing I can think of that you *may* need to do is reflash your hboot and/or your baseband, PRI & NV from within recovery. You can download it from the link below.

Excellent, I'm going to try that. My hboot is still 0.93!
Hey dougjamal,
Just wanted to drop an update. I know how annoying it is to help someone out and never hear how things ended up!
Who knows what combo helped, but I'm fairly stable now. After updating my hboot, I flashed to Sprint Lovers, did the ##GPSCLRX# trick and then flashed to the latest nightly of CM7 (63 I believe). Only one or two crashes and one bootloop since then.
Of course, as luck would have it, a new problem showed up in the form of a dead spot on my touch screen. Right about where the "Clear" button is for notifications, that entire strip across the phone won't respond to touch. I was hoping it was a nightly issue, but I switched to a different rom and the issue was still there. Looks like it's going in for a warranty claim after-all!
Thanks for all your help

Need some help after bad rom install/reset

I attempted my first rooting and install of darthstalkers rom last night. the step by step instructions were well laid out, and the process was pretty smooth. however after completing the rom install, and began getting various errors such as 'gallery not responding', 'omacp has stopped working',etc. over a dozen different errors in total. kies wouldnt connect to restore my settings, etc.
i decided to flash back to stock, and followed the instructions perfectly, which again were very easy. kies connected instantly on stock, and everything seemed ok. however im still getting the same errors as i was with the darthstalker rom. now i bought my s3 outright (its not part of any package), so i have no warranty issues, however my phone is completely hosed now. i cant send texts, cant view email, nothing. i'm honestly regretting ever doing this.
any help/tips/suggestions so that i can go back to the way i was? ive tried everything that my googlefu has led me to, and nothing has worked.

I did it last night, but in my tired confusion, i may have fudged it up. going to do it now and ill update in a few minutes. Thanks for the help thus far.
when flashing to stock through Odin you retain the same cache and therefore you can have some issues of force closes..which is why a factory reset is always best....and mandatory when going from 4.1.1 to 4.0.4
That's a very stable ROM and I'm surprised at the issues you had. I have a feeling it wasn't the ROM or anything you did persay but bad flashes happen which it why most of us have a nandroid to fall back on just in case. Sometimes a re-flash does the trick to fix problems.

Ok well i wiped cache/data in recovery mode and all seemed ok (not sure if its worth noting, but the recovery menu/screen was totally different from last night - the one last night was touch screen with ++++ before and after each menu choice, and the one today has me using the volume keys to move and power to select).
i went to do kies restore and it went smoothly, but is now sitting on the last option, 'restoring call log', for quite a while. So i guess ill update this again when kies finishes up.
10 minutes later and its still sitting at restoring call log. should i abort this?

seems to have worked. all my contacts are there, and i can send/receive texts. only issue is, none of my apps, settings, layout, wifi, etc transferred over for some reason. so i guess im stuck manually entering in all of this data. what a ****ing hassle this was.
do any of you trusted members do this for a fee? i really liked what i saw with darthstalkers, but cannot be bothered to go through this again.

Settings, not much can be done about that. It's needed to wipe them when going to a custom ROM (same goes when updating to avoid issues).
Titanium Backup can save your Wifi, apps and apps data (requires root). Also can save your texts and call logs with it.

Sounds like you booted into stock recovery which is what you wanted.
I used to think it was a pain restoring settings all the time but after 100 or so ROM's over various devices its takes 10-15 minutes to do that and install my apps form the market (I only use maybe 20 or so and maybe are one I have apk for already.
Everyone's first time is a bit awkward and messy... gets fun after you do it enough
So its possible it was just a bad install? This isnt a very technical or tough thing to do, but becomes a serious pain int he ass when things go awry. Would love to have the darthstalkers setup, though. I just hate to do it and have it all be FUBAR'd again.

Keep in mind that flashing a custom ROM also means flashing the updates (as it can always get better and there are bugs to fix), meaning that you will have to factory reset every time (which resets your settings, cleans your apps and such). So it's something you kinda have to get used to when flashing.
That's also why I suggested Titanium Backup, it saves a lot of time when it comes to apps, wifi, call logs, texts, etc. You'll still have to go through your settings, emails and accounts though.
If you wanna go ahead and give Darthstarkers another try, re-download it and make sure you follow their full instructions.

its true. the first time around is always a little bumpy. as long as you are doing things correctly and installing the correct files, things will only go smoother with time.
this is just my preference, but once i've transcended stock (to aosp), i dont mess around with kies anymore. i know you had your things backed up via that route but ask around and you'll see, there are a lot of useful apps out there that can backup and seamlessly restore everything you want after flashing.
dont give up. everyone deserves the performance and style they want on their device. next time you're ready, let us know. between myself, hednik and a few others, we can get you the best way to do this right here in one thread versus 20 different sites/threads/opinions. cheers
I didnt think about the future and rom updates, etc. I think ill pass for now, my time for this is limited. I'd love to have something like darthstalker working, but i cannot afford to spend the time if it all goes to hell again.I do sincerely appreciate the help, and if theres some way i can say thanks other than clicking thanks for each of you (already done), please let me know.

It's basically the way to show your gratitude, you've said thanks and pressed the button, can't ask for much more :highfive: Especially from a new user.
I hope you find the time to enjoy one of those custom ROM at some point and we'll be here if you need help again. Good luck!

[Q] Safe way to take ZVD update and not break anything

Hello,
When I woke up a few moments ago I noticed that a system update icon was in my notification bar, which I assume is the new ZVD update and right now my phone is on ZVC and is stock rooted using ioroot25 and I have TWRP 2.7.0.0 AND download mode both working thanks to AutoRec and everything is working fine but it was a difficult getting to this point because I was one of the early adopters of the AutoRec method and I had to to go back to stock and re-tot my phone numerous times to get root, recovery, & download mode all 3 working on my phone without issue.
Now that the ZVD update is waiting to be downloaded on my phone I do not want to have to go through all this stuff again nor do I want to lose anything I have on my phone currently so I would like to ask what is the recommended / safest way to install this update so that I can keep root, recovery, and download mode all 3 and not lose any of my data at the same time ?
Of course, I want to also make sure that this does not mess up my phone like the white screen issue some people had when using AutoRec on the Sprint version of the G2 or other issues so what are my choices and thanks in advance for any and all replies.

You won't be able to until they fix the update. Even just root will lock the system on the update.
Only safe way right now is to tot back to stock zvc, take the update. Root with ioroot25. If you want recovery, you can use auto-rec and then flash dorimax kernel. Which has the zvd knock code in it.

I also have a similar issue as the OP. I am currently rooted, stock rom. ZVD update has downloaded and is ready to install. However, what would be the nessesary steps to take prior to updating my phone? I dont care if I have to re-root again. I rooted me device using IOroot25. How can I unroot?
Thanks!
Supersu has the option to unroot permanently. Doing a full unroot. Weather the system accepts that, I'm not sure.

From what i understand , you will need a stock ZVC recovery and boot loader to apply the update. if you have any modification done in ROM (debloat/deleting/modifying system files) then the update might not complete.
So flash stock aboot(bootloader), recovery and kernel and then only apply the update.
TOT reflash is too cumbersome process and requires lot of restoration of apps setting etc.
I have same situation and am searching for stock files from ZVC. Please if any one has these stock file please do share.
Cheers
Phuq! I wish I read these forums more frequently.
Hey all,
Okay now, let me begin this horror story by say what I think needs to be said first and foremost.
"No matter your level of knowledge, there is always something new for you to learn."
With that being said, I phuqed up!!
I had my dream setup running almost perfectly. I mean heavily modded. Stock kitkat 4.4.2. from Sprint so I didnt have to upgrade anything. I rooted via .apk file. I autorec'd TWRP recovery. I first flashed a furnace kernel that gave me 2.49GHz overclock. And added in xdabebs cam mod. And loved it. I kept reading and researching. I found more goodies to play with. I install xposed framework and some useful add-in's. I find some old apps I love, like hide softkeys, and several quick launchers like pie control, and gestures. I eventually find D's kernel and was elated! 2.8GHz, whoopee! (although I have seen someone @3GHz.)
After about a weeks worth of additions, and stupid auto-updates from google play (omfg they take up so much room) I got that dreaded icon in my notifications bar that Im out of room!!!! Stupid phuq'n non Korean model phones! (I feel that is hella racist of LG to show their people love and phuq us over with no external memory support. We should arrange a class action law suit. Thats purposely shaping the market favorably in your region, and selling obsolete hardware to the rest of the world. "shameful behavior LG")
So to remedy the space issue, I go through my most painful, and totally ridiculous ritual of removing "my" bloatware. All the launchers that I dont really NEED or use OFTEN. The apps that are convenient to have , but that convenience is never utilized. Or its rarely needed. And that helped me out about say, oh 200mb.
DAMN IT! need more room! Need room now!! Ahhhhhhhhhhh!
Okay so a few Big boys had to go. So I dumped a game or two, and the 2nd OS I forgot about on my device, Kali Linux. That gave me the much needed room. I gained about 4GB back. Cool beans, I figure before I do any new major changing of this phone I will force myself to make room for backups, ON device!
Well that didnt pan out. Instead I did one better, (I thought) I chose to back up on device, then rip it to my PC. Cool , it has the space for storing crap like that..
"ahh, life and its inevitable bullshnikeys"
BAM!! a day or so later, my PC froze, in the middle of a gnarly drift. Crap, restart, checks disk , fixes one error, bam froze again, "ah shiz, I need to back up my back ups!" checks disk, a few errors , I have seen worse. I got it up and running then, ZZZzzzzrrrrttt! NOOOoooooooh! So the PC goes down hard. No HDD found style.
So I reach for my G2 to take a much needed brake on the throne and plan somethings out. I sit down, hit the pwr button, and my phone was in TWRP! Odd I think to myself, and proceed to reboot. TWRP! look through settings, look for anything new on the sdcard (internal) nothing. So I power it down and turn it back on. TWRP! Furious!
Now Im at defcon5 using my LIVE OS, BT5r3 KDE, and decided to hear back into the XDA jungle to see what might have happened.
I got the update for ZVD it would seem. And it bit me in the ass at the worst time. I do not have the Android drivers that the phone installs to the PC installed and configured because I cant cycle into Android OS. Im seriously stuck in TWRP mode. I managed to get into download mode once after trying for 20minutes to do so. ( I need to practice that) But for no avail, I couldnt configure/install/set anything up that would have allowed me to communicate with the phone.
Im so very tired and stressed. Normally I would throw this crap away and go back to my trusty and (IMO) more stylish motorola RZRv3, but its battery is like a joke with its 3 minute, PERIOD life time. SMH
So now I come before you, alone, tired, confused, and depressed, (I do not, like reinstalling anything, ever, in anything.) I just really dont want to hit that brick wall (pardon the pun) an know I have to, ahem, configure, so many apps that I enjoy using. All because I lost my recovery.
What is it about the recovery file that makes the option for keeping your user installed apps, achievable, versus the wack (not even an option at all) choice of having to wipe everything and start over? Because (IMO) that is in no way, a recover. Thats a fumble, oh, interception. Thats dropping the ball. If you waste all the space for "backing things up" then something happens, and you still have to completely wipe the IMPORTANT stuff!! Whats the point?
I have found and installed on this VB PC running windows 7 non sp1, x86-

LG-Mobile-Driver v 3.8.1
adt-bundle-windows-x86-20140702
adbpush
LG PC Suite (that just serves no purpose other than to annoy me by not working WITH my phone)
I have downloaded the .dll for MY phone for Flashtool
I found and downloaded the 45475791e80904201311e1051ea628c3b98eef87.LS980ZVC_12-LS980ZVD_19_update from sprint
I have downloaded CloudyG3_1.2 and cm-11-20140623-nightly-ls980
What can I do to attempt to simply boot back into my android.
and if there is no option for simply restoring the functionality of the devices previous state,
what ROM/OS do you suggest I shove in this brick or what method should I use to punch the life back into my phone?
Im dyin ova eeeah!!!
Thanks in advance,

[Q] Is my Galaxy S3 possibly bricked?

Hello everyone,
I want to start by saying that this is my first post on xda, having just signed up a few minutes ago. I tried to search for any inquiries that were similar to mine, and couldn’t find any, but I may have missed them so I apologize if that’s the case, and I’m really not even sure if this is the correct area to post this in. Once again, I’m sorry if it’s not right. I also should say that I’m not very knowledgeable in the area of rooting, and flashing roms, and I’m sure that you guys know much more than me. That having been said, you’ll have to bear with me and my lack of understanding if that’s okay, as I’m pretty limited. I've encountered a problem with my GS3 (Galaxy S3) today, where it now gets stuck in a boot-loop every time I try to turn it on. Prior to that happening, I was running the stock, unrooted AT&T android version that was released in May (4.4.2 I believe?), and I had been having a lot of problems with performance and battery life. But as I had had the phone for over two years (I bought it in November 2012), I simply thought that it was slowing down and I thought it could possibly stop working, but as I said, I’m no expert. Back to earlier today, I was using the phone as I normally do (texting, light web-browsing, etc.), when I heard the notification tone indicating I had received a text. I picked up my phone, pushed the lock/power button to turn the screen on, and it said something to the effect of (I wish I had written it down, but I didn’t think to at the time) “software broken, you’ll need to factory reset your device” (that’s very much just my recollection, so I may have it completely wrong), along with a prompt to reset it. I touched that, and it just shut off. I tried to turn it back on, and it would keep shutting off after about 15-20 seconds. But I was able to get it into both recovery and download mode – just not booted up. So I thought to (probably stupidly) try to flash a rom, and I’ve tried several since that time (my phone won’t mount as a device on my laptop, thus preventing transfers, though I was able to get around this by using a micro sd card adapter and putting the card in that, then transferring the files to the card). But the first I tried – and was successful in flashing was called AOKP 4.4.4 (Kitkat) made by Task650 from 9-10-14. I’ll try to post the link to the thread that I used to research it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684. As I’ve always been on touchwiz, I found out after I flashed it that I had to download the gapps package, which I tried to do from this link https://plus.google.com/+SeanHacker/posts/AGq2b8YwjXB . I downloaded that and tried to flash it by following this guide http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...he-gapps-package-after-installing-cyanogenmod . I’m sorry if I’m not organizing this in the right manner, but I’m doing my best! So anyway, I installed it from zip within clockwork mod recovery and then cleared the cache and dalvik cache afterwards, as the person in the above link said to. Then, I tried to reboot and that’s what I got stuck in the boot-loop. I left my phone for 30-35 minutes thinking it might’ve been taking awhile because I’d just tried to install the google apps. But it never did seem to do anything. Since that time, I’ve tried installing the stock rom (which I downloaded here: http://stockroms.net/file/GalaxyS3/SGH-I747/StockROMS.net-SGH-I747_ATT_1_20120522193451.zip) through odin and the recovery mode installation, cyanogenmod 10.2.1, and synergy r484 ( http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/GalaxyS3Verizon/roms/Synergy/Synergy-S3_19Apr13_1622_r484_s.zip ), all of which have been unsuccessful. The closest I got to being complete was going through the aroma installer for synergy, before trying to install and getting the message “Something was not successful during rom install. You will likely have a non-booter if you see this. If it constantly happens press save log in aroma and report this in xda thread.” (I didn’t know how to save the log and post it here). So that’s about everything that’s happened up until this point, and I apologize if my rambling is hard to follow lol. I just didn’t know what else to do. I’m very scared that I’ve bricked my device and that it won’t work anymore. I’m out of ideas, so I would greatly appreciate any and all help and/or input! Thank you very much for your time!
* Here is the link for the multi-window guide: http://www.howtogeek.com/189345/how-to-get-multi-window-multitasking-on-any-android-phone-or-tablet/
ok , let me get the ball rolling but not real knowledgeable myself.
1) do you know your bootloader and modem version.?
2) not bricked as long as it still can get in a bootloop.
3) sometimes (if were lucky) you can do the 'pull-battery' trick., pull battery out , wait a minute or so , put back in , do the button thing to get to recovery (power, volume up and home at same time).
(i , personally , would probably do a complete wipe and try to install the CM 10.2.1 zip to at least have my phone up and running. you still wont have gapps but you can get that after your phone is back up).
hopefully (!!!) someone more knowledgeable will chyme in , cause the battery pull trick is a maybe/maybe not. sorry dont have more right now. good luck.

Since your phone was running 4.4.2, do not attempt to flash any ROMs using that attempt to downgrade your bootloader to anything prior to 4.4.2.
Try this to get your phone up and running:
download the latest CM11 for the d2lte and save it to an external SD card: https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=d2lte
dowload the latest tar.md5 version of Philz Touch for the d2lte from here: https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_...Edition/d2lte/
boot phone in download mode, open Odin 3.07, do not check anything except f.reset.time, flash Philz via PDA box, remove USB cable when you see the word Reset appear in the status window, remove battery, replace battery, boot into recovery, format system, Dalvik, data, and cache, flash cm11, and reboot.
thank you audit13 , i was really reaching. lol. to heck with mighty mouse. its "mighty-aidit13 here to save the day". :good:

Thank you both so much!
I'm sorry, but I don't know my bootloader or my kernel version, unfortunately. I've got a lot to learn, and this happening clearly proves that lol. I will try that with cm right now, and let you know how it goes! Should I download the latest nightly or the latest stable version? I'm sorry for all of the questions!
questions are o.k. its how we learn. (& keep from jacking up our phones.lol).

I appreciate your patience. I don't know if I could be so kind and forgiving if I was in your shoes right now. I just feel like a total idiot for not seeking advice before I flashed the initial rom.
The latest nightly or stable will do. You just want to get your phone up and running with a ROM.
It was successful!
I flashed cm and it worked! It is seemingly fully-functioning right now (I haven't noticed anything that isn't working), but I have two more things I'd like to ask about, if you don't mind. First, and this is the more important one to me, is getting the gapps if that's at all possible (though I'm a little hesitant about it), though I can live without them. I would post the link to the aforementioned gapps guide, but I cannot post links in replies right now as I do not yet have 10 posts, but I will try to edit the initial post. Since that’s where I ran into the problem initially, it’s may not a good idea to follow that link’s instructions. Secondly, one thing I'd like to do – seeing as this is my first non-touchwiz rom – is get multi-window installed on this rom, if I can do that. There was a link I was reading up on, though I don’t know how accurate or “safe” it is. I will edit the initial post with the link if I can. I feel bad for having all of these different problems and questions, but you guys are lifesavers. For all I knew, I’d be stuck with an expensive paperweight from this point on, so you guys really helped me so much!
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Google_Apps
here is a link for CM 11 gapps.
dont know about multi-window , my phone is very bare bones (not even gapps).
"all i can really do , is stay out of my own way and let the will of heaven be done"
Confirm the bootloader and modem on your phone using the Samsung Info App from the Play store. Once you have this information, you can look for TW-based ROMs in the development threads that are compatible with your bootloader and modem.
I haven't had an s3 for over 10 months so I can't comment on the availability of the multiwindow function in CM ROMs.
That's very much appreciated!
Thank you so much! Would you mind looking at that link that was edited into the first post to tell me if the procedure itself is correct? I just don't want to take any chances!
Okay, I will do that as soon as I get the gapps installed Thank you so much again for all of your help!

if your talking about the flashing guide for gapps , it looks correct. you flash gapps from recovery just like you did the CM11 rom.
"all i can really do , is stay out of my own way and let the will of heaven be done"
The Xposed Framework will do what you want to do. If you want to try CM12, Xposed will not work as it has not been updated to work with Android 5.0.
I recommend setting up your ROM with all of the apps and settings you like. Once you have done that, boot into recovery, create a nandroid backup, boot into the ROM, install Xposed Framework and play with it. If something goes wrong, boot back into recovery and restore your nandroid backup which will undo everything you did since you create your backup.

Okay, thank you so much, and I'm fine with staying on CM11, I think. Yes, I was talking about the gapps guide in the last post; sorry I didn't clarify it better haha. Is there a way to create the nandroid backup onto my micro sd card?
there is in twrp. dont know about cwm , but should be though.

You should be able to specify the backup location in recovery. For me, I tend to save it to an external SD card and make a copy on your computer for safekeeping.
Thank you and I'm sorry! This is just all so confusing to me, and I'd be completely lost without both of you helping me!

Need S4 Rom advice!

Hello! Pretty new in XDA forum and I have a couple of questions and concerns. I was browsing through some threads and I was wondering if I could get some opinion/help from other members.
I have a second phone that I want to mod and I need some help.
Device: Samsung Galaxy S4 (ROOTED)
Model#: SGH-M919
Android Version: 4.4.4
Baseband: M919UVUFNK2
It's an old phone and lately, it's been running really slow and if possible, I'd like to make it run as if it was brand new or at least somewhat close. So the question is, are there any recommended stable roms/mods I could use and if there are/is, will I be able to use it with my rooted phone or do I have to completely factory reset it before I apply the mods/roms?
Thank you!
Hi @Mr.LinK,
Just yesterday I finally got sick of my M919 slow/battery drain/old stuff and decided it was time for a reset. I was running SlimKat from over a year ago and while it was a great ROM, I had accumulated so much crap that it was getting really bogged down. This just happens over time no matter what OS, no fault to Slim. But I was also looking to move to Lollipop. Here's what I did:
1. Backed up using several methodologies (full backup with TWRP just in case, then from Android I backed stuff up with Helium, and used Backup My Mobile for SMS/MMS etc., an EFS backup just in case, etc..)
2. From within Android, did a factory reset. This sent the phone into recovery, and it formatted the data partition.
3. Rebooted to recovery again, and used TWRP to manually format the media section, just in case something was left there. Then wiped everything except the external SD.
4. Used ODIN to flash the OH3 firmware onto my MDL M919, without letting reboot after (unchecked the reboot checkbox). Pulled battery, rebooted back into download mode again, and flashed OH3 a second time... this gets around some instance people have reported about incomplete upgrades of firmware and all sorts of issues... better safe than sorry.
5. Let phone boot into now 100 % stock OH3 Android 4.4.4. YEEEUKKK. Some part of me thought I would just root the thing and get rid of Samsung crapware, but just the sheer annoyance of the T-Mobile boot animation was enough to remind me why I left stock long ago. Anyway, I let it boot, and set it up minimally with just 1 Google account, not restoring from backup. To my surprise it found the ATT network (I'm an ATT user, not T-Mobile... I just prefer T-Mo phones because they have unlocked bootloaders) and APN no problem no effort from me. Usually I have to enter an APN.
6. I tested the phone out to make sure all systems were working. GPS, WIFI, Bluetooth, etc.. To my surprise, first time I ran the camera app, it applied a firmware patch. Sweet. I'm glad I went through this step. Coming from ancient MDL, I figured there might be some kinks like this. I let it sit on stock for a few hours while I did stuff with my kids.
7. Back home, I did a factory reset from within Android. Then I flashed the latest TWRP tar file (2.8.7.0) using ODIN, and in TWRP did a full wipe of everything again.
8. At this point I flashed Danvdh's GPE edition of Lollipop from here.

Installation went smoothly. It's a very basic set of apps that it comes with (Google play is there, but you have to download email/messaging apps from the store such as Gmail and Messaging, Maps, etc). I like this approach!
I've been gradually setting things back up, and am very happy with things so far. Haven't run into any problems yet. The nice pure GPE android experience is refreshing.
@Frankenscript Thanks for the information. I was reading the linked thread and it looks really good so I'll give it a try

I just completely flashed my phone with the ROM and I'm pretty happy with the outcome. No bloatware feels so nice. I've been tinkering with it for a while now and I haven't encountered any problems so far but I did notice that model number changed to GT-I9505G. I'm assuming that's normal since the rom is based off of another variant which makes sense, correct me if I'm wrong. Will this complicate future updates or other rom installation? If so, are there any ways of reverting back to the original model number?

I'm pretty sure we can change the reported model number by modifying the build.prop file. I just haven't poked around with it yet... I did ask the question in the thread and am waiting for a reply. I haven't had to do this kind of thing for over a year, and I forget the build.prop key that does it. But I had some concern that it might bork something else down the road so I decided to wait a bit. IT's just a cosmetic thing and I'm SOOO enjoying the experience right now.
Two little things I'm still fishing around for answers to:
-In the drop down quick access menu, I wish there was a sound/vibrate/mute toggle. I can make one with PowerToggles but maybe there's a way to adjust what's in the native one.
-Really silly, but the power off button when pressed just seems to ... power off the phone!? No option for restart / recovery. Maybe there's an option to set this somewhere; haven't checked.
Still, these are all minor things to sort out. Really, I think I'm very sold on GPE editions now thanks to Danvdh's work.

Just an update, my phone just rebooted twice in the last 5 mins or so. Was watching on my netflix and it randomly rebooted. Any idea what's causing it and how to prevent it from happening?

Haven't seen random reboots. I think I got maybe one reboot since installing the ROM. Then again, I haven't put NF on the phone. I do know that Netflix app had some issues on my Shield tablet, and the manufacturer (Nvidia) came out with a patch... maybe it's something general in Lollipop?

Both if those can be fixed with Xposed modules.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Free mobile app
Will look into doing this in a week or so. Thanks
