Weird it's the icon that appears and points out that a headphone is connected, as boomsound (icon on the left of headphone icon) is enabled as well.
So somehow your phone or better the software get's a signal that a headset is connected, even if it isn't. Could be some problem with the 3'' socket, but as well with the ROM that you are running.
So we have to dig a little bit deeper. To have a start which FW and ROM are you using?
I had this and installed some app for manually switching it on and off... Anyway, after trying it, it started working fine, so I uninstalled the app and no problems since.
Also, check your headphone socket for crap, insert headphones and remove a few times with gravity on your side.

My roommate and I are having the same issue where our auxiliary ports. We tested 3 different cables on 2 Toyotas and a VW. It looks like there is a issue with how the ports are grounded in the Toyotas, is this a software or hardware issue? In Toyotas the phone could not recognize if it was connected to headphones, auxilary or not connect at all. It would constantly switch between the 3. And end up often choosing to play sound through the phone speakers. The VW had no issues.
Any fixes or suggestions?
Same problem here. If I put in the cable the icon shows up for a second and than disappears. When I touch the other end of the cable while it is plugged in, the icon shows up permanently

On my car (Honda Civic Eg with Jvc Radio) everything is ok, on the car of my chief with an fm transmitter the aux icon disappears within a second. On my old Moto Razr I everything worked as expected. I dont know if its a software issue or hardware issue. Maybe I give this phone back, I'm not sure, I like it but this aux issue really annoys me.

2011 Camry 2010 Corolla the icon for aux might show, the icon for headphone might show or nothing. It is random and I don't know if it is hardware or software.
Having the same issue. There is another thread about it as well. Really bums me out because I love this phone but I use music through my phone in the car quite often.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has experienced this issue as Google shows. Has anyone found a fix to the stupid headphone jack not working thing. How if you use certain devices the phone will not output audio. Like the aux in my car or at my work? BT works fine. Headphones work fine its mainly aux. Unplugging the device and replugging it a few times will eventually solve the issue. the thing I think is funny. I plug my aux in and it shows the little aux symbol on my phone in the status bar. but as soon as I start Google Music, it goes away and disables the aux cable. obviously that is a software thing. Is anyone working on it?

I run soundabout pro and never any issue with my aux out with any device I was plugged into
Soundabout only somewhat works for my headphones.. Powered headphones really confuse the crap out of this device.
Lol

Hello everyone !
My M8 went mad today. It recognizes all headphones/earphones except the stock one that came with the device. The stock one works perfectly fine with all the devices except my M8. That sounds really strange, but it did happen.
I googled some forums and found that soundabout app on the play store could solve this issue by routing the audio to headphone jack. It worked.
I was tinkering with the settings of the app. I routed the audio to the earpiece(top speaker) only.
I'm somewhat skeptical that the top speaker now has less volume compared to the bottom one, when playing music/videos.
Does this mean that I have a partly damaged speaker ?
Also, can tinkering the settings damage the hardware(speakers) in any case ?
Thank you for reading.

I think that the earpiece speaker is actually less powerful than the bottom speaker. I use SoundAbout myself as I have an issue with one of my friends old stereo's. The phone doesn't recognize that I have plugged in the aux cable but it only happens with that stereo. So I have to use the SoundAbout app to change the setting to Wired Headphones.
I'm not sure if tinkering setting can damage the speakers, but I have damaged the bottom speaker myself by flashing one of the first CM12 nightly's that came out. The speaker is quite easy to replace yourself and same goes for the earpiece.
Hello,
I have nexus 5 with stock 5.1.1 not rooted.
I started to use soundabout because my phone didn’t recognize AUX-IN from my car audio.
Everything was ok for long time till yesterday.
Now, after I will use soundabout I can’t hear any call conversation. I need to restart nexus.
I am wonder If someone know some similar program that I can test.
Regards from Poland

Get your earphones replaced. You can try by using another earphones. It worked for me as I faced the same problem you are facing currently.
Any other changes to the phone (modded, new ROM, OTA update, or anything else?); or the headphones just stopped working with no significant changes to the phone?
If the latter, there are apps that will allow you to toggle on/off headphones. But if it still doesn't work, you may have a hardware defect (headphone jack has become loose from the motherboard, for instance).
If not modded, try factory reset, or RUU (if available for your CID).
If modded, try a different ROM.
Hello
it looks like i's stuck with the earphone mode while it's unplugged, the icon still here
i noticed it when i had call, people and me cant hear each other. but if i activate free-hand speaker i can ear them (not them since i guess it waits for for the sound from earphones mic)
(rom v10.0.3.0, update to 10.0.4.0 fails)
anyone experiences that yet? and better, anyone would have a solution?
thanks in advance to readers and for ideas
try shortcutter, theres a few options/toggles for directing sound to earpiece etc.
Try to plug and unplug earphones several time if it fails to remove the headset icon try cleaning the port with tooth pick with small thin cotton rolled around the tooth pick but be gentle with that not to damage the port permanently
If all of this fails you have to ways either go to Mi customer service to replace the port
Or you just download (Soundabout app) from Google play and route your sound ports manually
Hope to get fixed
well thanks to both
i tried so many things, material ant software, nothing worked
and when i woke up today, it was gone and works now perfectly with or without hearphones
wont be a big hlp for next people in need but im glad it works now
