Is Tab S able to work with S-Pen? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am thinking of buying a new pad. My wish list contains Note 10.1 2014 and Tab S. I like S-pen because I am a Note 2 user but Tab S has AMOLED screen that offer me with amazing visual effect. So I think that if my note 2 spen could work for tab s.
Anyone know about it?

I don't believe so. But sorry I can't try it. But it's never been mentioned.

No it will not work :v i tried

nope does not work. period.

It won't work as the spen requires a wacom digitiser which the tab s does not have...

Nope doesn't work. I recently purchased a samsung c pen and that works well.

So the Samsung C Pen looks good...except for the price of $25.95 on Amazon.com. Is there a similar generic/third party (i.e. cheaper) equivalent that works just as well?

cant really say a thing since i got it free with my s3 last time... ^_^

Sorry, it will not work. There is no active digitizer in the Tab S

Look for the friendly swede on amazon they are good and you get spare tips. £9.95 was the cost

You'll never get any kind of precision using a stylus on a capacitive display. And without palm rejection you'll have to be a contortionist to do any serious inking on a large display. S Pen is electromagnetic. The display itself generates an electrical field that senses the presence of the pen up to a half inch away. Samsung's apps (EG: S Note) are pen aware. Any third party stylus on a standard capacitive display registers as a really skinny finger, not a pen. Note displays also have 1,024 degrees of pressure sensitivity while standard capacitive displays have one "ink" and "no ink." There is no way to replicate Samsung's Note features on a device with a capacitive display.
Standard Capacitive Display
Conductive (Active) Display
It's not the pen that makes a Note a "Note," it's the display itself. From Wiki...
Wacom tablets use a patented electromagnetic resonance technology. Since the tablet provides power to the pen through resonant inductive coupling, no battery or cord is required for the pointing device. As a result, there are no batteries inside the pen (or the accompanying puck), which makes them slimmer.
Under the tablet's surface is a printed circuit board with a grid of multiple send/receive coils and a magnetic reflector attached behind the grid array. In send mode, the tablet generates a close-coupled electromagnetic field (also known as a B-field) at a frequency of 531 kHz. This close-coupled field stimulates oscillation in the pen's coil/capacitor (LC) circuit when brought into range of the B-field. Any excess resonant electromagnetic energy is reflected back to the tablet. In receive mode, the energy of the resonant circuit’s oscillations in the pen is detected by the tablet's grid. This information is analyzed by the computer to determine the pen's position, by interpolation and Fourier analysis of the signal intensity. In addition, the pen communicates information such as pen tip pressure, side-switch status, tip vs. eraser orientation, and the ID number of the tool (to differentiate between different pens, mice, etc.). For example, applying more or less pressure to the tip of the pen changes the value of the pen's timing circuit capacitor. This signal change can be communicated in an analog or digital method. An analog implementation would modulate the phase angle of the resonant frequency, and a digital method is communicated to a modulator which distributes the information digitally to the tablet. The tablet forwards this and other relevant tool information in packets, up to 200 times per second, to the computer.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wacom

I had the graphic for a capacitive display. Here's the graphic for a resistive display. It changes nothing in comparison to an inductive display.

I used to own one of these, bought it for my Galaxy SIII but it did not work on my Galaxy Note II but was informed that was due to the screen resolution. Maybe it was more to do with the digitiser.
So can you confirm it works without any issues on the Tab S? (mine is the 8.4 version)

yup working fine with tab s 8.4 i also use it on 8.4 as well.

Interestingly enough, I found that a standard wooden pencil works as a stylus on our tablets
I'm sitting here at work with my tablet and just for the hell of it I tried to use the eraser of the pencil to see if it would do anything (didn't think it would) and it didn't, so I turned it around and used the tip, to my utter surprise it worked perfectly! A pencil won't damage the screen (unless you're an idiot and press really hard) because graphite is a soft material, I never thought of wood as being conductive, but apparently it's just conductive enough for it to work. Didn't work at all on my Note 3.

Brando that's a great news! Xperia Z was the first to claim that the screen woukd work with any pointed object like a key, a pencil or a plectrum. Woukd you make a short video and show us how it works? How thick is the point you have used?

Can any other members confirm whether pencil input works. You may need to adjust the screen sensitivity settings to work like in the S5.
Sorry I don't own a tab S yet, but would like to confirm this feature before buying

Recommend a stylus for the s3?

I've been using that popular cheap $5 stylus with the round rubber tip, it finally broke and the tip is loose.
I mainly use the stylus for swype text input, and general navigation, no drawing. What would be the ideal stylus for the galaxy s3? I'd like to be able to use it on the soft menu and back buttons too. I like a soft tip, not hard like the C pen (which i saw in the review does not work on the soft menu buttons).
Has anyone used the iFaraday stylus ( http://www.ifaraday.com/ )? That seems like my first choice right now, it would be nice to know if it works on the soft menu buttons.

I just bought a cheap three pack of stylus' off Amazon for ~$1 w/ free shipping. Being plastic, they're much lighter than my old aluminum Boxwave pen, but they're functionally equivalent and nice enough in quality (especially for only ONE DOLLAR )
Not worth overpaying for these things, IMO.

Yep that's the one i have. It does work great for being so cheap, slides on the screen pretty easily. You really need to tap hard on the soft buttons for it to work which was kind of a hassle. Also my tip became loose after a month.
The iFaraday has a cloth tip and requires very little pressure (according to the website). So it should slide on the screen a little better, and since it operates with light pressure, i'm guessing it should work on the soft menu buttons. It's $12 + shipping and theres a 30 day money back guarantee which isn't too bad.

From what I heard, Samsung is supposed to be releasing a variant of the S-Pen for the GSIII like the one on the note? I could be wrong but I remember hearing this in a Tech conference video a little while back.

That'd be impossible, since the S3 doesn't have a Wacom digitizer built into the display like the Galaxy Note's do. Maybe the S4 will have it.

Yes I know it doesnt have the digitizer but they said they will be releasing a variant that uses the capacitive Technology. I don't know if it was just a marketing fluke. But I will try to find the video when I get home.

Apparently the C-pen only works on the SIII so I assume there is something special about it that makes it better for the SIII.

The C pen works partially on other devices with highly sensitivity screens like the galaxy s3. It works on the note if you press hard. Which shows theres no special screen technology unlike the note and its stylus.

Keyboard Discussion

Creating this thread as a general discussion area for keyboards on the galaxy note 10.1.
I'll start:
I am looking for a keyboard case that not only is able to lay flat while my tablet is propped up, but also is able to lay flat while my tablet is laying flat as well. This setup would give me the ability to type up documents or post on forums for example, when that is the sole task at hand, with the tablet propped up much like a laptop. On the flip side, it would allow me to take great notes in the classroom setting while both apparatus are flat (I am not keen on making quick sketchs while my tablet is positioned in front of me like an easel).
Is anyone aware of a case/keyboard combo or separate keyboard and case that is capable of this versatility which will work well for the note 10.1?
This one looks to be exactly what I need. However, I've yet to find any indication that this will also fit the Note.
http://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Keyboard-Folding-Leather-Samsung%C2%AE/dp/B005O74J7O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1346533541&sr=8-2&keywords=note+10.1+keyboard
Anything that fits the Tab 10.1 will be WAY too small for the Note unless it's a highly flexible "universal fit" case (e.g. stretches to fit).
I have a ZAGGFolio for the original 10.1 - it's way too small for the Note.

Not released yet but you can order it now
I've been using the Kensington K39383US Universal KeyFolio Pro Case with Removable Keyboard but the only issue with it is that it comes with 2 sets of corners, one big (for big tabs) and one small for smaller tab (like the Note 10.1) But the smaller corner holder does not hat a opneing for the S-Pen, so I had to resort to doing surgery on it and it fits fine, works well and I'm able to take out the S-Pen.
I like it since the keyboard can be detached and in doing so, the Tablet can be position in numerous viewing positions.
There is another one model K39519US that looks like it already has an opening in the corner holder, but I still think it needs to be surgically worked on. lol

I don't have a keyboard / case combo, but I came from the iPad and I have the apple wireless keyboard and It works better than expected. The play, pause, volume buttons all work. There is even a button for apple's mission control on its Mac's and it actually works to bring up the task manager on to note which I thought was pretty cool. No need for me to spend another $50-$70 on a keyboard. I know it's not what the OP reauested but the thread title drew my attention here so I came to read and I wanted to give my feedback on my experience with the apple Bluetooth keyboard.
I edited the post to include a link to the keyboard. You can find it on amazon and best buy as well. I bought mines at best buy.

By the way, if anyone is interested to know, the Logitech MX5500 also works brilliantly with the Note. No problems with 2 Blue tooth devices (keyboard and mouse) connected simultaneously.

How's the included keyboard with these cases? I'm pretty critical when it comes to keyboards and would go for a better keyboard while giving up the convenience. Currently happy with Logitech Android bluetooth keyboard with only the minor quirks of browser key not launching browser (can be fixed by renaming chrome apk to browser.apk and having to disable auto capatilization otherwise first auto-capitalized letter will appear twice so you end up with "AA". May just get a small sling with two compartments and a $9 compact Amazon (Arkon) travel stand.

You guys convinced me to get the Kensington keyboard! It looks great and having a keyboard all the time is a huge plus for me.
One question: does the stylus fit in the stylus holder of the Kensington case?
These are nice and all but isn't it a pain to take the tablet out when you want to use it as a tablet? I mean I already have a laptop and I can thumb type on this thing hella fast.

The note pro 12.2 keyboard. Best keyboard i have ever used on a smart device. Perfectly laid out. But it will only work on a rooted 10.1
Do you mean the pro 12.2 keyboard from samsung works on the 10.1 2014? I once thought of the Logitech PRO 12.2 keyboard for the 10.1 2014 but from the photo, obviously when we use this keyboard, we need to insert the device which does not fit.
I am using Samsung Bluetooth Keyboard that is for the Note 12.2 Pro. It is compatible with the Note 10.1 (p-601).
It is very nice and light weight.
I have used a keyboard (Rapoo) but it is broken after 3 months without any cause.. It was a very bad one and it worth nothing.
Could you please post the link on this product to avoid confusion? Thanks.

Not sure why people are calling the Samsung-branded Bluetooth Keyboard the one for the Tab/Note PRO 12.2. It doesn't have that compatibility restriction on the site. Also, what BT keyboard would require a root?
If people are talking about the Logitech-brand Keyboard for the Tab/Note PRO 12.2, that's a different story.

I got it today and after a little tweak it works great. All you need to do is to detach the lower clip from the case carefully, shorten it a bit and then glue it back. The tablet sits securely in the case, it is not a perfect fit, you cant take the s-pen out as the upper clip covers it, the camera works well, the only flaw is that the flash is covered. All the other features work well, all the magnet clips work, you can securely close the case, the keyboard itself works flawlessly as well, in fact I am writing using it.
For what it's worth, I've been really happy with the Windows 8 Logitech Tablet Keyboard (search B009JPBPWO on Amazon and it will pop up). I bought the Windows 8 version because it was cheaper than the android or apple versions at the time.

Also, I did try the Microsoft Wedge Keyboard, and the keys were uncomfortably tight. The key faces are full size as advertised, but the pitch (spacing between the keys) is really cramped. I returned it after a couple of days.
I don't consider myself to have overly large hands, I'm a man with with what I would call medium or average sized hands. Perhaps this keyboard might be more comfortable to someone with thinner, daintier fingers.

S-Pen Replacement?

Will the Wacum Bamboo Feel work with the S3? My Note 10.1 is getting a bit old and looking to get replaced, but I want to be able to use a decent S-Pen alternative.

These are awesome, I have a few I use with my chromebook plus.. Might be thinking about picking up a tab s3 as well. ?
I'm currently using the Staedtler Noris Digital Pen and it's a pretty good replacement for the too-small S-Pen that was shipped with the S3.
Replacement tip
I really have to make a comment here. I was looking for replacement tips when I first bought my tablet so I could work out how roughly I could use my stylus. I bought these tips from eBay and found they are far better than the originals. Both in endurance and use. I bought these as Samsung had none available at the time.

If in UK check on

They have a couple in stock etc
I just bought the Wacom Bamboo stylus Feel and it does work with the S3, but it is slightly off by a millimeter or so (even after changing several replacement nibs). It seems to work best with the stylus in a near vertical position, but it is really hard to write that way . Oh, the Wacom also cannot activate the soft buttons outside the screen the way the original stylus can.
It's not too bad for writing in general, but I won't recommend it for precision drawing. I seem to get the best results with Onenote rather than other writing apps.
The original S3 stylus is still the most accurate. Maybe I got a stylus that is slightly defective or the new S3 digitizer reacts differently to old versions of the stylus (different levels of sensitivity and all that).

I had the same issue with my original nib. My new one is out by same amount and have been wondering if there was a way to realign it.

After doing more research, I applied the fixes recommended in this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2662203
I had to do both the stylus calibration (pop off the button cover and turn the knobs for calibration and sensitivity) as well as the shaving off the tip of the pen trick. The calibration gets the stylus to point to the same spot on the screen (but at 90 degree angle, use the *#0*# hardware tests for S-Pen to be more accurate). The sensitivity fix helps the stylus activate the off-screen soft buttons (Yay!). Finally the shaving off the tip minimizes the off-set when using the stylus at an angle. I finally got the stylus to be near perfect (it's still like 0.5 mm off, but that's good enough for me).
Hopefully this would work for you too!

That s pen is a proper pen size. Noris is also for tab S3 and galaxy book. Thats more of a pencil standard. Idiota
The Staedler Norris Digital works fine. No erase button though.

Let's talk about the S Pen on the Tab S4

What is going on with it? I bought the Tab S3 last week and the Tab S4 this week, was going to return the S3 and keep the S4, but I like the S3 a lot and it really is great for reading textbooks and PDFs on, where if you try that on the S4 it would actually be smaller due to how much would have to be cut off to display the PDF. Anyways, back on topic, the new version of the SPen. To me it's worse in every way imaginable from last years.
Pros:
-fatter
Cons:
Everything else:
-The tip is rounder
-The materials feel cheaper
-The button is harder to find on it
-It looks a lot cheaper.
Luckily it functions the same, but I don't know why they went this route. Like their type cover this year, it just gives off a rushed vibe. Thankfully they're both EMR and as such can be used interchangeably. Though I wished both would include an eraser option. I have a really old Samsung alternative SPen for the Note Pro that does have the eraser on it and it still works as it should with all the apps that support it.
Personally I love this stylus. While I haven't used a S3 stylus for much (just testing in stores) I really do like this one.
Pros
- Roundness to it gives it a better feel to a real pen.
- Still EMR
- Light Weight (im sure the other ones are similar)
Cons
- Yes button is a little hard to find. Would of been nicer a little closer to the tip I'd think
- It looks cheap and a little rough around the mid section silver band
which one looks worse/cheaper: the white or black s-pen?
Must it be charged, and if so how? If not how does it work?

No charging required.
It's tech is the same to that of the past notes and the S3.

To be honest, I'll be a lot happier if Samsung provides the Bluetooth S-Pen here as well, and they'll charge when you attach it to the tablet side (placement like surface pens)...
Well, I can dream, right?
Dreaming aside, if I remember correctly, the first time that we were able to grab Bluetooth S-pen capability is by checking Tab S4 system dump?
So, does that mean that somehow, we can get Bluetooth S-pen capability in the future on this device?

If I remember the samsung press event, supposedly that bluetooth feature should work with ANY android device, not just Samsung. I think it was at the tail end of the S Pen features section. So, yes it should work, but the charging would be the only hurdle. Which you could be on to something. A lot of people would use this tablet in portrait mode and if it only requires 30seconds to charge the supercapacitor, then using the magnets near the pogo pin pads should do the trick.
If you want a clip on the pen, take a look at the Space Pen clip on Amazon. Fits perfectly.
I lost my pen New ones are £50. I feel this is a bit of a ripoff but may be down to no stock anywhere! Anyway does anyone know if the Notes s9 s pen works on the Tab S4. Can't find any details anywhere. Cheers

I am using my old Note 4 pen and seems all functions work fine, so would guess the Note 9 will also work
The Note 5 S pen works as well.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B072N31S7C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 have gone as low as $27 here in the US. Maybe you can find something locally but it is a good substitute for the S Pen until you can afford a new one.
I'm using my spare spen from my Note 7 in a 3D printed "case", no problems with it so far

That is correct the S-Pen is powered by the electromagnetic grid beneath the display. However the SGTS4's S-Pen doesn't have bluetooth features like the Note 9.
The best I use so far, better than the iPad one
