I'm looking for current information on booting a temporary, rooted TouchWiz ROM from the external SD card that won't overwrite the current installed ROM; to be used for updating PRL, GPS, etc...
It would be great if there is a solution using my current recovery, but only a wish. I really miss having this utility from previous phones. Nandroiding to flashing and back is tedious.
The devil kernel has a function like this, dual boot, but it works for some and for some others it doesn't, works with aosp roms 4.4.* and TouchWiz 4.3 check it in the original development thread

Devil works best with aosp 4.3 and up. If you want a tw 4.3 it will work. You need to use devil kernel for both roms and use the devil recovery I modifed for our device. In the devil recovery you must enable selinux under backup restore.. advanced (I think) so your nands will work. All backups are done in cwm format only. If you need more info or help with devil just ask.

*I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE TO ANY DAMAGE YOU MAY CAUSE TO YOUR DEVICE BY FOLLOWING THESE STEPS*
*This was tested on FC07/FC14, I would not try this on CM9*
Ok so I know a lot of you like me have an issue when using the Rogue ICS Kernels that you can't run applications that need the SD Card such as NBA Mobile from Sprint, XDA Premium, and the list goes on. This only happens for certain applications. You can run them just fine on stock kernels but you won't have recovery.
I found a way around this!
Requirements:
1) Rogue Kernel (Odin)
2) Mobile Odin
The way this works is you must flash a rom with the stock kernel, for instance the FC14 Stock Rom will have the stock kernel in it. Flash the stock rom and then let it boot up. Now you will want to have the Odin file of the latest Rogue ICS Kernel (FC07) on your SD Card or Internal Storage. Run Mobile Odin and choose Kernel, find your file, and then flash it.
Not only does this flash the FC07 kernel for you and allow you to have recovery again, you will be able to use those applications that need the SD Card and you will also get rid of that Yellow Triangle. This method will not work if you are already running the Rogue custom kernel, you need to go back to a stock kernel.
If you are not on a stock rom with a stock kernel I would recommend that you replace the zimage in the rom zip file with the stock zimage from the stock rom. Once you flash the rom you can then Mobile Odin the FC07 Rogue Kernel.
I hope this makes sense and I hope this helps anyone who has needed a way around this.
Thanks,
SSCONCEPTZ
Normal Odin may have the same result but I have not tested that.

Hayy, ss I'm having an issue with my ext. sd card maybe you can help me out. i'm on Calk's stock rooted FC07 with the FC07 modem. I cant transfer anything to the ext. sd card. Tryied different card with same results. Formated new card still NG. Help....

Before when I couldn't install apps such as XDA Premium or NBA Mobile on these kernels I would have the same issue. Now that I worked around it I just tried and it lets me move apps to my SD card.
So I'm kinda new to Samsung community. Just came over from the shift. Basically I installed ROM manager and now I have 2 recoveries. If I turn the phone off then hold volume up and power I get this rogue recovery. If I reboot in to recovery from room manager I have the standard clock work mod recovery. Is this normal? Thanks ahead of time for any answers!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Only portions of ROM manager work on this phone. Recovery is only "fake-flashed" so it isn't permanent.
I would actually suggest you don't use it on this phone due to issues people have had, but it is up to you.
The kernel included with whatever ROM you're running was repacked with Rogue recovery. Rogue is a modified version of CWM. It has all the same tools, but has modified the menus and made other changes. In a nutshell, Rogue is basically CWM, as it's built from the same source.
As sfhub said, it's probably best to avoid ROM Manager on this phone. It's unnecessary and it has the potential to cause problems.
Regarding the kernel, Samsung phones don't use a recovery partition, but rather some kind of RAMDISK on the kernel partition (or something along those lines). As a result, recovery is packed into the intramfs in the kernel. So whenever you flash a kernel, you will also be flashing whatever recovery is included with it. Keep this in mind in your future flashing.
makes perfect sense! Thanks! One more thing...since clock work is temporary can I just uninstall ROM manager and that recovery will go away? I'm using blazer ROM 4.1 if it matters

Yes. I would uninstall it anyway. It doesn't work well for this phone

First a little background. I am not new to the android world whatsoever. I don't post much but have been lurking for years. I had a Verizon GS3 and just recently switched to T-Mobile a few days ago and obviously bought a T-Mobile GS3. My vzw phone had no problems. But for some reason my T-Mobile phone will not boot any kernel I try to flash. Roms flash fine but when I flash a kernel everything goes fine in recovery but my phone won't boot past the splash and I end up having to restore a backup. I know I'm flashing the right kernels. I am on touchwiz based ROMs and haven't tried any aosp Rom because for the first time ever I actually prefer an OEM skin to aosp. So basically am I missing something obvious. Anyone else having thus problem. On Verizon I had to root and unlock the bootlosder. From what I understand tmobiles bootliader was not locked down and all I had to do was root. Like I said. I've tried every touch wiz Rom and every touch wiz kernel with each Rom and none will boot past the splash screen. I always wipe dalvik and cache but even tried wiping data every time too and keep getting the same result. Any input would be appreciated. . Thanks in advance.

Shouldn't need to do any wiping of any kind. I only use AOSP/AOKP, though. May I ask why you even bother with custom kernels? They honestly seem like a waste of time to me.
Im just flash happy. Like to try them out. I've been on Verizon for many Years and am used to the developers over there. I'm still getting used to the devs over here. Don't know any of there work. I'm sure its all good though. Been using imoseyons lean kernel since the thunderbolt back in the day and have stuck with them. Just my personal preference. I'd like to try some of tmobolrs kernel devs work but like I said I can't get a single one to boot.

What kernels have you tried to flash? There are a couple that have ICS builds. Also, what version of CWM are you using?
I've tried all the tw kernels. Every single one with 2 different ICS tw ROMs. I'm not using the leaked jb tw. I'm stickung with the more stable ICS ROMs for now. I just don't understand. I've tried every one. I've been flashing a long time and don't get it. Im kinda new to Samsung though. First Samsung was the galaxy nexus. Didn't ever use Odin with it. Does anyone flash kernels with Odin. Maybe I should try that. And to answer your question I've tried twrp and the latest version of cwm from rom manager. And of course I'm using the ICS TW version of the kernels im trying.

It could just be your phone doesn't like them. There is another guy on CM10 and AOKP that can't get custom kernels to boot either.

The kernel source code was never released for any build from UVALH2 and beyond. So most of our kernels will only work with UVALEM and UVALG1 builds.
We got kind of lucky I think and ktoonsez att kernel was brought over and works. I think there's one or two others that work now too.
As far as described here go I think we've got some of the best! For an outstanding rom you should try FreeGS3. It works with most of the kernels and is an awesome stable rom. If you want a later build try wildcards XquiziT v70 based on UVALH2. Use ktoonsez kernel with it.
And just to note, the stock kernel is surprisingly good. So give it a fair shot as well. Though I can definitely see some potential advantages of custom ones as well.

Have you done full Wiping?
Wipe Data/Factory Settings
Wipe cache and dalvik
Flash Rom
Fix Permission
Reboot and don't touch it for 10 minutes
Reboot.
Wipe cache and dalvik
Flash Kernel (Must be compatible with ROM)
Fix Permission
Reboot and don't touch it for 10 minutes
Reboot.
See if this will work. Sometimes you have to let it breathe so it can adjust itself.
Have you tried uding odin to flash MrRobinsons root66 UVALH2? This will take you to fresh full stock plus root. Then try roms again.

Whatever you do................
Be sure to double check before you flash that kernel. Had my first SGS3 for 12 days before hard brick set in. Terrible disease it is.......! I had to adopt a replacement shortly after to cope with the pain of the loss. Back on my feet again now though and soarin' higher than giraffe vagina on the things I learned in my days off for mourning. I can tell ya I've personally flashed the lean kernel and kt-747 with no issues. My problems were with siya mainly.
Guys, I have a serious problem.
It's similar to the one of the thread-opener.
The diference is that I cant get ANY ROM to boot, WITH the stock kernel.
And i do like the guide says: wipe/factory reset, wipe chache, wipe dalvik cache and then flash the ROM.
Everything works fine til the ROM finished flasing and runs a reboot.
My S3 shuts down screen, then turns screen on with the "Samsung Galaxy SIII-GT-I9300" and then thats it!
All i can do is to go in download mode or recovery mode. I can also flash CWM and so on, but after flashing ROMs it won't boot!
Is it possible that i broke the device by formating internal sd-card with the stock recovery tool?
Did it, after I tried to install Wickedv6 ROM and after both times when it rebooted it just reinstalled stock ROM. So i thought, ok delete the internal sd-card, so no stock ROM on it any more.
Also tried this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1875923
Same problem.
Also tried to fix the problem by rooting and then flashing ROM. No help.
Please help guys!
Best regards

It worked out!
What is the right forum for my GT-I9300 to post then?
And why isn't any other ROM working?
The forum you got that stock rom from is the international one. This is the US Tmobile T999 forum. The two phones are NOT compatible.
Only flash, well...anything, from that forum. Our roms will brick yours and vice versa.

First, Merry Christmas!
So here is my situation. I planned to give my sister my old Samsung Epic for Christmas. I put CM10 on it, threw in a new battery and watched her unwrap it. She was happy. Unfortunately, I discovered that you cannot activate a CM10 modded phone on Sprint, so I need to flash a stock ROM. I have never done this before, and it's been a while since I messed with Android and since she leaves the state in a few days, I need to do this quickly. I hope you can bear with my possibly silly questions so I can get this done ASAP!
1) I have seen the ROM listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12755712 recommended. I plan to use this. Any issues?
2) I understand this will revert the file system back to RFS. Will I be able to restore my CM10 nandroid, or will I need to re-run the CM10 flash from scratch in order to reformat?
3) Are any of my assumptions incorrect?
Normally I would research the hell out of this rather than ask for help, but under the circumstances, I am in a bit of bind time-wise.
Thanks!
1. EC05 too old. Get FC09 tar here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592994
2. Yes, you have to flash CM10 to convert to MTD in order to restore nandroids of the format. Don't forget to wipe /system if you ever wanna flash a CM10 package, or you'll have to pull the battery...
3. IDK, I'm in China and have no knowledge of carriers
Sent from HTC Incredible S @ Sense 4.1
Just flash a stock based mtd ROM like the peoples ROM mtd. Activate and then flash back or restore back to cyanogen. I've heard that some people have issues flashing back to another ROM from cm10 because of the partition resizing. But I've jumped back to cm9 which should have been an issue, but was not. Give it a try after a backup. Worst case you have to Odin back to stock like originally planned.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
As suggested you can just flash a Touchwiz MTD ROM like The People's ROM. Activate then restore your CM10 nandroid or wipe data in CWM and flash back to CM10 after.

Or just stay on TPR and enjoy the succulent battery life
I've done the multi boot method where you boot off the sd card. It works great and is a lot faster than I thought it would be. You keep your cm10 system exactly as it is. You also can leave the OS files on your sd card and install the zip from recovery any time you need to update the prl or adjust radio settings.

ok guys im very frustrated. this is my 3rd s4 and i just want to know what im doing wrong, im on a tmobile phone. so when i get my s4 i immediately root it via twrp method, then i go and find i good stock rom to flash, my favorite is wicked rom, i get the rom, putt it on the external sd card, flash the rom and flash ktoonsez kernel, it reboots and the rom works fine no problems, until i try and reboot, then it just hangs on the samsung galaxy s4 boot screen, and it then starts to bootloop without ever going back on, ive tried flashing multiple stock roms and even leaving the kernel stock and tried different kernels without any luck, i can odin back to stock and it works fine, also i can flash any aosp rom and i dont have any reboot issues, this has happened with every phone, im at a loss and i have no idea what im doing wrong, clearly something, i need help. please help guys

Model SGH-M919, I've tried twrp 2.5 and 2.6, mostly use 2.5 because I have issues with 2.6 and yes I've checked them multiple times, re-download them both multiple times as well
Use cwm, both versions of twrp are bugged or something is wrong with it. Cwm will do the trick for you

I encountered the same problem, go to KTweaker if you are still using ktoonsez kernel. And change your settings to this.
Make sure you set it to on Boot as Immediately & save the settings. Same thing happened to me, I put in his settings and problem vanished.
After you do that, turn it off and go to recovery. Wipe Dalvik Cache & Cache than finally Fix Permissions in Advanced.

+1 you're having an issue with the kernel you're using.
Are you using exFAT 64gb sd card? If you are, take it out and your phone will boot fine.

Ok. Because you formatted the internal storage with TWRP your partitions are probably messed up. Odin back to stock (like you need to return it) and start over again. You can use TWRP if you want, its a great recovery. Just dont format the internal storage with it. Obviously try the easier fixes first, ie SD card. These phones seem to be more sensitive to formatting than previous galaxy models.

Ive been thru this issue also Trust me Restore stock once more and use oudhs cwm base recovery with swipe gestures. .. skip the twrp junk.
You need to root in a specific manor to bypass the Selinux permissive setting that samsung put on the s4.
I root with odin and flash these files in order after u google search them there also in the s4 root section ..I forget which page.
