[Q] Reading ebooks on tab s 8.4? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since this device uses samoled screen I was wondering what the ebook reading experience was like? I imagine reading with black background and white text would be easy on the eyes and especially on the battery.. Also this high resolution screen must be awesome for text reading?
I'd rather have a tablet instead of ebook reader cause of the multimedia capabilities..
tnx for the input

Black background with white text is great but makes my eyes funny because you see shadows of the text in your eyes after you stop looking at the screen. Lol. I prefer sepia themes. It is great as an ebook reader though.

Agreed that it works very well as an ebook reader. Screen is great and very clear. Use dark theme to read at night with no issues. Do yourself a favor and get the app twilight for night reading:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.urbandroid.lux
Much easier on the eyes, and I never notice the shadows of text with it

3-D Texting!

Hi everyone, forgive if anything like this is already up (I searched and found nothing). But I completely customized the text messaging appearance so that it takes advantage of the pure black that the AMOLED uses.
(This is all using the app: "Handcent SMS")
I downloaded "handcent SMS" went into settings --->custom style--->bubble settings:
Here is where I Changed Conversation style to: Android
Background color: pure black (all colors to zero)
Incoming background and outgoing background to: pure black
(By then everything should be black)
Now this is what makes the effect happen:
I adjusted incoming font color to pure red (255)
Then I put outgoing font color to 138-Green and 255-Blue
I adjusted both fonts to size 22.
I Also noticed that the date font color also helps with the effect and I have mine at 83-green.
So once you have all these setting in place, the pure black and the incoming red font should look like it pops right out at you, while the blue outgoing font color sits in the back!!!
I noticed the effect pops out more outside or whenever theres a more light in the room!
(First write up, forgive if I'm not as thorough as I should be)
Give it a shot, mess around with the colors!
Interesting effect. I do like the glossy black background. Though I found the pure red to be too harsh. I settled on official Android Blue (51, 181, 229) for the incoming text font color.
Will try it out for a few days to see whether it's a keeper.
Update: Making the incoming text font a couple of points larger than the outgoing enhances the 3D effect.

I've noticed 3D looking text in other apps like tibu but I've never though of using it for texting, its pretty cool
can you take a screenshot of it?
Crazy! It actually does give a semi 3D effect

Eh, the red text certainly pops out but I wouldn't say it does so in a 3d kind of way. In fact it looks sort of pixelated to me and harsh to look at. More like it's grabbing my attention by being so stark compared to the rest of the screen.
I think I like your color settings for the outgoing text though, very easy on the eyes. I'm messing around with options for the other color, so far I'm working with max green, mid blue and red.
Still waiting for a screenie

Blue and red colors always appear to have depth on a solid color hence the red and blue 3D glasses. It's an optical illusion but neat if you like that sort of stuff.

Wow pretty cool!!!!!
Ok so clearly a troll post. Looking at the instructions alone you can tell nothing 3D about it. I'll post a screenshot in 10 mins. Maybe we can get an op to get rid of it.
Screen shot attached

It actually gives you an optical illusion of a 3D effect.
And it works, I tried it on my phone.
Nice find OP.

I just updated a screenshot of it. Look at my results. I followed the instructions in the OP. If you think it's any different then provide a screenshot as proof.
You can see same illusion/effect in Titanium backup's app list

Ever thought that this effect won't come out in a screenshot because it's an effect of the AMOLED screen or the specifical display?
Ever thought that this is an optical illusion and not an actual 3D-effect and you might just not see it because it is, in fact, an illusion?

Display getting darker when scrolling

Hello!
I recently got the Arc S and I love it, but there's something about the screen that freaks me out. It's hard to describe, but let me try.
When I scroll through menus, objects get darker while they move. Most notibly when there's white text on black background. I don't know many of you know it, but it's like applying the "inner shadow" filter to the fonts in photoshop.
I made a video to demonstrate that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVRTmsr6Ppg
Hopefully you can see the effect on the text, but it's very noticable that the lines between the items disappear while scrolling.
While on a grey background, text appears yellowish while scrolling.
I get a similar effect when I scroll through pictures.
Other than that, the screen is perfectly fine. I have a Neo V here with the same rom and kernel and there is nothing like that.
Or is this just normal screen behaviour I have to get used to?
What rom are you on?
Sent from my LT15i using birds.
if you look clearly at the screen, it is not getting darker! just the lines between the selectable touch fields are getting darker. dont know why but this problem is on all roms i have tested. it happens at small text and very small lines (1-2 pixel lines i think)
@TheHaso
Super Jelly Bean, Slim Bean, Ultimate HD.. It doesn't seem to matter.
@om22
So you think this is a software issue?
I noticed when I scroll through small turqoise text, it clearly gets darker and shifts into a more blue-ish tone.

no i think this is normal on tn-panel lcd screens (our arc/s). just a dark blurring effect i think.
If you want to get some information about TN displays vs IPS etc just follow the link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_crystal_display#Twisted_nematic_.28TN.29
it's normal. only the lines get darker and not the text. this is how android makes it. try to increase the brightness and you will see that the lines gets a little darker.
But this effect does not happen at all on the Neo V.
And of course the text is getting darker, too. As I said, on black background a turquoise text shifts to blue while scrolling.

maybe because the neo v has built in another display? Our display also is very blurry in my opinion (high response time)

Black background is anoying!

I really dont understand why samsung uses black backgrounds with grey text as their default and only theme.
I dont know if anyone has mentioned it. but its rediculously terrible to read text on the note when you are outside this way.
Email is by far the worst. even with all battery and background savings off and brightness set to max its almost impossible to see the dark grey email list on a black background when you are outside. New emails dont have a color but are white... so its also impossbile to see if you have new emails when you are outside.
How in the hell could samsung came up with this theme. the blue and black first of all is very ugly and its far from user friendly.
Before my note 2 i had an One X from HTC. i changed to the note because of the very good battery usage time. The One X has white backgrounds for all menus, email and sms. wich makes it perfectly readable even outside. also new emails have a blue color while readed emails are black.
I dont understand why samsung has choosen this stupid color themes for their flagships.
And yes you can invert the colors. but its insane how the rest will look if you enable the inverted colors. Its just stupid!

Black colors use less battery.
It's ironic that you switched to Samsung because of the good battery time.
You really think thats ironic?
I think its ironic that HTC has removed the "screen on time" from the battery management tool as from update 4.1. because that way people cant see that their one X has a use time of less then 3 hours.
Also the Phone can heat up to about 60 degrees celcius when playing a game, in wich the screen gets so hot it starts to burn on your finger tips. battery drains from 100 to 0 in less then 30 minutes.
Well this irony is the reason i switched to the note 2. Now i get 8+ hours of use time or around 4 to 6 hours with a total of 24 hours standby.
How ironic you think it is... its allot better!
Black maybe less power consuming but the few minutes you use the email app is nothing compared to the hours you spend browsing the web with a white background. And yet i still can browse the internet for 6 hours on a charge.
So as smart as you think you are, i dont think this white background while reading a few emails will deplete your battery hours faster. But still its terrible anoying that email and sms is just unreadble outside. They should atleast add a function so people can choose for themselves wich background they prefer.
Its really not that strange i think!
Hi
In the web browser you can get black background with white text and then get incredible battery life even if you briwse a lot.
Go accessibilty option and activate the "reversed mode"
Enjoy.

The problem isn't with black screen, but the incredibly stupid grey color fonts though. If you're rooted, obviously flash away some good roms that settles it for you. Annoying but nothing you can't get rid of.
Have you tried negative screen mode when you're out?
You could try K-9 Mail to get rid of the grey font in the Samsung Mail app.
@sygys
I didn't want to provoke you. Cool down.

[Q] Background color for Google Play Books with T700

I use my Android tablets for reading, using Google Play Books. I prefer a bright white background. With my Nexus 7 (2013) it's a pure white background, just the way I like it. With the Tab S 8.4 I can't seem to achieve bright white. It's more like a light sepia. I know sepia is a choice but that's a very dark (to my eyes) background. I've also played around with the Screen Mode but none of the choices seem to change the GPB background at all. I've turned Reading Mode on and off but I don't see any difference.
I know there are other reading apps but I like having a large library stored in the Google cloud and the ability to switch devices and have the bookmark change with it.
Any suggestions on how to change the background color for just Google Play Books?
I'm having the same problem with my Galaxy Tab 4 7.0". I've tried everything you have and it also doesn't work. I've also noticed that when I click the home button on my device it turns bright white just before closing so I know that the app and device are capable of displaying the correct color.
I know this isn't an answer to your question, just letting you know that you're not the only one. In fact your post is the first I've seen about this issue and I've been Google searching different variations of the question.
Those are my settings, and whites are white as should be.

I seem to get better whites with Basic rather than Cinema. When I use Cinema white has a strong blueish tint, especially on video. Whites on Basic are fine while watching movies, YouTube, etc. Google Play Books is now better with Basic and Reading Mode off but it's still not as bright a white as I would like.
For example, I was watching Ex Machina. An early scene has a helicopter flying over a glacier. With Cinema it looked like a sea of blue. I changed to Basic and the snow and ice turned white. You lose the oversaturated colors with Basic but the blueish whites really bother me on the other settings.

Watch can't replicate greys

Hi all,
So I've had my Smart Watch 3 for a while now and overall it's great. There's just one thing that's doing my head in... Any screen that uses grey as a background displays in brown... It's not nice at all. True blacks are fine, but any shade of grey is looking awful...
Here's a screenshot from the device and a photo of the same screen:
I can't post external images so now I can't show my problem... Is there another way of showing my problem?
Well, to show the problem, you could link to an image on Google docs or something. As for fixing it, that is a tall order.
It's a tradeoff of the Trans reflective screen. I'll take being able to see the screen without Backlight.
Indeed.
