Recently put Jelly Bean on my Kindle - JB flashed, using TWRP, fine and runs great. Gapps will NOT flash, no matter which I use; it fails using TWRP each time, even after clearing cache and even redoing the whole install process.
I figured I would just sideload the Google Play store and any others I needed, but Google Play will not open once installed; it pops open for a split second then closes. I read that installing Talk and signing in would fix this, but after sideloading Talk it does the same thing.
So it seems no Google apps will sideload properly and I also am unable to flash any gapps.zip's.
Any idea? Did I miss something obvious?
Depends...are you using the CM10 gapps?
Also, what version of TWRP are you using?
Yes, CM10 (tried others too) and TWRP 2.

2.0? 2.1? 2.2?
Also, are you checking the md5s? It's a longshot but worth looking into.
Which version of gapps are you using?
TWRP 2.2 is what I'm using.
Not sure the gapps versions, but ive tried about 5 different ones. All from July and August.
What would I be checking in the md5's exactly?

Make sure it's this version.

TWRP 2.2 is still quite new and it is yet unknown of all the bugs that may come with it. Have you tried an earlier version?
Did you find a solution to your problem yet?

Hi sleep_debt, I was wondering if you have found a solution to this problem yet. I am also having a problem getting access to Google Play. I've tried loading multiple versions of GoogleServicesFramework.apk and Vending.apk, etc. I am able to get them to install, but when I open the "Market" icon it prompts me to create an account and sign in, but it is never able to make the connection. I am also confused by references to the "Google Play" store. I don't have anything called "Google Play" I only have an icon called "Market". So, I think I'm missing something, but I don't know what.

Which ROM did you use? The two ROMs I have tried both had an accompanying gapps zip file. I'm using TWP installed by KFU 0.9.6. I installed cm-10 from sgt7-linaro and jdaycane 1.7.2. I flashed the gapps ROM at the same time using TWRP and had no issues.

Not sure what this issue is, still - have tried every gapps & TWRP version I could find, but TWRP also throws an error when trying to flash gapps.
Also, sideloading the gapps just doesnt work, either, making me think the actual OS flash might be damaged? Been busy lately but plan on just flashing another OS and seeing if that clears it up.
If anyone has any other tips, it would be much appreciated!
Update:
Spent the weekend trying to re-root, flash Jellybean/Gapps to no avail. Same results (when Jelly bean is installed, Gapps will not flash using TWRP 2.2.2). I then wiped everything, leaving only TWRP. Cleared all caches, etc and tried to re-flash Jellybean; now NOTHING will flash successfully and there is no OS anymore, just TWRP.
How can I get an OS back on if TWRP isnt cooperating?
What errors do you get when trying to flash gapps or ROMs?

That's the version of TWRP I'm using; the error I'm getting when flashing anything is:
* Verifying filesystems...
* Verifying partition sizes...
Error flashing zip 'whateverthefileis.zip'
TWRP errors
I agree with nmaiorana, cm-10 from linaro is not throwing errors like you seem to be running into. Latest version I am using is: 10-20120831-2228. the gapps v that works with this rom is: gapps-jb20120726. In TWRP after clearing cache and dalvik cache, goto to Install, click on the ROM you want to install, then go back to install and click on the gapps file, then slide the button to the right. You can install multiple flash files this way in TWRP. See if that works.
[email protected]@dog
If you've tried reinstalling every version of TWRP and you have tried installing different ROMs and they all return the exact error you posted, try this:
fastboot oem format
...and then reinstall TWRP. If that doesn't work, fastboot may not be working to correctly flash information to the recovery partition. If that's the case you may need to replace your bootloader, but not with fastboot. TWRP probably wouldn't work either and you don't want to open the case to do the shorting trick unless you have to.
My suggestion would be to use adb to install TWRP and see if that makes a difference. If that works and you can flash ROMs normally, replace your bootloader right away.
At least that's what I would try.
Pull the recovery log and see if it gives you more details on what's causing the flash to fail...
Attempt to install the gapps package. After it fails, run the following adb command
Code:
adb pull /cache/recovery/last_log recovery_log.txt
You'll find the recovery_log.txt file in your current working directory. Copy and paste the contents of the log file into pastebin.com and share the URL here.

will try these in the next few days and see if anything works.
btw, ive tried every recent rom/gapps with no luck, so it doesnt seem to be a version-issue.
OK, I might get trolled unrelentlessly, but right now I don't care...
The girlfriend loved the look of some of these themes, and asked me to install one. I didn't realize at the time that not being on a TW-based ROM that it would fail as badly as it has.
At this point in time, I can get into the OS, see her home screen. Google acct info is completely gone, home button does not work, and no matter what order of operations I use in terms of bringing this thing back to life will work. HELP.
TB will fail to restore ACTUAL settings for "Account", etc. If/when it does finish, the phone boots straight to boot-animation, but does not go any further, period.
I've been at this for 2hrs now, and I'm getting nowhere. Do I need to install a TW-based ROM, THEN wipe again and install AOSP like she had before?
For clarification, I've tried wiping EVERYTHING, including full reset in CWM.
The problem is that I get a FC on "False.4.1.2-eng-nocoast.20121030.123453", and the status-bar is completely gone. I can use TB to remove the "False" apk, but I can't find a way to get the status bar back. I've tried installing the ROM fresh after full wipe of all caches, plus factory-wipe from within CWM. All this amounts to is the ROM booting to its splash-screen without continuing, OR getting to Android, but the home button doesn't work, and there is no way to associate a Google account with it at that point in time. I thought I could remedy this by simply having TB update.zip run before first boot after fresh install, but even though it allows the Play store and other Google apks to install, it won't let me associate an account for Google. The list consists of Exchange and something else.
Basically - I need to know if this means I have to Odin back, start over...or if there is some way to get the phone to recognize the 2 missing components without doing that.
I do have one nandroid, but it was done right after the initial realization of failure with the theme install, so it essentially puts me back to square-one.
You need to be on a tw rom; as that theme is tied into the tw framework.
What you should do is:
-do a full wipe in recovery
-download / flash your tw rom of choice
-flash the theme
In the future, tw / aosp themes are meant to be used on the respective rom source.

What recovery are you using? If you flash twrp and wipe the system, along with the caches and factory, that will definitely be the end of that.
And you flashed the same rom with the theme?

If you're able to get into the os, I would install the goo manager app > menu > install open script recovery > install twrp recovery. Then boot into recovery, make sure to wipe the system. That should do it, cuz just seems something isn't wiping. Additionally, I may re-down that rom if its giving you issues; did you modify the zip at all?

So, I got TWRP 2.3 on, wiped everything, flashed the ROM, Gapps, and ran Fix Permissions (which resulted with "failed"), and rebooted. Same story - goes into Android, home button doesn't work, and no Google account associated with the phone. Also, no menu option to add one. There is only "Corporate" and "Email".

This particular ROM uses a different SU app that I hadn't seen before using it, but I have the same phone with the same ROM, and it runs as the title says, "Liquid Smooth". So it's not an issue with the ROM or how it was packed. I'm trying a different ROM now, to see if I have better luck.

I was going to suggest trying a different wrong, because the instructions I gave you should have worked, not to say you're doing it wrong. If i remember, that was was ported, so it could have inherent issues, or some unknown ones; I haven't flashed it yet, so I can't advise. Flash aokp, I know everything is working there.

OK, here's the latest:
-Wiped everything in TWRP - caches, system, data, basically every option for wiping in the menu.
-Flashed AOSP ROM by codefireX, yet another that I've used before, and has worked almost flawlessly for me.
-Flashed JusTunBean's Aroma installer for gapps, been using it for months with no issues.
-Boots to OS, home button now works, and the status bar is there. Immediately get a FC on Gmail, without opening any apps.
-Still no Google account, and no option within "Accounts" to add one. <----main problem at this point.

Nothing in the menu button to add accounts?
And with that aroma installer, are you adding the thing for the account setup, that prompts you for the gmail account etc? I don't use the aroma installer, but I know it lets you select which packages to install, and you may not be installing it.

Nothing at all in the menu for it :/
The gapps installer menu is Aroma-driven, but it has its own menu. It's designed to let you choose which gapps you want installed "inverted", and what, if any, additional features you'd like added. I've tried everything from completely foregoing installing them altogether, to installing all of them. There is no menu option for adding account setup.
Since all else had failed just Odin back to stock and reroot. Then you should be good to go. You also might have something on the internal sd card that is not playing nice. So id wipe that too then use odin. Make sure you get any pics etc saved first so you don't lose them.

That's the last thing I was gona have him do, but avoiding it if possible.
I figured it out. It had nothing to do with remnants of whatever messed it up in the first place. For the first time since I've used that specific gapps installer - it has failed me. You were right when you said it should be creating a google account prompt as a result of installing the gapps (I always thought that was part of the ROM, not the gapps zip).
I loaded the previous version of the gapps zip, it still uses Aroma, and it worked like a charm.
Thanks a TON for the persistence responses, I sincerely appreciate it. Nothing like looking like an ass to your girl when you think you know your Android...heh

Important info in the story:
Device: Nexus 7 (Rooted)
OS: Cyanogenmod 10.2.0
Overall problem: Google play not working or getting apps on working Google play system.
So let me start from the beginning. I was trying to get an app to work but the app kept saying i need root permission, so i went on SuperSU and i accidentally clicked a button that supposedly gets rid of supersu (no warning whatsoever). so to fix this problem i reboot my device that doesn't work. So i went in twrp and installed supersu. so now another problem arose. When i open Google play it says no connection, even though i can get on chrome and other things. so at this point i'm just concerned. i go home and tried uninstalling Google play and reinstall it. doesn't work. Then i try clearing cache, doesn't work, then data, still doesn't work. after that i try to delete my gmail account to see if that works, does not. so then i try on backing up my device with twrp, then making a whole new restore to get a fresh copy of cyanogenmod. everything works but i have no apps and data. so backup this new cyanogenmod and tried to go back on my old not working save and it wont restore, it says it failed. so i wipe all data so now i don't have an OS and then i solved that and got back rooted and installed cyanogenmod. the i try to just restore data from my old cyanogenmod and it goes through but this time on boot it optimizes apps, done with that, now is stuck in a infinite bootloader. so i restore to my old cyanogenmod and this is where i am now.
The overall question is how to i either fix google play store, or how do i port my apps and data to the working cyanogenmod Google play store?
If you can't follow with my terrible typing skills tell me and ill try to clarify. I just thought starting from the beginning of the problem would help.

My suggestion:
-----BACKUP EVERYTHING-----
Flash the stock factory image and the stock kernel, and go from there. You can easily reinstall a new CM, and reroot if you lost it in the process. WugFresh's N7 toolkit is great for this.
Also - I had problems with TWRP on my nexus. CWM touch works much better, I find.
EDIT: The N7 toolkit will restore everything to factory defaults, and can do backups as well.

Sure, what exactly are you having trouble with?
When you first start the app, it will ask for the version and device model. After that, it will ask for your recovery that you're currently running (maybe not in that order), select TWRP in your case. It will then download things, and the program will start up.

You don't have to go to advanced utilities. On the first screen, "backup", then "back to stock"
After that's done and everything works, you can root and flash custom recovery if you lost it.

First off, use TWRP instead, it's much easier to use and just works better in my opinion annnd you can themes.
I would recommend downloading it on the phone itself. It'll be located in the Download folder and ALWAYS make sure it says .zip otherwise it wont appear in recovery (for example .png files)
use an explorer app like root explorer and make sure it has .zip at the end of the name. :good:

First off, use TWRP instead, it's much easier to use and just works better in my opinion annnd you can themes.
I would recommend downloading it on the phone itself. It'll be located in the Download folder and ALWAYS make sure it says .zip otherwise it wont appear in recovery (for example .png files)

Yes it actually can be an issue. Some gapps have caused problems before especially when using 4.3 gapps for 4.4.2 ROMS.

I downloaded gapps for 4.4.2. went back to my backup i made before flashing the rom for the first time put the new gapps on reflashed the rom and then the gapps. When i booted for the first time i get a constant pop up that says setup wizard has stopped blamed the split screen and it just keeps popping up when i click ok. Any ideas?
Location is rom related not gapps. So obvious question: did you wipe everything? As for gapps just use any 4.4 gapps (pa preferred).

Yes i did wipe everything prior to flashing the ROM. Also flashed pa gapps and experienced the "set up wizard has stopped blame the split screen" pop up. Not sure what else to try
I have the Chinese version of the TAB S 8.4 T705C, as I need to get this otherwise I do not have 4G signal, but this version does not allow me to install anything rel;ated to google like play store or even gmail as I need to have google services to get this to work, once I install this it keeps closing, I wanted to install a custom rom but not able to find this inside the galaxy tab s section, I tried to install several other roms but I loose mobile signal, can anybody help me to make a custom rom for this version so that I can install all google software without loosing my mobile and 4G signal as I'm living in China
I'm sure there are t705 roms you can install in the development section.
I advise you install my version of TWRP. This will allow you to back up your radio partition, I also suggest you do a full backup for safety reasons.
Install your custom or stock Rom then restore the modem and EFS partition with TWRP.
Hopefully this will see your radio problems right.
