I have found a nandroid backup that is compatible with my device. Do I flash the .zip like a custom ROM? I tried extracting the folder to TWRP/BACKUPS/*number*/ but when I go to recovery and restore, it will not see the folder. What do I do?
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
TWRP expects the nandroid to be in a specific folder and the one you got probably has the incorrect device ID.
Go into TWRP > backup and make a nandroid only of your recovery.
Then go to /sdcard/TWRP/Backup and inside you should see another folder named with your phones device ID.
Open it and delete the contents.
Then copy the contents of the nandroid you want to restore into that folder.
When you go back to TWRP > Restore, it now should find the nandroid - IF that nandroid was made in a compatible TWRP version. If it was made in CWM you would have to use that recovery.
Kinda risky what you are trying to do unless you know exactly how that nandroid was created.
Better to flash a RUU, IMHO.
You say it's risky? Would this possibly brick my phone? I don't care if it won't boot up or soft bricked after this but do you recommend doing this or not?
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
I don't know....
Do you trust the source of the nandroid?
Do you know what exactly the person was running at the time?
Do you know with which recovery and version thereof it was created and if that is compatible with your recovery?
I wouldn't do it. Flash a RUU if you want to go back to stock.
a nandroid won't brick your device ! And there are no sense ruu files ... at least no carrier branded ones. And when you download the nand and check the recovery.log you can read all info.
You think i keep a thread up that will brick devices ?
Restoring a nandroid to get back to stock is very safe !

Errr, I have the RUU for the AT&T M8... I used it to restore one of my M8's to stock. When I upgraded it to the VIper 2.0 rom, the dual camera kept giving me a blocked warning. So I found the RUU for the phone and restored it to 4.4.2 Stock rom. But since I own 2 M8's I had one set up the way I like, so I just transfered the file to the second M8 and restore it to the phone. Worked like a charm. Funny how I have 2 M8's, had them both on Viper 2.1.0. One gives the dual camera warning, one doesn't. So I restore the one with the warning to stock, and the warning disappeared..
Yeah but what about people with a s-on device and a specific carrier..
Where are those ruu files ? There aren't any.....there is a very small selection of ruu files that can help a small group of people ! That's my point here. And who said he has a AT&T ..... Check my thread and check all the cid and main numbers then give me the links to the ruu files that are compatible with the nands i am hosting there.....get my point ?

Hey mate! No reason to get offended! I did not mean to question your integrity or something and much less to insult you. I did not and still do not have any idea where the OP got the nandroid from! He never referenced it! Could have been from a friend's phone created with who knows what! Could have been from God knows what shady website...
That's why I asked him: Do you trust the source?
How am I to know it's you?
Ah well i am not offended. But i don't think a nand will likely brick the phone as it doesn't flash a firmware or such....it's actually only software so it's pretty harmless and easy to recover from

I am sorry for getting you mad, but I don't lie. The RUU file is here on XDA, like all the wise guys say
"Do a search"
I did, I downloaded it and installed in on my M8. ONly carrier I found was for AT&T, the OP didn't say

You did. So I was letting him know there was a RUU for AT&T on XDA. He didn't mention what carrier he was with. Since that was the only RUU I found for the M8, I suggested it.

HUH You tell him to flash one in one breath, then state there is none in another. But IF he is on AT&T, I know there is one. I am not going to search for you, but if I run across it, I will drop a link maybe later.

Ugh....this is exactly why i want to stop posting on xda and withdraw from it completely. The main problem is that people flash things without knowing what it is....afterwards its "it didn't work" what now ? You can link a ruu and many people just execute it.
I'm not mad, i am misinterpreted.....i am making a point that's all.
Thanks and cheers. I will stop responding as it's the second time i believe you make me go off topic.
But flashing a nandroid backup that it's origins are unknown is like you said, unwise and could cause more problems than what it is worth. But not fatal, that I agree with. I also agree that sometimes posting here can lead to a whole lot of confusion, specially for beginners in flashing roms. Good thing about this is that this is one more area they can visit to get a link to return to stock before they return the phone for repair. So it wasn't all in vain. Sit, drink a beer (or coffee) relax and try to have a nice day.

HTC posted the RUU for AT&T quite some time ago: http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-att/news/
Folks here keep saying "there are no RUUs", "HTC doesn't release RUUs anymore" and its simply not correct to make these statements as being generalized for all versions and all instances; although it seems to be true for a great many versions. If anything, this device is missing a good index of OTAs, RUUs, etc. by CID.
Not trying to pick a fight or anything, just want to prevent any misinformation.

I haven't visited this thread in a while because my problem was resolved but i had a question. I want to accept an OTA. I'm fairly sure I know how to do this (I have a stock NAND, recovery, and i know i have to relock my bootloader) this will update my firmware to 2.22.xx.x After this is done i can re unlock my bootloader right? Also would i be able to restore one of my TWRP backups or will restoring replace my firmware with the old one that i had when the backup was made?
Restoring a full backup after an ota will replace your OS so that's not an option because you don't want to go back to your old (before ota) situation it will not replace the firmware. Only restore data ! And no need to relock the bootloader for an ota.....totally unnecessary !

Thanks for the reply! So bootloader can stay unlocked? In all the threads I checked you have to be relocked by doing "fastboot oem lock" but ok I'll take your word for it! Also you say that restoring isn't good so I'll have to stick with reflashing ROMs from scratch?
I think we are mixing things up. If you are already running the latest based roms why would you update ?
Why would you update to the 2.22 or higher base and then go back to a 1.54 based rom ?

Try finding out your CID (using CID getter from Play Store), and your main version, fastboot getvar version-main.
Post it here, me or somebody else will help you further.
You might as well flash nandroid of your stock ROM (once you know exactly which one).

Can i get the CID thru fastboot as well? Unfortunate the screen flickers to much when the phone is normally booted, works fine in recovery.
Is there a way to recognize nandroid? I have probably few on hdd but i dont remember which one can be from One.
Fastboot oem readcid
The only way you can confirm your nandroid is by restoring it, or checking the time and date

I don't recommend doing it, though. But, once you know your cid and main version, it's very likely that you can find one around here.
You can check here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975140
If they have one for you, as soon as you got your cid and main
My CID is VODAP0001, had it in notes, as far i can see the rom is Vod UK. I'll try to check it and see what will happen.
Thanks You
In that case its more important that the main version matches instead of the cid.

The one that matches your main version. In your case, it will look probably something like x.xx.161.xx.
This "161" stands for UK. Then, find nandroid that matches it (try mine for VODAP102, they should match), flash it and go to service.
edit : didn't saw page 2
Yeap the version is 1.28.161.9.
Which way gonna be better now? Nandroid or RUU? Nandroid i have to do before relocking the phone? And RUU after?
RUU is easier i guess !
http://androidfiles.org/ruu/securek...Radio_1.1204.103.14_release_256488_signed.exe
It matches .... Charge the battery full first. Then relock the bootloader
Fastboot oem lock
Keep the phone in the bootloader and execute the ruu WITH admin rights.......
If it can't put your phone back to stock we must find a nandroid backup

Since I was upgrading from 2.17, I think nandroid is easier.
Read THIS, carefully. I used it to move from ICS custom ROM, to JB stock. I also posted the nandroid for 3.14 there, that you can use.
Whatever you guys want but to find a 1.28 stock backup is going to be tough i guess......at least there is none in the backup collection thread.
So you have 2 choices. Find your own stock nandroid backup, or install the ruu and update the phone all the way up to JB with official OTA's

Lol me. Locked the phone, tried RUU just to see that battery is below 30%. Had to unlock it again. Its weird cause im almost sure that the battery was over 70%.
When i put the phone in to repair can i ask them to replace battery as well? It looks that this one is kinda deing already.

@santod040 made a thread for this over here. It has all variants HBOOTS so it should work. & to answer your question yes you can. SuperCID allows you to flash other carriers ROM's, all though it's best you flash only the ones for your variant as other carriers may use other cellular bands and leave your phone unable to make calls or use mobile data if you use their ROM's.

Welcome! Feel free to ask more questions if you feel unsure of something. Best ask the simple questions rather than brick your phone and have an even tougher question to ask.
On the possible brick of the phone, yes it's very possible if you flash the wrong HBOOT. So be 100% sure you DO flash the correct one.
empty version number is something I had too, I was using TWRP and issue disappeared when I switched to Philz recovery (you may need to reflash the firmware afterwards though).
I agree, be sure to flash the right HBOOT version or you might have issues. SuperCID allows you to flash any RUU or firmware version, but it doesnt prevent getting into trouble unfortunately

Yes empty version number is a common issue with the TWRP 2.7.1.0.
I got this fixed by reflashing firmware and afterwards reflashing TWRP. After this everything was fine again, as version number showed up again in bootloader.
Please can anybody help, i havent got a clue about flashing my phone and have searched all over but cant get my head round it, please could somebody explain all the steps i need to do to get my phone back to how i had it.
My htc m8 said that i could update my software from 4.4.2 to 4.4.3 so i did and now my camera has become rubbish, i am dissapointed with it, i have done a factory reset and it is still the same.
I have found the software on this site that i think i need which is stock recovery 1.54.401.10 recovery.img.
My phone is an unlocked uk model bought from phones4u.
Could someone please explain to me how to put this rom on my phone, i have had a real good search but cant make sense of it all. It would be great if someone could explain it to me in a simple form.
All help is much appreciated.

First of all if the only problem you have is the camera you may want to see if you can fix that with some tweeks to the camera app, or send it in to HTC for repair if you have a warranty before going down this road.
but if you rather give this a try there is a couple of post and youtube videos you can look at. most importantly you will need to know some information about your phone. cid number what versions hboot and stuff before you start trying stuff.
here is a link to stock backups
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
but first you will need to unlock you bootloader, root your phone, and get S-off
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/vomerguides-m8-bootldr-unlock-s-off-t2800727
Here is a good video on how to do these if your a visual learner but watch it first and see if you feel comfortable doing all of this

He doesn't need s-off, and also no need to root it......It's not mandatory.
Unlock the bootloader
Flash a custom recovery
Make a full nandroid backup
Restore the older stock backup that matches your main version number.

S-off like a god mode, you can read and write partitions that are normally locked, and indeed do things like you described above. But as you only want a lower version of your stock rom i would not take it that far.

Hi everybody. Thanks for the info. My cid is htc__001
Managed to understand the flashing part just dont know now how to get s_off
What is ghe eaziest way for me.?
Its definitely not a fault with my camera it is the new firmware that i upgraded to that is my problem. I only did it cos i thiught the camera would be even better. Oh my god what a mistake. Uless i keep the phone super steady my pics and videos are a bit blurry. Before the update it took sharp pics and vids even if moving the phone. I could also take vids of fast moving stuff like fairground rides and when i played them back on phone i could pause them anywherep in the vid and the pause was always super sharp.
I have already had the issue with the coating coming off the camera lens but i took all that off and fixed that issue.
So yes thanks for your time guys and i would appreciate the bestest easiest way to take s off
Thanks
Look for firewater. When firewater fails you need sunshine. Those are the only 2 options to gain s-off !

I have unlocked it at htc dev and i have tried flashing the stock rom image using fastboot and clearing the cache but no changes on my phone.
Somebody also said that i needed to flash a nandroid backup first but when i download the philz touchwiz one i dont know what to do with it?
Any help please, this is a lot more complicated than i bargained for.

Hi Mr Hofs
I dont mean to contradict but in your first post you said i didnt need s_off and a bit later you said i needed firewater so i could get s_off.
Im really confused, do i need s_off to flash a stock rom to an earlier version, do i need to flash one of the nandroids first like you said and then flash the stock, if so i didnt see where your thread was telling me how to flash a nandroid rom.
Im sorry if i am coming across as a bit thick but the info i am getting from everyone on the net does loads of contradicting and makes it very confusing.
Cheers
Mick..
No you do not need S-OFF to flash a lower version of software. what you need in total is :
1: unlocked bootloader
2: the custom recovery which the nandroid is made with
3: the nandroid backup that matches your software but a lower version (probably the 1.54 base)
4: unpack the nandroid backup to the respective folder on the internal memory
5: perform a full wipe in the recovery (NOT the sdcard/internal memory of course)
6: restore the nandroid and reboot to check it works
7: flash back the stock htc recovery to enable OTA again (if you wish to upgrade in the future)

Cheers

it's all pretty logical, don't think to far outside the box. Getting the files in the correct place is the hardest part, flashing is easy

Hello Again
Ok i think im getting it, i can now boot the phone using phils touchwiz, comes up with the interface but for the life in me i cant make it backup or restore from where i want.
I did a backup and it saved it to the phones internal storage but i cant see the backup using any file managers but it is there if i try to restore the backup using the interface.
Long story short i cant make it find the files i want to restore, i have changed the path in the settings but just cant get it to work.
Please please help.
Cheers
Hey guys,
I dropped my HTC One M8 today, and now it has a crack in the screen.
Well, I wanted to go back to the store to get it replaced under warranty, but I needed to unroot & go back to stock first.
So at home I tried to go back to stock and stuff, but it just didn't work. That is where **** hit the fan.
Right now, I can't boot into Android, can't boot intro recovery. Everytime I start my phone it boots into FASTBOOT USB, and I have the following screen: *see attachment*
I really don't know what to do, I've been searching for serveral hours and my guess is I hard-bricked it...
Please, please tell me there is a way to make it boot into android again...?

Do you still have TWRP installed? Boot into recovery from your bootloader, and restore a backup. (You should have made one before you tried returning to stock)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376 If you are talking about this thread, yes I checked it.
I downloaded several RUU's and they all say : 'MODEL-ID error, please download the correct RUU for your device'
I am going to try to change the CID to SuperCid but don't think it will work since I can't change my S-ON to S-OFF

Yea being s-on I don't think you can what is your cid and what carrier do you have maybe someone can modify one of the ruus to work with your cid cause it seems the ruu is checking your cid and it doesn't match for the ruu so it isn't working. Have you tried reflashing twrp and seeing if you can enter recovery again then maybe restore one of the backups from the backups thread. I don't know how much help I can actually be cause I'm just a flasher hopefully someone with more experience and knowledge can jump in and help you I'm just suggesting what I would do in your situation. I hope you get your phone booted again though
Omg i did it
I just started the whole process again of unlocking my bootloader and stuff, using the AOI Toolkit, and I am in the PhiliZ Touch CLockworkmod now ! Thank you all for helping me, I will carefully unroot now and bring my phone back

First of all, he can't boot into system.
Second of all, everything you've mentioned needs S-Off. He is S-On.
Third of all, HTC US is different than other regions. Most of the other RUUs that have been made available are not found on HTC's websites. Most are leaked versions, I believe.
And no. It isn't in any RUU threads on XDA.

Do me a favor and don't quote me no more bs like that when all I'm trying to do is help. Thank you for your unnecessary two cents

I edited it as soon as I posted it and read ahead. I agree I should have read ahead first, but as far as nobody helping.....
Incorrect.
I started by helping him in another thread. I would have continued helping him here, but I had to go out to do real life stuff.
Anyway, the suggestions you gave wouldn't have worked.

It's cool I'm already over it. I know there are alot more people on here smarter then me about this phone stuff. All I really know how to do is read search and flash. This is the first phone I've unlocked and rooted and stuff like that so all this is new to me anyway. So no problem man.

Chances are, I'm no smarter than you are. Read and search and learn. That's what we all do here.
And sharing knowledge is what this site is based on. Please continue to try to help others.
Just don't be offended if someone corrects you. I do agree that I could have done it in a more tactful manner though. I can see how my post might have come across as abrasive, but that was not intended.
Hello everyone, I I just got an M9 at my local Telus store and I would like to be able to do everything with it like I am able to do with my M7, so I know I will need to use sunshine to get S-OFF and I would also like to be able to change everything from the rom to the kernel to the OS, everything, so I was just wondering if someone could let me know the best order to go about doing things, meaning should I do sunshine first then worry about flashing a recovery and all that, or should I do the recovery first so that I can backup the phones current state? The phone currently says this in the hboot screen:
*** LOCKED ***
LK-1.0.0.0000
OS-1.32.661.6
and this is what it says on the phones Setting-About-Software screen:
Android version
5.0.2
HTC Sense version
7.0
Like I mentioned before, it would probably be best if I can make a backup of the phones current state just in case there are any issues, so to do that I know I need a recovery, but do I need to do the HTC Dev unlocker before I can do so? or do I have to flash a recovery first before everything else?
Now, before anyone gets upset with me for asking these questions because they have most likely been asked 1000 times before, I am not asking to be spoon feed all the details step by step, I am just asking to be pointed in the right direction and asking for you guy's opinions on the best way to go about doing things so that I do them right the first time... So if anyone could please take a minute to help me out and get me pointed in the right direction then it would be greatly appreciated... thank you very much...

First thing you should do is unlock your bootloader. After that you can install twrp and flash supersu (most can be found here) Once you are rooted run sunshine. After that the sky is the limit. You will be free to flash anything and everything. I know because I've done it. If you want to convert to a developers edition there is a post here. Personally I do not use my stock recovery or system image backups to download ota's. I prefer to run an RUU and do fresh installs. Reason why is because I am constantly changing firmware and roms. A lot of roms are based on the WWE firmware.
let me know if you have any more questions

Thank you very much for the tips.. Do I use the HTC Dev website to unlock the bootloader? I seen a link in the dev thread that said Unlock bootloader without HTCDev(root required), but I bet that the HTCDev way is probably the best best. which did you use? I'm not at home right now so I will begin when I get home later on tonight and if I need anything else I will post back, plus I post back to say how everything goes.. Thanks again for help, it is very much appreciated...

I've used htcdev for all 2 out o 3 of my m9's. third one is a developer edition so it wasn't needed.
just note download mode is fastboot mode on the m9. htcdev says to boot to fastboot mode and if you do not know than you can waste hours trying to figure it out.

Ok so I got the bootloader unlocked and TWRP installed, right now I am taking a backup of the phones current state just in case. Now I just need to flash the SuperSU beta from the link you provided and then run sunshine, after that I would like to flash the latest OS for my phone, but I am not sure which version to use, I think this one is correct http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/firmware-red-t3097678 but I am not 100% sure, do you know if this is the correct latest version for my phone?
Also should I supercid my phone before updating the firmware by entering "fastboot oem writecid 11111111" while in download mode? because my cid is TELUS001 and I do not see that cid listed in the androidinfo.txt file that is in the firmware zip...
Thanks again for all your help...
**UPDATE** I now have S-OFF, I can't believe how smooth the whole process is now with sunshine compared to almost all of my other HTC phones, hats off to those guys for sure... Thank you very much for getting me this far!!! I appreciate it very much...

I was actually just going to tell you to type
Code:
fastboot getvar all
while in download mode and to copy and paste that into a file a text file somewhere so you always have it. then you can supercid. I actually have never seen any firmware for your carrier. what is your mid? this is where I get all of my firmware from. I learned how to remove the red text using hex editor and I also throw in a custom splash screen before I flash.
Here is a link for your stock firmware. not sure what the most up to date is but most custom roms are using the WWE firmware anyways.
p.s. either quote me or tag me if you need a faster response. I'm not getting notifications otherwise.

My mid is 0PJA11000 but the one that is listed in the androidinfo.txt file of the firmware that I linked earlier is 0PJA10000, does this mean I cant use it? in all I plan to flash ViperOneM9 3.5.0 for the rom and it says it requires 2.10 but my phone is currently at 1.32

I honestly don't know if the hardware is any different but it looks like your mid is the same as the dev ed. check this one out. @clsA is very knowledgeable on the m9. I learned a lot of what I know from his posts.
Personally I have gotten so relaxed that I just change my mid and cid to whatever it is I want to flash and just go for it. But I also understand that I'm risking a brick by doing so..lol

If going to dev ed I have had better luck running an RUU and accepting ota's as far as the radio goes. my reception went from 2 bars to full bars doing it that way verses just flashing the newest firmware. But it is a very long and tedious process and since you just got your m9 I'm sure you want to use it already..
What rom are you thinking about flashing?

@bigp951
Ok so I got the firmware updated to the latest international version 2.10 and was able to flash the ViperOne Rom and I love it just like I did for my M7... Everything is working great, except I have the problem that you mentioned would happen, I only show 1 bar for my signal strength, could you please let me know exactly what you had to do to fix it? Also, I would just like to say thank you once more, you helped me out a great deal and you made my upgrade to the M9 an absolute cake walk, so thank you very much for everything and for explaining the proper steps to take, I appreciate it very much...
