I have a Samsung Rugby Smart purchased from Consumer Cellular about a year ago, in attempting to install Clockwork Recovery on it yesterday I managed to flash the incorrect ROM to my phone, and now the device boots up with the ATT animation and contains ATT apps. I have run Factory Reset, which does not restore any of the Consumer Cellular stuff, and attempted to flash a different ROM to the device from the Rugby Smart Super Thread but these are understandable all ATT.
I have a clockworkmod backup from when the phone was first purchased, will restoring this backup revert my phone from ATT to Consumer Cellular? Is there a way to restore the Consumer Cellular options? I only wanted to install Clockwork Recovery so I could root the phone, but I do not understand now how to return it to factory default or if that is even possible.
Any assistance in how to proceed is appreciated, I wanted to double check with individuals more experienced than myself before attempting to progress further.

Are there any hidden menus on the stock rom? Are there hidden menus on other ROMs?
For example :*#22745927 hidden menu for RMNET + DM + MODEM mode and *#7284# enter to PhoneUtil, LTE is turned on via *#*#4636#*#*
What are these for? How many of them are there?

What the heck is the difference between CWM vs TWRP vs NV backup vs boot in recovery for nandroid backup?
What are all of these?? what type of backups do each one make?
I think NV is specifically for IMEI, but wont cw, twrp, or nandroid cover this?
Is nandroid a term used for CWM/TWRP backups?
How is the stock recovery?
How does something like this compare with just using twrp or cwm?

You'll have to try out the dialer codes to see which work and which don't. Just be careful as there are a couple that will reset your phone.
Recovery, CWM and TWRP are two different custom recoveries. They allow you to do stuff that the stock e3 recovery won't, like flash custom mods, ROM's, etc. Of the two TWRP is gaining ground as the most popular recovery of choice for the extra options it has over CWM. An NV backup is IMEI specific as that is all it backs up is your IMEI. CWM/TWRP backups (nandroid backup) take a snapshot of your system as is at that moment and can be restored at a later date or if a mod you do doesn't work. Nandroids do not back up modem(radio) or IMEI information.
The toolkit is a computer based program that does all this, except the IMEI stuff, and more but you need to have your phone hooked to the computer in order to use it, the CWM/TWRP recoveries are all phone based.
Hope this info helps a little.

Thanks Jethro! I gave you a thanks.
So these are called dialer codes?..... what are they generally used for? I dont want to reset my phone by accident.
If its just a regular phone reset with no data loss then ok, i'll give that a shot and record which ones work with my Rogers i747m model.
So essentially twrp and cwm creates an image called nandroid.
NV collects imei info
What type of files do stock recovery give you?
Oh I also ran across something claled Titanium backup.......how does that compare with twrp and cwm?
As for the toolkit, is that the only difference? Its that
1) its a cpu based program
2) it baiscally has recover, unlock, drivers, and flashing rom all programmed into 1 place?
So I can back up with twrp, cwm, and the toolkit if i wanted to be OCD about it?

The dialer codes are "hidden" as they are used by service techs who repair phones and generally aren't suppposed to be used by the end user lol. But then again the end user isn't supposed to root and install custom software either
I don't think stock recovery has an option to back up anything it is just used to install over-the-air updates and official software.
Titanium backup allows you to back up various things in android such as SMS, MMS, call logs apps and thier data(app settings, game saves). You can only back up app data if your rooted. If your going to be flashing ROMs then you will want either Titanium back or My back up root<--does the same stuff as Titanium back only easier user interface.
Right on the money about the toolkit. You can install it on your computer and browse through the menus and stuff without hooking up your phone to see all the stuff it actually does. Even though the option is there I don't think it will back up imei stuff or carrier(SIM) unlock this phone yet.
Yes you can do as many backups as you like lol. Just keep in mind the recovery based back ups are recovery dependant. If you make a recovery with CWM then switch recoveries to TWRP the backup you made with CWM won't be campatible with TWRP. I suggest picking a recovery(hint,hint...TWRP lol) and sticking with it. I seriously advise reading through this thread before doing any major flashing and back up your imei info and saving it a couple different places.
I suggested picking a recovery and sticking with it because even though tiny there is always that chance that something could go wrong during a flash and brick your phone(soft or hard). Flashing ROMs that chance is very slim and if something does go wrong its usually just a soft brick and easy to recover from(restore a nandroid you created usually), unless you flash a ROM from some other device, thats could potentially wreck your phone. Flashing recoveries that chance is still also small but if something goes wrong it will be harder to recover from as now there won't be a recovery and you'll have to flash using odin through download mode and can be a pain. Remember I said slim chances of flashed going bad, just be aware that no matter how slim, it could still happen. The chances of winning the lottery are slim but someone always wins it lol.

wait so you are not recommending me to back up a twrp and then back up a cwm?
Cant twrp still restore with twrp and cwm with cwm?
Yes you can do both but they arent compatible with each other. You are right twrp with twrp and cwm with cwm. The point I was trying to make is that you should pick one recovery or the other and stick with it. Nandroid are fairly large in size and will eat up a lot of space. Not to mention having to flash back and forth between recoveries. In the end thier is no reason why you can't except the inconvenience of dealing with two recoveries thag arent compatible with each other.
Hello Forums,
I recently upgraded my Evo 3d and my wife's blackberry (Verizon) to 2 Sprints Galaxy s3. My wife decided she wanted hers rooted for tweaks for better battery life. I rooted mine so I could use custom firmware for the device. I have ran into a problem...
1. Whichever recovery I use (TWRP or CWM) on either device; when restoring the backup I have made; we must do a factory reset in order to have functionality for anything. It boot loops even after wiping all partitions multiple times, and restoring backups.
2.Tried to restore, factory data reset, and data partition restore. bootloops(more than likely not to work but figured I would try)
I am wanting to test out different Roms and My wife if her phone decides to freeze and needs to restore were screwed. Even while using Titanium Backup to restore data. As it is quite bothersome when you have to set up our phones every time after a restore....
Am I going to have to use ODIN, Mobile ODIN or would there be a way to use custom recoveries without having to reset our phones.
PS:
It seems to me to reside in how any recovery is backing up the data partition. Either that or something on our phones may be locked (that I am not aware of)as far as reading the data from recovery.
Seems like I ha e made a noob mistake. Have to unlock bootloader on devices...
Hey moderators you can close this thread thank you!
So I got a warranty replacement S3 because of some hardware problems with my current S3. I'm attempting to backup the old phone and restore it to the new phone. I tried using My Backup Pro and it didn't restore any of the account settings. So I attempted to use Kies and seems to back up fine but when I attempt to restore to the new phone the "Email Account Information" and "Network settings and bookmark information" items are there in the list but are greyed out and I can't select them.
My phone is on stock JB 4.1.1 and is not rooted. I know that if I root the phone the backups can include all information and settings from within the apps which would be nice but I'm not sure I want to root the old phone just to backup and then unroot it to return it to AT&T. If that solves the issue of not having to input all the account information again maybe it'll be worth it but I haven't really kept up on the rooting/flashing/etc issues with this phone/OS. I'm not a complete newb to flashing/rooting/jailbreaking but the s3 is my first droid (WM phones back in the day and iPhones until s3 came out) and so far I've been happy enough with the stock android that I haven't felt any need to root or flash before now (especially since when S3 first came out rooting was irreversible for warranty purposes to my understanding).
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Hello all!
This is my first foray into the world of custom Android systems, and I'm having a hell of a time with it... if somebody would be able to help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.
First off, the situation:
I am on Sprint, and I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 (SPH-L710) from Sprint to use as a backup phone, I used it for a while on Stock, then deactivated it so I could give it to my wife. First though, I wanted to put a custom ROM on it, and experiment/play around a bit and see what this world of options could do for me. Long story short, I ended up flashing an AICP ROM, and everything seemed to go smoothly, but when I went to activate the phone on my account again and it would not work no matter what I tried (details below). I figured maybe I could activate on the stock setup then just restore my custom setup, so I tried to revert to my stock ROM backup and I couldn't do anything because I was constantly getting messages that various programs had closed... Then I tried to wipe and restore my custom ROM backup and I get stuck in a boot loop... so I tried to flash a stock recovery and I get stuck in a boot loop... I'm out of ideas here, and now I'm stuck with a phone I can't use or do anything with, and I can't activate.
Details:
The initial rooting/install process seemed to work ok, and was fairly straightforward. I followed various guides on http://galaxys3root.com/ to get my phone rooted and backed up (Don't recall which ones now, but I've read through so much by now I don't know if it matters...).
My phone:
Samsung Galaxy S3 (Sprint) SPH-L710
Modem: L710SPRDNJ2
My Desktop:
Debian Linux
Here's the steps I performed:
Rebooted phone in Odin mode
Downloaded CWM S3 Sprint Recovery from the http://galaxys3root.com/ website (can't find the link any more)
Flashed the CWM recovery using Heimdall then rebooted phone into CWM
Installed SuperSU through CWM, then rebooted
Checked that the phone was rooted successfully (it was), then ran Titanium Backup on the whole device to my SD card, then copied the backup files to my desktop computer
Rebooted into CWM, and performed a backup through CWM, then rebooted and copied the CWM backup to my desktop.
Downloaded AICP Rom for my phone from here: http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/GalaxyS3Sprint/roms/AICP/aicp_d2spr_lp-10.0-RELEASE-20150707.zip, put it on my SD card, then installed it through CWM and rebooted
At this point, I was happy with how everything was working, so I did some minor theme customizations then made another backup through CWM, and copied it to my computer, but I did NOT run Titanium this time...
After all of this, I tried to go ahead and activate it through the Sprint web service. This process failed continuously with an unhelpful error message of "Sorry, this device can't be activated right now". I then got on Chat to see if they could activate it manually, and then the problems began. They did their thing activating the phone, but when I booted up I got no data connectivity, and couldn't make calls, and the SIM was not changing over to the new number. I was on the chat with them for over an hour trying to get the situation resolved, but that finally ended when they started asking me to punch in ## codes, because I discovered that none of them worked on my custom ROM. Some quick research told me that this was non-trivial to get around so I had them switch everything back and I started researching the issue.
I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626638&highlight=sph-l710 that looked like it would let me do what I needed from the custom ROM, but I couldn't tell if it would fix my problem for sure, so I figured "I'll just restore my stock setup from that backup I took, activate it and update, then start over". This is when things got really frustrating...
First I rebooted into CWM, went to 'backup/restore', and restored my stock backup
Rebooted, and as soon as I got past the lock screen, I get inundated with messages of various apps being closed unexpectedly.
I researched a bit, discovered the issue may be caused by stale dalvik cache, so I rebooted into CWM, cleared the dalvik cache, formatted the /cache partition, then tried to restore the stock backup again, but this time I get stuck in a boot loop.
I then rebooted into CWM, tried to restore the backup of my AICP ROM, only to be stuck in a boot loop as well.
Trying to get into any usable system, I rebooted to CWM, cleared dalvik cache, then formatted /cache, /data, and /system just to be sure, and re-flashed the base AICP ROM I started with. This worked fine, and before long I had stock AICP back
Since I still couldn't get the phone to activate in the custom ROM, and my backups are apparently completely useless, I rebooted into CWM, wiped dalvik, /cache, /data, and /system again and tried to install a different stock ROM I found in the XDA forums (here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-sprint/development/stock-rom-4-4-2-t3010642) only to be greeted by another bootloop
At this point I've spent well over 24 man-hours trying to get this to work, reading, researching, flashing, etc all to no avail. Nothing I do seems to work, and it seems like every article, tutorial, or forum thread I read either has nothing to do with my device, is too old, or doesn't describe my problem.
I'm at wits end, and am so frustrated I'm ready to just give up and smash this device and buy a new one... My questions to the community are as follows:
I know I screwed up on a couple of things, but in my initial research of doing this there was no indication that these were even things I needed to watch out for... Is there any more organized sources of information for doing this sort of thing?
Does anybody else out there use Sprint on a custom ROM, and if so how you you pull this off
Where else have I screwed up, and how can I fix this situation? (My end goal is still to get the S3 onto Sprint with a custom ROM)
What can I do differently next time? I would like to figure this out and do it to other phones and devices I have, but if it's this much trouble every time, I just don't have the time to mess with it.
Thank you in advance, and I appreciate any information that the community can provide.
This sounds like a CWM problem to me. If I were you, I'd boot the phone into Odin Mode and flash TWRP ( www.twrp.me ) then try flashing the latest aicp nightly downloaded from the official site ( www.aicp-rom.com ). Check the md5sums on everything! Then maybe try flashing a touchwiz ROM and activating your phone. Remember that you need to wipe the internal storage when you go between KitKat and lollipop.
I'm fairly certain you have to do activation with the stock Touchwiz roms -- once the phone is activated you can flash a custom.
You should go into recovery and wipe everything (System/data/etc) EXCEPT for the External SD Card
Power off - pull the battery for a few - power on directly into download mode
Odin NJ2 back onto the phone and reboot and activate it (skip through most of the setup since you'll flash a custom after)
Once you know it's activated and working under the stock Touchwiz, then again power off and Odin TWRP recovery
Then you can go back into recovery, wipe everything except External SD, and flash the custom rom back on.
Looks like swapping CWM for TWRP did the trick.
Flashed TWRP no problems, and put CleanBean on there to get the phone activated. Still wouldn't work automatically over the Sprint website, but I got on chat with them and they fixed me right up. Downloading a fresh copy of AICP now...
Is it worth it to keep the CWM backups I made earlier, or should I just go ahead and flush them? I figured just get rid of them since restoring them wasn't working anyway, but I figured I would ask.
Now to move all the data over to the new phone. Thanks so much for your help guys!

Get rid of them. TWRP can't restore CWM even if the backup is good
Hi all,
I know I'm a little late to the rooting-816 party, but I hope some of you experts are still around to give me some advice.
Here's my backstory:
I began learning to root for the first time a few weeks ago and soft-bricked my device a bunch of times in the process. I'm starting over and want to do everything right, once and for all, so I can get on with a functional, customized, rooted device and stop dealing with a variety of technical issues. So I'd like to ask your help in verifying if my resources are correct and up to date for the A5-CHL (Virgin Mobile USA HTC Desire 816).
The first time I tried to root, I used v_superuser's guide, installing the Clockworkmod recovery (CWM_Recovery_En.exe) and the SuperSU program they linked. Then I flashed a CyanogenMod ROM that probably wasn't meant for this device - it tried to recognize Sprint instead of Virgin Mobile as the carrier and refused to connect to the carrier's network, working only on WiFi and thus disabling call/text functionality. I considered this a soft-brick and found a way out by installing a stock ZIP (without replacing custom recovery) from insanelycool on VMRoms.
I then stuck with the stock ROM, OTA upgraded back to Lollipop, disabled HTC write protection thanks to Flar2 and CaptainTiiti, used the Clockworkmod recovery listed above to create a backup using default settings, installed this system app uninstaller, and started excising the copious amounts of VM/Google/HTC bloatware.
However, I got a little too cocky in thinking the backup would keep me safe, and uninstalled Google Account (because I despise the swipe up for Google thing). Upon realizing it caused some annoying "_____ has crashed" popups, I decided to restore from the CWM backup... aaaand my phone soft-bricked again. The ROM wouldn't load; I could only access the recovery (and maybe bootloader, I don't exactly remember).
So I reinstalled the stock ZIP I listed above, this time clearing out my custom recovery as well, because OTA updates were refusing to install. Finally, with the stock ROM+recovery, I was able to OTA update to Lollipop 5.0.2 (HTC's "software version 2.33.652.5") and now have a clean slate to start over.
Now, here are my questions:
CWM or TWRP recovery? As far as I can tell, CWM recovery's backup soft-bricked my phone, so I'm considering giving TWRP a shot.
If CWM, is this (CWM 6.0.4.7) the correct & most up-to-date CWM recovery installer for the A5-CHL? https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=3490#downloads
If TWRP, is this the correct & most up-to-date TWRP recovery installer for the A5_CHL? https://twrp.me/devices/htcdesire816.html
Is there a working-for-Virgin Mobile, well-supported, lightweight ROM you would recommend I use instead of stock?
Does anyone have a list of what stock apps (VM, HTC, Google) I can safely remove?
Is there a backup/restore utility out there that ACTUALLY restores a system to exactly how it was at the backup point? I've had failed restores over the last month on both my phone and my PC so I'm very cynical and skeptical. I hear people talk about Titanium but I don't understand how to use it.
Thank you so very much in advance for your help!! I really appreciate all the resources you folks have put together on XDA - I'm just hoping to make sure all of the resources I'm using are the best and most recent versions.
If you're still looking for advice, my VM D816 uses TWRP 3.0 and has worked very well with an unofficial CM 13.1 ROM for many months, and before that I used the stock ROM with decent enough success. I got the ROM I'm using from xda but I can't currently find the thread for it, but I'll post it if I can find it.
I'm planning however to flash the latest version of TWRP via the TWRP app on the Play Store, and perhaps update to the latest version of Lineage 14.1 which is here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-816/orig-development/rom-unofficial-cm14-a5-t3468631
Good luck on your quest.
