So I made a mistake because I was impatient
I had found the thread on changing the ringer volume and saw it suggested to use 920 Text Editor to do so. After editing the file I kept trying to save it, but 920 kept telling me that it couldn't save the file because the directory was read-only. So in Root Explorer I kept changing permissions. First the file, then the directory, then finally the entire "system" directory. Then I learned that 920 has a setting that needs checked to allow it to make root changes. Oops.
The problem is that now when I go to change ringtones and press the plus sign to add new ones, I get "No applications can perform this action. Enable disabled built-in application?" and I click "OK" but nothing happens. I also don't show anything in my disabled apps that would be used for such an operation. The other problem I noticed is that my wifi no longer works. I can turn it on and it can connect, but it will only use my data connection.
Is there a way I can reset my phone's files' default permissions? If not, will a factory reset change them? I had previously read that factory resets don't change permissions.
I'm open to any suggestions!

Is anyone else having issues with Root Explorer not saving the build prop right after edit. I go back in to system and the backup file is full size, but the file I edited was 0 kb . I checked the r/w icon so it would let me do it. I've done this at least a hundred times and had it work, but now it doesn't work right. The first few times I didn't notice what happened and rebooted. It was ugly, no boot animation, and black screen from there on.

mine works. what are you trying to do?
sorry i have to cover the basics
after you switch r/w to r/o are you long pressing build.prop and slecting "Open in Text Editor"?
how are you saving it? do you press "save & exit" or "save changes"?
have you tired uninstalling root explorer and reinstalling it?
Root Explorer
Yup, tried that. I even bought Root Manager and used it's buidprop editor, with the same results. Maybe it's the rom I'm Running. It's Desired Inc HD 3D V5. It worked with V3 though.
I had no problems editing the build.prop file using Root Explorer on the stock 2.3.4 OTA.
Can I do this with my lg nitro? I first deleted some system apps through nobloat. Since some settings options started to crash I decided to hard reset. Well that didn't do anything and I lost the backups as well. SO then I use root explorer to put the system apk in the system app folder. I do it but then I couldn't install any apps. Internal error 110. I realize my packageinstaller system app is off and I can't turn it on. I have no other apps on my phone anymore besides the ones that came with it and superuser and can't add any more. Help please!!!!!
I bought it off ebay so att store exchange is not an option and they have no inventory of this phone for warranty.
just curious, when you restored something with root explorer, did you fix permissions on restored files?
lol i am a noob. Fix permissions? Most likely no. Also I just copied the system apk and odex files from my sd card to the system/app folder using root explorer.
In that case it won't hurt try this first:
highlight all files that you copied (root explorer has multi selection feature), then long press on any of the highlighted files and select permissions, set "read" on all, and "write" only on owner, everything else uncheck.
after I hard reset I lost root explorer and all of my other apps from the market. I cant install them again.
Oh, I see.
So, did you try replace /system/app/PackageInstaller.apk ?
How do you know it's not running?
Another thing try if you haven't tried yet is to clear market's cache and data: Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> All -> Market
And someone suggested pull out sdcard.
And then finally there is this tutorial:
http://lifehacker.com/5714300/how-to-fix-installation-unsuccessful-errors-in-the-android-market
didn't work. How can i replace thew packageinstaller.apk?
i cant even hard reset or factory restore anymore
*Pretty please make a NANDROID backup before you do this. I know you just recently installed the ROM, so if you don't have much on there and don't mind to flash in the event that something goes wrong, then no worries. Still, it wouldn't hurt!!*
Basically, what we are doing here, is giving you the app, installing it on the phone and then copying the APK file from /data/app to /system/app. I don't know much about the Fassy, but the file system structure should be close.
There are two ways to do this. You can use ADB to execute the commands, or use a file explorer (I use Root Explorer) to move the APK file. I also picked a free APN app .
APN Manager Pro
Throw this on your external SD card. Once you have it on there, open up your File Manager.
Navigate to your external SD card(should be /mnt/sdcard/external_sd or something similar, we have already established our phones are slightly different, ha ha).
Find the file ale.android.apnmanagerwithanimation-1.apk and long press it. You should get a list of options. You want to select move.
Navigate back to your root directory.
Go to /system/app. Once you get there, depending on your file manager, you should have the option to set the permissions as r/w (read/write). By default, Root Explorer is always set to r/o (read only) on my phone.
Paste the APK file.
Long press the APK file and select permissions.
- You have three sets of privileges: Read/Write/Execute
- You have three sets of groups: Owner/Group/Others
- - Make sure Owner, Group and Others have checks under Read.
- - Make sure Owner has checks under Write.
- - There should not be any checks under Execute.
- - There should not be any checks on any of the special permissions.
Hit OK.
Click on the APK file and select install.
Once the install has completed (should be almost instantly) reboot the phone.
Now you have an app that is capable of setting APN information.
When the phone has booted back up, open the app and select Backup & Restore. Make a backup. If the new APN doesn't work properly, you will have a backup you can fallback to.
Enter the information and hit save. Once you have done that you can select the APN and set it as the main. If you lose functions then restore the backup.
I hope this works out!!

what company do you need the info for
Boost mobile!
Rooted on stock ICS since release date. I've never had a problem accessing settings for Files folder until today. t989 would freeze upon hitting the setting button while in the Files folder, and a message would later pop up stating, "Unfortunately, Files has stopped." After I've replied with "Ok," second message would pop up stating, "TwLauncher not responding. Would you like to close it?" I can access all my folders in my Files folder, but not my Settings
I've already tried wiping dalvik-cache and reboot with no such luck. I'm wondering if I erased an important data using SD Maid app, cleaning SD card with corpse finder

The factory file manager app . Basically, I would access the "setting" in order to show or hide hidden files. Not a huge problem because I can access my hidden files through "Astro File Manager/Browser" app. It just a nuisance knowing that the problem exist I guess
I fixed the problem by clearing the data on the file.
Hi folks, I've never tried editing anything in WindowsApps under Windows RT 8.0 but now when I use version 8.1 I feel like playing with modern apps. From what I read in Windows 8 it was(is?) possible to fully access it by taking ownership of that folder. I did the same, changed owner from trustedinstaller to my user account and while under permissions it looks like my user has full access to all files I still can't edit anything, only read, execute and delete, no write. Is it possible to edit anything in WindowsApps under RT 8.1 or was it blocked since RT 8.0 or in both Windows RT and 8 and I just misread something?
Taking ownership allows you to edit the permissions. Editing the permissions enables adding the Write (or Full Control) permissions.

"under permissions it looks like my user has full access" - I've enabled full contol already and still I can't write anything, that's why I made this thread, to ask if it's possible at all.
Did you enable it for subfolders, etc.? Can you create a new folder directly under WindowsApps? Have you applied the permissions change yet?

Yep, I've enabled it for subfolders, gave full access to all users, unticked read only flags, changed owner... i've tried everything I could. And yes, I can create a new folder directly in windowsapps but not in applications subfolders where I can't perform any modifications except deleting.
I'm not currently using RT 8.1, but something is off, here. You're sure you have privileges on the subfolders (individual app folders), not just the WindowsApps folder? Each one has their own permissions.

Yes, I'm 100% sure that I have full control set for all subfolders. Strange thing is that I tried some random files in random app folders and some files are writeable and some are not, even in one folder. I think that MS did it on purpose to prevent users from modifying/cracking apps. All I wanted to do was to edit one xml file in Asphalt 7 folder to enable some graphical enhancements that are disabled for Windows RT and are stored in this xml as presets but no matter what I do I can't edit this file and believe me, I tried everything.
There are things I'm sure you could do - for example, opening a file or folder with FILE_FLAG_BACKUP_SEMANTICS lets you completely bypass ACLs, assuming you have the SE_BACKUP permissions (Administrators and other members of the "Backup Operators" security group).
One other possibility, that in fact sounds quite likely from your description: are you sure that the apps aren't *running* in the background? 8.1 makes apps suspend, not close, by default even if you do the swipe-to-bottom-of-screen gesture. Obviously, if the files are locked, you won't be able to edit them. That should give you a different error, but you never actually said what error you're getting.

I know that apps are tombstoned in 8.1 so you can fast resume like in WP and to fully close you need to swipe to bottom and hold unless tile flips but that's not the case as I tried that on fully closed apps. And the error is just typical "you need permission to perform this action". It looks like things are locked and impossible to access without some special trickery. So that's why in modern apps many crucial files like licenses or in-app purchase settings are stored in human readable files like xml, if there is no way to edit it, why encrypt? Either article that stated that you can gain full access to windowsapps wasn't exactly accurate or something has changed in 8.1, I don't have 8.0 so can't check.
I'm running into this issue as well in 8.1, and I had no issues in 8.0.
Anyone made progress? I have tried right after a reboot, without opening any apps (this is a store app), so the app shouldn't be running or in use.
I can confirm this. Even with full permissions I get "More permissions are needed to perform this action" when I try to create a new file. I can delete (move to trash) files just fine though, can't edit anything. Will investigate further later.
P.S. C:\Program Files>icacls windowsapps /t /c /q /reset seems to fix issues if your metro apps stop starting ?
This worked with windows 8

I'm running into the exact same problem, in Windows 8 I could write and edit files in the Windowsapps folder without any hassle (obviously with the correct permissions set), in Windows 8.1 this is not possible. Guess Microsoft toughened up the protection in this particular folder after the WSService Tokens Extractor was being used for turning trial apps into full versions
The apps are protected but if you make an new folder and move the files and rename you have full control hover for the apps to run need the unknown account which execute the program
