i cannot for the life of me get 1440p on youtube even when i search for 1440p and 4k videos it still only shows 1080p
You haven't got the updated app yet
If you update to the latest apk you will.

You have to install the Youtube version 5.9 to get access to 1440p Videos

You haven't had the update pushed to you yet. Either wait for it or manually download it like I did.

I know this device can play 1080p videos as I have tested this across my internal network. But it seems this device does not play videos (in 1080p) using the youtube app.
For example, if I play big buck bunny on my tablet it looks to only play it in 720p. I confirmed this by trying to load it up in the 3rd party app tubemate and it only shows options for 720p. Obviously this is not the best quality available because if you go to the video from your computer there is a 1080p option.
At any rate, has anyone else noticed this and is there a workaround or is youtube somehow blocking my device from the 1080p stream?
Thanks in advance.
I think you need a modified YouTube app that can be found somewhere else on xda, not sure if it will work on tablets though. You can also try Viral floating YouTube app

I have been using JetVD for ages, and it supports 1080p. Usually download clips through that app though, not watch.
Thanks for the replies guys but I think I found my answer. Apparently google/youtube is doing something on their side to make it difficult to get 1080p streams from mobile devices. I checked the thread below from one of the developers and he stated google has changed something to where you can't access the 1080p streams. At least not at the moment
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2413078&page=23
@Ettepetje I tried the jetvd app you mentioned using the latest version on their website and it too suffers from the same problem. Only 720p videos are available for download or watching.
@ChrisNee1988 Thanks for mentioning Viral. The link I posted above is from the developer's thread. That is where I found out 1080p streams are somehow being blocked by google.
I guess the next question is why would google do this? I have a device capable of resolutions beyond 1080p but yet I'm limited to a 720p stream.

Have you tried more than one clip? Not all is available, but many you can find in 1080p, at least on my phone I can.

Yep, I tried 5 different versions of big buck bunny as well multiple 1080p nature videos which I know for certain have 1080p counterparts and still the same result. I tried this on my galaxy note II and note 10.1 2014 and both have the same problem. The weird part is that applications like tubemate will even give me the option of downloading the 720p 3D version but not the 1080p version. Very odd indeed. if you know of any other apps to try let me know.

Can you watch 1080P Youtube video's from the stock browser in desktop mode?

sorry, I should've mentioned that earlier. I can get 1080p videos to play if I open the stock android browser and request the desktop site. After that, if I select the gear icon at the bottom to choose the resolution it gives the 1080p option.
Unfortunately, that solution is a little tedious. Not to mention it makes navigation a little more difficult when you're trying to watch a lot of videos.
I just came across this article that says YouTube is now playing videos in 1440p.
I'm not seeing this as an option for the videos I see when I search "4K"
Is there something I have to do, or just wait for an update?
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/themes-apps/youtube-app-support-2k-video-t2841657, just tested, video in 4K are awesome.

When trying to watch a 4k/UHD video on YouTube app, hit settings gear and you should see if the option for 1440 if you have the updated app.
2560x1440 is Quad HD.
3840x2160 is 4k.
YouTube will show videos in QuadHD (1440) in mobile devices
You need to update YouTube to last available version 5.9.0.10

Search 1440p. You'll get lots of videos then. You do need youtube 5.9 first.

YouTube doesn't even support 4k but there is a new update in which you can view videos in 1440p if the video is even uploaded in that high of a resolution.

Videos should be able to be viewed if they are available in 1440p or higher, just look up "4k video" and it should output after setting.
If it doesn't output, what version of YouTube do you have? Can be viewed under the Apps section in settings.

The official youtube application for android doesnt support resolution higher than 720p. Either install the application Viral Popup (youtube player) for a resolution up to 1080p or view the video from within a suitable browser. I ve heard that the lg g3 supports flash playback. If your browser can not play flash content then install the hacked version of flash player and the dolphin browser and you re set.

This is completely false. The official YT app will support up to 2k on compatible phones with 2k screens.
The official youtube app supports up to 1440p on the G3 and has done for nearly 2 months now, I use it all the time.
OP, I am not sure why you are not seeing it, have you tried to remove youtube (if system app "uninstall updates), wipe cache and data, reboot then reinstall and see if it works then.

Ah this is strange. I have been able to watch 1440 videos on my G3 the last time I checked. Maybe it has something to do with your regional settings. Where are you located?

Actually you are completely correct. I just tried to watch a few vids and I only get 720 for most or rarely 1080 (try the transformers trailer for 1080). Not sure what they did but maybe it is is a sort of content lock and they have stopped it being available on mobile devices. Either that or someone commented out a few lines of essential code!
easy
I got the 1440p optoin working on mine. Its very easy to do.
Stop the youtube app clear every thing delete it reboot. Now youtube 5.5 is back on the phone stop the app clear everything.
Now install youtube 5.9 akp you can download it everywhere search on google. After installing 5.9 reboot again
Nou go to playstore setting end disable autoupdate so that youtube will not be updated to 5.10
For me this worked perfect. Ps i just got the phone yesterday but im a quick learner.

Thanks but you can also just go to the app info and press uninstall updates. I imagine then you would not need to look for the 5.9 YouTube app which someone could have injected something nasty into if you got it from the wrong place. This method applies to all apps. I'm not really bothered if I can't watch 4k on my mobile as I don't use it for that myself so I don't mind waiting for when they update it again..if they do add the option again that is!
2k not 4k

Its a bug in the YouTube app. I have watched 2k (1440p) videos before via the app, but its only showing HD (720p) now. If you downgrade the app to a version before the update the 2k will work.

You can't. It's a Youtube / Android thing. It will most probably be solved when Marshmellow comes out.
Android does not support 4K resolution for the display... so Sony only implemented 4K in specific apps ( mainly Gallery & Video )...
all other apps will see the phone as 1080p only, including YouTube, so it will only show you 1080p option... there's two options
1- Google : update the Yt App to support this feature which might not be logical for them because... No. 2
2- Android 6 ( Marshmallow ) is supposed to support 4K, so Sony might be able to enable it on all other apps, or just create a white list of apps that could benefit from 4K display and enable 4K for them only to save power...
I saw something that you can install dolphin browser and then install flashplayer manually ( dont know either if it works on the last android os) and selecting desktop opt.
But thanks also for your comments guys this is some good information to know
There is a custom youtube app which has an option "Enable All qualities" this may allow you to view youtube content at the highest quality supported by android if it isnt avaliable
"OGYoutube"
An alternate solution would be using google chrome to open youtube.com (desktop) and watching a 4K video
(youtube can allow html5 playback which chrome and many other browsers can use)
