A wonderfull day to all. I've been a member here wayback long ago. I know for myself that I don't contribute here a lot. It's because I'm not a very techie person.
But when my mom gave me her old Galaxy Note 2 and try to lurk around here about this phone. I've read a lot of good things about this phone and it's capabilities. Now I'm really getting interested about some things. But almost all of those Applications, Roms, Custom Roms, Recoveries, and Kernels reqiure root access, which my phone doesn't have. Hehehe. I tried to read a lot of post about rooting, but there's a lot of things and terms that confuses me, like MJ5, MK9, Baseband, Modem, Knox enabled, etc. I know that these things need to be considered when rooting. And I know that if I messed things up, my phone wil turn into an expensive paper weight. Hehehe.
The first thing I want to try is to root my phone, and try installing and uninstall system apps and enjoy rooted capabilities. So I'm hoping for somebody that can guide me how can I root this Model and Version. Hoping for your kind consideration guys. As I'm new about this rooting things.
Note:
AFAIK the Android version of this phone is previously 4.1.2 out from the box (not sure though). Then my mom got it updated to 4.3 and noticed that "Knox" is already in the app drawer. But if i open Knox it says: "You need to download and install this app. Downloading via mobile networks may result in additional charges depending on your payment plan." and there's an "Install" button that can be press. Do I need this app or do I need to install this? Is it safe? The phone doesn't have warrranty anymore. And I'm planning to Root, Install Custom Recovery, and Custom ROM in the futere. But I want to do it gradually.
Thank you very much guys for helping people like me.

Knox is kinda security for phones which when installed secures it (you can google what KNOX really is,I wont go in detail). Now to answer your main question. You can do two things either root your current 4.3 firmware or update to 4.4.2 and root it.Most of the people rooted 4.4.2 after getting the official stock firmware and flash it through odin. If you want to stick to 4.3 firmware and only root and remove unwanted apps and enjoy root privileges then follow this guide to root your phone and have a custom recovery on it.This will trigger knox which means warranty will be void and knox status will be 0x1 and it cannot be reversed. It doesn't harm the phone at all.If you decide to upgrade to 4.4.2 stock ROM and want to root it follow this guide.Flash SuperSu from here via your custom recovery.

Hi again. Just followed your instruction. I chose to stick at 4.3 and have it started. I followed the instruction here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2531965. But after flashing Philz recovery and checked if its successful by trying the recovery, my stock recovery still appearing. Not the Philz recovery. I tried it twice. But still failed to have Philz recovery. And I checked my custom binary download, it says "Yes (2 counts)" and my knox is 1. After flashing thru odin, odin says "Pass" and my phone reboot automaticaly. But still no Philz recovery. Thanks.

I forgot to mention that you need to uncheck "auto reboot" in odin before you flash the recovery file.So once odin says pass the phone will be still in download mode.Unplug the usb cable from laptop ,pull the phone battery out to turn it off then wait for sometime plug the battery back in and then reboot directly into recovery by pressing volume up plus home plus power button.Your newly flashed recovery that is philz should load up.Try it and let me know.If that works then flash supersu from recovery without booting into your ROM.Once superSu is flashed reboot your phone and let it boot into android.

Woah! Thanks for your quick reply. I did what you said... And YES!!! I have a Philz Recovery Version 5.15 .0 now... I just skip the flashing of super su, because i want to use dr.ketan's Multitool Advance Version in rooting and in removing of bloatwares or dr.ketan's "Bloatware Remover"http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440951 to remove desired bloatwares only. Do you think it's fine? Thanks again.
But the sad part is...
Custom Binary Download: Yes (4 counts)
Knox Warranty Void: 1
Any harm with this status?

Only harm in tripping KNOX is that your warranty is void (so no samsung repair center will fix your phone for free).Regarding custom binary download when you flash official 4.3 or 4.4.2 STOCK ROM that would get reset.Yes you can use dr ketan's multi tool to reoot and deknox and debloat. Also I suggest you upgrade your philz recovery to 6.25.0 or 6.26.0 version just get that corresponding zip file of newer philz and flash it via your philz 5.0 and done.Enjoy your newly rooted note 2

Wahahaha!!! Huhuhu!!! But before anything else I would like to say Thanks again sir.
Im going crazy... Upon learning around with my Newly Rooted Note 2... I came to the point that I need to reset the phone to factory... I made a full back up using Philz Recov. It is created under internal storage... I forgot to copy it to my Ext_SD...Then make a reset under settings menu... And it got stucked to Samsung Logo. I have to pull the battery out... Then I remember that I made a backup... I quickly boot into recovery, then I cant see my backup. Realized that it is also have been erased during hard reset. Waaahahahaha....
Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of my Stock 4.3 N7100XXUEMK9_N7100COAEML2_N7100XXUEMJ9-COA(Romania/Cosmote) ROM. And now I'm having a hard time to search for my 4.3 STOCK ROM that can be really downloaded. There are some links that has a false download file.
Do you have a link for that file? Sorry for wasting too much of your time. But thanks really.

It might be difficult to get 4.3 stock ROM link.I can get you 4.4.2 FNG4 link .You would need to flash it via your existing philz recovery and you are set.
Dedoxed stock FNG4 post # 4
(no need to re root your phone, just follow instructions in post # 5).Or you can use dr ketan's tool to debloat etc.Good luck

Hi again. The instruction says "Use TWRP", is it ok if I use PhilzTouchReco? Just to inform you, I just downloaded official 4.4.2 (Philippines Openline) from sammonile and my phone is previously Romania (cosmote), and i'm from Philippines. I can use Romania(Cosmote) here in Philippines. Is it ok if I flash 4.4.2 Philippines(Openline)? And once I'm in 4.4.2, can I still use dr.ketan multitool adv in rooting, deknoxed, debloat and etc? Thank you very much sir.

Hi,
I got this after rooting my phone and I want to update the phone but I can't. Is there a possible fix? All I did was root and add 2 apps to the system folder (along with using some root programs that are Freedom and Link 2Sd)
Please Help
Unroot. Your phone. If you root your phone u can not make updates OTA.
Sent from my GT-N7100
You can upgrade software via odin
download latest firmware from Samsung-update
and flash it via odin and then root again
or use touchwiz custom roms with latest software
I unrooted and I still get that error ;/ any suggestions?
Download titanium backup
Clear data for two apps i.e.
Sysscope
Enterprise sysscope service
Carefully only wipe data nothing else
Reboot and ota update

1 more Q, doesn't flashing erase everything?

well after you flash stock firmware via odin just check ur status in download mode if its normal and official all good , if not enter stock recovery and wipe data .cache and if you have ever used any custom recovery then ur binary count can be solved using triangle away

Busy box will set your device status to modified.
Boot into download mode and check your flash counter is zero. If not download and run triangle away.
Once that's done, use Odin to flash stock firmware and then factory reset.

I had the same issue. I use AllShare Cast a lot and it (and other DRM dependent) apps won't work with a status of "modified." As everyone's figured out, newer stock ROMs have kernel modifications that prevent using Triangle Away to reset the counter/status.
Here's what I found to be the easiest way to get back to stock. Go to Samfirmware or Samsung-Updates and find an older ROM that's at least a couple of months old and install it using Odin. Use Triangle Away to reset your counter. If it doesn't work the ROM you have installed is too new and has Samsung's kernel modifications. After that's done, use SuperSU's unroot function to unroot your phone. After that you can download the latest stock ROM and install it via Odin; your status will be unaffected. I did all this without reseting so my apps and settings were untouched.

Will give it a shot
Edit:Luckily the "Status" thing glitched out and it ALWAYS shows Scanning... , no modified , no official, nothing. it lagged, so they agreed on fixing it. I'll send it later for repairs. thanks.
I have a Samsung Note 2 N7105 on stock EE UK firmware, rooted, and with chainfire's TriangleAway installed and used to reset the flash counter.
I can receive OTA updates via KIES and the phone's onboard updater, but I may have to restart the phone and run the update in the 5 minutes after reboot (during which TriangleAway suppresses superuser - tick System Modified Workaround in the settings), and also root after every update. It's a bit erratic. Depending whether I have triggered the modification scanner, my phone status may be Normal or Modified. Right now it's still Normal despite ~1000 hours of uptime.
It wasn't originally EE firmware, I had a couple of months of frankenstein CSC code. I flashed EE a couple OTA updates ago, then OTA/Kies'd it to its current state.
I dunno about AllShare Cast, I don't use it.
I've had people on here tell me that Samsung have to honour their warranty in the EU on rooted phones.
After lots of emails they sure as hell won't fix mine!
So thanks for the unrooting advice, I'll try this and try sending it back again

Use Mobile odin pro application for OTA or ROM flashing to keep device rooted.
So no need to root every time you change firmware.

Just tried this,
1-When Flashing an Old (couple of months back) or any ROM other than 4.1.2 , I get a SAMSUNG loop.
2-I flashed the Stock XEF DME6 ROM. Now my baseband is different, was DMF1 , now DME4.
3-I keep on getting CP: Unknown when dialing *#1234# , and I always have no Signal , and Airplane mode is grayed out.
Any help?

|Guide|How-To| Root & Install Custom Recovery for 4.3 / 4.4 Update |16 July 2014 |
Warning: Following any of these instructions will void your warranty, and could possibly cause irreparable harm to your device (i.e. bricked). If you do not understand these risks, stop here and do not proceed. If you do not know how to use Odin, stop here and do not proceed. I am not responsible for anything that happens to your device. YOU chose to follow this guide.
If you have not updated to 4.3, go here.
If you have not updated to 4.4, go here.
Finally, there is no guarantee that either method will work for you.
Root Method #1:
The first thing you should try is CF-Autoroot since this has worked for many users.
If you successfully root with this method, you can simply install Goo Manager or ROM Manager and install recovery.
This method failed for me after many attempts.
Edit:
Here is some potentially useful info for root method #1 from ansonantonym.
Root Method #2:
1) Reboot in to download mode
2) Flash TWRP with Odin via PDA
3) Reboot to recovery then flash SuperSu and the Knox Remover
4) Reboot
5) Download SuperSu from the Play Store
6) Open SuperSu and update the binary when prompted
7) Reboot
8) Enjoy rooted 4.3/4/4

Noob here, first off I unrooted a while ago, then took the ota 4.3, is the bootloader locked? Cause according to the cf auto root site if your bootloader is locked you'll probably brick your phone if you flash the auto root? Also do these steps have to be in order? I tried rooting by other means and installing supersu first, wouldn't work so I removed knox with the script, and then updated supersu in the play store and still nothing, can I try to flash cf auto root now and then update supersu in the play store? Thanks a million, need this thing rooted

Well, I'm not bricked, so I think that answers your question about the bootloader.
Do you have a custom recovery installed? I assume so since you say you flashed the Knox remover script. If you do have a custom recovery installed, just flash the SuperSu zip, then update in the Play Store.

Ah it is so nice to have root again... Thank you so much for putting up with a noob.
Crazy events of a noob that lead me to root
Installed ota 4.3
Tried to root and install superuser by odin and then custom recovery to flash
Root didn't happen because of knox
Could only get to CWM custom recovery if it was right after odin and battery pull?...
Flashed the script to remove knox, which did remove knox
Tried the same root method as above and no root access
Tried supersu and then updating in play with no success
Changed security update settings etc nothing
Reset delvik, cache, permissions, etc nothing
Different root method and files for odin, and custom recovery stuck
Used files from this thread, went into custom recovery and flashed supersu
Installed supersu from play store...
Updated the binary using custom recovery
Rebooted...
ROOT access, all root applications work fine and root sticks even after reboots
I never messed with cf auto root method
THANK you guys for your time effort and sharing, helps noobs out like me a lot!
Sweet! I've missed root since I upgraded using the OTA file you provided. Looking forward to much other great things coming from you
Thank You

Method two absolutely worked. Thank you so much. I was scared to flash TWRP but knowing you did it gave me the courage. Have full root and happy
questions about this root
Hi, I'm a little nervous with this root but I need the root as the phone is useless without it.
I have the [email protected] galaxy s3 I747 will all these files work with it im just double checking.
Also do you flash the knox remover the same way as you flash other things with the pda button?
Will I still be able to do factory restores?
Also I saw that knox remover removes a lot of apps, Can you install these deleted apps from the market if you need too?
THanks please let me know asap.
THANKS!!!! your a lifesaver didn't know how much longer i could take without root
Dunno where you guys got your 4.3 update from and how you got it working but I did the OTA and Root just does not want to stick. I used knox remover and Cf auto root but it loses root after a restart. SuperSu never opens and crashes as soon as you open it. Dunno where you guys got your 4.3 update from and how you got it working but I did the OTA and Root just does not want to stick. I used knox remover and Cf auto root but it loses root after a restart. SuperSu never opens and crashes as soon as you open it.

The second method worked great. I believe (and the way that worked for me) that you use your custom recovery to flash the knox script, not using Odin and pda. I don't think it removed anything other than knox, there is a different script for removing knox and att bloatware. Should still be able to factory reset... But can't guarantee that.

Root & Knox
When you go to Settings/More tab/Security/Device Administrators, You have KNOX and Android Device Manage. Both are unchecked on mine. So does that mean Knox is not working if unchecked and safe to try to Root?????

Those settings are just for granting device administrator privileges. If unchecked, Knox is still doing it's thing, just not at an administrative level.
Yes, it is safe to try and root.
I have Android Device Manager as admin. That way if I ever lose my device I can just log in to the Play Store and locate and / or wipe the device.
To do this just flash the recovery.img file using odin and clicking the pda button correct?
Is there a way to freeze Knox instead of deleting it in the event I would want to go back to full stock?
After you are rooted, use an app like Titanium Backup(pro) or My Backup pro. Both will freeze it.

I tried method 1 and failed.
Then tried method 2, but using a CMW tar that was posted yesterday.
I seem to be rooted!
So far no issues.. Just need to get everything setup as I had it in the leak.

Mine Note II is SGH-I317M with baseband version of I317MVLUCMK5 and KNOX.
I have tried CF-Auto-Root and Root SuperSU but weren't able to root my note II.
I have tried using different version of Odin, reinstalled the USB driver and tried using philz touch and cwm6 root to backup and root.
Nothing worked........Can't even start SuperSU.....
KNOX keep giving me security notice "An attempt to access a secure area on your device without authorisation has been blocked."
I also tried an updated Superuser. Still nothing worked....
Any idea anyone?
Thank you very much.

This is really weird, when I did this to my SGH-I747/M it was updated to stock 4.3 so it had KNOX and I got the same message as you but to disable it, all I did was open SuperSU and it prompts me to disable KNOX and then it's "fully" rooted and I could install a custom recovery after that.
I know it worked on the S3 because it's currently rooted running a custom ROM. Are you using the right version of Odin? I was trying to use 1.85 I think it was and it wasn't working at first, I tried 3.09 and it worked like a dream.
Did you remember to go into the Security Settings and turn off Reactivation Lock? I know this can play a factor when rooting with KNOX.
Also, KNOX never goes away, even though I'm running an AOSP ROM now on the S3, it still shows the KNOX counter with 0x1, even with it disabled. I can also not get any ROM's lower then 4.3 to work anymore so I can no longer run RootBox 4.2.2 on the S3.
I'm not sure if it's just me, or just my phone, but since that KNOX update was already on it when I got the phone used, it will not let me go to any ROM's lower then 4.3

hey man i have the same phone as you, just found an easy way to root it after struggling. Just updated to Stock 4.3 Bell Firmware using odin, completely fresh phone.
How to root it:
1. Flash philz recovery in odin "philz_touch_6.19.3-t0lteatt.tar.md5" (Download mode= Vol Down + Home + Power)
2. Reboot back into android once
3. Power off phone
4. Boot into recovery (Vol Up + Home + Power)
5. Goto philz settings->Reroot rom (or something to that effect)
6. Recovery will tell you done, and to reboot and install SuperSU from Play Store
7. Reboot download and install SuperSU from Play Store
8. Open SuperSU it will immediately ask if you would like to disable Knox.. say yes
9. Done

Does this work?
My wife's Rogers note2 is bone stock running I317MVLUCMK5.
She is paranoid about Knox and possibly killing her phone.
She wants me to get it rooted, but I'm struggling to find a clear cut answer.
Also, it would be better if anyone knows how to (if possible) downgrade to 4.1.2 and start from there... As I know how to do that one like the back of my hand.

Simple. First get the root. Like the su binary and stuff. once you are rooted get suersu. What I mean by first get root is literally get root through a program or something. After this you will have root but you wont have root access. So get supersu now and launch the app. It will ask to update your su binary. Say yes. then the thing will say something about knox then ask you if you want to try to disable knox. Tap yes and knox should be disabled and your su binary should be updated and working.
I'm exactly in the middle of nowhere .. Try to root with CF method. After the first try and reboot. I got the knox alert "unauthorized, bla, bla" the thing is that I can't get the full root or return to stock. Also when I tried to install knox in order to Uninstaller it, I can't. My phone is not allowed to use knox any more... I already tried to download Su and update it in order to disable knox with no success.... Stupid knox and stupid 4.3:crying:
My phone is I317M Rogers, it run stock 4.3. I followed this guide, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2618261 rooted success.

koodiifin's way worked perfectly!
Thank you koodiifin!
I'm sorry i had the wrong links and because of this i had miss information. So i formally apologize by updating with the proper links.
this first method doesn't work with the Sph-L710T or the Sph-L710 on NJ2/NJ3
First method: You can root the stock 4.4.2 ND8/NDC:laugh:
1st. Make sure your on 4.4.2 ND8 or NDC
2nd. Download Towel Root
3rd. Place Towel Root in sdcard or internal storage
4th. With any file manager find and install Towel Root
5th. Open Towel Root and well root
6th. Go to play store and download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu&hl=en and also https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&hl=en let super user update the binary
7th. Flash any recovery you want {personally i went with PhilZ Touch (this was before PhilZ had a root Option)}
8th. Enjoy your rooted stock 4.4.2 ND8/NDC
Down below is one more way too root Stock ND8/NDC/NJ2/NJ3 or NF4/OA3 (L710T) and basically any other update
(link to the almighty ODIN)
Second Method: mostly recommended
1st. Odin flash TWRP
2nd. In Odin choose PDA, PA or AP then select the TWRP Tar you just downloaded
3rd. Make sure Auto reboot is unchecked (also at this time your s3 should be in download mode)
4th. Hit start and let Odin let it finish!!
5th. Hold power button to turn off your S3, after it turns off about 10 seconds later it will turn back on to the battery charging screen so before that quickly hold Volume+ and Home, to boot into recovery
6th. now your in TWRP
7th. so to root your stock rom with TWRP flash the following file SuperSU.zip by Chain fire (pro tip. Install any other custom recovery the same way I did for TWRP above if it is in .tar format)
and here is Philz recovery for the D2Lte 6.48.4 ( which you must flash in TWRP)
and here is TWRP that was made specifically for the D2Rephersher/triband/L710T TWRP (which you must flash in a recovery)
Third method Most recent.

This is in reference to Samsung Galaxy S3 for Boost Mobile SPH-L710.
Just want to let anyone out there that updated their Boost S3 to L710VPUC0J1 know that you can still root and/or ROM your phone.
Use the instructions to (use Odin to) update the recovery to TWRP first (in the second set of instructions). I had trouble trying to go right to PhilZ Recovery (which I believe is based off of ClockWorkMod). I Had to do the TWRP (twrp-2.8.7.0-d2spr.img.tar) first.
It was the only way to get it to actually accept the recovery, not sure why, maybe because the latest Samsung firmware fixed an exploit or two.
This is an older phone, but it is still a viable one.
I hope this helps someone out there.
It took me a while to figure this quandary out.
As always this WILL flag KNOX, but I'm sure this won't be an issue at this date and time (8/2016).

i want to say yes but towel root does come with a warning that it might brick your device.....but i want to say yes since most things that can be done to the ND8 can be done to the NDC and also in reverse order.....so try it and report back it will be good to know if it works on both bootloaders

Straight forward, fast and easy. I did notice the following:
1) Updating binary reported it did not successfully install. I've seen this before on other devices, but everything worked well. Ext SD and Camera all OK. Everything works fine so far - Titanium, Nandroid, Root Browser, etc.
2) At one point, I was directed to install Busy Box. Having done this on other devices, I said "Yes" and installed it.
3) I see that my device now shows Device Status as Custom ( was Normal before, if I remember correctly). Is this due to Busy Box?
4) Is Device Status the only way to know the KNOX Status? I see no yellow triangle as I did on my Galaxy Reverb.
5) I got a Google warning to uninstall Towelroot since it is usafe and a security exploit. I understand that.
I would like to verify the KNOX status and if tripped in the Towelroot process, to let potential users know of that possibility.
Thank You! And thanks to everyone who has continued to work on keeping root free!

Knox only notifies Samsung that your device isn't stock anymore not necessarily rooted like with a custom recovery and then flashed mods and what not but if you Odin the stock rom it resets the counters so Samsung will never know....and that i have noticed TowelRoot doesn't trip that counter.....only the recoveries and when you update the binary (<---completely forgot to fix that) you must hit the option normal not TWRP/CWM

That's great news because same boat here. It worked on 4.3 as well.

Thanks for your response. I may be over thinking these indicators. All I did was Towelroot, successfully. On the phone, the "About Device, Status" now says CUSTOM (was "Official"). The Knox counter according to app "Phone Info" shows Knox Counter at 0x0. As you said, since the counter is not tripped, should be no problem on warranty. So then Device Status CUSTOM is not a problem? I'm not really worried about warranty at this point, but I think I'll hold off further mods for another 6 moths.
Thanks again for your help!

Thanks. I tried the md8 and mk3 "mk3 is what it's on". Both just restart and get stuck on splash screen :/.
I have to go to download mode and and restart it that way to boot system back up.
Do you have any other suggestion. I'm not sure what part of the system is altered. It seems like a stock recovery and it's stock firmware "now rooted". Maybe the kernel.
I can't use USB at all.
I'm guessing maybe I should install twrp. Then install a stock zip or try out a 4.3 rom that way. I would like to get to md8 one way or another. Most md8 Roms want you to odin or flash an md8 base.

Hello,
I've tried to root my Galaxy Note 2 GT N7100 (KitKat 4.4.2) [original, NO custom ROM or CWM]
with
CF-Auto-Root-t03g-gtn7100.tar.md5
via ODIN
as shown in several tutorials.
All seemed passed ok, nothing obviously went wrong, SuperSU appears in the app drawer.
BUT
If started, SU has been be stopped, Root Checker says, the system is very slow and the phone is NOT rooted (properly).
Updating SU via PlayStore is NOT possible, only to deactivate.
Counter is on 1, Triangle away and other system apps don't work, because the phone isn't really rooted
Wipe data also is changing nothing.
So I've now a NON-rooted phone with the counter on 1, updates via OTA were denied, by reasons seen above.
What can I do? Could 'GalaxyNote2Root' be an option?
THX!

Ohh, THX for you fast reply!
Does
openrecovery-twrp-2.7.2.1-t03g.img

Or alternative: cwm6-root-note2, but this is old (2008)
I tried rooting my N7105 LTE last night and think I am having the same problem mate, hopefully someone can help!
Most important question: Why do you want to root your device?
If you want to run custom roms, forget about root cause you only need a custom recovery (best the recommended one for the rom) flashed with Odin.
Then you can flash any rom you want through this recovery and most of them are pre-rooted, so :good:
Only if you want to be rooted with stock rom I will try to guide you.

Only to prevent KNOX to deny access to the external card and run some apps, which need SU-rights, e.g. Titanium- / efs- Backup and so one.
At last to make TC working again. This app makes the phone freezing (superSU cannot start and hangs).
Thanks for yor reply.
One way to do it:
Flash custom recovery through Odin and afterwards latest SuperSu.
After bootup the app will deactivate Knox.
EDIT: I have not tested, cause I make my own rooted base-roms, so I hope it will work for you.
I can provide you such a base
